As Raymond Williams wrote some time ago, "the idea of nature contains, though often unnoticed, an extraordinary amount of human history."'At the same time as the idea marks a series of radically different, and historically changing, usages, relations and meanings, it has also come to represent some basic quality, some underlying continuity that differentiates the epiphenomenal from the essential in humanity's vision of itself and the world. Thus, the movement between the "nature" of something and the something called "nature" shows a social order in the throes of self-definition: the tension between the production of an "essence," a sense of a historical trajectory, and the synchronic proliferation of plural meanings, in the working-out of "nature." Joyce Nelson and Andrew Wilson both capture this tension well; each shows the constitution of nature through the multiple, conflicting, and often destructive dis- courses of modernity and postrnodemity. Indeed, they both go a long way toward showing just how much human history is contained in the idea of "nature." In an era marked by "ecological crisis," such investigations would seem crucial indeed. But these books are not panic texts, not works of social inquiry parroting the voices of "hard" science on environmental apocalypse. They are, instead, works which show the tensions and contradictionsof North Americans's relations to "nature," something that all too many contemporary writings of an environmentalistvein overlook in their singular condemnation of the more destructive elements of western social life. -

Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Combining with Wu Guanzhong's learning experience, this paper analyzes Chinese oil painting art characteristics in different periods, and the method of integrating traditional Chinese ink and wash painting language with the western modern design language in the aspects such as modelling, colour and composition. Wu Guanzhong successfully used western painting method to show the Oriental artistic conception, and formed unique composition views and forms. With the use of concise and simple colors and free-writing lines, the painter's personal emotions, thoughts and standpoint and deep understanding of life can be expressed. On the basis of in-depth research on the essence, connotation and thought of Chinese and Western art, Wu Guanzhong found the "junction" of the integration of Chinese and Western art. Shane McCausland Intermediary Moments: Framing and Scrolling Devices across Painting, Print and Film in China’s Visual Narratives As an historian of the arts of dynastic China, it is refreshing to be addressing schol- ars of the ‘old world’ of prehistory and classical archaeology and up to contempo- rary times, and to be in the final panel not because this paper deals with one of the West’s Others but because it investigates visual storytelling in artistic formats across the latter half of the historical period that began in China around 1500 BCE. This essay is concerned with how social meaning and identity are shaped through the materiality of pictorial artworks and also with some disciplinary questions about topics like mediality. Mindful of present concerns, I explore the mechanisms by which visual narratives were framed and developed in light of the changing media in use in this cultural context, as well as the intelligibility and coherence of these visual narrative devices. This conference called forth the type of thematic research, ranging widely across received divisions of time and culture and engaged in by an intergenerational cross-section of professionals, that the collective field of art history and archaeology actually needs and I commend the organizers for that.1 Still, concerning the wider framework for investigation here, there is a conundrum. Researchers are by nature wary of narratives and claims to legitimacy founded on the historical cultures em- bedded in the modern nation-states. At the same time, they must take seriously these cultural formations especially where the agency of the past in the present may be quite different from that of our European condition.
