6 udressmag.com 7 SENIOR TOGETHER WE RISE THE FALL FASHION EVENT RECAP SENDOFF

On November 11th, 2017, the UDress fall issue, Rise, came to life at the Fall Fashion Event. The issue aimed to inspire readers, especially during the start of a new semester. “I think having a theme around strength and overcoming obstacles was really empowering,” said Kayla Mendes, the president of UDress Magazine. “Having the spirit of strength, especially with everything going on in the world right now, it was something that we really wanted to come through.” The theme shined during the event with urban city décor, filled with geometric pieces and a subtle skyline featured in the front of the room. The night’s celebration also included DJ Dee Square, as well as performances by Delaware Dance Fever, the acapella group Vocal Point, and soloists Jennifer Fritz and Mariano DiGabriele.

The highlight of the night was the that followed the performances. Models strutted in clothing from South Moon Under, Burlington, Ski Bum, Viva Love Boutique, Plato’s Closet, Nicole J, Bloom Planners and Macy’s. “All of the models were so diverse and unique,” said executive editor, Haley Reid. “I felt like this really represented so many people on UD’s campus.” Editor-in- chief, Meghan Scarry, would most likely agree with that statement, as the runway show is always her favorite part of UDress launches. “The stylists and hair/makeup team do an amazing job working with the models,” she said. Guests enjoyed the runway show while munching on local cuisines including UD Catering, Bings Bakery, Insomnia Cookies, Jimmy John’s, Klondike Kate’s, Good Uncle and Baked WC. 8 udressmag.com 9 WHAT DELAWARES ROSALIE BASEMAN Growing up in Jenkintown, PA, Rosalie Baseman’s life fit into uniforms. She molded to the private school girl uniform during the day, and after classes, transformed into a ballerina for classical ballet training at the Metropolitan Ballet Academy. It was not until college and her opportunities to travel abroad that allowed her to explore her own personal style. Baseman, a junior communication and French double major with a fashion minor, first fell in love with fashion with the help of her mom’s best friend, who doubles as her fairy godmother. Fast forward to today, and Baseman said her style is influenced by icons such as Audrey Hepburn, Leandra Medine (from ManRepeller), Donatella Versace and Nicole Richie. Her inspiration sparks from history or characters, “I love how the ladies of the ‘20s and ‘40s always look so put together. And it’s simple. You don’t need the latest brands, just having an air of confidence and feeling good in what you are wearing can go so far.” Despite not conforming to brand names, Basemen will never forget her first big purchase while studying abroad in London. She was on the hunt for a silk scarf at the time, and when her mom suggested they take a peak in Chanel, they found the perfect cotton, multicolored scarf decorated in signature C’s to add to her wardrobe. Baseman also never leaves the house without her jewelry; including her rings that each tell a unique story on her fingers, and her handmade necklaces that she even wears when teaching yoga classes. Rosalie always looks put together and joked while quoting Coco Chanel, “Dress like you are going to meet your worst enemy today.”

RYAN KISSANE Ryan Kissane’s fashion sense was not something that came naturally to him. During his middle school years growing up in Plainview, NY, he would spend hours running in and out of his sister’s room to gain her outfit approval the night before a school day. Today, however, the senior marketing major has grown into his own sense of style while beaming with confidence on campus. His go-to outfit consists of an oversized white T-shirt, his favorite cargo H&M sweatpants and old school black Vans with the classic white striped sides. His favorite places to shop include ASOS, Pacsun and H&M to compliment his west coast vibe. Kissane describes his style as eclectic because it is constantly changing to match his mood for the day. Regarding his own style, he said, “Some days I wake up and feel like being preppy and fitting in with the majority of UD with my Timbs and Vineyard Vines khakis, and some days I feel like being swagged out in baggy ripped jeans, some Vans and an oversized sweatshirt like a boss. I’m a happy misfit.” This past summer and winter, Kissane had the opportunity to intern for Tommy Hilfiger and assisted their style-outs for the Tommy x Gigi fashion show that was held in London and Milan. Aside from fashion inspiration sparked by Tommy Hilfiger, Kissane emulates trends by Kanye West or Justin Bieber, such as the effortless layering look. Similar to many celebrities today, Kissane uses fashion as a way to express himself amongst our world that often thrives off of conformity. He said, “I remember as a kid you would typically see men wearing suits and women wearing dresses, and everything looked so cookie cutter. A lot of our society loves to place people in boxes, where they think they should be based on gender or race. I’m always trying to break societal norms.” BEST UDRESSED by: Lenny Prosser

12 udressmag.com 13 COVERING THE BASICS

by: Kayla Solomon

You might think that your resume has all the important information you need to land your dream job, but there is another item that can give an employer more of an insight into who you are. A cover letter allows you to tailor all the information in your resume to catch the eye of the company you are aspiring to work for. You can use it as a secret weapon to stand out amongst the many faceless applications these companies will receive.

According to the resources provided by UD’s Career Services Center, there are several components that are important to include in a cover letter. To begin, the first paragraph of your letter needs to let the company know the reason you are interested in applying. Like any paper, a strong attention grabber is essential to keep the reader hooked while flipping through many applications. After catching their attention, the next paragraph is where your experience and applicable skills will shine through. Use your specific experiences to make parallels with how you will be suitable for the position. The final paragraph of your cover letter includes the overall summary of your interest and qualifications. Most importantly, do not forget your manners and be sure to thank the reader for their time and consideration. Keep the font and layout the same as your resume, and research the company to completely cover everything they are looking for. This letter showcases your writing abilities as well, so keep it short and sweet, be positive and confident, and be sure to have someone else proofread it before you submit it. These recruiters read hundreds of cover letters, so don’t let yours be thrown out due to any spelling and grammar mistakes.

Don’t forget that Career Services is a great resource to help you advance in your professional career. Their website has resume and cover letter examples that can be used as a guide for people crafting ones for the first time. They are here to help students in any way they can, so be sure to reach out to make a great first impression while applying for jobs! From networking and informational interview help to job offer negotiation, Career Services can give you advice on anything you need for professional development!

The job and internship world is tough and competitive, so giving yourself the edge that recruiters will notice can make or break your application. Putting a lot of effort into a cover letter can show how much potential and passion you have for the job you want. As college students, we have so Stylist: Kaylee Ouimet many resources at our disposal that can help us reach our full potential. THE LOGO LOOK

Back in the early 2000s, shirts with Rocawear, Ecko or Aeropostale plastered across the chest flooded American teen closets. Reflecting back on more confusing times in elementary and high school, one would think that the logo shirt trend was buried and left in a heap. But logo shirts from Tommy Hilfiger to Vineyard Vines maintain influence, compared to tees, in a style culture that prides itself on authenticity and representation through minimalist expression.

KEEP IT MINIMAL A minimal approach involving color palettes is recommended as logo shirts offer a look of undeniable essence and character. Incorporate soft yellows, purples, pinks, blues and whites into joggers, bomber jackets, sneakers and beanies. These token pieces take little effort to coordinate but appear effortless and revolutionary.

STUDY THE MOVEMENTS We yearn to harness style that echoes cultural experiences shared with communities and movements of people into our everyday self. People are obsessed with the heydays of skate and street culture and revitalize these trends constantly. Supreme’s loyal consumers are educated on the NYC movement and they continue to contribute to it. Layer logo shirts under a plaid button down or a full-zip hoodie and a denim jacket. Try a Supreme crewneck over a light hoodie or shirt tucked into striped trousers held by a brown belt and measure how adaptable and innovative logos can be.

PLAY WITH VERSATILITY A key to best incorporating logo shirts into wardrobes is pure experimentation. Tuck them into light khaki overalls which can be cuffed at the bottom to show high socks and Vans. Logo shirts are playful and can be worn casually under a blazer or mixed with athletic fabrics like joggers. Your closet could evolve with logo shirts to channel style aesthetics that are impressionable all year round.

Although logo shirts can reflect a cultural experience shared and celebrated by others, there are ways to keep the trend unique and personal to you. They parallel what we stand for and how we choose to live our lives. Logo shirts are outward expressions of the creativity and beauty breathing inward that must be channeled and contributed to social movements dear to us.

by: Katie Burke

You’ve seen it on the red carpet, it’s been all over the news for weeks, your favorite female (and male) actresses and artists can’t stop talking about it: Time’s Up.

For anyone who hasn’t noticed the “coincidental” trend of black dresses at award shows and a majority of female celebrities being extremely active on Twitter in the last month or two, here’s your explanation. Following the sexual assault allegations about Harvey Weinstein back in October, women everywhere were finally feeling brave enough to speak out about being victims of sexual misconduct as well. Time’s Up was initiated in response to the ‘Weinstein effect’ and the #MeToo movement by a group of Hollywood actresses on January 1st, 2018. Administered by the National Women’s Law Center, it is designed to support women facing harassment or assault in the workplace. Actresses like Reese Witherspoon, Emma Watson, and Natalie Portman were faces that helped jumpstart this cause by wearing black to protest gender inequality at the Golden Globes in January 2018 and encouraging fellow attendees, as well as people watching from home, to do so also.

“Dear Sisters” is how the original letter began, addressing that these famous women in the public eye started to use their platform to help those less fortunate, those women who experience sexual harassment in the workplace and don’t have the courage or the resources to do something about it. The letter directly acknowledges the women that may have been harassed and stayed quiet about it, and ends it by saying, “As a first step towards helping women and men across the country seek justice, the signatories of this letter will be seeding a legal fund to help survivors of sexual assault and harassment across industries challenge those responsible.” The phenomenal women working on this project have not only inspired people around the globe but have already raised over twenty million dollars.

Though an initiative like this may seem distant for students at any university it’s not as disconnected as some may think. Lindsey McAleer, a junior Sexual Offense Support (SOS) Advocate explains how Time’s Up is still relevant to college students and its presence here at UD. McAleer elaborated on how, “the Time’s Up movement really has made it clear that no one in any position has the power to abuse someone in any form, in any setting, and that is something that could be further instilled into UD’s culture. I think student groups could further promote the ideals behind the Times Up campaign in the great activist work that’s already going on, on campus.”

Time’s Up has started the dialogue about sexual harassment and how taboo it is in our culture. McAleer personally feels that “the Time’s Up movement pertains to college students in the way that it has really furthered the conversation of sexual abuse, especially sexual harassment and coercion which I think is more swept under the rug compared to sexual assault. Time’s Up does a great job along with the #MeToo movement when it comes to starting to hold those accountable that have been abusers.”

How does Time’s Up pertain to life at Delaware and SOS? Lindsey reported that SOS has had significantly more contacts over 2016-2017, though they can’t pinpoint the exact reason for the increase, it definitely has to do with the changing social climate. “These movements are definitely important and create an awareness that could end up being revolutionary in the work place.” McAleer claimed, “Hopefully the Stylist: Jess Chau Photographer: Kelly Mui Time’s Up movement will continue to seep into all areas of our society experiencing abuse, especially Beauty: Deanna Galati college campuses.” Model: Lindsey McAleer

In a world revolving around an ever-refreshing social media stream, it has become easier than ever to repost without crediting the creator. This is an ongoing struggle currently shaking the ground of the fashion industry. “The Photographers,” a group of notable street style photographers, have declared that they won’t stand to have their copyrighted photos being no free photos posted for promotional reasons without licensing. This unofficial group began their call to action following Milan Fashion Week, this past fall season, when the problem began to get out of hand. To draw attention to their efforts on social media they began hash-tagging misused photos with #nofreephotos.

This is an intricate debate because the fashion industry is a pricey world to work in, much too pricey to not be getting reimbursed for one’s efforts. Photographers, especially in the street style world, have begun to feel that they are being cut short because influencers and brands have been using their photographs without credit or payment for personal gain. An influencer is somewhat of a celebrity personality that is paid to attend fashion shows and promote specific brands on their social media platform. According to The Fashion Law Online, “It was the photographers who made these people (influencers) and continue to sustain their visibility on media channels.” Influencers fight back however, with the sentiment that they are being photographed without consent and those photos are being used by photographers to promote themselves.

Getting into the logistics, according to most states’ publicity laws, it is illegal to use another person’s pictures for advertising purposes without that person’s consent. Technically speaking, this would put the photographers in the wrong, not only in relation to influencers but also for candid photos with unsuspecting subjects in them. The photographers have fought back with the Stylist: Jess Chau Photographer: Kelly Mui sentiment that the “newsworthiness” clause in the First Beauty: Olivia Megale Amendment gives them the right to post these photos. Social media, for most college students, is an indispensable part of our daily lives. One uses it to update your status and keep in touch with friends who you wouldn’t get to interact with otherwise. With the push of a button or the swipe of a finger, you can peer into other people’s lives. It’s another way to navigate the world, just within a virtual context, and so much can be gained from posting and sharing.

Like with every good innovation, there are downsides to having constant access to the world around us. People neglect their surroundings and others around them just to get that kind of attention. When only focused on the context of likes and retweets, it’s difficult to value what’s right in front of you. People only post the positives of their lives, so it’s easy to convince yourself they’re doing better than you and you can end up comparing yourself to others. Social media is a double-edged sword with as many disadvantages as benefits.

Make sure to moderate your time on social media apps like Twitter and Instagram. It’s fun for five minutes but when you’ve been on your phone for hours on end, you know it’s time to take a break. Also, don’t be too concerned with checking every post and update; your friends are your friends, regardless of how often you like their posts or vice versa. Rather than stalking your friends’ whereabouts on Snapchat, be a part of these daily moments with your friends by actually hanging out in person. "Less is more, less is more." We hear this phrase often, but when was the last time we actually applied it? Minimalism stems from the idea of the bare minimum – so what is the least amount of something that will be sufficient to meet your goals? Minimalism is and has been trending for a while now in the fashion world, but it also has applications in other areas of our life. After Marie Kondo, author of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing, revolutionized our way of thinking with the simple phrase, "If it doesn't spark joy, get rid of it!", the concept of minimalism came to the forefront of popular awareness.

But more important than if the contents of your closet spark joy is if the contents of your life spark joy. There are so many other areas of our lives that we can apply this same philosophy to: in romance, in friendships, in the workplace and in our inner mind. If the people that you are choosing to surround yourself with and the activities that you are participating in are not sparking joy for you, maybe it's time to reevaluate. Below are some steps that can help maximize the delight and satisfaction in your life, and re-ignite that joie de vivre, the joy of life.

LESS MAKEUP / BEAUTY PRODUCTS: Women today are told that we need an exorbitant amount of products to look beautiful, but that doesn't always hold true. Try to reduce your skincare and makeup collection to only the products you use regularly; this way, you will save money and allow your skin to breathe.

START A MEDITATION PRACTICE: Even just five minutes a day of breathing exercises and mindful awareness can bring immense benefits. You will have greater clarity of mind, lower stress levels, increased productivity, improved concentration, deeper relaxation and much more. Look for the app One Giant Mind to start your practice and foster deeper connections with your inner self and the world around you.

WRITE LETTERS INSTEAD OF TEXTING: Taking the time to sift through your mind allows you to process your thoughts and better express yourself. Plus, it's a more personal and meaningful way to communicate with those you really care about.

SIMPLIFY YOUR DIET: Just eliminating excess caffeine, sugar and processed foods can work wonders for your body. In addition to increasing your water intake, try to include more leafy greens and whole foods - you'll feel better by eating naturally and your body will thank you.

DONATE TO THRIFT SHOPS: Take some time to sort through your wardrobe and see if there are any things you can let go of if they don't spark joy!

In the eyes of Hollywood, a successful date is comprised of candlelit dinners, expensive steaks and dozens of roses. It’s not hard to get caught up in the idea of lavish dating when we grew up watching movies that celebrate the extravagant love lives of our favorite characters. So it may come as a shock to realize that normally, date night consists of watching your favorite TV shows rather than going out to upscale restaurants.

A low-key date night doesn’t have to be synonymous with “Netflix and chill," though. Some of the best dates are unconventional and don’t involve much money or time invested in planning. In fact, keeping a date low-profile allows for deeper conversations and an emphasis on good company rather than, flashy locations. Of course, the occasional fancy date can keep things fresh, but you can have just as much fun running errands, cooking each other’s favorite meals at home, or simply being alone together. Staying in allows you to form personal connections with your significant other and learn what they’re really like when they’re relaxed, whether that be while studying together or sharing new music.

Learning to be comfortable with doing nothing is the key to a healthy relationship. The pressure of constantly craving dates that are glamorous or exotic puts unnecessary stress on what should simply be a way to spend time together.
