1 Matt Phillips, ‘French Studies: Literature, 2000 to the Present Day’, Year’s Work in Modern Language Studies, 80 (2020), 209–260 DOI for published version: https://doi.org/10.1163/22224297-08001010 [TT] Literature, 2000 to the Present Day [A] Matt Phillips, Royal Holloway, University of London This survey covers the years 2017 and 2018 [H2]1. General Alexandre Gefen, Réparer le monde: la littérature française face au XXIe siècle, Corti, 2017, 392 pp., argues that contemporary French literature has undergone a therapeutic turn, with both writing and reading now conceived in terms of healing, helping, and doing good. G. defends this thesis with extraordinary thoroughness as he examines the turn’s various guises: as objects of literature’s care here feature the self and its fractures; trauma, both individual and collective; illness, mental and physical; mourning and forgetfulness, personal and historical; and endangered bonds, with humans and beyond, on local and global scales. This amounts to what G. calls a new ‘paradigme clinique’ and, like any paradigm shift, this one appears replete with contradictions, tensions, and opponents, not least owing to the residual influence of preceding paradigms; G.’s analysis is especially impressive when unpicking the ways in which contemporary writers negotiate their sustained attachments to a formal, intransitive conception of literature, and/or more overtly revolutionary political projects. His thesis is supported by an enviable breadth of reference: G. lays out the diverse intellectual, technological, and socioeconomic histories at work in this development, and touches on close to 200 contemporary writers. Given the broad, synthetic nature of the work’s endeavour, individual writers/works are rarely discussed for longer than a page, and though G.’s commentary is always insightful, specialists on particular authors or social/historical trends will surely find much to work with and against here.

  • Dissertation M.C. Cissell December 2016
ARC OF THE ABSENT AUTHOR: THOMAS PYNCHON’S TRAJECTORY FROM ENTROPY TO GRACE A Dissertation Submitted to the Department of English and German Philology In partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of English Philology Matthew Clayton Cissell December 2016 Director: María Felisa López Liquete Co-director: Ángel Chaparro Sainz (c)2017 MATTHEW CLAYTON CISSELL Abstract The central thesis of this dissertation is that Thomas Pynchon has come to occupy a specific position in the field of literature and that this can be seen in his latest novel, Against the Day , in which he is not so much writing about the past or even the present, but about what the present can become, about where it might be driven. Pynchon is self-consciously exploring the politics in the discursive field in which his book is situated, using the fin-de-siècle to highlight the ways that the present is geared toward catastrophe and that people, in a dans macabre , hurl themselves toward that endgame. The theoretical view and methodology behind my analysis of the novel draws to a great extent on the work of Pierre Bourdieu, specifically his sociological literary analysis. This sets an academic precedent in studies of Pynchon’s novels but it also requires applying an approach that has several necessary and onerous steps. In order to see how the social space of the novel is a refracted image of the author’s own social world one must analyse the field of power, after that the literary field and the positions of agents, next the space of possibilities, all of which help one understand the genesis of the author’s habitus and thus his trajectory and the creative project that develops.

  • Cervical Cancer Is Strongly Associated with the Persistent and Untreated Infection with Specific Types of Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
Making evidence, making legitimacy: The introduction of HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccines in Colombia Oscar Javier Maldonado Castañeda B.A. Sociology; M.Sc. Sociology Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy May 2015 Department of Sociology Lancaster University DECLARATION I declare that this thesis is my own work and that it has not been submitted in any form for the award of a higher degree elsewhere. Oscar Javier Maldonado Castañeda 13th May 2015 Calvin and Hobbes, 1985-1995 Abstract Cervical cancer is strongly associated with the persistent and untreated infection with specific types of Human Papillomavirus (HPV). There are currently two vaccines which protect against the HPV types associated with 70% of cervical cancers. In 2013 the Colombian government introduced Gardasil® (Merck’s HPV vaccine) into the Colombian Expanded Programme of Immunisation. Since that year, three million girls have received the vaccine in Colombia. This thesis offers an empirical analysis of the configurations of evidence, efficiency and anticipation that this intervention entails. Based on diverse sources including policy documents, scientific literature, memoranda, minutes and interviews with experts, consultants and members of the National Committee of Immunisation Practices, I show how evidence and efficiency are the result of different calculation practices. They constitute modes of ordering heterogeneous sets of objects, data and people. These orderings perform different values, including trust, efficiency, legitimacy, accountability and objectivity. I argue that evidence and efficiency are performed in health policy by means of calculation devices such systematic reviews, cost-effective analysis, statistical modelling and pharmaco-economics, and that these practices are not isolated from the political and cultural practices and discourses that constitute a policy.

A Nightmare or Benevolent Dream: Global Violence and the Libidinal Economy in Latin American Literature i Abstract This thesis examines three novels by Latin American writers that were translated into English in 2008: 2666 by Chilean writer Roberto Bolaño, Senselessness by Honduran-Salvadoran writer Horacio Castellanos Moya, and The Armies by Colombian writer Evelio Rosero. These novels look at actual instances of violence in Mexico, Guatemala, and Colombia, contributing to a social critique of historical and ongoing inequality and injustice in Latin America and the global South. However, their approach differs from narratives that contextualise violence in Latin America and others that exceptionalise it. This thesis argues that it is possible and often preferable for readers in the North to be alienated by exaggerated images of Latin American violence, or to distance themselves from the economic, social, and political situations that exacerbate violence in the South. A close textual analysis of each novel reveals that they express the human potential in desire for and to create excess, which has the effect of universalising guilt against the tendency to contextualise or localise events of mass murder in Mexico, Central, and South America. Using the psychoanalytic theories of subjectivity developed by Jacques Lacan, Slavoj Žižek, and others, this thesis argues that it is impossible for anyone to extricate themselves from the libidinal economy that occupies 2666, Senselessness, and The Armies.
