The arduous task of beach seining all year around was shared by many members of the California State Fisheries Laboratory staff; we are particularly grateful to Mr. Parke H. Young and Mr. John L. Baxter for their willing and continued help throughout the years. Mr. Frederick B. Hagerman was project leader for the first year of the investigation, until his recall into the Air Force, and he gave the project an excellent start. Many others gave help and advice, notably Mr. John E. Fitch, Mr. Phil M. Roedel, Mr. David C. Joseph, and Dr. F. N. Clark of this laboratory. Dr. Carl L. Hubbs of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at La Jolla gave valuable advice, and we are indebted to the late Mr. Conrad Limbaugh of the same institution for accounts of his observations on surf fishes, and for SCUBA diving instructions. The project was fortunate in securing able seasonal help, particularly from Mr.

There are plenty of places to fish and lots of fish to catch! There are nine different species of surfperch found off the Oregon coast. The most popular surfperch is the Redtail. It is popular because it is very tasty and frequently caught. Redtails are found from Baja California northward up into Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Redtail surfperch are predominantly surf dwellers off sandy beaches. Surfperch fishing (courtesy of ODFW) Typically, they live in large schools in the surf zone about 30 feet from the shoreline (or between the second and fourth breaker row. They are attracted to the deeper holes and areas with high sand erosion. These fish concentrate just before spawning in the spring and early summer in sheltered waters such as estuaries and protected bay areas.

Red Drum Natural History and Fishing Techniques in South Carolina by Dr. Charles Wenner Educational Report No. 17 Marine Resources Research Institute Marine Resources Division South Carolina Department of Natural Resources P.O. Box 12559 Charleston, SC 29422 Original Printing October 1992 PREFACE In the summer of 1986, the Marine Resources Research Institute of the South Carolina Wildlife and Marine Resources Department began intensive studies of the natural history and dynamics of recreationally important inshore fishes in our estuaries and bays. The major objec- tive of these studies was to obtain the scientific knowledge required to develop policies and regu- lations that protect and maintain these economically and ecologically valuable resources, includ- ing red drum, spotted sea trout, and southern flounder. This publication is the first in a series that is being developed to distribute the findings of these studies to the angling public. In addi- tion to information about natural history, we have also included a section on fishing techniques designed to assist readers, particularly beginning anglers, in their piscatorial pursuits as well as a section explaining the approach and rationale for conservation efforts that have been or soon will be proposed. As a result of this work, I hope the recreational fisherman will gain a better understanding and appreciation of the actions that are required to ensure that an abundant supply of fish is available for future generations. It has been said by men who are much wiser than I, that the Lord does not subtract the days spent fishing form an individual’s allotted time on earth.
