The list, comprising 624 species in the families Lasiocampidae, Endromidae, Saturniidae, Sphingidae, Notodontidae, Noctuidae, Pantheidae, Lymantriidae, Nolidae and Arctiidae from the Southern Ural Mountains is presented. The material was collected during 1996–2001 in 10 different expeditions. Dichagyris lux Fibiger & K. INTRODUCTION The fauna of noctuoid moths (the families Erebidae and Noctuidae) of Kazakhstan is still poorly studied. Only the fauna of West Kazakhstan has been studied satisfactorily (Gorbunov 2011). On the faunas of other parts of the country, only fragmentary data are published (Lederer, 1853; 1855; Aibasov & Zhdanko 1982; Hacker & Peks 1990; Lehmann et al. 1998; Benedek & Bálint 2009; 2013; Korb 2013). In contrast to the West Kazakhstan, the fauna of noctuid moths of East Kazakhstan was studied inadequately. -

Abstract Additions, deletions and corrections are made to the Irish checklist of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). Elachista biatomella (Stainton, 1848) is added to the Irish list. The total number of confirmed Irish species of Lepidoptera now stands at 1480. Key words: Lepidoptera, additions, deletions, corrections, Irish list, Elachista biatomella Introduction Bond, Nash and O’Connor (2006) provided a checklist of the Irish Lepidoptera. Since its publication, many new discoveries have been made and are reported here. In addition, several deletions have been made. A concise and updated checklist is provided. The following abbreviations are used in the text: BM(NH) – The Natural History Museum, London; NMINH – National Museum of Ireland, Natural History, Dublin. The total number of confirmed Irish species now stands at 1480, an addition of 68 since Bond et al. (2006). Taxonomic arrangement As a result of recent systematic research, it has been necessary to replace the arrangement familiar to British and Irish Lepidopterists by the Fauna Europaea [FE] system used by Karsholt 60 Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society No. 36 (2012) and Razowski, which is widely used in continental Europe. -

Otto Moog 1, Erhard Christian 2*, and Rudolf Eis3 1Institute of Hydrobiology and Aquatic Ecosystem Management, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Gregor Mendel 33 Str., 1180 Vienna, Austria 2 Institute of Zoology, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Gregor Mendel 33 Str., 1180 Vienna, Austria 3Waldegg 9a, 2754 Waldegg, Austria Abstract: Between 2015 and 2019, the list of Lepidoptera from “cave” habitats (i.e., proper caves, rock shelters and artificial subterranean structures) in Austria grew from 17 to 62 species, although the effort of data collection remained nearly constant from the late 1970s onwards. The newly recorded moths and butterflies were resting in caves during daytime in the the warm season, three species were also overwintering there. We observed Catocala elocata at 28 cave inspections, followed by Mormo maura (18), Catocala nupta (7), Peribatodes rhomboidaria, and Euplagia quadripunctaria (6). More than half of the species have been repeatedly observed in caves in Austria or abroad, so their relationship with such sites is apparently not completely random. Since the increase of records in Austria coincided with a considerable rise in the annual number of hot days (maximum temperatures ≥30°C) from 2015 onwards, we interpret the growing inclination of certain Lepidoptera towards daytime sheltering in caves as a behavioral reaction to climate warming. As another recording season draws to a close for many species groups, it is in- teresting to look back at the summer’s finds throughout south east Wales. Whether it is a Welsh first (Geranium Bronze in Creigiau, pg 8), a phenomenon rarely seen in our temperate climate (Bioluminescent plankton in Wales, pg 9) or just taking the time to study something often overlooked (Slime Moulds, pg 18), the joys of discovery through wildlife recording is evident throughout this issue. It is also great to learn of the efforts being made to preserve and enhance biodi- versity by organisations such as Porthkerry Wildlife Group (Porthkerry Country Park Wildflower Meadow Creation, pg 4) and Buglife (Wales Threatened Bee Re- port, pg 22). Many thanks to all who contributed to the newsletter. I hope this newsletter will be an inspiration to all our recorders as the nights draw in and your backlog of summer recording beckons! Project Update: November 2019 Thanks to the support of Rufford Foundation, our working group got the opportunity to expand our research on the following subject: “Assessment of the population status of the moth mixed red underwing Catocala deducta and the development of measures to preserve its habitats in the floodplain of the Irtysh River. " We agreed with the Pavlodar regional territorial inspectorate of forestry and wildlife of the Republic of Kazakhstan, to receive official permission No. 2-13- / 313 of April 23, 2019 to conduct entomological research on the composition of the fauna of Lepidoptera insects (Lepidoptera, Heterocera) in the floodplain forest of the Irtysh River. To develop our research in the project, we registered an NGO public organisation “Entomolife” which activities are aimed at preserving the biological diversity of insects in Kazakhstan. Since July 2019, we have been conducting the research with the aim of collecting data referring the topic of the project in the poplar/willow forests of the Irtysh River Valley on the territory of the Irtysh River Floodplain State Nature Reserve in the Pavlodar region of Kazakhstan. The first stage of our research was the reconnaissance expedition from 7th September to 7th October 2019 to search for probable habitats of the species and to select future research control sites. The research route covered forests on the right bank of the Irtysh River in the “middle reaches” and in the north of the region in the “lower reaches” of the river with thick undergrowth sections consisting various shrubs and the presence of old trees Populus nigra, Populus alba and Salix sp. -
