SECRETARY’S REPORT

Ladies and Gentlemen, Your Committee has much pleasure in submitting for your approval the 87th Annual Report and Statement of Receipts and Payments for season 2016/17.

A summary of the Club’s achievements this past season follows:

On Field: Premiers 2nd XI (Thomson Shield), U14C (JD Norman Shield), ECA Veterans (Division 3), ECA Veterans (Division 5). Runners Up: 1st XI (Dunstan Shield), Veterans (BHRDCA – Legends B), ECA U17 girls (Anna Lanning Shield). Participation: A total of 225 players represented Mont Albert Cricket Club in season 2016/17. Joel Guley led all comers with 24 matches for the season, closely followed by Quentin McLean on 23 and Luke Pich on 22.

Some significant milestones were reached this season.Jeff Mollison became the first player in MACC history to reach600senior games for the club. Along with Jeff’s achievements, at this year’s presentation night we also celebrated Hal Jones’ 50thyear at the Mont Albert cricket Club. The longevity, loyalty and commitment to the Mont Albert Cricket Club from these 2 players isincredible and should be celebrated. James Wright also achieved the milestone of 200 senior games this season.

Thank you to the committee, captains, coaches, team managers and volunteers for your efforts throughout the season.

Jack Joslin’s hard work over a number of years saw finals campaigns for the first XI in both the Kookaburra T20 competition as well as the Dunstan Shield (where we unfortunately fell at the last hurdle). Jack’s leadership will see the first XI push to go one better next year.

Under the guidance of Jim Alexander, our junior program continues to develop. Jim’s commitment over a number of years has seen an increase in the number of junior teams, as well as an ever growing girls program. There are some exciting developments in our junior program on the way.

Dani Hedley was a welcome addition to the committee, playing a significant role in junior advertising and recruitment. Through her efforts, our Milo numbers grew to more than 50 children, who along with their parents, enjoyed their Friday nights under the guidance of Rick Barker and Charlie Thorn. We entered our first ever team in the Milo T20Blast competition, which was led by Howard Bertus. We are hopeful that the introduction tocricket that these players receive will see them transition to long term players at the club.

In her first year on the committee, Dani was also instrumental in organising the junior photographs, and along with Sue Jackson ran another successful Ladies Luncheon in support of the McGrath Foundation. A number of other successful social events were held, with Chris Jackson once again coordinating these events. Pete Guley and Wayne Hawkin’s Melbourne Cup Calcutta was a highlight, and looks set to be a fixture on the MACC social calendar.

Wayne Harris led a resurgent veteran’s program. A reduction to 3 teams meant we were not as pressured for numbers, which translated to on field success. All three teams made the grand final with 2 Premierships added to the trophy cabinet. Thank you to Harvey Jones for managing the website and laying the foundations for a new online clothing range, and to Tim Wrightand Dale Greedy for your service on the committee.

As always, special mention should be made of Jack Wright, Roger Smith, Peter Burchall and Richard Harding who are the best group of clubmen and volunteers we could hope for.Peter Coombs did another outstanding job as first XI scorer and Rick Barker once again undertook the unenviable task of Chairman of Selectors.

Thank you to Peter Knox (President) andAllen Burton (Treasurer)for their continued support and service to the Mont Albert Cricket Club. Thank you to all of our sponsors for their generous support.

This year’s Chris Dunning Trophy (Secretary’s award for best report) required those submitting reports to use the words ‘dynamic’ and ‘’ in the same sentence. 4th XI (and newly appointed life member) Allen Burton is the recipient of this year’s award for the most contextual (although not entirely complimentary) use.

Congratulations to the trophy winners for season 2016-17. The winners of the various awards for the season are as follows;

For and on behalf of the committee Greg Cull SECRETARY PRESIDENT’S REPORT

This season our club fielded 8 Senior XIs (including 3 Veteran XIs) with all but one XI participating in the finals (the 5thXI finished 5th); returning a back to back 2nd XI premiership, 2 Vets flags, a Dunstan Shield runner up, a Veterans runner up and 2 Semi Finalists. When taken with a much improved Qtr Final appearance in the ECA T20 competition an U17 Girls runner up and a Premiership for the U14Cs then we have had a very strong year on field.

Additionally, we added a twilight T20 Blast team on a Friday, our Milo into Cricket group is thriving, we contributed 5 players to the ECA U21team including the Captain and Vice Captain (Andrew Padbury and James Guley) and 3 members of the ECA Dunstan Shield team of the year (Andrew Padbury, Brett Watkins & Eddie Wilson). Our Junior section continued to build under Jim Alexander’s leadership and at the other end of the scale Wayne Harris consolidation of the Veterans into 3 teams was very successful on and off field.

Off field our new practice facilities are well advanced and will be ready for the start of the season. The new nets will greatly reduce setup and take down times, provide much needed training capacity and allow for a much more individualised and focussed approach to training with everyone training together and close to all our other facilities.

With Dani Hedley and Sue Jackson leading; the McGrath Foundation Ladies Luncheon was again sold out with 120+ there on the day and is unquestionably a great day in the club calendar. Pete Guley and Wayne Hawkins brought all their know how to run a very successful first up Melbourne Cup Calcutta – watch this one it will be better again next season. So it’s not surprising that one of our more experienced senior off field prognosticators and contributors has remarked to me that he is “stumped if he can recall a time when the Club has been in more dynamic shape”.

I wanted to say a little more about our on field senior leadership. Greg Cull taking the second XI to back to back flags is a major achievement after a long 2nd XI Premiership drought, which will strengthen the club as Greg’s boys play in a higher grade and will better prepare players coming into the firsts. Our first XI Captain Jack Joslin is seeing reward for his efforts and while I know he isn’t anywhere near satisfied with Dunstan runners up, he should be pleased with performances across the season, individual development and the emerging depth through the club. Robbie Carruthers had a solid first year as Captain of the 3s and Allen Burton (with help from Molly) managed the 4s into the finals really well. Gus McLean again had a great year with the bat and his boys battled hard just missing out on the finals.

The GF loss in the 1s was a disappointment, as I don’t think as a team we performed to the maximum of our ability and form line. Nevertheless it’s important to congratulate North Balwyn on an excellent season and acknowledge them as the better team. I also think we have significant improvement ahead of us over the next few seasons and we must provide every opportunity to realise the improvement that is clearly there if we are to challenge for a Dunstan again in the immediate future.

The end of the season offered the opportunity to recognise the contribution of 4 outstanding members of our club. Hal Jones’ 50 uninterrupted years as a player must surely be unprecedented. His longevity and durability is legendary. His action is unchanging and his craft only gets better. Jeff Mollison passed 600 games with the club during which he has scored more than 10,000 runs and taken 500+ . To have both these fine men in the same club says much about our culture and what we value.

Greg Cull won a Dunstan Shield for us. He has Captained back to back 2nd XI Premierships, he is Club Secretary and an off and on field contributor from a young age. Not a day goes past whereGreg is not working for the club. He is a worthy recipient of life membership.

Allen Burton is a 325 game, 7500+ runs and 160+ veteran of the club. He jointly holds, with Tim Wright, the record for most centuries made for the club with 9. He is a long standing Committee member and the current Treasurer of the club. He too is a worthy new Life Member.

The club took great pleasure in recognising these four fine cricketers and men.

My thanks go to the Club’s Committee members for all the work theyhave undertakenand the collegial way we work as a group with a particular thanks to Dani Hedley in her first year. Dani brought new ideas and great energy to the job. Not to forget the “old blokes” who do so much to present the club in first class condition and work to provide much to the playing group. The club is extremely fortunate to have so many great contributors – thanks boys! The challenge for the coming season is for the 1s to go one better and deliver on their potential in the coming season.

Go Monts ! In Cricket, P. B. Knox President Mont Albert Cricket Club

THE FIRST XI

We began pre-season in the wintry month of August, with a few poorly attended gym sessions at Anytime Fitness in Kew. Once we started bat vs ball at Xavier Indoor nets the turnout significantly improved. We also welcomed a new player in Brett Watkins to the club who would prove to play a substantial role throughout the season in the 1st XI. The poor weather leading into Rnd 1 meant we were unable to get an official hit-out against another opposition, having to manage with an Intra-Club game on the Sunday afternoon after the AFL Grand Final.

The so-called tradition continued with another Round 1 of a season called off due to wet weather. Luckily it was to be rescheduled for a reserve day on Sunday 13th November. Round 2 saw us kick off the official season with a game at home to St Kevin’s. We welcomed our overseas professional and star of a bloke Eddie Wilson into the team and he would have an immediate impact on the pitch. Winning the toss, we batted and posted a solid total of 5/171, with Joslin (64no) and Wilson (42) putting on 92 for the 4th wicket partnership. We started slowly with the ball as St Kevin’s openers put on 84 for the first wicket. Once we took the first wicket we were able to put the brakes on the scoring and took regular wickets, causing panic from some of their batsmen – resulting in us winning by 5 runs in a tight first hit-out for the season. Padbury, Taylor and Jackson all took 2 wickets. Always good to get off to a winning start.

Round 3 was also to be washed out to poor weather, so our second official game (round 4) was at home to North Balwyn at home in another one-day affair. North Balwyn won the toss and batted on what was a road. They got off to a good flying start and continued throughout their innings until Watkins was called on to bowl – taking great figures of 5/34 off his 8 overs. This great individual performance kept North Balwyn to 9/237 off their 40 overs. It was always going to be a tough chase and everything had to go right for us with the bat. We made a good fist of the chase with Wright making 34 and Joslin 85, however lost wickets at inopportune times, meaning we were restricted to 8/200 off our 40. Back to the drawing board with a focus to restrict with the ball and lift in the field.

It was to be our third home game in a row to start the season with a clash against Donvale in a one- day game. We won the toss and sent Donvale into bat. We got off to a great start with the ball, certifying the decision to bowl first, with Hargreaves taking 3/9 off his 6 overs. They were able t put on a couple of strong partnerships through the middle to make a solid total of 8/168. We knew if we batted to our potential and focused on rotating the strike, the boundaries would come. From the outset of our innings we were able to score freely and put on crucial partnerships and won the game comfortably, making 4/170 off 34 overs. It was pleasing to see some blokes get some time in the middle with Wright (30), Watkins (30) and Wilson (64no) all making good starts. 2 wins form the first 3 games was a pleasing start to the season.

The fourth game of the season saw us head to Macleay Park to take on North Balwyn in our second clash against them in a couple of weeks, this time in the first 2-day game of the season. North Balwyn won the toss and batted on what seemed to be a wicket that might have a little bit in it for the bowlers. We took 4 early wickets, however knew the one we wanted was in and proving a hard man to dismiss – the same story for us against them over the past few years. While they put on a good partnership through the middle of their innings, we were able to restrict their scoring. Once we took the 5th wicket we were able to take regular wickets and bowled them out for 255 in the 80th over of the day. Our bowlers worked tirelessly all day, with Padbury, Nagpal and Watkins all taking 2 wickets. We knew it was going to be a tough chase and partnerships were what were required. We got off to a reasonable start with the bat getting to 73 before losing our second wicket, however we were never on top of the run rate. From that point on we unfortunately could not get any momentum into our innings, losing regular wickets and were bowled out for 184 in the 69th over. Wright (43), Joslin (36) and Nagpal (37) late in the innings worked hard during the chase.

Our round 1 game was washed out, so we were rescheduled to play on Sunday 13th of November. Ashburton won the toss and sent us in, getting a couple of early wickets, before a couple of valuable partnerships. Wright (40) again got off to a good start and Nagpal showed his talent with the bat, making a quick fire 30no towards the end of the innings, allowing us to post a solid total of 8/164. We were on top with the ball early and were able to take regular wickets, which enables us to keep scoreboard pressure on Ashy and in the end bowled them out for 136 in the 37th over. Always good to come away with a win on a Sunday affair!

Our next clash was against Surrey Hills at home and we needed to bounce back after our disappointing 2-day game against North Balwyn. We won the toss and sent Surrey into bat on a grassy Mont Albert wicket. We couldn't get off to a better start with Padbury taking a wicket with the first ball of the day. The momentum continued and we were able to take regular wickets, with Padbury (4/21) and Taylor (3/16) the stand outs with the ball. Watkins also chipped in with 2 wickets of his own. We bowled Surrey out for 90 in the 46th over, meaning we still had 30 overs or thereabouts to bat. We didn't start too well with the bat, losing regular wickets. We were 4/32 and in real strife until Wilson (33) and Adgemis (28) put on a crucial 45 run partnership. Wilson and Guley were able to take us past the total and Hargreaves got some much needed batting practice producing some lusty blows late in the innings to get us some quick runs. We made a total of 8/161 before declaring and having a crack for an unlikely outright victory. Taylor took an early wicket but they dug in with the bat and we pulled the pin when they were 1/62 in the 31st over of their second innings. A good comprehensive victory.

Our last game before the Christmas break was a 2-day affair at home against Donvale. With Captain Joslin overseas on a World Challenge school trip, young gun Padbury would take the reigns. We lost the toss and were sent in to bat – Wright (65) and Padbury put on 49 for the first wicket, helping set up the day. Wilson continued his good form with the bat, making a solid 62no, however it was disappointing no other batsmen could stay with him at the crease. We were bowled out for 211 in the 74th over. This gave us 3 overs at them before the close of play on day 1. Bang, bang, bang and Donvale were 3/1 over night, leaving them a huge task the following week to chase down the total of 211. We continued on with a positive bowling stint on day 2, bowling the visitors out for 116 in the 36th over. Padbury led the way with 3/16 off 10 overs and Taylor chipped in with a couple of wickets. Padbury decided to have a second crack at them but unfortunately after an early wicket, they steadied to end up 4/110 off 27 overs. Taylor again was in the wickets with 2/25 off his 7 overs. Another strong performance going into the break.

We headed out to Zerbes Reserve for a one-day game to kick-start 2017. The wicket was a brand new one and not one person had an idea as to how it would play. We won the toss and batted believing it would not get any better as the day went on. Wrighty unfortunately lost his off-peg first ball of the day, with a ball that jagged back a long way from outside off stump, leaving a few blokes on the sidelines looking on with uncertainty as to how to handle their innings. Guley (30) had great intent opening the batting and continually rotated the strike. Watkins (64) and McClure (48) were able to put on a significant partnership of 73 which gave us a chance to build a solid total of 162. It was going to be hard for East Doncaster to chase if we were to bowl disciplined lines and lengths. Hargreaves was able to take an early wicket but they were able to get hold of us with some positive batting from there on in, passing our total in the 39th over. Jackson was the pick of the bowlers with 4/27 off his 8 overs. Watkins chipped in with a couple also, but it was back to the drawing board for our approach to one- day cricket.

Round 10 was a 2-day game at home verse Ashburton. While having the wood on them over the past few years we knew it was going to be a tough battle. Ashy won the toss and sent us in to bat. Unfortunately we were never able to get any momentum in our innings and build any substantial partnerships. Watkins (42) batted for a long period of time to try and assist in building a total but we were dismissed for a miserly total of 149 in the 73rd over. We knew we had to bowl and field extremely well to keep Ashy below our total. Up stepped Roy Taylor who bowled the house down, taking 7/29 off 17.3 overs and single handedly destroyed Ashburton’s batting innings. We bowled them out for 113 in the 62nd over and claimed a great victory.

The next day on the Sunday we headed up the road to take on Surrey Hills in a one-dayer. Surrey won the toss and sent us in to bat on a wicket that looked like a WACA wicket on a day 7 wicket that had received zero water – cracks everywhere. While losing a few early wickets wasn't ideal, Wilson (50) and McClure (57no) were able to rescue the ship with a great middle order partnership, to help us to a respectable total of 7/178 off 40 overs. We started brilliantly with the ball taking early wickets and continued to take regular wickets throughout the innings, bowling Surrey out for 100. Padbury (4/14 off 6.2 overs) and Watkins (2/18 off 8 overs) were the standouts with the ball. It was a great weekend, coming away with two wins.

Round 12 saw us take on East Doncaster at home in a two-day game. A game we were keen to win and get some revenge for out disappointing loss in the one-dayer first game back after Christmas. East Doncaster won the toss and batted on what looked to be a good Mont Albert wicket. Taylor and Jackson were able to take early wickets to put East Donny on the back foot, but they were able to put some partnerships through the middle of their innings which wasn't ideal. They were able to scrounge out a total of 206 before being bowled out in the 79th over. Jackson (4/37 off 14) and Watkins (3/28 off 17) were the standouts with the ball, while Padbury also chipped in with a couple of wickets. Our batting innings started well, outside the early wicket of Wright, with Padbury (60) and Joslin (53) putting on 88 runs for the second wicket. Wilson (31) and McClure (37no) continued on from there, meaning we were able to comfortably chase down the total of 5/208 in the 79th over. It is never easy chasing targets over 200, so it was extremely pleasing to see at no stage did we panic as a batting group and focussed on building partnerships throughout the innings.

We were forced to back up the next day on the re-scheduled round 3 one-day clash vs Mulgrave. We won the toss and batted on what looked to be a good wicket and unfortunately lost a few early wickets. It wasn't until Watkins (61) and Wilson (40) put on a strong 4th wicket that our innings got under way. We definitely left a few runs out there as Mulgrave’s bowling stocks lacked any depth and all batsmen found ways to get themselves out. 5/179 was the total we finished on after our 40 overs. We got off to a great start with the ball with 2 early poles before Mulgrave put on a couple of decent partnerships. Their two overseas players looked to be cruising and have the total in their grasp, before Padbury and Nagpal snared their wickets, allowing us to roll through their tail, and therefore bowling them out for 156 in the 37th over. Fernandes bowled the house down through the middle part of the innings claiming figures of 4/30 off 7 overs, while Watkins and Padbury took a couple of wickets each. Again, it was a strong team performance where we were able to take our opportunities.

We backed up the next week, travelling out to Mulgrave to take them on in a 2-day game in Round 13. We knew from previous experience that we would expect the unexpected in relation to the wicket and how it would play. We lost the toss and were sent in to bat but knew that the wicketwouldn't be any better on day two. We lost regular wickets from the outset of our innings, with only a couple of partnerships worth noting, before Padbury (29) and Nagpal put on a late order partnership to help give our bowlers something to bowl at. Wilson (56) was the pick of the bats and again held out to deep mid-wicket off a waist high full toss and Joslin (31) also provided some resistance. We were bowled out for 164 in the 61st over, which was an extremely disappointing outcome against an opposition that we should punish. We knew that if we bowled well we could have them reeling overnight and that is exactly what happened, having them 3/33 going into day 2. Day 2 started with Mulgrave putting on a couple of decent partnerships and we were wondering how we were going to get the remaining wickets. Up stepped Travis Baker to the plate, combining with Padbury, to destroy the Mulgrave lower order. Baker bowled brilliantly taking 5/21 off 12 overs, while Padbury took 4/44 off his 21 overs. We managed to bowl Mulgrave out for 150, meaning we won by 14 runs – a little too close for comfort but a win nonetheless.

Our round 14 clash we headed out to Olney to take on St Kevin’s in our final round of the season, knowing it would be likely that we would take them on again the following game in a Semi-Final. We won the toss on what looked to be a very good looking batting wicket and an outfield that was extremely fast. We lost Wrighty early before Padbury (42) and Joslin (33) put on a good first wicket partnership. Wilson (32) and Baker (61) took over throughout the middle order to build the innings towards a desired total. Hargreaves also provided some lusty hitting down the order to make a quick fire 29no to help get the total to 9/247 off the allotted 80 overs. St Kevin’s started their innings well, building some significant partnerships and scoring their runs at a good rate. It wasn't until Baker and Padbury took a couple of vital wickets in successive overs that we felt a little more comfortable. From that point onwards we were able to take regular wickets and ended up bowling them out for 185 in the 70th over. We then looked forward to taking them on again in the Semi Final at home next week.

It was finals time and weren’t the club and the boys playing excited. It had been a number of years since the 1st XI had played in finals and we therefore wanted to make it count. St Kevin’s arrived to Mont Albert brimming with confidence, coming off finals success in the previous season. They won the toss and chose to bat on a pitch that had a bit of grass on it but looked like it would be good to bat on. Jackson made the initial breakthrough in the 8th over when the score was 19 and we were able to take a couple more before the score was 47. Then things dramatically turned, as we were able to take 4/1 in the space of 10 overs. An outstanding bowling performance and partnership between Baker and Watkins. We then ran through the tail, bowling them out for 72 in the 54th over. Watkins was the standout with the ball taking 4/16 off 14.5 and Jackson provided support taking 3/19 off 12 overs. We had enough overs left in the day to make a real dent in the target, if not pass them on day-1. Joslin (31) towards the top of the order built the foundation of the innings before Wilson (50no) and Baker (47no) put the game to bed early on day 2, with the game being called when we were 5/159 in the 46th over. It was a comprehensive performance and we were all confident going into the grand finalagainst North Balwyn, knowing that if we executed and took our opportunities, we would be in it up to our eyeballs.

We trained well leading into the grand final and went in unchanged from the semi-final team. Roy Taylor (injured) and RishabNagpal were both unlucky to miss out on selection. We won the toss at Bulleen and chose to bat, and while we lost two early wickets (Padbury and Joslin), Wright (39) and Watkins (58) put on an effortless 3rd wicket partnership that looked to set up our innings and take the game away from North Balwyn. North Balwyn do what they always do so well and that is continuing to compete. Wrighty fell to an LBW decision in the 30th over and from that point over, we unfortunately were unable to get any momentum back into our innings. Watkins batted brilliantly and was disappointingly run-out for 58 and we were bowled out for 142 in the 62nd over. We just didn't take opportunities that presented themselves throughout the innings and it meant we had to bowl out of our skins and take every chance that came our way if we were to win the game. We were able to take two wickets at the back end of day-1, with Jackson and Watkins grabbing one each. Day-2 was all North Balwyn, as the wicket was flatter and outfield faster. Our bowlers tried their backsides off but they batted well, passing our total of 142 only 2 wickets down. It was a disappointing way to end the season but we had to reflect on the season as a real positive. We are definitely looking to go one better next season!

Kookaburra T20 Competition

The annual ECA T20 competition saw Mont Albert play five matches.

Mont Albert defeated Burwood Uniting Canterbury6/142 to 4/127

Mont Albert defeated Bulleen 6/170 to 5/119

Mont Albert defeated Marcellin 8/112 to 10/87

*Qtr-Final - Mont Albert defeated Deepdene Uniting 9/130 to 9/119

*Semi-Final – Mont Albert lost to Heathmont 10/115 to 9/132

To win all 3 group games and a close, hard fought game in the quarter final was extremely pleasing for the club, especially as we have been poor in this format in the past. It was disappointing letting the semi-final slip when we had it firmly in our grasp. We dropped a number of catches in the field and didn't take some opportunities with the bat. Let’s hope we can take those opportunities next season and win the competition!

There were some other real positives that came from the season 2016/17, which were:

- 2nds won their second flag in succession. - 1sts, 2nds, 3rds and 4ths made the finals. - Junior teams tasted success with some flags. - Junior development at the club is strong and only going to continue to get stronger.

In finalising, as Captain/Coach for the 2016/17season, I want to thank a few people. My job was made a lot easier thanks to the following people: President Peter Knox - who puts in countless hours of work behind the scenes for the club and only has the best interests of the club at heart. He bleeds blue, red and yellow!!

Chairman of Selectors Rick Barker – the amount of time and effort Rick puts into the club, with not only chasing blokes to play late in the week with phone calls and emails, but also manages to play a vital role on the field for the club in the 3rds.

Training Captain Roger – who takes time out of his Tuesdays and Thursdays to ensure all at training get a bat and bowl + helping set up with drinks and the BBQ.

All the gentlemen who help out around the club (I could name many) – whether it be cooking dinners on a Thursday night, helping set up on the weekends, pouring drinks for the players or supporting/encouraging on the weekends – it all is much appreciated and makes the club what it is – a well-respected, strong and revered club.

I look forward to training hard over pre-season and going one step further in the 1st XI next season and continuing to develop all players across the whole club in season 2017/18.

Go the Mont’s.

THE SECOND XI – BACK TO BACK PREMIERS

After winning last year’s C Turf premiership, the newly formed 8 team grades across the competition meant that our ‘promotion’ was essentially only half a grade. Despite this, we faced better opposition, with all teams in the grade being 2nd XIs, and even one first XI team.

Five one day games were scheduled to start the season, and with round 1 called off, our first outing was an away trip to Boronia. Jones (27) got us off to a good start with some aggressive batting, and contributions from Guley (45) and Adgemis (41) allowed us to post a competitive 5/175. In reply, Boronia were all out for 151 with gale force winds making bowling conditions extremely difficult. Orchard (3/35) and Jones (3/26) were the pick of the bowlers with Johnsen chipping in with 2/19.

Round 3 was also washed out, meaning another reserve day was in place and lots of Sunday cricket to come. We travelled to Marcellin for round 4 where pre-game discussions on the merit of the ‘dynamic toss’ and the value of sheep stations had the captain stumped. We posted a good total of 6/179, with Jones (53) continuing his early season form and Adgemis (44no) contributing with some hard hitting late in the innings. In reply, Marcellin never really challenged and batted their overs to finish 9/139. In his first 2nd XI game, Josh Brown bowled brilliantly, taking 5/20 from his 7 overs.

A trip to Mazenod saw another good batting performance with 6/175 on the board courtesy of James Blair-Holt’s 66 at the top of the order. Contributions from Fernandes (28), Bonnett (32) and Brown (28*) gave us a good score to defend. Some aggressive batting from Mazenod and a second wicket stand of more than 100 took the game away from us. Some late wickets to Fernandes (2/21) got us back in the match, but we were passed in the final over with 4 wickets remaining.

Round 6 saw us play Marcellin yet again in our first 2 day fixture for the season. The match held some extra importance with the John O’Loughlin Shield up for grabs. We won the toss and batted, but got off to a shaky start losing 5/56 before Johnsen (57) steadied the ship with support from Galtieri (26), Orchard (35) and Cull (27*) to allow us to reach 207 all out. Marcellin’s aggressive approach paid off at the top of the order, before we pegged them back to 9/153. A final wicket stand of almost 50 set up a thriller, before they were eventually dismissed for 201 with plenty of overs remaining. Cull (5/33) and Thorn (2/23) were the main wicket takers.

The first of our Sunday fixtures was the round 1 make up day where some good bowling restricted Ashburton to 112 all out. The wickets were shared with Minz taking 3/12 and Cull, Thorn and Jones 2 wickets each. In reply, we lost 3/25 before Greedy (25) iced the game with some aggressive stroke play. He had good support from Fernandes (20) and Galtieri (21*) who steered us home.

We lost the toss on a bowler friendly wicket at Kevin Bartlett Reserve and slumped to a disastrous 7/55 against Richmond City. It took some fight from the tail to get us to 157 all out with Cull (68*) sharing in 50 run partnerships with both Orchard (12) and Power (17) late in the innings. Power (6/16) and Cull (4/8) then bowled unchanged to dismiss Richmond City for a miserly 24 from 23 overs. We enforced the follow on and got the outright with Richmond City managing just 66 in their second innings. Orchard took 4/10 from 11 overs and Power claimed another 5/21 to give him the incredible match figures of 11/37 from 18.3 overs and an important 10 points for the team.

The final game before Christmas saw us up against the undefeated Mazenod in a match for top spot. Unfortunately, we did not start well losing 4/19 at the top of the innings. Harvey Jones fought hard to see off the difficult start and then combined with Brown (40) in a magnificent 107 run partnership for the 5th wicket. Jones’ hard work was rewarded with a brilliant maiden century (102) and with the lower order once again chipping in (Orchard 28*), we were able to post a very defendable 7/249. We claimed early wickets on week 2 to have them 4/57. Some good batting from Mazenod got them back in the match and set up a close finish infront of a big crowd. Some missed chances in the field and some late order hitting hurt us and we once again lost in the final over (with only 1 wicket and 1 ball to spare). Jones and Cull claimed 3 wickets each in the disappointing loss.

Extreme heat saw us called off in our first game after Christmas before an away trip to Ashburton. We won the toss and bowled with Power hitting the top of off on the first ball of the day. We took wickets regularly and bowled tightly until tea, before Blair-Holt was introduced into the attack. Late in the innings, he took an incredible 3/4 from 4.4 overs to take the score from 5/62 to 67 all out. We set ourselves to reach the target in the 30 overs before the close of play. Unusually, Devine was involved in a verbal altercation, which spurred him on to finish the day 20*. Adgemis chipped in with a quick fire 24 as we passed their total for the loss of only 3 wickets. Unfortunately, the covers were unable to hold the rain the following week, which denied us another outright opportunity.

The scheduled Sunday match against Richmond City saw us bowl them out for a low total (66 all out) with Power enjoying a day out with the ball (4/12 from 8 overs). A poor start with the stick gave us a scare as we slumped to 5/28 before Brown (27*) and Galtieri (15*) combined to get us home.

We met Hawthorn in round 12 and with a strong bowling line up, we restricted them to 160 all out (Power 4/44, Hargreaves 2/17 and Fernandes 2/29). We lost 1 wicket overnight , but anothercollapseon day 2 left us at 5/56 before Hargreaves showed his class with a well controlled 73* to guide us home. With the side under pressure, he shared in an undefeated 105 run partnership with Johnsen (28*) on a wicket which was difficult to score on.

The second of the reserve days meant we met Bulleen 2 matches in a row, firstly in a one day game at Koonung Park and then back at home for the return fixture. We lost the toss in the one dayer and they adopted a cautious approach to their innings, being bowled out for 91 in the 39th over. Patel was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 4/11 from his 8 overs, while Power was unlucky to finish with only 2 wickets. Jones (32*) and Blair-Holt (43* including 7 fours and a six) made light work of the target, as we passed the total in the 18th over with 9 wickets in hand.

With 7 players unavailable across the first 2 XIs, some changes to the team were necessary for the 2 day match. Bonnett got us off to a good start and combined with Johnsen (36) to get us to tea for the loss of only 1 wicket. We accelerated after tea, with Bonnett going on to make a career best 87. Skandakumar made an aggressive 44, combining with 14 year old Jack Woods (27) who worked the singles and played some beautiful cover drives. Patel finished off with an entertaining 25* including 3 fours and a six. It was pleasing to see a batting plan well executed as we finished with a total of 8/266. Bulleen did not attempt to chase the score the following week, batting 76 overs for 119 all out. The spin twins did the damage with 5 wickets between them (Orchard 3/20 and Patel 2/26) and Thorn took 2/31. Woods completed a good all round performance with 1/8 from his 5 overs.

With a top 2 finish secured, we were keen to continue our recent batting form in the final round against Boronia. We were sent in and crumbled to 5/15 which included a disastrous 4/1. Our middle and lower order once again rallied with Johnsen (36) and Brown (20) leading the recovery. A final wicket partnership of 43 between Cull (26*) and Power (17) allowed us to crawl to 134 and give us something to bowl at. We took 2 wickets overnight to put us back in the match. Week 2 saw Boronia adopt a careful approach to their innings. Power continued his impressive form, taking 4/16 from 19 overs. He was well supported by Johnsen with 3/13 from 10 as we bowled Boronia out for 87 from 58 overs. With some batsmen needing a hit before finals, we batted for 27 of the remaining 40+ overs. Jones made 42 in quick time before Adgemis blasted 103* in only 19 overs before we declared the innings at 2/173.

With the firsts playing at Mont Albert, we played our ‘home’ semi-final at Surrey Hills against Marcellin. We lost the toss, but as he had done all year, Power led the attack with a devastating spell at the start of the innings. Marcellin fell to 4/19 and reached only 99 from 57 overs courtesy of some good striking from their lower order. Power finished with 3/16 from 17 overs with Brown and Nagpal taking 2 wickets each. We lost 2 wickets in the remaining 23 overs to set up what should have been a comfortable run chase the following day. On an increasingly low wicket, we suffered 5 lbw decisions and a run out as we passed their total 7 wickets down. In difficult circumstances, Guley batted with maturity and anchored the innings with a fine 39*.

We met Hawthorn in the grand final after they had defeated top of the table Mazenod in their semi- final. We were once again the beneficiary of a home grand final and were greeted with a magnificent wicket and outfield. After winning the toss, we had no hesitation in batting and knew if we had wickets in the shed, a total of 250+ was in order. Devine and Jones saw off the new ball, getting us to drinks without loss. Jones (37) then combined with Blair-Holt, before being adjudicated lbw on the last ball before tea. Guley (67) joined Blair-Holt after tea and their positive approach allowed us to lift the run rate. Their 122 run partnership was a pleasure to watch and set us up for an assault on the final 10 overs. Johnsen (23*) then joined Blair-Holt, who never looked like getting out. They worked the singles and put away the bad ball before Blair-Holt was run out for a magnificent 97with only an over remaining. We finished our innings on 4/253 in probably our best batting display for the season.

In good batting conditions and on a hot day, we knew early wickets were the key to winning the match. We were able to make early inroads through Cull (2/12), Brown and Johnsen to put some pressure on their middle order. The spinning options of Nagpal (3/12 off 12.3) and Orchard (2/20) then combined to finish off the match with Galtieri doing a fine job behind the stumps. James Blair- Holt deservedly won the man of the match for his magnificent 97 and we celebrated back to back flags for the seconds and an important promotion back to B turf.

Once again, the season was highlighted with many great individual and team performances. Our bowling group led the competition, taking more wickets and conceding less runs than any other team in the competition. Power (32 wickets) led the competition for wickets for the 3rd consecutive year.

Our batting had some magnificent performances with centuries to Jones and Adgemis, Guley’s finals performances (39* and 67) and Blair-Holt’s match winning 97 in the grand final the stand outs. It was pleasing to have contributions throughout the order all season. The middle and lower order consistently stood up when we were in trouble, getting us back into matches which were seemingly slipping away.

Thanks once again to Peter Knox as President, Rick Barker as chairman of selectors and Jack Joslin for their continued support. Thank you to our many volunteers and supporters who allow us to play each week. Congratulations to all the 2nd XI players on a well deserved premiership. I look forward to challenging for another one in B turf next season.

THE THIRD XI

Taking over the captaincy from Dale Greedy after such a fantastic season in 2015-16 was always going to be a challenge but with a settled group of regulars the 3rd XI performed creditably to make the semi finals. Thanks to all the players in the 3s for their effort and support.

Highlights of the season included:

 Michael Minz making 379 runs for the season that made our batting much more settled.  Luke Galtieri’s 100no in round 2 and Dale Greedy’s 119 in round 6  The win over eventual premiers in round 8 was one of the better win the 3rds have managed in recent years recovering from 3/15 to post 200 with Dale Greedy (70) and Michael Minz (67) leading the charge and then defending right into the last over with Heathmont at 8/195 and bowling them out for that score. Tim Noble 3/41 and Ben Galtieri 2/41 got us home.  Tim Noble bowled consistently all season and deserved to win the bowling award, Tim also averaged 73 with the bat and reckons his batting is pretty dynamic, he is stumped if he knows why he bats so low. He was instrumental in a tight win against Hawthorn in round 7, combining with yours truly to make 30 runs for the 10th wicket.  Joel Guley was a fine addition to the team and took some crucial wickets and catches during the season.  Jack Woods also stepped up and by the end of the season was looking more comfortable at senior level with a fine 51 vs Nth Balwyn, his talk in the field reminds some in the team of his father but with a more intelligent edge.  Ben Galtieri and Charlie Thorn bowled tight lines and intelligently, Charlie particularly often bowled too well to take a wicket and Ben showed again he is a finals specialist with 5/15 in the semi final.  The aged Rick Barker is inspiration to many, including himself, he runs around like 45 year old, joins in everything, talks a heap of rubbish but in between makes some runs and gets the odd catch or run out behind the stumps.

Thanks to Jack Joslin and Roger Smith for making training interesting and fun to be part of, it really helps the 3rd XI that most of us are training as it is fun to be there.

Thanks to the committee and Peter Knox for their support.

See you all out there next season.

THE FOURTH XI

Like most XIs, the 4ths struggled with availability throughout the year. Reaching the semi-final was great achievement and was due as much to determination of the team than talent and skill. On a number of occasions throughout the season, the team was able to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, with players standing up at the right time.

The first game against St Kevins was a classic example of a close win which could have gone either way. Batting first we made 158 courtesy of a Josh Brown 80. (Incidentally, that was the one and only game Josh played in the 4ths.) St Kevins required 6 of the final over to win. Joel Guley took one wicket, there were 2 run outs and not a run was scored.

Surrey Hills was another game where we came back after staring defeat in the face. This time it was Jimmy Wright making 32 to see us past their total of 164 after being 7 for 87. Against East Malvern Tooronga, the evergreen Jeff Mollison took 4 for 19 to bowl the opposition out for 146 defending 152. A great result as they were 4 for 101 with time to spare. (It was a 2 day game btw) In the context of the season, these were important games to win, as there were 4 teams vying for the last 2 finals places coming into the final 2 rounds.

While these were good wins, there were some disappointing games as well. Losing to Hawthorn by 20 runs in a 1 day game with 7 wickets in hand.Posting 268 against Deepdene and being passed 2 down. At times we had the ability to fight hard, but others we genuinely struggled to play completive cricket. In most games, there was often a 5 to 10 over period where our bowling or fielding would drop off, or we would lose quick wickets while batting.

There were a number of individual highlights throughout the season, most of them involving Jeff Mollison. The first of course being his 600th game for the club.I have been fortunate to play many games with Molly including 2 ECApremierships (17 years apart) and while the arm is getting a little lower in the bowling action, the drive is still there. His seasons bowling figures were 15 wickets at 7.3, including 5/21 against Donvale. In round 3 against East Malvern Tooronga, he recorded his second century for the club, proving he can also still bat.

Other individual highlights include Gus McLean’s 71 against East Malvern Tooronga, Frosty Miller’s 64 against Deepdene, Wiil Cooper’s 70 no against La Trobe, Ben Chipp’s 60 no in the same game and Chris Forde’s 55 in the semi-final against Hawthorn. Unfortunately, other than Ben Chipp, the others played only a small number of games in the 4ths. (Apparently Gus had to captain the 5ths)

Our bowling was often inconsistent and lacked any real potency, even for G Turf. Ben Chipp won the with 10 wickets at 22, with hauls of 4/34 against Surrey Hills and 3/41 against Mazanod. Dan Bernadone bowled well all season without luck, as did Jordan Dean and Jimmy Wright. Another games milestone achieved this season was Jimmy Wright playing his 200th game. Jimmy is always great to play with and gives 100% every time, both on the field and off it.

It was good to see a number of new players, and some, such as Phil Carruthers, commit to more games this year. Phil enjoyed his cricket immensely and I’m sure will be back for many seasons to come. Phil bowled 9 overs with seasons figures of 1/24 and made 15 runs at 5. Mark Sowden, the 4ths overseas player, also contributed throughout the season.

I would like to thank all those who played in the 4ths this year and special thanks to Rick Barker as Chairman of Selectors. Rick did an amazing job to get 5 teams of the park most weeks under difficult circumstances. Going into next season, the 4ths needs to again become the side to bring the juniors through. As much as I enjoy playing with the dynamic duo of Wayne Harris and Jim Alexander (and I’m stumped how Michael Massey got a few games), the low number of juniors playing in the 4ths is of concern. While Harrison Alexander and Nick Kann played a handful of games, we need to encourage more of the juniors to take the step into senior cricket.

THE FIFTH XI

Cricket is a funny game. The 5ths had a roller coaster of a season with many ups and downs. We were washed out and heated out. We were dismissed for 79 and made a score of over 250. We started the season with a forfeit and a brief conversation about actually withdrawing the side but then finished fifth on the ladder and were a serious finals chance. We lost two games in which we made over 200, but, conversely, defended a number of small totals. If anything could happen it did.

The main challenge we faced this year was selection. Numbers were sometimes a bit light during the season. This season marked only the second time that I can remember that we had to forfeit a game. And once or twice we played with ten and in one game we started with nine players. However, the achievements of the 5ths overall reflect well on the strength of our club. People drew upon their networks and recruited people so that we could field a team but, more importantly, field a competitive team. I would like to thank everybody for trying to recruit players and I would like to thank Rick Barker as Chairman of Selectors for his cool, calm and collected manner on Thursday nights when selection looked grim. He was never stumped by the situation but was instead dynamic and positive.

There were lots of highlights this year, one of them being the involvement of juniors in the team. Joel Guley opened the season with 4/24. Quentin McLean got 5/44. RuhalSulur proved to be useful with the bat playing in the middle order. He had a top score of 31 and in a number of innings he played took a rear-guard role, batting with maturity beyond his 14 years.

Hugh Boyle had figures of 4/12 and the evergreen Luke Pich took 4/32. Chris Forde bowled consistently all season and pinched-hit with flair. Wayne Harris made an excellent cameo in an innings where he hit two sixes in a row off the last two balls to give us the extra ten runs needed to win the game. Tim Rossi and Phil Carrathers made their highest scores for the club in rather desperate circumstances.

We also had a number of father son combinations that played together during the year.

This year a new rule was introduced in the limited over competition that the batsman had to retire at 50. A number of players made fifty, which included Chris Dunning, Allen Burton, Alex Rathbone, Chris Forde, Hugh Boyle and Aaron White.

I would like to thank all of the people who played in the 5ths this year. We had 49 different players. In particular I would like to thank the junior players and the Veterans who played. Without them, we would not have had as good a year as we did and it was exciting to see the U14s improve and have some success. I would like to thank Tim Rossi for all of his help during the year and I wish him all the best in his new job in Canberra. I would also like to thank Richard, Roger, Jack and Peter for all of the work they do on game day. Lastly I would like to thank my wife, Fiona, whose knowledge of and interest in cricket continues to increase despite herself!

VETERANS REPORT

This year Mont Albert had three veterans sides, 1 in the >50’s playing in the Box Hill Reporter competition, and two in the >40’s playing in the Eastern Cricket Association competition. The move from 4 teams last year to three this year, as well as being in more realistic grades, have both helped with numbers, which made the season more enjoyable compared to last year. The improved numbers combined with more realistic grades also improved results on the field, to the extent that all teams participated in Grand Finals with both >40 teams winning.

Golds (>40 ECA Division 3) The Golds started with a win by default in round 1. Round 2 was at Bulleen, where we lost the toss and were inserted on a difficult pitch against an undermanned Bulleen. Joe Spuria scored a quickfire 40 opening in his first game for the club, and Jim Alexander scored a hard fought 30no to get us to a very competitive 7/143 off our 36 overs. Bulleen scored 102 with a couple of excellent run outs contributing, and some excellent bowling, Craig Arbuthnot 1-9 off 5, Nick Hart 2-15 off 4, and Marco Negri (an ex Bulleen player and >50’s regular) taking 3-27 off 5.4. Next we were away to Kew who won the toss, batted, and scored 5/178, Nick Hart 2-22 off 6. Our top order got us off to an excellent start with Joe Spuria scoring a brutal 40no, Tim Norris 35, and Jim Alexander 30. However we fell away and were short at 6/162. Next we had Surrey Hills at home. They got away from us scoring 4/206. We chased well falling just short at 8/197, Dean Kelly scoring 31, Jim Alexander and Brad Woolhouse 40no, and Terry Smit 21no. Round 5 was at home to Mazenod on Mont Albert Reserve. We won the toss, batted first and scored 160 with Jo Spuria scoring 31 and Nick Hart 32. We contained them to 9/138 with the wickets being shared around, best bowling was Nick Arnold with 1-18 off 6. Round 6 was away to Mazenod on the number 1 ground, not the artificial which was great. We won the toss, batted first and scored 7/123 on a green pitch and a really slow outfield, with Tim Norris scoring 38 and Jim Alexander 40no. In reply Mazenod scored 7/123 with again the wickets being shared around. This result guaranteed finals participation, a great result after only one win last year. The final game was away to Bulleen (again!), the result of which would dictate who we play in finals. We batted first, and scored 7/169, a credible score with Tim Norris 34, Phil Avery 35 and Brad Woolhouse 39. Don Williams took 2 early wickets, and ended up with 2-7 off 4, but unfortunately we couldn’t back him up as Bulleen scored 3/170. In a surprise we were playing Kew (the top side) away in the Semi-final, a result we were happy with. Kew won the toss, sent us in, and were vindicated by having us 7/41. However Brad Woolhouse played a captains knock of 40no, backed up by Don Williams scoring 30 batting at 9, to get us to 9/128, a defendable total. We held Kew to 97 to win a memorable Semi with all bowlers bowling well, but Jon Docking 2-10 off 4.3, Don Williams 1-12 off 6, and Craig Arbuthnot 2-13 off 5 the standouts. For the GF we had Surrey Hills away. We won the toss, batted first, and again were in trouble being 6/82 despite 40no from Rick Coenen, and 27 from Jim Alexander. Once more Brad Woolhouse played a captains knock of 39, supported by 21 from Wayne Harris to get us to 8/167. Once more the bowling and fielding was excellent to restrict Surrey to 8/157, Jon Docking taking 2-26 off 6, and Brad Woolhouse in a man of the match performance (in the eyes of everyone except the umpire) taking 3-13 off 6 to go with his 39. First grand final win for the Golds, a very satisfying year, and we also had good fun on and off the field. Batting award was won by Jim Alexander, bowling by Don Williams. Thanks to Brad Woolhouse for captaining, Tim Norris for assisting, and all for participating in an excellent year.

Reds (>40 ECA Division 5) The Reds were in Division 5 after being in Division 1 last year. They started off away v STC South Camberwell in round 1, who won the toss and inserted us. We responded by scoring 8/241 with Chris Dunning scoring 40no, Phil Avery 42no and Andrew Heath 40no. STC scored 197 in reply with DavorStanic 3-38 off 6, and Phil Avery 2-30 off 4.4. Next up we were at home to Burnley CYMS who won the toss and batted first. They never got going scoring 65 all out with Jeff Mollison taking 2-0 off 3, Luke Pich 2-9 off 6 and Aran O’Brien 2-0 off 0.5 standing out. We scored 3/75 in reply to score an easy win. Next we had Donvale at home. Donvale won the toss, batted first scoring 136 all out, DavorStanic 3-12 off 6, Phil Avery 3-16 off 6, Andrew Heath 2-19 off 6 and Mark Dunning 2-17 off 4. In reply we scored 7/142 off 33 with Phil Avery 38 and Jeff Mollison 41no. Round 4 was Burwood away. Burwood won the toss and batted scoring 111 all out with Mark Dunning 2-7 off 3, Andrew Heath 3-15 off 6 and Phil Avery 2-6 off 3. We scored 2/131 off 19 with Aran O’Brien 40no and Aaron White 30no making another comfortable win. Round 5 was away to North Balwyn who won the toss (notice a pattern happening here), and batted scoring 7/167 with Lachie Thompson 3-30 off 6, and Aran O’Brien 2-5 off 3. In a good chase we scored 7/170 off 33 with Allen Burton 41no and Phil Avery 32no. Round 6 was not played due to miscommunication with North Balwyn. Round 7 was away to Burnley CYMS where we won the toss (normal skipper Phil playing in the Golds) and batted first scoring 5/246 with Rob Grumont 40no, Aran O’Brien 42no and DavorStanic 40no. In reply Burnley scored 7/194 with Andrew Heath 3-15 off 6 the standout. So after an undefeated season we were top of the table so faced Donvale at home. Donvale won the toss and inserted us. We scored 7/194 with Chris Dunning 38 and Allen Burton 40no. In reply Donvale lost steady wickets to finish at 9/137. Phil Avery took 2-19 off 4 and Aran O’Brien 3-18 off 6. A good win which earned a home final against STC South Camberwell.STC won the toss (By my count that means Phil didn’t win one all year) and batted. A fine bowling effort restricted them to 86 all out with DavorStanic taking 2-17 off 6, and Andrew Heath taking 4-17 off 6. In reply we made hard work of it being 7/57 with Phil Avery scoring 21, before Jeff Mollison (21no) and Aaron White (17no) saw us home. Once more a flag for the Reds.Much easier being in Div 5 compared to Div 1 last year, but nevertheless we needed to beat what was in front of us. We added some exciting new young talent, the future looks bright for next year.Batting award to Jeff Mollison, bowling to Andrew Heath. Thanks to Chris Dunning for managing the side, Phil Avery for captaining, and to all for participating.

Purples (>50 BHR B Division) This year we dropped a division to play in B division. Round 1 was away to West Ivanhoe United, we won the toss and put them in in gale force winds. They made 8/194, the only multiple wicket taker was Andy Youren with 2-40 off 6. A really solid run chase ensued with Chris Risely, Wayne Hawkins and Tom Siebel all making 40no, and Geoff Simkiss making 30no. A good win to start.Round 2 was Warrandyte at home, they won the toss and batted first making 9/119. Bruce Wilson 2-20 off 6 the stand out bowler. In reply we made 4/128 with Chris Risely making 40no, and Dave Corrigan 25no. Round 3 was East Doncaster away. They won the toss, and batted first making 6/131. Again Bruce Wilson was the stand out bowler taking 4-13 off 6. Our reply was 123 all out as we kept losing wickets through the innings, top score being Geoff Simkiss with 29no. Round 4 was the bye, round 5 Eley Park away. Eley Park won the toss, and batted making 8/122. Marco Negri was the standout taking 4-9 off 6. In reply we made 3/125 with Wayne Hawkins 45no and Tom Siebel 40no the best. Round 6 was away to the Box Hill North Super Kings. We won the toss and batted scoring 156 all out, Michael Spink 36. It never felt like enough, and that proved the case as the opposition made 4/157. The final round was against Croyden Ranges at home. They won the toss and batted scoring 6/206, Andy Youren being the only multiple wicket taker with 2-35 off 6. In reply we made 5/208 off 34 overs with Chris Riseley and Tom Siebel scoring 40no, Dave Corrigan 44no, and Andy Youren bringing us home with 37no.

So that meant we qualified second, and therefore earned a home semi-final against West Ivanhoe United. They won the toss and batted first scoring 143 all out. Best bowling was Marco Negri 2-20 off 4, and Andy Youren 2-17 off 5.3. In reply we got there in the last over 4 down with Wayne Hawkins 40no, Dave Corrigan 24, and Andy Youren (32no) and Henk Van Kruining (26no) bringing us home with an unbeaten 44 for the last wicket. Finally the Grand Final, East Doncaster away.We won the toss and batted. 8/143 didn’t feel like enough, Dave Corrigan playing a captains knock with 41no. ED got there within 30 overs 3 down. Rick Western took 2-20 off 6, but this was a disappointing overall result, however making the Grand Final was a great achievement. Dave Corrigan won the batting award, and Bruce Wilson the bowling. Thanks to Dave Corrigan for captaining and Marco Negri for managing, and all for participating. A very enjoyable and successful season with 2 flags and a losing GF, excellent results from the year. Once more thanks to the captains, and managers and all for being part of the Mont Albert Veterans.

JUNIORS REPORT

Despite not fielding an Under 18 side in 2016/2017, as a club we’re extremely happy to have the younger age groups growing by the year in terms of participation. Our Milo program & T20 Blast program continues to gain momentum & for the 1st time in a number of years we were able to field 2 Under 10 teams. This along with 2 x U12 , 2 x U14 & 1 x U16.

Thank you to all our coaches for your time & effort

Under 10’s - Phil Woods & Brad Woolhouse Under 12’s – Ian Parry & Sean Brett Under 14’s – James Guley& Dan Bonnett Under 16’s – Paul Devine & Peter Guley

And of course the Team Mangers who make the world go around.

Under 10’s – Dani Hedley & Andrew Kaynes Under 12’s – Jane Dixon, Deb Guilmartin& Kelly –Ann Relph Under 14’s – Anita Pearson & Stuart Richardson

On the field, our u10’s from last season showed great improvement , whilst the ‘newbies’ continued to grow & improve as the season progressed. There is certainly some talent amongst this group and we look forward to them progressing through the age groups and onto senior cricket in the years ahead.

We fielded both a 12A & a 12C side. The A team performed admirably in a very tough competition. Again, the improvement was considerable from October- March. The C team also showed some great signs, with a number still eligible for U10’s this was a great season for development and experience for many. Thank you again to Ian, Sean, Deb, Jane& Kelly–Ann for all your work, thank you also to the parent group.

Our 14A team were confident of a strong showing in 2016/2017 after taking out the premiership in the corresponding grade 2 years earlier. Despite some strong performances both as a team and from individuals, a finals berth was missed by a whisker and the boys are looking to next season to redeem themselves. Our 14C team is to be congratulated on their fine season, culminating in a premiership against Deepdene. From hardly winning a game 2 years ago, essentially the same group of boys have turned it around fantastically. Congratulations to all involved with this group over the time. Particularly Dan Bonnett& Stu Richardson. Thanks again to James & Anita for your time with the A’s and of course all our U14 parents.

16A was always going to be a tough gig! 10-11 players maximum was never going to be ideal either, particularly when we lost a couple post Xmas to APS duties. The boys were robbed of a win in round 1 thanks to a week 2 washout and suffered 3 close losses pre the Xmas break. A solid win in the last game before the break & a nice flogging of Canterbury in the final round was a nice way to finish this groups time as junior cricketers at MACC. It’s certainly been a pleasure to be involved from Under 12’s with this group of boys whom are now young men. Huge thanks to Paul Devine for his commitment to the cause from U12’s. Also thank you to Peter Guley whom stepped up in Div’s absence at times after Xmas. An equally big thanks to the parent group, we’re kind of like family that catch up every Friday night in summer for a few hours. Hopefully the boys will push on into senior cricket if school commitments allow.

Finally, a big thanks to Dani Hedley for her commitment to all things MACC in 2016/2017. I doubt we could have achieved what we did without her help & organisational skills throughout the season. Team photo’s and the Christmas party are a small part of what you all saw, many more things were done backstage, thanks again Dani.

Girls Cricket 2016/17

The Mont Albert Girls’ Cricket team competed in the Inner East girls’ cricket competition, which is growing from strength to strength. This is the third year that it has run and, in that time, it has grown from five teams with one age group to twenty-eight teams with three age groups.

This year Mont Albert fielded a team in the top division, the U17s. There is some exciting talent among the girls playing in the competition. The U17s were runners up in the Grand Final, which was not decided until the second last ball of the game.

This year the 13 girls in the Mont Albert team were coached by Katie Mazzochi, who has done an excellent job. The fielding, batting and bowling skills of the girls kept developing under Katie’s tutelage. I would like to thank the parents for their support and help during the season. In particular, I would like to single out Lynda Schade for her help during the season. She was a great support to me, Katie and the girls. I would like to thank Katie for being the coach for the season. It has been a lot of fun working with her and it has been very rewarding to see the improvement of the girls over the season. I would like to thank Anna McLean for serving as captain, reliably contacting girls and determining their availability. I would like to thank Peter Knox and the Mont Albert Committee for the behind-the- scenes support that they have offered during the season.

Next year looks to be an exciting year for girls’ cricket at Mont Albert. There is the hope of developing an open age women’s team to compete in the Community League. And we need to consider the challenge of starting a second team in the lower divisions to ensure that we remain viable in girls’ cricket.
