Oh dear! And I waited so long for this car... Retirement meant I had the funds to go and get a newish Saab. The previous 14 had been second-hand in varying degrees, but mostly a few hundred pounds, with high mileages. I drove them almost problem free (mostly things I could fix myself) well into the 150,000s and then sold them on and started again. I began with V4 96s and 95s which were great. I loved the free-wheel device, the shape and the sound. The kids loved the rear- facing seats in the 95s and we all liked the amount of space – they seemed to swallow holiday clobber out of all proportion to the size of the had been clunking on small bumps, and wheezing as well. I bonnet gave me no help in locating the noise, but it was slightly found one split in the black rubber on the 99s rear bumper, and more audible near the cam belt side of the engine. Swedish Day 2010 It was an absolute honour to be asked to pick up Saab racing legend and Saab Owners Club GB President, Mr Erik Carlsson. The organisers Robin and Alex had no idea I was to bring him to the Swedish Day, what a coup! The racing legend known as ‘on the roof’ was transported in my recently acquired 9-3 Saab Tid. I was really looking forward to the journey down to Yeovil which I estimated would take three hours, which would give me ample time to ‘interview’ Erik Carlsson in the confined space of a car. However, unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, Erik was unable to attend, but I still think the piece I have written is worthy of addition to these pages. We’ll lose a wonderful brand, powered 2.0t 9-5 (recently borrowed from Richard Elliott and which, developed in the right direction would still appeal to many, which had already driven the equivalent of half way to the not least its loyal band of followers. And even after 13 years of the moon) felt much more spritely. By the way, I managed to get a new water pump for mine from Two-Stroke and fitted it – what a fiddly job – all those hoses and the two awkward bolts but it’s done so GYM is well again!” Thanks for the information, David, and congratulations on fixing the water pump, they are very fiddly. It’s often easier to remove the entire timing cover to get easier access to the water pump than to try to repair in situ.

New Registrations

Well not quite new, but Fane Murray, who was last in touch two years ago, phoned to say his 90 should soon be back in use after a period of storage. Last time it was off the road for a while it started easily, went straight through the MOT and was back on the road with no problems. This time the clutch master cylinder doesn’t seem to have liked standing around. A mini one, GMC1077, should do the job. Also the headlining has given up, as they do. A cheaper fix than having it recovered can be to pin it back using matching plastic number plate screws which can be carefully threaded into the fibreglass behind. I tried this two years ago and they are still in place on my 90

Carburettor overhaul I mentioned last time I’d been having some problems with the carburettor on my 90. The carbs on most 99s and 90s are made by Stromberg, Solex or Zenith to a similar specification, and luckily parts for these are readily available at the moment. I got my kit from Fuel Systems – www.carburetters.co.uk – apart from the main jets, which are a press Another 90 has been registered by Gary Callon. ‘Emily’ is a 1986 fit, you can tackle most jobs with basic tools. cherry red 90 which Gary has owned since 2004. I the red 90 back in 2002 when I bought the 99 and it became also swapped a float from another spare carb PES 411Y. I then bought the red 90 from him in 2004 and it’s been as a precaution. I also noticed the throttle my daily car from Arbroath to Dundee ever since. As a car ‘Emily’ has done me very well since 2004. Neo Brothers sorted me out with them at a very good price but the Kwik Fits and McConnechy’s Finally I fitted a hose from the overflow couldn’t source them. The exhaust is different though to the 900 outlet, which also acts as a float chamber and 99 so I suppose it is inevitable with only 25,000 or so of the breather, down to the inner wing. This has made a big difference to the timing which proved to be too advanced and running temperature of the car along with the radiator fan switch. set it to 20 degrees before TDC at 2000rpm Before the fan would come on at about 10 o’clock on the gauge but now it’s more like 9 o’clock. The result of all this has been improved fuel oil leak which also seems to have stopped and I’m wondering if economy, better power low down and most importantly no leaks! it’s because the engine is running a little bit colder that the oil is staying a little bit thicker.” Door Handle Not sure about the last point but a 90 or 99 without an oil leak is Opening the car door the other night there was a metallic clang. At first I thought something rare indeed! had fallen out of the car, but couldn’t see anything. Then tried the interior pull handle again and it was loose – clearly something had failed inside the door. On stripping it down the next day I found the end of the alloy handle had partially broken, allowing the roll pin to drop out which connects it to the linkage back to the catch mechanism. Sometimes it’s handy having a spare 90, not only for parts but to see where the bits I fished out of the bottom of the door should have gone. In fact it turned out that my spare handle was also partially broken but still holding together, so with some judicious reinforcing with Araldite I was still able to use it. Clearly these alloy handles are a weakness on later 99s and 90s. Outrageous Saab designing – a part which only lasts a quarter of a century! Stuart

A few months ago I heard of a two-door 99T that had been in hibernation for over 20 years, that had all of an unbelievable 5,263 miles on the clock (yes that number is correct). The original owner had passed away and his widow had parked the car in a thankfully dry garage, where it had stood until now. She contacted a local Saab specialist with a view to having the car re-commissioned. As you can see the cooling system was in need of a thorough clean, and the waste-gate and cylinder head had to be stripped. The car is now back on the road with a fresh MOT, (I wonder if this is its first!). For those of us with dodgy interiors then just check out these pictures, I had forgotten just how fabulous the seats are when new. Sharon and I attended Swedish Day at the Haynes Motor Museum and it was great to see four 99 Turbo owners bringing their cars along (sadly ours was not included in this number). We travelled down in convoy with Julian and his Clarion 99T, that car looks ‘the business’ and attracted a lot of attention.
