BASKETBALL DIARIES, NATURAL BORN KILLERS AND SCHOOL SHOOTINGS: SHOULD THERE BE LIMITS ON SPEECH WHICH TRIGGERS COPYCAT VIOLENCE? JULIET DEE* I. INTRODUCTION During the past five years, parents who send their children to school in the morning have had to face the grim possibility, however remote, that their children might be shot and killed by a classmate during the school day. ABC News provides a list of school shootings between 1996 and the present', which is as follows: February 19, 1997: 16 year-old Evan Ramsey opens fire with a shot- gun in a common area at the Bethel, Alaska, high school, killing the principal and a student and wounding two others. He is sentenced to two 99-year terms. October 1, 1997: A 16 year-old boy in Pearl, Mississippi is accused of killing his mother, then going to Pearl High School, killing two students including his ex-girifriend and wounding seven others. -

The Cinema of Oliver Stone
Interviews Stone on Stone Between 2010 and 2014 we interviewed Oliver Stone on a number of occasions, either personally or in correspondence by email. He was always ready to engage with us, quite literally. Stone thrives on the cut- and- thrust of debate about his films, about himself and per- ceptions of him that have adorned media outlets around the world throughout his career – and, of course, about the state of America. What follows are transcripts from some of those interviews, with- out redaction. Stone is always at his most fascinating when a ques- tion leads him down a line of theory or thinking that can expound on almost any topic to do with his films, or with the issues in the world at large. Here, that line of thinking appears on the page as he spoke, and gives credence to the notion of a filmmaker who, whether loved or loathed, admired or admonished, is always ready to fight his corner and battle for what he believes is a worthwhile, even noble, cause. Oliver Stone’s career has been defined by battle and the will to overcome criticism and or adversity. The following reflections demonstrate why he remains the most talked about, and combative, filmmaker of his generation. Interview with Oliver Stone, 19 January 2010 In relation to the Classification and Ratings Administration Interviewer: How do you see the issue of cinematic censorship? Oliver Stone: The ratings thing is very much a limited game. If you talk to Joan Graves, you’ll get the facts. The rules are the rules. -
Jemma Purdey
EPILOGUE Jemma Purdey This past December, I led a group of Australian students on a study tour to Indonesia, including a week of language and cultural immersion at a university in Bandung. The coordinators of the unit took the initiative to include a guest lecture in the program for our students and other for- eign visitors, as well as their own graduate students in Citizenship stud- ies. The topic of the lecture was Indonesian history and the Pancasila. As mine is a breadth subject open to enrolments from across faculties, in general my students had only a tacit knowledge of Indonesian his- tory. The lecturer delivered his rather dry account as a chronology of Indonesian “pre-colonial”, “colonial” and “post-colonial” history with a concluding discussion on Pancasila as national ideology. My students found this latter aspect of his lecture to be the more stimulating (the idea of a “national ideology”, particularly with religion as its starting point, as it seems a provocative one for young Australians). Personally, despite his comprehensive chronological listing of historical events com- plete with detail of lives lost in the colonial wars against the Dutch, what struck me was that there was no mention at all of “1965” beyond the 30 September Movement and Suharto’s triumphant suppression of it. Not of the mass killings and purges of Communists. Not even as a footnote. “1965” represents a period in Indonesian history roughly from 1965 to 1966 when an estimated half a million people were murdered (though some authors in this volume put this fgure higher, see in this volume © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s) 2018 357 K. -

PRESS RELEASE Amsterdam, 27 August, 2020 Gianfranco Rosi Is the Guest of Honor at IDFA 2020 the International Documentary
PRESS RELEASE Amsterdam, 27 August, 2020 Gianfranco Rosi is the Guest of Honor at IDFA 2020 The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) is proud to announce its Guest of Honor for the 2020 edition: Italian director Gianfranco Rosi, the only filmmaker to win top awards at two A-list festivals with documentary films, the Golden Lion at Venice with Sacro GRA in 2013 and the Golden Bear at the Berlinale with Fire at Sea in 2016. Rosi's work will be in the spotlight at IDFA, including his new film Notturno, which premieres in competition at the Venice Film Festival which starts this week. It is the result of the three- year journey that took him to the borders of Syria, Iraq, Kurdistan, and Lebanon. Rosi is one of the few filmmakers who has found the way to balance accessibility and commercial success with a highly demanding artistic language, and as such is a key figure in the “Golden Age of Documentary” that we are living in. Although he made only six films, his approach resulted in masterpieces that provide a unique view of society. His camera shows us how people eXperience their world and allows us to forget ours. Standing on the side lines of events, he observes them and does not go into polemics or eXplanations, but his deeply humane point of view remains clear through his unique documentary method. IDFA's Artistic Director Orwa Nyrabia says: "Rosi handles every shot like a jeweler would treat a unique pearl, with great care, patience, and with utmost respect, like a sacred object. -
