[Re]viewing the Chinese Landscape: Imaging the Body [In]visible in Shanshuihua 山水畫 Lim Chye Hong 林彩鳳 A thesis submitted to the University of New South Wales in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Chinese Studies School of Languages and Linguistics Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences The University of New South Wales Australia abstract This thesis, titled '[Re]viewing the Chinese Landscape: Imaging the Body [In]visible in Shanshuihua 山水畫,' examines shanshuihua as a 'theoretical object' through the intervention of the present. In doing so, the study uses the body as an emblem for going beyond the surface appearance of a shanshuihua. This new strategy for interpreting shanshuihua proposes a 'Chinese' way of situating bodily consciousness. Thus, this study is not about shanshuihua in a general sense. Instead, it focuses on the emergence and codification of shanshuihua in the tenth and eleventh centuries with particular emphasis on the cultural construction of landscape via the agency of the body. On one level the thesis is a comprehensive study of the ideas of the body in shanshuihua, and on another it is a review of shanshuihua through situating bodily consciousness. The approach is not an abstract search for meaning but, rather, is empirically anchored within a heuristic and phenomenological framework. This framework utilises primary and secondary sources on art history and theory, sinology, medical and intellectual history, ii Chinese philosophy, phenomenology, human geography, cultural studies, and selected landscape texts. This study argues that shanshuihua needs to be understood and read not just as an image but also as a creative transformative process that is inevitably bound up with the body. -

Lecture Notes, by James Cahill Note: The image numbers in these lecture notes do not exactly coincide with the images onscreen but are meant to be reference points in the lectures’ progression. Lecture 4B. Tang Landscape Painting What follows is part two of lecture 4, in which we will look at some of the scant evidence that survives for what must have been a great development, now mostly lost, of landscape painting in the Tang period. We’re still dealing with a few fragments and some paintings we can take to be copies of Tang works, of uncertain reliability. But even these give us some sense of the very important developments of this period, as we read of them in the writings of the time and later. Landscape was becoming established as a separate genre of painting, still secondary to figure and religious painting but now absorbing the efforts of major masters, and being the principal concern of a few of them. Something approaching “pure” landscape must already have existed in the pre-Tang period, if we believe the writings of Zong Bing and others. But now we can observe the early stages of its development in the Tang. Image 4.14.0: wall painting (copy) in the tomb of Prince Yide 懿德, early Tang ( 3000 , 39, where the landscape is unclear). The artist is actually known: the name Chang Bian is inscribed on it; he is recorded as a follower of Li Sixun 李思訓. This identification was made, as I recall, in a catalog by Jan Fontein of an exhibition he organized of copies of Tang wall paintings while he was curator at Boston MFA. -

Wu Zhen's poetic inscriptions on paintings1 - School of Oriental and African Studies Introduction Wu Zhen (1280–1354), style name Zhonggui, also called himself Meihua Daoren (Plum Blossom Daoist Priest), Mei Shami (Plum Priest) and Meihua Heshang (Plum Blossom Priest). He came from Weitang, now known as Chengguan, in Zhejiang Province. Along with Huang Gongwang (1269–1354), Ni Zan (1301–74), and Wang Meng (1308–85), he is known as one of the ‘Four Great Painters of the Yuan Dynasty’.2 Wu Zhen was also one of the leading figures of Chinese literati painting at the height of its popularity. When painting landscapes, or bamboo and rocks, he would usually inscribe his works with poems, and his contemporaries praised his perfection in poetry, calligraphy and painting, or the phenomenon of sanjue, ‘the three perfections’.3 Research to date has concentrated on Wu Zhen's paintings,4 but his poetic inscriptions have been relatively neglected. This article seeks to redress the balance by focusing on Wu Zhen's poetic inscriptions on paintings, both his own and those of past masters, and argues that inscriptions and colophons are an essential key to understanding literati art. Wu Zhen's family background is difficult to ascertain, since only very limited accounts of his life can be found in Yuan period sources.5 Sun Zuo (active mid to late fourteenth century)mentions Wu Zhen's residential neigh- bourhood, painting skills and character, without going into any depth.6 After the mid-Ming period, legends about Wu Zhen developed, and these provide us with some useful material. -

5 The Suspension of Dynastic Time JONATHAN HAY In the conventional historical record, China's history appears as a succession of dynasties, a succession that is often complicated by the division of the country into areas under the rule of different regimes. But like the official maps of the London underground and the New York subway, which stretch, shorten, straighten and bend to create an illusion of carefully planned order, the chronological tables of Chinese history represent a ferocious editing of the historical process. The boundaries between dynasties were far from unambiguous to those who lived them. In this essay, I shall try to reconstruct some of the ambiguities of one such boundary, that between the Ming and the Qing dynasties, from the point of view of painting. The focus will be on what I shall call 'remnant' art, that is; the art of those intellectuals who defined themselves as the 'remnant subjects' (yimin), of the Ming dynasty! Still more narrowly, I shall largely be concerned with two closely related painters working in the city of Nanjing, formerly China's southern capital under the Ming dynasty. Zhang Feng (died 1662) and Gong Xian (1619-89) are just two of many remnant artists who congregated in the suburbs of Nanjing, where the temples offered safe haven to Ming sympathizers and the Ming monuments were visible reminders of the previous dynasty.' The works I shall discuss are landscapes which exploit the heritage of landscape painting as the pre-eminent genre for the metaphoric exploration of the individual's relation to state and nation. -
