Tremors were felt in Pakistan, northern India, and Tajikistan. The magnitude 7.5 quake was centered in the mountainous Hindu Kush region, 75km (46 miles) south of Faizabad, according to the US Geological Survey. (source) According to social media reports, damages have occurred in Badakhshan, Kunar, Nagarhar, and Takhar provinces in Afghanistan. At least 16 children died in a school in Taluqan, Takhar province. There are reports of landslides blocking the Kabul-Jalalabad highway. In Pakistan, the provinces of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Gilgit Baltistan, and Punjab have been impacted. KP received the most damage, especially the district of Chitral. Medicins san Frontieres has treated at least 133 emergency patients at Timergara Hospital, and Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar has asked for blood donations of all types. The Pakistan military is conducting rescues and assessing damages. There are reports of landslides blocking the Karakorum highway, and landslides in Neelum and Hunza Valleys. Tremors were felt in Pakistan, northern India, and Tajikistan. (source) Buildings were evacuated in the capitals of all three countries, and communications were disrupted in many areas. Initial reports speak of people killed in Afghanistan as well as in Pakistan. Officials said the quake happened at a depth of 212km. The magnitude was initially put at 7.7 but later downgraded. Afghanistan Highlights: 26 Oct: ● Kunar Province: ○ Tribal elders in Kunar's Sawkay district report one village was hit in Dewagal valley, after a mountain slide. Children and women among injured. (source) ○ Kunar officials say 100s of homes destroyed in the province. At least 32 people dead and 83 injured. Hundreds of cattle dead across province. (source) ○ Officials in Kunar province say at least 14 people have been killed in Kunar province and 40 injured. More than 200 homes have been destroyed or damaged. (source) ● Badakhshan Province: ○ Unconfirmed reports of severe damage & deaths in Badakshan's Kishim district. (source) ○ The Badakhshan governor reports 10 killed including a woman, 24 wounded. 1428 houses are destroyed in Warduj, Keshem & Sheghnan districts. (source) ● Takhar Province: ○ At least 12 girls died, all of them under 16, when pupils in Taluqan, northern Afghanistan, rushed for the school exit. (source) Pakistan Highlights: 26 Oct: ● Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar, Pakistan is appealing for blood of all types. (source) ● The Pakistan Information Minister says Dir, Swat, Shangla, Peshawar, Charsadda, Mardan, Bajaur and Mohmand Agency were the most affected areas. (source) ● Azad Jammu and Kashmir:, (AJK. Azad Kashmir) ○ Reports of landslides in Neelum Valley, Pakistan. Ambulances and rescue workers are reaching the area. (source) ● Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province (PKP): ○ Mansehra district officials report they have successfully evacuated more than 1000 vehicles from Naran Kaghan and Batakindi areas despite heavy rain and snow. (source) Only 10 vehicles remaining at Naran, couldn't move due to faults. They will be evacuated tomorrow early morning. (source) ○ Mansehra District: Around 20 police & 12 laborers stuck at Basel area. They will be evacuated by helicopter tomorrow as the weather clears. (source) ○ According to Pakistan’s military: Monday's quake has killed 123 and wounded 956 in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. (source) Army helicopters and C- 130 planes have launched damage assessment/rescue work (source) The majority of deaths occurred in the Malakand district. (source) ○ Chitral, near the Afghan border, was reportedly badly hit. There have been landslides, extensive damage to infrastructure and a lot of old houses have been completely damaged.
