Resolution recognizing 200"‘Anniversary Independence of the Republic of

COUNCIL AS A WHOLE Offered and Moved for Adoption the Following Resolution:

WHEREAS, July 20"‘marks the 200"‘anniversary ofthe independence ofthe Republic ofColombia in 1819; and WHEREAS,this important Bicentemiialdate allows us to recognize Colombian Americans cultural contributions, entrepreneur spirit, civism and institutions and organizations, in our City; and WHEREAS, Colombia’s rich pre~Colombian history, includes indigenous societies, such as the Muiscas, Quimbaya and Tayrona, consideredto have been one ofthe most developed indigenous groups in South America; and WHEREAS, the City of SantaMaria was the first permanent Spanish settlement in South America, founded in 1525. The City of Santa Fe de Bogota was founded in 1538 and in 1717, became the capital of the Viceroyalty of Nueva Granada, one of the three principal administrative centers of in the New World; and WHEREAS, The Viceroyalty of Nueva Granada, included the union of the countries now known as Venezuela, Ecuador and Panama; and

WHEREAS, on July 20, l8lO, the citizens of Bogota created the ?rst representative council to defy Spanish authority, and the country’s Liberator Simon Bolivar led the cause of independence and by the Battle of Boyaca on August 7, i819 had secured pemianent independence and self-determination for the formation of La Gran Colombia (Greater Colombia); and

WHEREAS, the Bicentennial celebrates the lives and legacy of La Gran Colombia’s forefathers: Simon Bolivar, Manuela Beltra'n. Policarpa Salavarrieta and Francisco de Paula Santander; and

WHERAS, the Bicentennial recogriizes the Revolucizi/7do [or Comzmerns in March of 1781, a creole movement against Spaniard taxation led by Juan Francisco Berbeo and Jose Antonio Galan and starting point of the independence of Colombia in the Department of Santander; and

WHEREAS, Colombia is the most ethnically and linguistically diverse country per capita, with its rich cultural heritage re?ecting in?uences by various Amerindian groups, European settlers, forced labor A?ican migrants, and immigration from Europe and the greater MiddleEast; and WHEREAS, Colombia is the most densely biodiverse country per square kilometer and is part of the world's 17 mega diverse countries; with its territory encompassing the Amazon rainforest, grasslands, deserts, plateaus, tundra, moors, glaciers, islands and coastlinesalong both the Caribbean Sea and the Paci?c Ocean; and WHEREAS, two hundredyears ago, a new yellow, blue and red flag waved proudly in the new Republic NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the members ofthe Municipal Council ofthe City of Jersey City hereby congratulate the Republic of Colombia on its 200"‘Anniversary and wish all living and working in Jersey City a happy and festive celebration of their home country’s Bicentennial Independence Day.
