DURATION INTRODUCTION 8 Days Cruise along the serene and isolated fjords of Troms on this incredible 8 day voyage. On LOCATIONS board the Nooderlicht you will have a true expedition experience as you immerse yourself in the beauty of the Norwegian Fjords. Encounter more than one species of whale as well Norway as other unique wildlife including White-tailed eagles. The quaint Nooderlicht offers a smaller voyage capacity offering an intimate, flexible and completely immersive experience as you look out for the legendary Northern Lights. ITINERARY DAY 1: Embarkation in Tromoso Your adventure begins in Tromso, nicknamed the “Paris of the North,” located in an area rich with Norse and Sámi history. Enjoy exploring this sub Arctic Norwegian town, said to have been inhabited since the last ice age. All voyages with s/v Rembrandt van Rijn aim at departing from Tromsø in the evening of day one, while s/v Noorderlicht will set sail in the early morning of day two. All passengers of Rembrandt are kindly asked to board the vessel by 17:00, while passengers of Noorderlicht are welcome to board the vessel between 17:00 and 23:00. Copyright Chimu Adventures. We spend the night near the small village of Finnkroken. This small village offers good opportunities to see the Northern Lights. DAY 7: Under The Northern Lights Arrival in Tromsø around midday. In the afternoon you enjoy free time to shop for souvenirs in town, visit a museum, or simply take a walk in the fresh winter air. After spending the last night on board, you disembark on day eight (Saturday) with memories that will accompany you wherever your next adventure lies. DAY 8: Disembarkation in Tromso Disembarkation in the port of Tromso at 9:00 a.m. at the latest. Transfer to the airport on your own (not included). B. & Roberts, D. 1978: Tectonostratigraphic succession and devel opment of the Finnmarkian nappe sequence, North Norway. Norges geol. Unders. 343, 53-71. Detailed investigations of the Finnmarkian nappe sequence within the 1:250 000 map-sheets 'Hammerfest', 'Nordreisa' and 'Honningsvåg' have revealed a complex construction of discrete nappes, sub-nappes and minor thrust slices. In the Kalak (Reisa) Nappe Complex the nappes are composed not only of the übiquitous Vendian to Cambrian lithostratigraphy but also of proven (dated) or suspected, older, Precambrian, high-grade gneissic/amphibolitic units and slices of Raipas carbonates and volcanites. In places, thick sequences of gneisses and schists have been converted to blastomylonites and locally ultramylonites, mainly during the first two of four principal deformation episodes. On a regional scale, major Dj folds are present in northwesterly areas whereas further southeast a more homogeneous flattening deformation prevailed. D 2 fold structures, related to the regionally developed principal foliation, show a variable development in style and trend with fold axial rotations into a NW-SE trend related to high internal strains, noticeably towards the lower parts of the nappe units. These deformations were wholly Finnmarkian (late Cambrian - early Ordovician). Nappe translation, linked to D 2, diminished in magnitude towards the northeast. Later deformation episodes include imbrication structures on all scales which can be shown to relate to the thrusting of higher nappes containing Ordo-Silurian stratigraphies. These date to late Silurian time. The Silurian emplaced nappes continue southwards into the well-documented nappe complexes of Nordland and Trøndelag.

But then reality hits me when I jump into the deep blue water off the sailboat, the Arctic Ice and shock sets in. It might have been brash to jump off a snowy boat into an ice-cold fjord so I quickly put on some clothes and am handed a typical Norse specialty; a shot of Aquavit, a double distilled potato 40% liqueur.. Skål! While most skiers stored away their skis in April, it is not quite the end of our winter. We found the ultimate way to prolong our ski season by a few weeks. We are at the small Norwegian airport of Tromsø, 300 kilometres above the Arctic Circle, where we welcome our tired friends, who have flown in from North America. Our crew for this Arctic adventure consists of pro skier Molly Baker, a film crew from Mt. Baker and a few of our lucky Dutch friends. It’s an eclectic group and although our backgrounds are completely different, we all share a passion for skiing. For the next month we’ll be traveling by ski, boat and car through the Lyngen Alps in Northern Norway. In this remote area on the same latitude as Siberia and Alaska, where impressive mountains and deep blue fjords dominate the scenery.

Dezember 2011 ISSN 0044-5223 Bergtrollus dzimbowski gen. n., sp. n., a remarkable new tardigrade genus and species from the nival zone of the Lyngen Alps, Norway (Tardigrada: Milnesiidae) HIERONYMUS DASTYCH (with 51 gures) Abstract Bergtrollus dzimbowski gen. n., sp. n., a new genus and species of Tardigrada (the Milnesiidae) from moss in the nival zone of the Lyngen Alps (Norway), is described. This is the second milnesiid genus, apart from Milnesium Doyère, 1840, known to oc- cur in the Northern Hemisphere. The new tardigrade is characterized by a strikingly long and protrusible proboscis (‘snout’) formed by the prolonged mouth region. A simi- lar organ in Eutardigrada has also been reported in Milnesioides exsertum Claxton, 1999 and in the recently discovered Limmenius porcellus Horning et al., 1978 (see Claxton 1999) (both Milnesiidae). These species are known from limited records in New Zealand and Australia. The shape and length of the buccal tube in Bergtrollus gen. n. is intermediate between those of Milnesioides and Limmenius, but the mouth cavity is similar to Milnesium. Diagnostic morphological characters and identi cation key for all four genera of the Milnesiidae are presented and the phylogenetic status of the new taxon within the family is discussed. The recession of mountain glaciers worldwide is increasing global sea level and, in many regions, human activities will have to adapt to changes in surface hydrology. Thus, it is important to provide up-to-date analyses of glacier change and the factors modulating their response to climate warming. Here we report changes in the extent of >120 glaciers on the Lyngen Peninsula, northern Norway, where glacier runoff is utilised for hydropower and where glacial lake outburst floods have occurred. Glaciers covered at least 114 km2 in 1953 and we compare this inventory with those from 1988, 2001 and a new one from 2014, and previously-dated Little Ice Age (LIA) limits. Results show a − steady reduction in area (∼0.3% a 1) between their LIA maximum (∼1915) and 1988, consistent with increasing summer air temperatures, but recession paused between 1988 and 2001, coinciding with increased winter precipitation.
