PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Welcome to the Southwest Council - Fly Fishers International Fly Faire

It is my pleasure as Acting President of the Southwest Council – Fly Fishers International to welcome you to our 7th Annual Faire.

The Southwest Council is a subgroup of Fly Fishers International (FFI) based in Livingston, MT. It was formed in 1965 by a group of 12 Fly Fishing clubs gathering together in Eugene, Oregon with the purpose to promote all aspects of fly fishing. Lee Wulff wrote the Preamble, “We, in conclave assem- bled, out of a firm and abiding conviction that fly fishing is a way of gives to its followers the finest form of outdoor recreation and natural understanding, do hereby join in common effort in order to maintain and further fly fishing as a sport, and, through it, to promote and conserve angling resources, inspire its angling literature, advance its fellowship and broaden the understanding of all anglers in the spirit of true sport”.

Our Southwest Council includes over 23 clubs throughout Southern California and Nevada, it also includes many members that do not belong to clubs. We promote conservation of natural resources and strive to improve fishing knowledge. We are a voice of organized fly fishing but avoid any political activity. We cherish the spirit of fellowship among fly fishers.

While at the Faire, there will be something for everyone from beginners to experts. We have Vendors, Presentations, Demonstration fly tyers, instruction and demonstrations, Kids’ casting and tying, and Conservation and Community programs on display. Fly Fishing is an activity that can be enjoyed in many locations throughout our region from small streams and creeks to large river sys- tems, lakes, and, even our ocean.

Conservation is one of our pillars. You will find a booth at the Faire devoted to conservation projects that the Southwest Council has participated in over the last decade. Member clubs such as Golden State Flycasters, San Diego Fly Fishers, Sierra Pacific Fly Fishers, Deep Creek Fly Fishers, Fly Fishers of Orange County, Pasadena Casting Club, Southern Sierra Fly Fishers, Hi-Desert Fly Fishers, Aguabonita Fly Fishers, Long Beach Casting Club, Long Beach Fly Fishers, Downey Fly Fishers, Conejo Fly Fishers, Sespe Fly Fishers, Santa Barbara Fly Fishers, Santa Clarita Casting Club, Santa Lucia Fly Fishers, Kaweah Fly Fishers, Carson Fly Fishers, Las Vegas Fly Fishers, Streamborn Fly Fishers, and Wilderness Fly Fishers have active conservation projects throughout our region from stream restoration to genetic sampling

1 of native trout and Steelhead recovery. Many of these clubs work closely with State agencies such as Calif. Dept. of Fish and Wildlife and Nevada Dept. of Wildlife.

Education is another pillar that supports us. We are active in Trout in the Classroom where thousands of children experience the hatching of trout eggs within a classroom aquarium and accompany those fish to their ultimate release within our local waters. We also assist Outward Bound teens to experience fly fishing in a wilderness setting, often catching their first trout or bass. Most of the clubs offer casting classes, , and fishing skill development.

Our third pillar goes out to the Community where we support programs such as Casting for Recov- ery which helps survivors of breast cancer recover from their disease by lifting their spirits through fly fishing. Another program, Project Healing Waters, provides therapeutic assistance through fly fishing to our Nation’s Veterans. In some instances, these programs can be life-saving.

It takes many members to put together the Fly Fishing Faire. A special “Thank You!” to Michael Schweit (Special Projects), Susi Wright (Secretary), Connie Bullock (Volunteers), Debbie Sharpton and Gary Applebee (Conservation), Carl Crawford (Youth), Rich Bollinger (Trout in the Classroom), Carole Katz (Project Healing Waters), Teresa and Carol Ontiveros (Casting for Recovery), Karen Hall (Women’s Program), Greg LaPolla (Website), Steven Fernandez (Fly Tying), Eric Callow (Casting), Melinda Burns (Membership), Cece Rubin (Communications), and Becky Rakisits (Social Media).

A very special “Thank You” to the Pasadena Casting Club for the use of their casting pond and club- house.

So, welcome to the Fly Fishing Faire! We hope that the Faire provides a great experience for all of you.

Steve Schalla Acting President

Our Fly Fishing community has lost two amazing people, Jon Hart and Celine Bayla. Jon and Celine were both advocates for river conservation and ambassadors to the fly fishing community. They both gave back to their communities through volunteering with Kern River Conservancy, Keepers of the Kern and Southern Sierra Fly Fishers. We are beyond heart broken and devastated of their passing. They were devoted volunteers helping our community to keep our river clean and passing the torch to the next generation of fly fishers.

3 CONSERVATION MESSAGE

Conservation is the first pillar in Fly Fishers International’s mission statement “Conservation. Education. Community.” At the Southwest Council conservation is a priority. You will find the Southwest Council, our affiliate clubs and partners installing monofilament collection tubes The Southwest Council’s Conservation Committee through affiliate clubs and partnerships covers waters large and small from the Sierras to the Mexican border. Get involved or bring an issue to our attention, you can make a difference.

Gary Applebee and Debbie Sharpton, co-chairs, [email protected] RELIEVING THE TRASH BURDEN

Events like this are moving towards more use of technology to reduce our carbon footprint. Less paper means less waste and less cost too. Here are some of the efforts you will see at our Faire. Water – we do not provide or sell bottled water at our events. We provide multiple 5 gallon jugs that are full of ice water. You can fill your own bottle or use one of our recyclable cups. Plastic – Most items we use have an alternative material to use besides plastic. But if there is no sub- stitute, we make sure that anything we use can be recycled. Metal (soda cans) – Nothing like having a nice cold soft drink! Those are fully recyclable and we are ready for them. Paper – Anything we print is on post-consumer content paper. Saves on energy and it can be recy- cled. Recycling – The Southwest Council will be providing containers and compostable trash bags to col- lect plastic, metal and paper at our event. Our goal is to get to a place in our events where the only thing left when it is over are fond memories.
