Vol.29 pp. 81-121 (1980) Fishing Methods and Gears in Panay Island, Philippines*1 Gunzo Kawamura*2 and Teodora Bagarinao*3 Abstract The authors surveyed the fishing methods and gears in Panay and smaller neighboring islands in the Philippines in September-December 1979 and in March-May 1980. This paper is a report on the fishing methods and gears used in these islands, with special focus on the traditional and primitive ones. The term "fishing" is commonly used to mean the capture of many aquatic animals — fishes, crustaceans, mollusks, coelenterates, echinoderms, sponges, and even birds and mammals. Moreover, the harvesting of algae underwater or from the intertidal zone is often an important job for the fishermen. Fishing method is the manner by which the aquatic organisms are captured or collected; fishing gear is the implement developed for the purpose. Oftentimes, the gear alone is not sufficient and auxiliary instruments have to be used to realize a method. A fishing method can be applied by means of various gears, just as a fishing gear can sometimes be used in the appli cation of several methods. Commonly, only commercial fishing is covered in fisheries reports. Although traditional and primitive fishing is done on a small scale, it is still very important from the viewpoint of supply of animal protein.

    Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Division of Law Enforcement Weekly Report Patrol, Protect, Preserve November 30, 2018 through December 13, 2018 This report represents some events the FWC handled over the past two weeks; however, it does not include all actions taken by the Division of Law Enforcement. NORTHWEST REGION CASES BAY COUNTY Officer Palmer and Reserve Officer Chesser were conducting patrols along Deer Point Dam when they saw an individual throwing a cast net on the freshwater side of the dam. The officers conducted a resource inspection of the individual and found him to be in possession of 64 bream, eight black bass and seven speckled perch. The violations of taking game fish by illegal method, over the bag limit of pan fish, over the bag limit of black bass and no freshwater fishing license were addressed. All the fish were returned to the water alive. CALHOUN COUNTY Officer Hayes was conducting surveillance targeting night hunting when he saw a truck driving slowly down a rural road with a light bar on top of the truck illuminating both sides of the road. Officer Hayes followed the truck for approximately two miles. When it stopped, the driver stepped out and shot a deer standing on the shoulder of the road. The suspect was cited for night hunting and road hunting. Officer Baber was working night hunting when he saw a vehicle driving slowly down a road and displaying a light on a farm field. Moments later, he heard a rifle shot. The vehicle continued traveling toward Officer Baber’s location and the light continued to be displayed from the passenger’s window.

Saiful Islam and Yahia Mahmud Riverine Sub-Station (Lake Fisheries), Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI), Rangamati Hill District, Bangladesh Abstract: An experiment was conducted from November 2012 to June 2014 at different areas of Kaptai Lake to understand the impact of brush shelter (a fish aggregating device, FAD) on the production potentiality of the lake in context of Bangladesh. During the study period, four important areas in Rangamati district named as Rangamati sadar, Kaptai, Langadu and Barkal upazilla were selected. In the two consecutive years and in the same locations, each of the brush shelters were established in the month of December in 2012 and 2013; and harvested in the month of May of the following years in 2013 and 2014, respectively, to study the water quality parameters, species composition, fish production, abundance of fishes and their juveniles in the brush shelters. The average size of the brush shelters were 15 decimal consisted of floating aquatic weeds and branches and roots of trees. Water quality parameters such as air temperature, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, CO2 , pH, total alkalinity, transparency and water depth were found within the suitable range for fishes. A total of 20 species of fish including one exotic species (Oreochromis niloticus) and two species of prawn were recorded in 2012-13 and 17 species of fish and two species of prawn were recorded from harvested brush shelter in 2013-14.
