The Contribution of Somali Diaspora in Denmark to Peacebuilding in Somalia Through Multi-Track Diplomacy
Journal of Ethnic and Cultural Studies Copyright 2021 2021, Vol. 8, No. 2, 241-260 ISSN: 2149-1291 http://dx.doi.org/10.29333/ejecs/642 The Contribution of Somali Diaspora in Denmark to Peacebuilding in Somalia through Multi-Track Diplomacy Sylvester Tabe Arrey The University of Buea, Cameroon Francisco Javier Ullán de la Rosa1 University of Alicante, Spain Abstract: The paper assesses the ways the Somali diaspora in Denmark is contributing to peacebuilding in their home country through what is known in peace studies as Multi-Track Diplomacy. It starts by defining the concepts of peacebuilding and Multi-track Diplomacy, showing how the latter works as an instrument for the former. The paper then describes and analyzes how, through a varied array of activities that include all tracks of diplomacy as classified by the Diamond&McDonald model, members of Danish diaspora function as interface agents between their home and host societies helping to build the conditions for a stable peace. The article also analyzes how the diplomacy tracks carried out by the Somali-Danish diaspora, as well as the extent of their reach, are shaped by the particular characteristics of this group vis-à-vis other Somali diasporic communities: namely, its small size and relatively high levels of integration and acculturation into the Danish host society. Keywords: Danish-Somalis, multi-track diplomacy, peacebuilding, Somalia, Somali diaspora. The Concepts of Peacebuilding and Multi-track Diplomacy Introduced for the first time by Galtung (1975), peacebuilding progressively became a mainstream concept in the field of peace studies (Heap, 1983; Young, 1987). The document an Agenda for Peace by UN Secretary-General Boutros-Ghali (Boutros-Ghali, 1992) can be considered its official come-of-age. -

The history of the Viking Congresses goes back to 1946. Since this early beginning, the objective has been to create a common forum for the most current research and theories within Viking-age studies and to enhance communication and collaboration within the field, crossing disciplinary and geographical borders. Thus, it has become a multinational, interdisciplinary meeting for leading scholars of Viking studies in the fields of Archaeology, History, Philology, Place-name studies, Numismatics, Runology and other disciplines, including the natural sciences, relevant to the study of the Viking Age. The 18th Viking Congress opens with a two-day session at the National Museum in Copenhagen and continues, after a cross-country excursion to Roskilde, Trelleborg and Jelling, in the town of Ribe in Jylland. A half-day excursion will take the delegates to Hedeby and the Danevirke. The themes of the 18th Viking Congress are: 1. Catalysts and change in the Viking Age As a historical period, the Viking Age is marked out as a watershed for profound cultural and social changes in northern societies: from the spread of Christianity to urbanisation and political centralisation. Exploring the causes for these changes is a core theme of Viking Studies. -

Economy, Magic and the Politics of Religious Change in Pre-Modern
1 Economy, magic and the politics of religious change in pre-modern Scandinavia Hugh Atkinson Department of Scandinavian Studies University College London Thesis submitted for the degree of PhD 28th May 2020 I, Hugh Atkinson, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that these sources have been acknowledged in the thesis. 2 Abstract This dissertation undertook to investigate the social and religious dynamic at play in processes of religious conversion within two cultures, the Sámi and the Scandinavian (Norse). More specifically, it examined some particular forces bearing upon this process, forces originating from within the cultures in question, working, it is argued, to dispute, disrupt and thereby counteract the pressures placed upon these indigenous communities by the missionary campaigns each was subjected to. The two spheres of dispute or ambivalence towards the abandonment of indigenous religion and the adoption of the religion of the colonial institution (the Church) which were examined were: economic activity perceived as unsustainable without the 'safety net' of having recourse to appeal to supernatural powers to intervene when the economic affairs of the community suffered crisis; and the inheritance of ancestral tradition. Within the indigenous religious tradition of the Sámi communities selected as comparanda for the purposes of the study, ancestral tradition was embodied, articulated and transmitted by particular supernatural entities, personal guardian spirits. Intervention in economic affairs fell within the remit of these spirits, along with others, which may be characterized as guardian spirits of localities, and guardian spirits of particular groups of game animals (such as wild reindeer, fish). -

Elite Migration, Transnational Families, and the Nation State: International Marriages Between Finns and Americans Across the Atlantic in the Twentieth Century
Elite Migration, Transnational Families, and the Nation State: International Marriages between Finns and Americans across the Atlantic in the Twentieth Century A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Johanna Katariina Leinonen IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Advised by Donna Gabaccia and Erika Lee January 2011 © Johanna Leinonen, 2011 Acknowledgements I have been fortunate to have a wonderful support network of friends, family, and advisers during the years I have spent in Minnesota – a network that spans across the Atlantic, just like my research topic. First, I would like extend my gratitude to those Finns and Americans on both sides of the Atlantic who participated in my research. They generously donated their time and shared their stories of migration, marriage, and family life with me, and for that I am deeply grateful. I am profoundly indebted to my advisers, Donna Gabaccia and Erika Lee. I do not think it is possible to overstate the influence Donna has had not only on my research but also on my professional development more broadly. When I started my studies at the University of Minnesota in 2005, I was unsure of my professional identity: as my dissertation research is transnational, comparative, and interdisciplinary in nature, it did not comfortably fit in any traditional disciplinary silo or geographically limited area of specialization. Donna has truly been a role model for me in her passion for spearheading interdisciplinary research and teaching on international migration at the University of Minnesota. Her door has always been open to me with any questions or concerns I may have. -

Participation, Integration, and Recognition and Integration, Participation
Heikkilä, Kostiainen, Leinonen & Söderling Elli Heikkilä, Auvo Kostiainen, Johanna Leinonen Elli Heikkilä, Auvo Participation, Integration, and Ismo Söderling (eds.) Kostiainen, Johanna Leinonen and Ismo and Recognition: Participation, Integration, and Recognition: Söderling (eds.) Changing Pathways to Changing Pathways to Immigrant Incorporation Immigrant Incorporation (eds.) These conference proceedings gather expert articles about different ways of understanding immigrant incorporation, both historically and in contemporary Participation, Integration, and Recognition society. It is important to examine critically what is meant by the term “integration”. Who are targeted with integration policies and who are left out? In which domains of society (e.g. education, labor market and families) is integration expected to take place and at what speed? What is the desired outcome of integration, both for immigrants and for members of the receiving society? How is this outcome measured and best achieved? The articles included in this publication show that there is no single pathway to successful immigrant integration. Immigrants – just like anyone else – have multiple roles in their lives (for example, as family members, workers, students, and political and cultural actors), engage in activities in different social fields, and form relationships along these dimensions. In each of these dimensions, different factors can create obstacles or opportunities for immigrants’ integration process. As scholars examine these multiple pathways to immigrant integration, it is important to keep in mind the power relationships embedded in the integration process. Ideally, integration is a two-way process which results in changes in both immigrant communities and the receiving society. The publication shows how crucial it is to examine integration as a process, and study it both at the group and individual level. -

Sufis in Western Society: Global Networking and Locality (Routledge Sufi Series)
Routledge Sufi series General Editor: Ian Richard Netton Professor of Islamic Studies, University of Exeter The Routledge Sufi series provides short introductions to a variety of facets of the subject, which are accessible both to the general reader and the student and scholar in the field. Each book will be either a synthesis of existing knowledge or a distinct contribution to, and extension of, knowledge of the particular topic. The two major underlying principles of the series are sound scholarship and readability. Previously published by Curzon Al- Hallaj Herbert I.W. Mason Beyond Faith and Infidelity The Sufi poetry and teaching of Mahmud Shabistari Leonard Lewisham Ruzbihan Baqli Mysticism and the rhetoric of Sainthood in Persian Sufism Carl W. Ernst Abdullah Ansari of Herat An early Sufi master A.G. Ravan Farhadi The Concept of Sainthood in Early Islamic Mysticism Bernd Radtke and John O’Kane Suhrawardi and the School of Illumination Mehdi Amin Razavi Persian Sufi Poetry An introduction to the mystical use of classical poems J.T.P. de Bruijn Sufis in Western Society In recent years Sufism has undergone something of a revival as a spiritual altern- ative to other manifestations of Islam. This book investigates the development of Sufism in Western societies, with a regional focus on North America and Europe. Exploring a number of issues relating to the dynamic tensions between religious globalization processes and specific sacred localities, this book looks at the formation of Sufi movements that have migrated from their place of origin to become global religious networks. Sufi groups are highly differentiated and often inaccessible, so the origins and development of Sufism in the West have not been widely studied.
