PRESIDENT’S REPORT

The season started in a great manner with 85 people attending the AGM in July – the largest attendance ever. With Charlie Rumbelow (Secretary) and Steve Weinmann (Treasurer) retiring, Amy Agnew, who has lads playing for the Club and Gary Rennie (former and Port Adelaide player and Accountant) stepped up to fill the roles. We then filled the Board to capacity for the first time since moving our headquarters to Henley.

When looking at the number of Board Members (see Directory of Officials) it may appear a little unwieldy. However nothing could be further from the truth. It is a young, vibrant and diligent group of people who have put their shoulder to the wheel to ensure that the oldest continuously operating cricket Club in continues in its rightful place – as an independent entity operating continuously in 1 st Grade and those other Grades in which it wishes to or is compelled to field teams.

The Club is in a particularly healthy state. Last season we ended with the best financial position in our history – we have already surpassed that figure this season. The Men’s 1 st Grade side is undefeated and all other teams are very competitive. We put 15 teams onto the field each weekend, more than any other SACA Club (and possibly in South Australia). The Club has as many if not more volunteers than any other Club (see Directory of Officials) and an abundance of qualified Coaches. It is very re- assuring to watch the Under 14s enjoying their matches at the lovely tree lined Fulham North Primary School Oval and also see 4-5 parents in the kitchen organising Afternoon Tea and telling apocryphal stories of their youth. Equalling appealing is to attend Under 11 and Under 13 training on Fridays and watch 40 enthusiastic hopefuls enjoying themselves amid the aroma of a sausage sizzle capably cooked by Peter Hill and supervised by Tracey Croft.

The Club is continuing discussions with the Port Adelaide Cricket Club. However, both Clubs have informed the SACA that neither Club wishes to merge as there have been quite a number of barriers to the formation of a joint enterprise, a major one being geography. From our discussions we have

6 | P a g e westerneagles.com found a logical way to eliminate the bye from Premier Grade cricket. Both the PACC and WTDCC see the solution to the Premier Men’s Grades bye is to create a 14 th Club at Mt. Barker in the next 4-5 years. A proposal had been forwarded to the SACA CEO Keith Bradshaw for consideration by the SACA Board of Management.

At the time of writing the Men’s 1 st Grade team is enjoying a start to the season with a success rate better than in recent years as it is undefeated in all three forms of the game. It won the right to a home semi-final in the T20 competition. This will be played at Henley Oval on Tuesday 10 th January at 5.20 p.m. We would like as many people as possible to attend, senior and junior players and supporters, so that we have a large crowd present. The team has now played 9 matches for 7 wins and 2 draws, in each of which West Torrens was in a strong position.

Unfortunately the Club has lost the services of 1 st Grade opener Eric Laubscher after the match against East Torrens in Round 4. Eric and his partner have transferred to Melbourne due to employment opportunities. Eric was a highly talented young ‘leggie’ for Southern Districts playing key roles in various South Australian Under age teams. However he was enticed by the then Coach, Grant Wyman, to West Torrens at the beginning of the 2009-10 season to improve his batting and made his Eagles debut against Prospect at Park 25 #2 in October 2009.

Eric played 43 1st Grade matches and scored 947 runs @ 20.59 with a top score of 89 v. Southern Districts at Bice Oval in Round 1 of the 2010-11 season.. Over all Grades he amassed 2264 runs @ 26.02 and took 27 @ 29.96. Eric also hit three centuries in the ‘Twos’ 134 v. Glenelg at Park 25 #1 in January 2010 114 v. Tea Tree Gully at Henley Oval in February 2010 104 n.o. v. Sturt at Henley Oval in January 2012

Eric thought that he would finish his cricket career with the Eagles but work commitments became a priority. He is reluctant to leave Henley Oval because of the culture of the Club. His reasons - “West Torrens is a Club, not just a group of individuals”.

7 | P a g e westerneagles.com

A great loss for the Women’s 1 st Grade has been allrounder Lucy Williams (see Player Profile). Lucy, a career journalist, has been employed by the SACA for a number of years but prior to the season commencing won a position with in Melbourne. Further losses have been incurred when key strike bowler Ashley Eyles qualified as a Security Guard and works most weekends. Fringe Scorpions player 20 year old Ainslee Knight also decided to retire from the game to try an alternative summer sport.

We are again indebted to all of our subscribing Members whose contributions will enable the Club to continue to function smoothly. Your support is invaluable. Much of the income from Non-playing Membership is directed towards our Juniors as the Club has always placed a strong emphasis on Development. Our Junior Development and Talent Identification program is widely acknowledged as the leader in its field in South Australia. We have 4 boys teams in SACA competitions on Saturday afternoons, a further 4 in the WSJCS on Sunday morning and teams in the BankSA Shield, Ray Sutton Shield and U12 Statewide Shield. In addition our Women’s 2 nd Grade is comprised mostly of Under 14 girls under the guidance of former Test batter Caroline Ward as .

Furthermore there are the Young Eagles Talent Academies for Primary school boys and girls where we are fortunate enough to have former international and state players Lauren Ebsary, Eric Freeman and David Mundy playing leading roles with back up from Jess Joseph (1 st Grade captain) and myself. In addition Brenton and Tom Woolford and Leigh Drennan conduct a year round Academy for any Juniors who wish to have extra tuition.

This season the Blue and Gold /Golden Eagle Members Lunch will again be held at the Glenelg Football Club. However we are trying a new concept. It won’t be during a Sheffield Shield match but during the Club’s 1 st Grade match against Glenelg on Saturday 18 th February. Please see the separate notice.

8 | P a g e westerneagles.com

We have a young and vigorous Social and Events Committee (see Directory of Officials) in operation. They conducted a very successful and immensely enjoyable Buffet Dinner evening at the Greyhounds at Angle Park. Almost $2000 was raised.

Kent Sendy has taken over the role of Sponsorship Director and has done a remarkable job and has been ably assisted by Julie Brown and Alan Hutton. We now have 40 major sponsors in the various categories and 39 Player sponsors. These businesses have been of great assistance to us so I implore you to please use their products and services. CHECK THIS NEWSLETTER and all of your fortnightly newsletters for their advertisements.

Unfortunately we have not been able to use the Clubrooms since October 24 th due to major renovations which should have been completed in the winter. The builder has run into a number of unforeseen problems and we may not be back in until February. Hopefully the new Clubrooms will be worth the inconvenience suffered. Our Platinum Sponsor the Grange Hotel has been of great assistance and we have been able to have Players’ Teas, Presentations and meeting on their premises. Some recent Junior Presentations and our Christmas Bar-B-Q will be held at the Woodville Rugby Club on Saturday 17 th December at Gleneagles Reserve where our U16s play.

Best wishes for a very Happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year.

Denis Brien (aka Rocka) President

STAN the STATISTICIAN

Stan the Statistician from Semaphore South says:

Callum Ferguson became the 445 th player to don the Australian ‘Baggy Green’ Cap when he debuted against South Africa in Hobart on November 12th. He became the ninth player to do so while playing for West Torrens. The others and their Tests debuts were Arthur (‘Affie’) Harwood Jarvis – v. England at the MCG 1 st January 1885 John Denis Alophonsus O’Connor – v. England at Adelaide Oval January 1908 Bruce Dooland – v. England at the MCG January 1947 Ronald Arthur Hamence – v. England at the SCG February 1947 Graeme Blake Hole – v. England at the MCG January 1951 (while with East Torrens – came to West Torrens next season) David William Hookes – v. England at the MCG March 1977 (Centenary Test) Ian Michael Chappell – v. Pakistan at the MCG December 1964 (while with Glenelg – came to West Torrens after the World Series Cricket split was overcome.) Peter George – v. India at Bangalore October 2010

13 | P a g e westerneagles.com

Other Test players to play with West Torrens were: Mervyn George Waite (Australia - went to Glenelg due to residential By-law restrictions) Jeffery John Crowe (after he returned home to New Zealand) Gladstone Cleophas Small (after he returned home to England) Jason Gallian (qualified for England due his father’s birthright) Warrick Darling (Australia – prior to transferring from Salisbury due to residential By-laws) Matthew Thomas Gray Elliott (Australia - while playing for Victoria before coming to S.A.) Daniel James Cullen (Australia - while playing with Adelaide prior to transferring to WT) Colin Munro – (after he returned home to New Zealand)

Callum Ferguson also played his 100 th First class match in the season’s first Sheffield Shield match v. Western Australia at the WACA. His 101 was his 15 th First class ‘ton” and followed his 154 v. a Cricket Australia XI at Drummoyne Oval in the Matador Cup. This was his 6 th List A (One Day) century and he has now played 141 List A matches (One Dayers).

Kris Britt, Lauren Ebsary, Tunde Juhasz, Andrea McCauley and Caroline Ward all played for Australia but prior to West Torrens having women’s teams. They transferred later. Caroline now captains the West Torrens 2 nd Grade team.

In Round One of the Under 14 Reds competition two of our Yorke Peninsula boys Fraser Agnew (102) and Dylan Branford (49) created a new 2 nd partnership of 148. It bettered the previous record of 144 by Brad Mehaffey and Corey Knight v. Glenelg at Henley P.S. in March 2002. It also surpassed the best in the White competition of 147 by Liam Dorward (67) and Harry Sibley (49) v. Southern Districts at O’Sullivan’s Beach Recreation Ground #2, in October 2011. Fraser hails from Curramulka and Dylan from Wallaroo.

Kelvin Smith scored a brilliant 210 for South Australia against the A.C.T. in the Futures League (2 nd XI). He opened the batting and wasn’t dismissed until the sixth wicket and the score reached 455. His place at the wicket was taken by Daniel Drew who peeled off a sound 55 in his first senior game for the Redbacks.

14 | P a g e westerneagles.com

Brooke Harris played her first match for the Scorpions against Tasmania at Allan Border Field in Brisbane. She scored 6 at #10 and had 13 scored from her three overs. Brooke is the first Young Eagles squad member to play top grade senior cricket for South Australia.

Former A Grader, Club Coach, Life Member and Gold Coast resident Brian (Banga) Flaherty has just created an very enviable milestone in golf – a goal that very few golfers achieve. He has broken his age in a round of golf. In the last week of October ‘Banga’ had an 81 ‘off the stick’ and had just turned 82 (September). He joins fellow 1961-62 A Grade Premiership player and Octogenarian Jack Carr who had an 85 at the age of 86 at Portsea, Victoria last year.

First Grade debuts So far this season there have been two debuts in each of the Men’s and Women’s 1 st Grades. Two First class players suited up for the Men 537. Kane Richardson and 538. Dominic Bess v. Adelaide at Glandore Oval and two 14 year olds for the Women 67. Jessica Cufone and 68. Emily Hinze v. Port Adelaide at Henley Oval.

Don’t hassle 13 year old Lucy Meyers , a key allrounder in the Women’s 2 nd Grade, when there is a rifle around. She is no slouch with a gun. In early November Lucy won the Junior rifle event at the Balaclava Rifle Club.

Braedon Renshaw produced the Club’s best ever performance in a T20 match when he took 5/8 (4 overs) v. Southern Districts at Henley Oval on November 22 nd . Ben Williams chipped in with a very useful 4/14 (4 overs). Previous best were - Tom Derham 5/29 v. Woodville at Woodville Oval, December 2011 and Dan Cullen 4/26 v. Sturt at Henley Oval, November 2011. The bowlers were very capably assisted by Leigh Drennan with 5 catches behind the ‘sticks’ which is the best return by a keeper in T20s.

Former Eagle Colin Munro is currently in Australia with the New Zealand ODI team. Colin scored an impressive 49 (59 b.) in the first ODI at the SCG. He made his A Grade debut with the Eagles v. Prospect at Park 25 #2 in October 2009 (probably the only A Grade match to be played on that ground) along with Eric Laubscher and Josh Fidler . He has now played 15 ODIs and one Test match.

Callum Agnew performed an outstanding feat for a Leg spinner in the Under 16 Country Cup for Yorke Peninsula. Against the Invitational XI he took 5/4 from his 10 overs which included 6 maidens. Callum is one of our promising 3 rd Grade players.

Stan (the Stato from Semmy South) emailed ‘the Pres’ to say that he was privileged to witness two young spinners bowl 20 overs in tandem in an Under 14 White match recently. 14 y.o Tyler Siebum (RAOS) and 10 y.o. Charlie Edmunds (RALS) bowled 25 overs between them to take 4 wickets for less than 50 runs. The way to develop young spinners is plenty of bowling. Well done to all of those responsible.

[Stan constantly bombards us with pedantic emails of his trivial pursuits. He is apparently in constant contact with the late David Hookes which accounts for his pedantry. Ed.]

Milo In2Cricket

We had 47 participants at Milo In2Cricket on Saturday November 6 th and 52 on Saturday 20th. Our previous highest attendances were 39 the previous week, and 38 on week 4 last season. We now have 58 children registered.

Our 4 coaches – Blair Wickham (head coach), Liam Dorward, Adam Dorward and Jordy Capel - have done a magnificent job over the last two weeks. Thomas Brown has also been helping the coaches, and doing a great job. Several parents have approached me and passed on their congratulations on the professional manner in which the clinic is run. I’ve also had some enquiries about our underage teams, and it’s disappointing that I can’t be too definite about the future, given SACA’s current campaign to have us removed from the U11 and U13 comps.

16 | P a g e westerneagles.com

Any rate, it is all going well. I had reservations about being able to handle such a big group, but the coaches under Blair’s leadership, have made it a breeze.

And thanks to Julianne for helping me out these first two weeks – it would have been a nightmare trying to do it by myself (so many packs!!). And it’s great that Julie Brown will fill in for me on 26 Nov.

1st Grade Women The women’s first grade hasn’t had the start to the season we were hoping for, with three matches rained out and in the games we have played we are yet to get a win on the board. Losing a good handful of our senior players at the end of last season our current side is looking quite young with only four of the girls over the age of eighteen. Despite the position on the ladder, the girls’ efforts have been admirable making the opposition earn their win, and taking each game to the last few overs of the match.

Taking on the role of batting # 3, 17 year old Ellie Falconer has had a great start of the season scoring 41 and 68 in the first two games respectively as well as backing that up with consistent performances with the ball. Ebonie Smith’s off spin has been an added bonus in our bowling attack along with 14 year olds, Emily Hinze who made her debut along with Jess Cufone, at the start of the season.

Others of the navy and gold the eagle girls have been doing great things. 18 y.o Brooke Harris made her debut for the Scorpions and Lauren Ebsary has made her way west to play for the Perth Scorchers in the upcoming WBBL season, while Caitlin Edmunds, Ellie Falconer and Tait Mackrill all represented South Australia in the recent U18 championships in Hobart.

Overall the women’s squad is as large in numbers as it has ever been, with more and more and more young girls are stepping up from the Young Eagles academy into the Second grade. Our drawback is youth and inexperience. However this will soon turn into an extremely positive asset and augurs well for the future. As a First grade side we will be working on building defendable totals with the bat, which will hopefully see us to our first win in the New Year.

2nd Grade Men

As with all grades so far, it has been very stop start for the Second grade, with a combination of an early bye and inclement weather wreaking havoc on the opening rounds. Only two of four games have been completed, with a narrow, last ball, 4 run loss in our opening one dayer against Prospect and a hard fought and ultimately convincing victory in round 4 against defending premiers Adelaide University. In addition, we have been in 2 convincing positions in games that have ultimately been abandoned- posting 6/311 off 90 against Adelaide and bowling East Torrens out for 222 on a typically flat Henley wicket.

Despite this, there have been several positives to take from the opening few rounds. There has been marked improvement on the team’s ability to occupy the crease that has seen us post over 300 and bat the full day in both two day matches in which we have batted, something which we failed to achieve last season. One particular feature has been the form of the top order, with their occupation of the crease in the first session regularly providing a solid platform consistently for the rest of the team. The highlight was undoubtedly Dylan Clarke’s stylish 114 in round 4- an innings of great substance and maturity.

Bowling and fielding has also been of a good standard, with wickets often being shared and bowling partnerships of the high quality. The focus has been consistency and all bowlers have made themselves difficult to score off, whilst backed up by some excellent pieces of individual brilliance in the field. The challenge now is to maintain these high standards and begin to put wins on the board to validate our good early season form and stay in touch with the top 4.

Nick Maegraith Captain.

P.S. The outstanding piece of bowling thus far has been Nick’s 5/23 (16.3 overs) against East Torrens when he turned the innings with his left arm orthodox spinners. Ed.

2nd Grade Women

The women’s 2 nd grade team is very different from last season, with several new young players. Most of the team are aged between 10 and 14 and it’s great to have so many youngsters in the team. We are looking forward to the players developing as the season progresses.

So far we had been scheduled to play eight matches of our T20 competition but five of these matches have been abandoned (four due to rain) and the other a forfeit. So we have played three T20 matches with two wins and one narrow loss. We have also played one 40 over match which was a narrow win.

Most of the players bowl so we have shared the bowling around and worked on improving consistency and reducing the number of wides. The batting is showing good potential. It has been difficult to get batting time for all players but the shift to 40 over matches after Xmas should provide more opportunities.

Caroline Ward Captain

3rd Grade Men

Although the season hasn’t gone to plan the way we would’ve liked so far in the Third Grade, there has been some real positive signs in the games played so far. The most exciting thing has been the young boys who have debuted in senior cricket within this grade. These include Callum Agnew, Harry Russell, Erik Carrington, Lachie Pointon and Alex Hutton. Ash Clark and Harry Clark- Burnham have also made their debuts for the club, coming from England and Queensland respectively. We wish all of these boys the very best for the many years they have ahead in representing West Torrens District Cricket Club and above. After four games, the third grade are sitting in 12 th spot on the ladder.

20 | P a g e westerneagles.com

Some outstanding player efforts from the season so far have included: Jarrad Hoskin scoring 67*- Round 1 vs Prospect Ben Fulton taking 3/67 – Round 3 vs Adelaide Bradley Cocks snaring 3/73 – Round 3 vs Adelaide Simon Krieg claiming 5/35 – Round 4 vs Adelaide Uni Josh Richman grabbing 3/39 – Round 4 vs Adelaide Uni

Other notable efforts off include: Harry Russell’s fielding. The energy he provides is outstanding for a bloke playing his first year of Senior Cricket. If you ask any boys who played Third grade against Adelaide Uni in Round 4, they would say he has taken the catch of the year already. A stunning one handed effort diving to this right at full stretch to dismiss a Uni batsman who looked set on winning the game for them; Harry’s catch, although we didn’t get the points, kept us in the contest.

Erik Carrington also gets a mention for a gusty 29* in the Round 5 clash versus East Torrens. With wickets consistently falling around him, Erik dug in and showed the rest of the side how to bat when things aren’t going your way. Erik has been the wicket-keeper in all games for the third grade so far and has done an fantastic job behind the stumps; his best performance being against Adelaide in Round 3, when he took three catches. Certainly a challenging year to date for the Third grade, but I personally have really enjoyed having the captaincy role. Many of the boys have assisted me in the role and I can’t thank enough for that. I’m sure that the Third grade isn’t too far away from getting a win on the board and when that does come, hopefully we can get on a roll.

Round 1 saw West Torren’s 4 th Grade come up against Prospect in a 1-dayer. Opener Alex Hutton scored a well-deserved 42, while Alex Hughes (49) helped us reach 9/224. The only sour note of the

21 | P a g e westerneagles.com innings was the knee injury to Samir Sultan who is due back mid-season. Our bowling was solid with Daniel Joseph and former Torrens junior Scott Newman (2 wickets) the standouts. Unfortunately Prospect chased down the total with 6 balls to spare.

A two day game against Adelaide saw the debut of 7 senior Torrens enthusiasts! Jordy Capel (43), Blair Wickham (33) and Sam Little (26) saw us finish on 172. After our innings, one of the debutants summed up lower grade cricket perfectly “not getting out is easy, scoring runs is hard though”. Sam Little removed one of their openers to a blinding catch by Oliver Van der Linden in his first ever game of cricket to have the visitors 1/17 overnight. The game was washed out the following week.

The return of Tom Lewis and Josh Foulis had the Torrens faithful excited for this game. With the first ball of our game against Uni due to be bowled at 11:00am, the boys were quietly confident of a win with no opposition at the ground at 10:30am. After checking with the umpires we realised we were at the wrong ground. A quick drive down the road, a toss of the coin and before you know it we had sent Uni in to bat. Jack Gaffney and Brayden Marchioro both picked up 2 wickets while Jordy Capel got 3/31. Blair Wickham (74) and Jordy Capel (31) batted extremely well and at one stage we were 6/194. The tail didn’t wag and we got bowled out for 205. Close but no cigar.

Round 5 was a Saturday/Sunday fixture. We bowled East Torrens out for 100 with the wickets all shared around. Sitting at 6/65 overnight and Brandyn Galletti on 27n.o we were robbed of a victory by another washout. With scores over 200 in both our losing games, the Fourth grade is not far off the mark and should start a steady climb up the ladder during the season.

Round 1 - The 16 Reds season started with a 2 day game at Southern District on hard wicket an average batting effort saw us bowled out for 74 with Southern passing our total on the first day posting 132. Second week had Southern’s declare and put us in. Second dig West Torrens posted 111, We had Southern 4/56 when they passed total - Much better effort on second day which saw a good effort in the field and arguably outplay the opposition.

Round 2 - One day game at Gleneagles v Glenelg. We batted first posted 10/132 with only highlight a quick 40 from Leighton Hann. Glenelg passed total with 2 overs spare. A good effort in the field – just not quite enough runs.

Round 3 – 2 day game at Gleneagles v Prospect. We won the toss and put Prospect in to see them post 7/252. Prospect had the benefit of some umpiring decisions with 2 run outs not going our way and if not for a couple of drops probably would have seen us bowl them out for less than 200. Overall a good effort again in the field because the boys fielded well and were up and about until the last ball. B. Davies 3/33 L. Hann 3/36 We were confident of chasing the total but unfortunately second day was rained out.

Round 4 – One day v Kensington at Marryatville High. West Torrens batted first and posted 10/70. Kensington had a strong side this week as their seniors had a bye and they dropped some boys that have been regular senior players. Kensington then put us to the sword finishing 8/206. Ryan Nikoleaff 21 and 3/20.

The 16 Reds season hasn’t quite started as hoped but there are some good signs that success is coming. The boys are positive, there is great team morale and with some college boys now available, the next edition of Eagle Eye will make much better reading in regards to this team.

Special thanks to parents of Ben Davies, Leighton Hann, Luke James and Aiden Turner who travel every week from country - great effort and tremendous having the boys in the team.

The first half of the season was filled with some ups and downs for the boys. The first two rounds saw the boys go two from two with wins against Southern’s and Glenelg. Ryan Nikoleaff batted extremely well in both wins making 57* in round 1 and 38 in round 2 before going up into the reds. Other handy contributions in the first 2 round came from Jared Adamson and Lewis Sharland. Wickets were shared around with multiple wicket takers in both games.

We played Prospect in a two dayer in round 3 at Adelaide High. Prospect won the toss and posted a big total (329). All the bowlers toiled hard but couldn’t stop the runs flowing. Lewis Sharland and Riley Williams both took two wickets for the day. Our turn to bat came next week, we got off to a good start with U14s player Luke Terry (16) stepping up to open the batting alongside Ben Cheesman (22). Coby Grindlay made an excellent 53, while Lewis Sharland (29) and Josh Joseph (26) also chipped in.

Round 4, we lost the toss again and Kensington batted first. They made 6/191 with all the wickets shared around once again and debutant Cameron Wood getting his first wicket for West Torrens. With Kensington bowlers hitting their line and length they were able to bowl West Torrens out for 48, with no scores above 10. A disappointing result for all but hopefully onwards and upwards from here.

We are currently in the middle of round 5 against East Torrens. We made 249, Ben Cheesman (55), Lewis Sharland (55) and Sam Chambers (47) all posting very good scores. In a good position to get our third win of the season.

The team had a solid start to the year sitting 4th with a 3-1 record. Great to see 3 children from the YP Country Zone – Fergus Agnew, Dylan Branford and James Reuther, adding depth to our team and the boys have blended really well with the city children despite not being able to train. Game one was always going to be a bonding session with the boys not knowing each other along with their individual strengths and weaknesses so after winning the toss we decided to bowl to help the children get to know each other and provide encouragement in a fielding environment. Despite dropping 7 catches we still managed to get Southern Districts out for 155 with Durant, Zunic ,Hodder-Trenwith and Marshall all taking 2 wickets for less than 25. We then batted for a few overs on day one and after being 1/6 overnight proceeded to make 3/276 the next week for a comfortable win. Highlights were Fraser Agnew making 102 off 149 balls ably supported by Nathan Marshall with 52 n.o. off 36 balls, Dylan Branford 49 off 140 and James Reuther 43 n.o. off 46. I understand the 1 st Wicket Partnership of 148 between Agnew and Branford to be an U14 reds record.

Game 2 also saw another solid batting display making 9/163 (Ned Maguire 43) and getting Glenelg out for 138 (Reuther 3/12).

Game 3 was a great highlight, very exciting for players and parents chasing Prospect’s 6/235 declared and after being 1/4 overnight a MOM display by Dylan Branford with 90 runs from 185 balls, taking 3/18 along with a catch and run out saw us make 9/246. Other highlights were James Reuther again making a solid 45 and the last 5 batsmen showing outstanding determination to all score over 10 individually and be in match winning partnerships which got the team across the line chasing a really big U14 score. Don’t think Prospect will ever declare again!!, the 3 extra overs changed the game.

Game 4 – all out 88 v Kensington, not a good day for decision making in many areas of batting but the boys will learn from this. Great bowling from Lachlan Hodder-Trenwith, Jared Zunic, Bailey Durant and James Reuther kept us in the game for a while but hard to defend such a low score. Agnew with 3 very good catches was a highlight. Onwards and upwards for the rest of the season with a great

So far this year the U14W have shown glimpses of the good team they are capable of. So far we sit with 2 wins and 2 losses, the inconsistent performances can be put down to the age of the team with the majority of the team being 12 y.o. and under, with one 10 y.o. playing all season. The team is coming together nicely and are being brilliantly lead by captain Jaxon Dell'oro. With a bit more consistency being shown in the second half of the season I expect us to be pushing for the finals.

Round 1 v Southern Districts. Lost by 3 runs, great effort to bowl SD out for 79, best bowling Heath Nickolaff 2/8. Unfortunately we came up short with some contentious umpiring decisions going against us, being 76 all out

Round 2 v Glenelg. Won by 1 run, WT posted 117-9 thanks mainly to a great knock by Jaxon Dell'oro of 55. We then bowled Glenelg out for 116,leggie Max Parsons taking 4/10 and the other wickets being shared. The final wicket being a direct hit run out from Luca Paolo as Glenelg went for the single that would have brought the scores level.

Round 3 v Prospect Lost by 77runs. Several dropped catches and missed run out chances enabled Prospect to reach 190-7, best bowling from Tommy Nattrass 2/32 and Charlie Edmunds 2/35. Batting second we could only muster 113 despite 30 from Thomas Brown.

Round 4 v Kensington. Won by 4 wickets. Excellent fielding effort to keep Kensi down to 111-4 from their 40 overs. Despite the loss of a couple of early wickets, a brilliant partnership between Harry Cook 42 and Lachie Hoy 25 took us a long way to their total. A late flurry of wickets but Luke Edmonds and Thomas Brown showing maturity beyond their years saw us over the line.

All things considered, a very promising start to the season but there is much room for improvement. A great set of boys who are all wanting to improve their game and who are working hard to do this both on and off the field.

Ray Sutton Shield

Unfortunately for everyone from our club who was involved in the Ray Sutton Tournament this season, it was a case of one minor slip up costing us a chance to play in the Grand Final. Due to the terrible weather, the first and last minor round games of the competition were abandoned which meant that if we were going to make the final we would not be able to lose a game.

We started off well against Southern Districts passing the required total of 114 for the loss of only two wickets. However, history decided to repeat itself as we came unstuck against Woodville for the second year in a row. After having Woodville 6/37 we allowed their total to climb to 128 by the end of their innings (30 sundries didn’t do us any favours). After making a strong start and being 1/52 off ten overs, we collapsed and despite some big hitting towards the end of the innings we fell an agonising 4 runs short. However, we applied ourselves and showed a much more improved effort in our third and final game against Adelaide when we were able to chase down 129 with five over’s remaining and six wickets in hand.

To all families (especially ones that travelled from the country each and every week) we understand that level of commitment every Sunday can be extremely difficult but you all did it with a minimal amount of fuss which made our job much easier. To Greg Hawke, you have been a significant help for the past two seasons in the Ray Sutton. Without you there is no possible way we would have been able to organise and run the competition the way Darren Joseph and I wanted to as coaches. You made our lives so much easier on Sundays that we were allowed to focus on the things we wanted to rather than the annoying duties. The overall improvement of the group has been outstanding since the very first trial and as coaches we can no thank the kids enough for putting in effort and listening to us. We believe that we have been able to teach a number of skills to the children which we hope they have been able to take on board and keep with them for their future playing careers at the Eagles.

After four rounds the U13 Reds sit second on the ladder with 3 wins and a loss. The loss occurred in the rain-reduced season opener against top-placed Fulham when we rested our four Ray Sutton Shield players. Of the 10 players who took the field that day, only one was a "top age" U13, with several still qualifying for U11s. The boys acquitted themselves well to bat out the overs, but Fulham's total was too much to chase down. Since that week there have been comprehensive wins against Woodville South, Woodville Rechabites, and Grange Navy.

As the results suggest, the boys have played very well as a team. Each week at least one player has stepped up with either bat or ball, and opposition spectators have commented on the quality of our fielding and professionalism of the boys. Perhaps the calling and running between wickets can improve a little, but other aspects of the game have been very strong.

As mentioned it has been a great team effort this year. With the ball, Charlie Croft-Speake, Nathan Marshall, Harry Cook and Nick Boeyen have all taken three wickets in an innings. Sammy Turner and Jack Hawke have shown their all-round abilities, taking two wicket hauls and top scoring in different matches. Our batting has been pleasing, with the boys losing only 22 wickets across the four matches and batting out the full allottment of overs on each occasion. Nathan Marshall (twice), Luca Paolo, Charlie Edmunds, Thomas Brown and Sammy Turner have all made scores in the 20s, while Jack Hawke's quick-fire 39 in Round 4 has been our highest individual score to date.

After such a strong start, the challenge is to keep this form going through the remainder of the season and look to earn our first finals birth.

West Torrens Under 13 White have had an encouraging start to the year in the first 4 rounds. Despite some inclement weather the young lads have played some solid cricket and have shown encouraging signs under coach Darren Joseph. Some players still eligible for under 11’s, a couple of our lads are still 9 years of age.

The team currently sits 8 th on the ladder with a loss to Grange in Round 1, followed by a bye and then a close encounter with West Torrens Yellow winning by 2 runs in the final over. Port Districts made a formidable 170 in Round 4, while our lads were 4/70 before rain stopped play.

There have been some excellent individual performances in all games thus far. Jack Baum made 8 and took 2/17 against Grange. Ryan Paul 29 not out and 2/7 with Jack Cook 23 and 2/15 against West Torrens Yellow and Ryan Paul 11 not out and Sascha Lanzoni taking a classy wicket against Port Districts.

The fielding has been good with two run outs occurring last weekend against Port Districts.

The young men in WT White are continually learning and improving each week. One of the things we are trying to improve on is the number of wides being bowled, naturally this will take time and practice. The boys new to club cricket are picking up the basics of cricket such as running between wickets, fielding positions and when to call when batting. It may seem minor but as they continue to learn as a team, I’m sure you will see more improvement in the lads performances.

A special thanks goes to DJ for his commitment and to all parents who come and support their boys and help out whenever possible.

Our latest overseas recruit is Dominic Bess, a 19 year old Somerset Spinner who hails from Sidmouth in Devon and was educated at Blundell’s School at Tiverton in the same county.

He took an interest in backyard cricket as a 7-8 year old when staying with his grandparents in Exeter. His grandfather Gerald was a keen sportsman who had played cricket for Sidmouth while the rest of the extended family was truly sport minded. His father Russell played professional Rugby Union in the English Premiership League for Exeter Chiefs, while his uncle Greg played Rugby Union with Bath and Somerset. Family members also played cricket for Sidmouth in the Devon League.

Dom is a clever bowler, interspersing his ‘Offies’ with a ‘flicker’ (leg break from the front of the hand), an arm ball and a knuckle ball. He prides himself on his game awareness and competitiveness plus one can observe a shrewd use of the crease. The combination of these assets led to him being awarded his County Cap for Somerset and a First class debut v. Pakistan at Taunton in July of this year. He went wicketless in his 30 overs for the match but two months later he was given another opportunity against Warwickshire. He excelled and bowled the cider country county to victory with

32 | P a g e westerneagles.com analyses of 6/28 and 2/31. The highlight was taking the wicket of Jonathon Trott and next ball catching Ian Bell from his own bowling. Dom was then selected for the final county match of the season against Notts, again at Taunton. This time he delivered with both bat and ball. He contributed 41 of 43 for the last wicket, with fellow spinner Jack Leach, in his only turn at the crease and took 5/43 in Notts’ first innings including a spell of five consecutive maidens. In between his First class debut and the Warwickshire feature Dom sandwiched three Under 19 ODIs against Sri Lanka.

Dom’s greatest thrill so far in his short cricket career is his T20 debut for Somerset. The match was played at the Ageas Bowl, Southampton in front of a crowd of 10,500 people.

Dom is on his second visit to Adelaide having played with Northern Districts last season. He returned because of the high standard of Club cricket in Australia compared with English Clubs and his acceptance into the Darren Lehmann Academy. He sees this high standard as due to the number of current and former First class players participating interspersed with some English players of similar calibre. This is not to denigrate English Club cricket but simply due to the pyramidal structure. He also acknowledges that English wickets are more conducive to bowlers.

He describes his introduction to West Torrens as “awesome”. “ The lads have been awesome. Brenton and Hags have been awesome and would like to thank them for sorting it and the Brown family for allowing me into them home for the 4 months I'm here"

Our latest female state representative is local product Brooke Harris. She was educated at Kidman Park P.S. and Henley H.S. She began her cricket with her brother Daniel in the U13s with the Woodville Rechabite Club from where she then entered the Young Eagles Development program and soon was selected to play in B Grade with the older girls. Brooke then followed career the pathway with State representation in U12s (SAPSASA) then U15s followed by U18s and finally the Scorpions.

Brooke is the second youngest female to debut for West Torrens playing her first A Grade match at the end of 2010 when only 12y. 198d. v. Tea Tree Gully at Henley Oval.

A major highlight of her career was her first senior century, 137 v. Port Adelaide in B grade as a 14 year old in 2011-12. In this game she put on 214 for the 3 rd wicket in partnership with Emma Bails. Earlier in the season she had the figures of 4/8 v. Southern Districts. Her allround capabilities saw her become a permanent member of the A Grade in the next season.

Equally important highlights of her brief career are her debut this year for the Scorpions against Tasmania and taking her first senior state wicket, allrounder Kristen Beames, in the win against Victoria at Lindisfarne Oval in Hobart. In addition Brooke has played in two 1 st Grade Premiership teams – 2013-14 (50 overs) and 2013-14 (T20).

When asked for her thoughts on West Torrens, Brooke replied “I've loved every minute of playing for West Torrens. The group of girls we have and have had , have always clicked and worked together so well. I love that the girls are included with the boys as well and they are inclusive of us which is rare at other clubs.”

34 | P a g e westerneagles.com

She thinks that we have a good program at West Torrens with the Young Eagles set up, which makes a really good pathway for the young girls to step up to 2 nd Grade and then to 1st Grade cricket. The more and more girls we get out into the Young Eagles program the larger the participation and the better it'll be for cricket in the future.

Brooke is a very talented young player, modest but confident and a staunch Club person. She now must knuckle down to making lots of runs in Grade cricket. If she can and not simply rely on her bowling, her continued determination and dedication to achieve goals, should see her have a long career as an allrounder at state level.

Kangaroo Island. Not long after she decided to join the primary school boys’ team with another girl who quit not long after but Lucy continued playing for the remainder of her primary school years.

She was lucky enough to have a very supportive coach and team mates who made her feel comfortable in the team environment. In one game the other team wouldn’t let her play due to the fact that she was a girl. Her male team mates got very defensive and offered not to play in the team so that she could.

Her Year nine P.E. teacher suggested that she try out for the under 15 state team for which she was selected to travel to Melbourne. Unfortunately the SACA did not enter U17 and U19 teams when she was eligible, but in 2007 when barely 17 she was selected in the SACA 2nd XI team to play at the Cricket Australia Women’s Cup. After the U15 Australian carnival she joined the Flinders University C.C. which then became part of West Torrens.

Lucy’s biggest thrill has been making her National League debut. Representing the state at any level is a buzz but being able to able to debut in front of friends and family for the first time was an amazing opportunity for her. Her first national league wicket came fairly close.

Her parents have had the biggest influence on her cricket. Her mum Kerryn, who served as the Women’s Co-ordinator at West Torrens, had a real influence on the mental side of things and her dad Paul, has taught her to find the positives in any situation. However her first primary school coach and recent West Torrens and current Scorpions coach Andrea McCauley have also had a significant impact on her game. Cathy Freeman was always a hero for her as a child because of the way that she represented her country with such pride and passion.
