Page 5 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Taking the President’s role from my good friend Scott Jones has been an eye- opening experience. I was always aware he spent many hours working behind the scenes but since taking on the role I’ve found out just how many things there are that make up this club. Many we do very well and some that undoubtably need improvement. The first part of this year has been a steep learning curve for most, but we will continue to strive to improve the club as best we can.

In the offseason we experienced a fair bit of change throughout the management of the club and have uncovered some brilliant people who have stepped into new roles. Without trying to name them all, I’m eternally grateful that we have Catherine Terry as our Secretary, Marty Edmunds (back in his old role) & Sam Turner as joint Junior Coordinators and Nicole Parsons as our new Women’s Coordinator. Paul Sibley has stepped into the role of Chairman and offered me great support & his links with HFC have continued to build on that relationship.

I, like my predecessor, strongly support the vision of Brenton Woolford and Mark Harrity for the future of the club to be of a high-performance focus and I hope that with the introduction of the new Academy and also the recruitment of Manning McInerny (Women’s 1st Grade, Men’s Assistant & U17 coach) we will be able to realise this concept. We are trying to adapt a policy of “more coaching, less training”. We aim to have more small group sessions with more emphasis on individual player development rather than endless net sessions. I’ve noticed the use of many new coaching aids & techniques used by our many wonderful coaches in all sections of the club. While on coaching it must be noted that we have a very deep, extremely well qualified and passionate group who are ably assisted by some magnificent Team Mangers, Scorers and other volunteers that continue to work tirelessly for the club and we are, as always, indebted to those people.

Further off field, Neil Tredwell (our new Junior Chair) in conjunction with Paul Caica (HFC) has just lodged a proposal that will (hopefully) see our club be the recipient of a grant that will be used to upgrade the lighting at Henley Oval to first grade playing standard and a total makeover of our training facility. We are also well into the current project of installing new unisex changing room facilities and it is hoped that we will see them up and running in 2020. These projects will mean that the club will need to dip into our current cash reserves and also find some new income streams to help supplement grants so please be prepared and willing to help us with that.

Stan the Statistician from Semaphore South says

Tahlia McGrath was appointed of SA Scorpions for the first two games of the Women’s National Cricket League competition (WNCL) when was unavailable. Cricket followed this up with bestowing on her the honour of leading an Australian XI v. Sri Lanka at Hurstville Oval, Sydney on September 27th. CA’s confidence in ‘T-Mac’ was further shown by her appointment to captain Australia A in the series against India in December. Tahlia joins Lauren Ebsary as the only two Sheagles to captain in the WNCL.

This season West Torrens has a record eight players in the South Australian senior teams (Redbacks, Scorpions and Strikers) 4 males and 4 females. Women – Ellie Falconer, Tahlia McGrath, Katie Mack, Amanda Men – , Spencer Johnson, Tim Oakley, In addition Daniel Drew and Bailey Capel are members of the Emerging Redbacks squad.

In the last Marsh One Day Cup match Callum Ferguson became South Australia’s highest run scorer in Domestic One Day cricket. His 122 (128b.) took his Aggregate to 3999 @ 41.2 in 110 games. This surpassed ’s Aggregate of 3963. ‘Ferg’ sits fifth on the overall One-Day Cup run scorers list across all teams behind Brad Hodge (5,597), (5,124), Jimmy Maher (4,589) and Lehmann (4,155) which is inclusive of his stint with Victoria. A great honour for a brilliant yet humble cricketer.

12 y.o. Tessa Davis who plays in the Women’s 2nd Grade team also fronts for the boys’ U.14 White side. She was the key bowler against Northern Districts with 3/15 from her 7 overs which included 3 maidens. She was also a member of the SA Under 13 Girls team in the National Carnival in . Emily Parsons a member of the Under 15 State squad has also held her own in the U.14 Whites.

Tahlia McGrath won the Player of the Match Award when the defeated the Perth Scorchers at Allan Border Field on 27 October. Her 65 n.o. from 46 balls (2x6s, 8x4s) rescued the Strikers from trouble at 3/22 to chase down the Scorchers 9/115 in 14.4 overs. Her partnership with English import Lauren Winfield yielded 94 runs.

In Round 4, Juniors Sam Turner (80) and Jack Gray (49) established a new 6th record for any U.14 team when they compiled 111 for the Reds v. Tea Tree Gully at Golden Grove High School. The previous Reds record of 98 was put together last season by Thomas Brown and Jack Haddad v. East Torrens at Victoria Park Sports Fields.

Two of our female players Isobel Bryksy (aged14) and Matilda Maitland (aged 13) showed the value of their experience with the Sheagles when they both hit half- centuries for Watervale Boys U16s v. Spalding on November 9.

Page 8 *** New Zealand international player and still a West Torrens registered player Sophie Devine has become the first Adelaide Striker (male or female) to reach 1500 runs in the WBBL. Unfortunately Sophie doesn’t have the opportunity to play for the Sheagles any more as she no longer fronts for the Scorpions in the WNCL.

*** Sophie later followed this up with a remarkable feat against the Stars in the WBBL at Karen Rolton Oval on November 10. She scored 85 n.o. from 56 balls. She had not hit a six until the second ball of the 20th over but then hit every remaining ball of the innings for SIX – 5 balls, 5 sixes. In addition Sophie hit 6 fours. English import Lauren Winfield scored a single from the first ball of the 20th over, handing the opportunity to the ‘Smash Sister’ Sophie to plunder the remaining five balls. 31 runs from the over is a WBBL record (and quite probably a BBL record). ***

With two early centuries in 1st Grade Bailey Capel has become the third West Torrens player to score three 1st Grade centuries before their 20th birthday. The others are with four and the late Ken Ridings, who was unable to develop to his full potential as he lost his life piloting a Sunderland over the Bay of Biscay in May 1943, also with three. Bailey also has a 1st Grade 99 to his credit.

Nathan Marshall’s 123 and 4/18 v. Southern District at John Mitchell Oval in Round 4, is the best ever all round performance for West Torrens in Under 16s, surpassing Ben Hutchinson’s 100 n.o. and 4/21 v. East Torrens at Campbelltown Oval in March 2012. He could do even better if ‘Holler’ didn’t make him use his original 35 y.o. bat. Nathan had earned a welcome rest at stumps on the second day as he had also fielded for the 1st Grade throughout their entire first session (2 hours) before his own match, substituting for a sick Kane Richardson. Nathan also represented South Australia in the Under 17 Australian Junior Squash Championships in Davenport, Tasmania in September.

During the winter months three of our players represented South Australia in Indoor Cricket tournaments. They were : Under 18 Girls - Emily Hinze (Vice Capt) and Paris Hall Under 16 Boys - Charlie Edmunds (Vice Capt).

It isn’t easy to outscore your age when playing 1st Grade when you are over 40 years old. In the first Round of the Women’s 1st Grade 50 over comp, former Test batsman, 50 y.o. Caroline Ward scored a match winning 54 n.o. in 146 minutes against Kensington, sharing a match winning partnership with 16 y.o. Brinkworth recruit Lucy Meyer, to get the Sheagles over the line. Editor’s Note : ‘Wardy’ will be embarrassed by this par as she shuns the limelight, but her efforts are truly appreciated and need to be documented.

Page 15 REPORTS - MEN’S FIRST GRADE

First Grade One Day and Two Day games

The season began with the club losing recruit Blake MacDonald back to Sydney due to health issues and then an ongoing injury management program has meant that Spencer Johnson has been unable to play. Kamau Leverock was also committed to the World Cup program with Bermuda which meant that he was unable to join the club until mid-December. With Bailey Capel making a notable start to the season with 397 @ 63, our has been very competitive in the main, however we need to improve our potency with the ball. We are sitting in eleventh position with 25 points, so we have a lot of improvement to come. Injury and availability of a number of players having first class and List A commitments (4 players) has impacted significantly. As a club we need to work on improving player ownership and the depth of our playing list across the club. It is great to see the number of young players in our club however we need to continue to build the skill level and game awareness of our playing group to become more competitive as a club.

The first game was a 1 day game at Woodville, we started slowly and then struggled to get a competitive total. Daniel Drew with 65 from 95 balls, Warren Peters 36 from 47 balls and Callum Ferguson 21 from 46 balls were best with the bat. Woodville got the runs in the 37th over with Josh Slee and Daniel Drew both getting 2 . The second game was also a 1 day game against Kensington, we batted first and made a very competitive 5/275, Bailey Capel made an excellent century with 107 from 117 balls, Callum Ferguson made 75 from 92 balls and Josh Dascombe made 34 from 26 balls. Kensington batted too well and got the runs in the 49th over, Josh Dascombe taking 3 wickets and Josh Slee getting 2. In Round 3 we played Northern Districts in a one day game and we made 8/274, Drew 58, Eric Carrington 55 and Dascombe 48 were best with the bat. We then dismissed Northerns for 189 with Logan Pastyn 4 wickets and Ben Williams 2 wickets being best with the ball to get our first win of the season. In Round 4 we played Glenelg who batted first and made 282, Dacombe took 4 wickets and Drew took 3. We then batted and made 7/232 with Capel making 70 and Dascombe making 52, so the game ended as a draw. In Round 5 we played another one day game and Tea Tree Gully batted first and made 6/349 which would be tough for any side to chase down, Tim Oakley with 2 wickets and Drew with 2 wickets were best with the ball. We batted very well but not well enough as we fell 30 runs short in making 329. Capel made another outstanding 123 from 115 balls, Pat Fisher 64 from 72 balls and Dascombe 50 from 27 balls. In Round 6 we played Southern District, we batted first and went from an excellent start of 1/132 to lose 9/98 and be all out for 230, Warren Peters made 66, Fisher 47 n.o. and Carrington 36. Southern then batted and made 8/301 to win the game with Dascombe being best with the ball with 4 wickets.

20/20 First Grade

We have played 2 games at the time of printing. We defeated Emerging Redbacks WHO made 9/123, Drew, Kane Richardson and Dascombe all taking 2 wickets, we then got the runs in the 18th over, Capel, Fisher and Richardson were best with the bat. We then played Kensington who made 7/150, Richardson and Dascombe took 2 wickets each, we then made 8/114 with Richardson and Peters best with the bat.

Page 16 Brenton Woolford Cricket Director REPORTS - WOMEN’S FIRST GRADE

The women's First Grade started of the 2019/20 T20 season with a very different looking setup to the season gone. The senior group welcomed newly appointed senior coach Manning McInerney who brings an extensive experience in coaching women’s cricket and an eagerness to hone the young group of cricketers we have into a competitive 1st Grade side. The group also welcomed our newest recruit Amanda- Jade Wellington. ‘Wello’, a current Adelaide striker, Scorpion and recently named Australian A cricketer donned the blue and gold on Sundays while still supporting her ‘former’ club Port Adelaide by playing senior men’s cricket on Saturdays.

The 1st Grade commenced the season playing all T20 matches and completed this mode of the game in fourth place with 2 wins, 5 losses and 1 tie. The programming is planned to coincide with the WBBL season and so not impact severely on the 50 overs season.

The First Grade took to the field in most games of the T20 season with a younger inexperienced side with the WBBL taking Amanda- Jade, Tahlia McGrath, Ellie Falconer and New Strikers recruit Katie Mack, for majority of the T20 season. Whilst still being very competitive, this gave many of the girls chances to take on bigger roles in the team with U18’s Emily Hinze and Paris Hall leading the charge with ball and bat respectively. Even younger Emily Parsons came in for her first real stint in the 1s and been extremely tidy with the ball, with our more experienced opening partnership in Ange Treloar and Kayla McGrath helping us to modest totals.

The individual highlights were the batting of 15 y.o. Paris Hall, who headed the Aggregate with 128 runs @ 42.67 and Jess Joseph with 7 wickets @ 21.57. Ellie Falconer, despite being away with the Strikers several times to act as 12th or 13th player (!!) secured 6 wickets @12.5 and an ER of 4.37.

The 50 over season has commenced with a strong win against Kensington whom we dismissed for 137 with captain Jess Joseph taking 5/29 (Editor’s amendment). Caroline Ward’s 54 n.o. ably assisted by 16 y.o. Brinkworth player Lucy Meyer 12 n.o. steered the Sheagles to victory in the 45th over.

Jess Joseph – 1st Grade captain

REPORTS - MEN’S SECOND GRADE

The 2nd Grade has had an up and down start to the season with a couple of comprehensive wins together with a couple of narrow losses. The team has varied from week to week with a number of injuries and state selections changing the composition of the team quite a lot over the first few games. There have been stand out performances with the bat from Murphy Short, who has excelled opening the batting in the 1 day games, along with Tom Sibley who has shown that he is extremely capable of taking the step up to be a regular 1st Grade player with the bat and ball.

Page 17 The has been more evenly spread across the early rounds with Tom Kennewell, Murphy Short and Darren Joseph all producing excellent spells of bowling at different times. DJ has done a fantastic job controlling the middle overs of the 1 day games, particularly against Kensington where we might have been in for a huge score had he not produced the fantastic spell that he did. Overall the fate of the season is going to depend how well we can manage to pull together as a unit. There is certainly the chance for this team to produce a premiership run if we can put games together well enough for the remainder of the year.

Pat Fisher Captain

REPORTS - WOMEN’S SECOND GRADE

The 2nd grade has had an up and down start to the year with some solid performances and a number of close losses. We ended the T20 competition strongly with two wins in a row, finishing the competition with three wins and three losses to sit 4th on the table. There is plenty of potential in this young group of players with our bowling performances having been outstanding all season. If we can find some consistency with the bat and in the field, I believe we will have success going forward. Throughout the competition, with several players called up to the 1st grade and state teams, we have had many young guns make their debut for the Sheagles, showing plenty of enthusiasm and talent that we can expect to see more of in the future. Overall it has been a combined team effort to achieve the results we’ve had so far with contributions from everyone. Although there have been some really encouraging performances, there is plenty of room for improvement and with the 40 over cricket up now and regular players due back in the team we will be hoping for more consistency and some positive results over the coming games.

Brianna Cheetham Captain

REPORTS - MEN’S THIRD GRADE

The 3rd grade so far this season has seen some solid performances without getting reward for effort. A couple of close losses, a washout and our only win sees us sitting around mid-table after 5 games. Not being able to field the same team each week has seen us struggling to find consistency. We have been lucky in gaining some new recruits who have acquitted themselves very well. Manning McInerney (Prospect), Josh Grove (Tea Tree Gully), Patrick Moore (Woodville), Patrick Taylor (Sturt) and Dan Cooke (Darren Lehmann Academy) have all been welcome additions to the team.

So far this season we have had everyone contribute in some way, however, we haven’t been able to put in a complete team performance. Best individual performance so far has been Luke Terry, who almost single handily dragged us over the line in our round 1 loss to Woodville. Being only 15 years old, he finished with a very mature and entertaining 81 . The high point so far has been our win against Northern Districts, after a sub-par batting performance, our bowlers lead by Josh Grove (3/13)

Page 18 and Darcy Hunkin (3/27) ran riot to have Northerns 7/37 at one stage and delivering our first win in the 3rd grade for almost a year!

As a new group this year, we have gelled together really well and have enjoyed playing together. There is plenty of talent around and hopefully we can get a consistent team together and we will start seeing some results go our way.

Alex Hutton Captain

REPORTS - MEN’S FOURTH GRADE

The 4th grade have had an up and down start to the season, with an average age of around 18 the team has been competitive whilst only winning 2 from 6 games with 1 draw.

The first round saw a close loss to Woodville, taking it to the last over, with a special mention to Lachie Murdock (55) a great knock by a first year senior. The first win of the season came against Northern Districts through some great bowling from Eddy (Mohit) Khanna, Brad Lewis and Brendan Hutton who all took 3 wickets each and great fielding by Shelby Grindlay taking 4 brilliant catches. After two losses the boys bounced back with a first innings win over Southern District, with Shelby and Lachie Murdock leading the way again with the bat. A great team bowling performance, with a special mention to Jack Hawke (U16 red Captain) who bowled exceptional for a young player taking 4/29. So far the 4th Grade has not quite received the success they have wanted but hopefully the boys can keep improving and grow in confidence as the season goes on.

Josh Joseph Acting Captain

REPORTS - UNDER 16 RED

The Under 16 Red team currently sit on equal points with 5 other teams in the competition, all with 3 wins from the first 5 rounds.

Starting poorly against Woodville we were bowled out for 50 at our new home John Mitchell Oval. 11 Extras was the highest score for the day and the total was nothing our bowlers could do much about.

A great response was seen in Round 2 against Northern Districts at the Paddocks. A 5 run win off the back of a great partnership between Nathan Marshall (49) and Jacob Chapman (39). Chandan Saddi and Marshall took 2 wickets each.

Mitchell Reserve once again saw our batsmen capitulate to be all out for 88. Jack Hawke the only player to show some intestinal fortitude making a well compiled 54. Adelaide passed the total 6 wickets down with Harrison Cook bowling superbly to take 3 for 9 off 7 overs.

Rain reduced the Tea Tree Gully game to a one-dayer. Chasing 139 we passed the score 7 down. Rhys Kozned and Sean Feleppa contributing 29 and 22 respectively and

Page 19 Clayton Lewis batted brilliantly with 49 off 50 balls. Chandan Saddi again bowling well with 3 wickets and Lachie Tredwell taking 2 important wickets.

A focus for the Reds this year has been to grind an innings out and bat time. It was extremely pleasing for a young cricketer with plenty of talent to finally achieve this goal. Nathan Marshall batted beautifully in round 5 to compile 123 not out against Southern Districts mixing aggression with patience. A total of 227 was too much for the visitors all out for 125 with Marshall taking 4/18 off 16 and Saddi and Feleppa 2 wickets each. Hopefully this reinforced to the lads that you can bat first at Mitchell Reserve, post a great total with some hard work at the crease and put pressure on the opposition.

We look forward to the Test break and head to Glenelg with some momentum and confidence.

REPORTS - UNDER 16 WHITE

Rounds 1-4 After welcoming new players Isaac Gillard, Charlie Sanderson, Finn Fontaine and Harry Lienert to the to the club for Round 1, it was a new look U16 Whites who took the field against Woodville. Gillard wasted no time settling in, taking three wickets in his first spell to end up with 3/32. Captain Nick Boeyen was miserly taking 2/18 off eight, but after having Woodville on the ropes early we let them off a bit as they posted 7/168. Woodville bowled well and we were in serious trouble before Jacob Chapman (66 off 71) partnered with Izaac Niemann (15) and dragged us back into it, but after the openers returned and dismissed the set batsmen it was just always out of reach and we fell 20 short.

Round 2 was a struggle. We thought chasing 165 was possible, but with Northern Districts regular Reds opening bowlers playing Whites, they ripped through us to be all out for a disappointing 27 with Wides being top scorer. The highlight in this disaster was new player Charlie Sanderson – who opened the batting the week before – telling us he was actually a bowler and taking a wicket with his first ball for the club. Round 3 against Adelaide was an up and down affair. After Adelaide made a good start, Aiden Kakoschke (8 overs 2/21) and new player Vinuka Jayasinghe (5 overs 3/20) pegged them back to a par score of 158. The boys bounced back from the Northern Districts match led by Harry Lienert (49) and Izaac Niemann (39) before some late hitting by Hawke and Boeyen saw us needing a four off the last ball to pinch a win. It wasn’t to be as we went down by 2 runs.

Lienert again led the way again with 57 at the top of the order against TTG in Round 4. He had support from Jayasinghe (23) before regular wickets while chasing runs saw us post a sub-par score of 122. TTG went hard in the chase and were rarely troubled, passing the score 2 wickets down and with overs to spare. It’s been a tough start but at least now we know who bats and bowls where, and the boys are coming together well as a side.

Page 20 REPORTS - UNDER 14 RED

Round 1 After losing the toss on a beautiful sunny day Woodville decided to bat…after us! With the outfield resembling the light rough at nearby Kooyonga boundaries were hard to come by. We reached a competitive 8 for 154 off our 40 overs. With the loss of 5 quick wickets Woodville were chasing the game from the outset West Torrens winning by 20 runs.

Round 2 Round 2 took us to the Paddocks, uncharacteristically it wasn’t 35 degrees plus tax (very rare for a journey to Salisbury in cricket season). We put on a flawless display restricting ND to a respectful 150 off 40 overs with a quick outfield. WT passed them only 2 down with 15 overs to spare.

Round 3 After 2 good wins we faced a big challenge against one of the top seeds in Adelaide equipped with a plethora of state representatives. We got off to a reasonable start after winning the toss and batting first. A middle and lower order collapse saw us post a very modest 70. Which was never going to be enough and the Buffalos got them 1 down.

Round 4 After a disappointing loss to Adelaide we needed to bounce back hard against TTG. At 5 for 50 things weren’t going to plan but through some patient and aggressive batting we posted a very competitive 7 for 208 off our full 60 overs. Through a steady flow of wickets all day. In week 2 we bowled out TTG and won by 23 runs.

Sam Turner Snr. Co-Manager

Editor’s Note : Sam did not detail any individual performances in his Report. These can be seen in the ‘Best with ....’ charts. Leading Aggregate performers are – Batting Sam Turner Jnr. 196 runs @ 39.20, Bowling Max Davidson 6 wkts. @ 22.00 and Fielding Jack Gray 5c. 2r.o.

REPORTS - UNDER 14 WHITE

Under 14 Whites 2019/2020……..rounds 1-5 The 14 whites team has started the season sensationally with the first two games v Woodville and Northern Districts, unfortunately just falling short late in each game. Hence with so much to like from the team in the first two games, the” learnings" from these early games losses allowed the team to progress with their batting. The intent to bat out the full 40 & 60 overs helped the team to record the two back to back wins over Adelaide and Tea Tree Gully ……this is a really exciting competitive young team that has so much talent considering most of the team are still 11/12 &13…PS….watch this Group in years to come ..!

Unfortunately with 4 players away IN Round 5 v Southern Districts, we were unable to be competitive with the bat and ball for the full 60 overs. Well done to the players that stepped up from community level, they should be proud of their efforts ..!

Page 21 Looking ahead - hopefully we have everyone available with a big game v Glenelg next up ..!

EXCELLENT START TO THE SEASON - WELL DONE TEAM -GREAT WORK ..!

REPORTS - RAY SUTTON SHIELD

This years RSS squad was one of the youngest we have ever fielded with year 6's and 5's making up half the squad. There was some individual highlights throughout the carnival such as Alex Cappelluti’s batting at the top of the order (81 runs @ 20.25) and the spin bowling of Jack Gray’s ‘offies’ (4 wkts. @ 16.50 ER 3.36) and Archie Robertson’s ‘leggies’ (4 wkts. @ 23.50). A big thankyou to all the parents who helped throughout the RSS Season. Goodluck to all the players in the U.14s and Community Clubs.

REPORTS - UNDER 16-17 COUNTRY v. CITY Trial

On Sunday 24th November, Callum Agnew’s WT City U16-17 boys headed to Arthurton Oval to play Lachie Pointon’s WT Country XI (the U16 Yorke Peninsula Country Cup Team). The pitch jagged sharply off the seam but the outfield was extremely fast so good balls were difficult to defend but bad balls were easily despatched for runs. This was the pattern of both innings where top order batsmen fell to the new ball but and those prepared to bat patiently later in the innings were rewarded with runs.

The WT City XI batted first with Ned Maguire (26) weathering the early barrage to bat for 23 overs, sharing a 50 run partnership with Jack Hawke (28) to take the score to 3/79. Coming in at 4/98, Felix Jones (30 no) showed great application to carry the score to 164 when the City XI were bowled out in the 41st over. Wickets were well shared among the WT Country XI bowlers with Harrison Stock (2/5) and Tommy Michael (2/35) the multiple wicket-takers.

After a fantastic lunch supplied by our hosts, WT Country XI opener Jack Rowntree (12) held out some very tight bowling from Jack Hawke (3/29) and Skipper Kyle

Page 22 Lieblich (2/29), on the lively pitch to set a platform for the run chase, where James Reuther (18) and Jacob Battle (22) and Jacob Hickman (20) contributed well. Colby Abbott (2/16) and Lachie Tredwell (2/24) continued to bowl well through the middle of the innings. With 30 runs to victory, WT Country XI were scoring freely and batted with momentum until the Skipper came back and finished the innings to have WT Country XI all out for 135.

It was a fantastic day, with plenty of friendly banter on and off the field and the City lads certainly gaining an appreciation of the efforts their country team-mates do each week without complaining. Well done fellas!

Good luck to the WT Country XI Team that plays in the Country Cup in December – they are scheduled at Henley Grange Memorial Oval on December 11th, so head down and support them if you can.

A similar game between WT City and WT Country XI will be held for U14s in December. Stay tuned for more details.

REPORTS - WOOLWORTHS JUNIOR BLASTERS

This season we have 25 Woolworths Junior Blasters registered. Our coaches are Alex Hutton (Head Coach), and Josh Joseph, with Jess Joseph popping in to help out every now and again. Alex and Josh have been planning some great activities for the kids each week to practise batting, bowling, throwing and catching. Our Junior Blasters are having a great time and their cricket skills really improving.

Editor’s Note : Donna does a tremendous job with the Blasters. Her communication skills with the children, their parents and even us ‘grandies’ is outstanding.

HOMAGE AND HUMOUR IN HISTORY

Legal Eagle club Humourist During an A grade match against Woodville in the late 70s, West Torrens keeper Mick Brien an opposition batsman off of Kevin Lewis’ bowling. The square leg umpire, the efficient and often officious John Wilson, while repairing the wicket, remarked to Mick that he had ‘come perilously close to taking the ball in front of the wicket’. The captain, renowned humorist and legal eagle, the late Ian Edgley was at slip and replied that the keeper was ‘allowed to’. Wilson retorted ‘you are NOT’. Edgley ‘you ARE’. Wilson ‘you are NOT’. Edgley ‘you ARE’. And so the debate went on until eventually the umpire inquired of the captain as to what he was on about. ‘Edge’ replied that the keeper ‘was allowed to come perilously close to taking the ball in front of the wicket’!

Page 23 Ian Chappell In May 1979 an agreement was reached between the Australian Cricket Board and P.B.L. Sports Pty. Ltd. (World Series Cricket) thus ending the serious division in Australian cricket. Not only did this allow David Hookes to return to West Torrens but with him came former Australian captain Ian Michael Chappell. He had been ostracised by his former club Glenelg during the two Packer World Series Cricket seasons and as he lived within the West Torrens boundaries he sought to play for the Eagles. David informed Rocka that Ian would contact him. He received the very welcome telephone call during which Ian expressed his desire to play for West Torrens, checked about practices and a clearance from North Melbourne, the V.C.A. Club for which he had last played. His next poser demonstrated what a genuine person he is, the question was “How much will it cost me to play?” There was never any thought of what sort of offer the Club might make to gain his services, simply a gesture that he wanted to play cricket and that he was just another club cricketer who would put in like any of his team-mates. Rocka received a letter from Ian in June 1979 indicating that Kepler Wessels was also keen to play for West Torrens, but a more lucrative contract lured the South African to Queensland.

1953-54 SACA Senior Grades

During the 1950s there were an odd number of teams in both A and B Grades. Initially the A Grade team with the Bye played the B Grade team with the Bye. However this idea was abandoned after West Torrens A Grade played Junior Colts (a team of Juniors from hard wicket Associations playing in B Grade) at Thebarton Oval on 6 February 1954 and the latter was all out for 4 in 37 minutes and 7 (8 ball) overs.

The J.C. opening pair of Bruce Dodson (former WT A Grade captain) and Leak scored 2 each before the first wicket fell at 4. Then 10 wickets fell for 0 runs. Jack McKinlay took 6/3 (4x8 ball overs) and Ron Williams 4/1 (3x8 ball overs.). West Torrens scored 2/170 (Daryl Wood 80 n.o. Jack Carr 56) before declaring and then dismissing J.C. a second time for 93 when Lindsay Head took 4/33 and Norm King 3/36. The teams did not need to return for the second Saturday. The following season the SACA discontinued this idea and compelled the A Grade team with the Bye to play a Country Association in a country town.

Premiership 1953 (51 SANFL league games) A Grade Baseball (West Torrens Baseball Club)

Jack Carr was one of the most admired players and benefactors of the West Torrens Cricket Club. Jack began his cricket career as a sixteen year old with the New Thebarton Druids playing in the West Parklands on the site of the current Park 25 grounds. A few of the young Druids decided to try their luck at Thebarton Oval and Jack was selected as wicketkeeper in the D grade team which played in the Independent Central Cricket Association. He admitted to keeping badly but made a couple of good scores and was rushed straight into the B grade under Bert Heairfield, where he made three nineties and won Chairman Andy Smith’s trophy for the most improved junior.

Jack’s winter sport had been baseball and he first registered with the Adelaide Baseball Club but transferred to West Torrens in 1946 and debuted in A grade in 1949 playing 10 games. As a 17 y.o. he had pitched WT to the District B premiership in 1946 in a 4-2 victory over Glenelg. Page 26 . A job transfer to Woomera at the Anglo-Australian Joint Defence Project, a Commonwealth weapons design and test program, saw him play baseball on Sunday morning and football in the afternoon. During the 1950s and 1960s, the complex was the second busiest rocket range in the world next to Cape Canaveral in the USA.

On his return to Adelaide the Hank brothers, with whom he was acquainted at the Cricket Club, suggested he have a run with the West Torrens Football Club in a trial. He was rather ambivalent about the suggestion and being an avid punter decided to go to the Victoria Park races instead. However by one o’clock he was broke (nice punting Jack!), so he rode his bike home, got out the kit bag threw in some boots and togs and rode over to ‘Thebby’ Oval. He immediately approached Bob Hank and said, “Righto, I’m here for a run”. Only ‘Carrey’ would lose all his money at the races, then have the effrontery to go to a SANFL football club trial, front the dual Magarey Medalist and as a very inexperienced footballer get a run in the main trial. As luck would have it he did pretty well and was selected in the league team for the first match of the year. It is quite ironic that this brash young baseballer-cum-punter-cum-footballer had never seen a league football match before he ran onto the field in that game. History has now recorded that he is the only man to have played in the last West Torrens League football (No.10 jumper) Premiership and captain West Torrens to an A Grade cricket premiership.

During the 1950s he played in three A Grade Cricket Premierships and took over the captaincy for the 1960-61 season. Whilst ‘Carrey’ was a star in the galaxy of the nineteen fifties, it was in his five years as captain of the A grade that he had his greatest influence and hence the reason for the pride of place in the annals of Eagle history. His four Talbot Smith fielding trophies for the most outstanding fielder in the SACA A Grade competition affirm his position as probably the most brilliant fielder in a brilliant fielding side. In addition he was the Eagles Premier batsman on three occasions, Premier bowler once and capped of a brilliant career with the 1963-64 Bradman Medal, the oldest man to do so.

As captain Jack exerted enormous influence over the Club. He was an extrovert who had the ability to enthuse people to succeed and to enjoy the game. A winning atmosphere exuded from him and this spread throughout the Club.

‘Carrey’ had played eighteen seasons in A grade, played in four cricket and one football premierships, had been selected in a state second eleven, won four Talbot Smith Fielding trophies, had made 4807 runs including six centuries and had taken 120 wickets with his straight ‘leggies’ (if you played back you were out!). It was appropriate therefore that he made his highest score in his last minor round match when his team was in considerable trouble (chasing 356) and steered them to within 14 runs of victory.

Jack’s last game was the end of season ‘giggle’ match. These were official SACA matches but were played reluctantly and without much ‘grace’ while the SACA Semi- finals were staged, simply to prolong the season and keep SANFL football clubs off the jointly leased ovals. The SANFL Clubs were beginning the football season earlier and earlier and demanding longer leasing rights from Councils. Some Football Clubs such as Port Adelaide would even encroach on normal cricket training nights without the courtesy of seeking permission, so the SACA Grade Cricket Committee decided to make a stance. The game in question was against Prospect at Thebarton Oval. Jack Page 27 made 22 in the first innings and it was largely due to his 66 not in the second, that the side converted a large first innings deficit into an outright victory. Jack then re-located to Melbourne to manage a business which he duly purchased and continued in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association with Kew.

It was further fitting that in his last match, albeit one that was looked upon with disdain by players, he captained the side to victory at Thebarton Oval where an exciting and extremely valuable career had begun. Many of the ‘old guard’ regard Jack as the best captain that they have played under. He was strong, respected, a great bloke who didn’t much care whether or not he was liked, because he had a particular job to do. Winning was very important to him as he led from the front and was quite willing to take risks to win but above all else he was an absolutely loyal West Torrens Club man - something which is not quite as discernible in sporting Clubs today.

There is one famous story concerning ‘Carrey’. It happened after a players’ tea and he must have decided that he needed to let off steam. He was a person always in control of the situation, sobriety was paramount so he didn’t consume measurable amounts of alcohol. However on this occasion he brought along a copious quantity of Yalumba Autumn Brown sweet sherry. ‘Carrey’ was thirsty, so he attempted to quench it with his Autumn Brown, an eccentric taste for a warm evening. To the previous players’ tea Brian Flaherty had invited a group of judo enthusiasts to give an exhibition and one of the routines that they performed was to dive over a chair, landing on a tumbling mat and finishing with a forward somersault. On the night in question many of the players were engrossed in card games and a few beers but ‘Carrey’ was up to other things. He placed a chair in the middle of the change room, carefully spread some sheets of newspaper on the floor in front of the chair, went to the other side and measured out a run-up as though he was going to bowl and used a piece of chalk to mark it. He then limbered up and did a few rehearsal runs. The previously poker engrossed throng suddenly turned their attention to the skipper in acute wonderment. He took off from his mark, ran to the chair, dived beautifully over it, completed a perfect somersault on the floor and lay there motionless. The throng applauded and returned to their previous more important pastimes. A few minutes later Jack was still laying there, a smile on his countenance but unconscious! Suddenly someone realized there was an emergency and rushed to his aid. After due attention he returned to external awareness and when asked the reason for the spread newspapers he replied that “they were there to break the fall!”

Long time friend and dual Magarey Medalist Bob Hank recalled that Jack was not averse to giving any of the opposition a ‘spray’ on the sporting field. During the 1953 SANFL Grand Final at (the last which West Torrens won before their amalgamation with Woodville in 1991) he encountered the indomitable Port Adelaide and state captain Fos Williams and according to Bob gave Fos the greatest on field sledging that Fos ever received. Mild mannered and good natured Bob never revealed the quotes for which Jack became famous.

One of the Eagle’s legendary cricketers, the mercurial Jack Carr, added another achievement to an already enviable sporting record in 2014 when the 85 year old hit an 83 ‘off the stick’ at the none too easy Portsea Golf Club on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. Very few people ever break their age at Golf. He was still playing off the enviable handicap of 17-18. He repeated the feat in the following year also. Further to his list of achievements he was State Doubles Darts Champion. Page 28 A truly generous man, Jack always supported the Eagles with a substantial annual donation. Soon after his diagnosis with a terminal illness he passed on a 5-figure sum (not to be revealed during his lifetime) to the West Torrens Cricket Club as a legacy. In our battle with the SACA to remain an independent entity Jack was always there indicating financial support should it be needed.

Jack died from mesothelioma, 10 days short of his 90th birthday. His daughter Sue, had passed away from cervical cancer a fortnight prior, in the same hospice. They left no family. True to his philosophy to shun the limelight, he requested no funeral nor farewell ceremony. His ashes will be interred with his parents at Lipson on Eyre Peninsula, the town of his birth.

Farewell to a and incredibly supportive and generous man – a true Eagle legend. Vale Jack Welby Carr.

Clubs West Torrens 1964-65/1965-66, Teachers College 1966-67/1972-73, University 1973-74/1979-80

WT Debut #328 v. Kensington at Kensington Gdns. Res. (now Parkinson Oval) 20 Feb 1965 aged 17y. 162d. 254 runs @ 18.15 H.S. 51 14 wkts for 550 runs @ 39.30 14 games (1964-65 and 1965-66) Bradman Medallist 1976-77 14 A Grade games

Kevin Griffiths made his A Grade debut for West Torrens while still at Henley HS where he had enrolled for Leaving Honours (Year 12), after 4 years at Thebarton Boys Technical HS. and was aged 17y. 162d. at the time. This game was one of the early A Grade matches at Kensington Gardens Reserve (now Parkinson Oval) after the ‘Browns’ had moved up the Parade from the old Kensington Oval which had been converted into the Olympic Sports Field.. He scored 29 and took 0-62. Fellow Henley HS debutants that day were Jeff Barnes and Brian Cakebread. He continued to play A Grade the following season but was then required to play for Teachers College and finished his career at the University Cricket Club.

He turned out for Teachers from 1966-67 until 1972-73 and then commencing further studies at Adelaide University crossed to the ‘Blacks’ where he played 87 A Grade matches in 7 seasons (1973/74 until 1979/80). He was captain in 1976/77 and then assumed the role of captain coach (from Graham Levy) from 1977/78 to 1979/80.

‘Griff’ was an extremely competitive medium/fast bowler and lower order batsman who prized his wicket. Fit, tall and strongly built and bowling off a relatively short run up for an opening bowler he could bowl most of the day if needed. He bowled an impeccable line and length and with perhaps a slight round arm slinging action moved the ball

Page 29 predominantly away from the right hander but had a very useful off cutter and slower ball.

He played in the SA Colts game in 1967-68 Season against a WA side that included Lillie, Marsh, Yardley and Massie. SA won under the leadership of another West Torrens/ Henley HS player, Ian Edgley.

A great all round sportsman he was also a better than average footballer. ‘Griff’ played 30 games for South Adelaide in the SANFL from 1971. He commenced the 1973 season with South but later in the season returned to Teachers College and was included in SA Amateur League team which won the Australian Amateur Carnival in Melbourne and was selected in the Australian team.

Again he crossed from Teachers College in a second sport, to be captain coach of the Adelaide University Football Club from 1974 -1976 taking out the Flag in 1974 & 75 and runners up in 1976.

Besides his sporting prowess ‘Griff’ was a widely qualified and erudite scholar with a Dip P.E. and a Dip. T. from Adelaide Teachers’ College, a B.A. (Hons) and an M.A. from the capped by a Doctorate in Education leadership from the University of West Michigan in Kalamazoo.

He was at one time General Manager of the SACA (1985-87) and for many years a Board Member.

‘Griff’ has been ill for some time but had reported feeling better during recent months. On Tuesday evening 29 October he drove off to his book Club but it seems he may have felt ill in transit and parked his car. He was found dead at the wheel at Urrbrae. He had turned 72 in September.

Special thanks to Rob O’Shaughnessy former Prospect, Tea Tree Gully and University player and University CC historian for his assistance.

PICKERING Peter Robert b.11 Oct 1931 d. Hendon 3 Nov 2019 West Torrens 1948-49 to 1957-58 and 1963-64 31 A Grade games Debut No. 273. v. Woodville at Woodville Oval, January 1951

Peter Pickering joined the Eagles as a 17 y.o. in C Grade in 1948 and gradually progressed through the ranks until he debuted in A Grade in January 1951. He was 12th man in the 1954-55 A Grade Premiership side but played in the victorious 1957-58 B Grade Premiership under Maurie ‘Tracker’ Sykes after which he retired from Grade cricket.

Peter was enticed to return to captain the C Grade for the 1963-64 season when he personally had a fine season scoring 507 runs @ 33.80 to win the SACA Grade Aggregate and which is still the 3rd highest all time aggregate in C Grade for West Torrens. FRY May Edith d. 12 October 2019

Page 30 May was a Life Member and legend of the Grange Cricket Club where her husband the late Barry, a former West Torrens player, was President for decades. May worked tirelessly in the canteen at Grange for many years, among her many other contributions. After Barry was awarded an OAM for services to cricket, he steadfastly maintained that 50% of it belonged to May.

All at the West Torrens District Cricket Club offer their sincere condolences to those families who have lost their loved ones. ALL THE KINGS’ MEN

The recently published history of the Club in the 19th century All The Kings’ Men – A History of the Hindmarsh C.C. 1857 – 1897 has won the Australian Cricket Society’s Literary Award (Jack Pollard Trophy) for the best cricket book written and published in Australia for the 2017-18 Financial Year. The Judging Panel spread across more than one state, reviews every Cricket Book published in Australia during that period. All The Kings’ Men was considered the best. There are still a few copies available for sale through Denis Brien ([email protected]) at $40 plus postage to country or interstate. The book would make an ideal present for a cricket ‘tragic’ or someone who is simply interested in the history of the colony of South Australia in the 19th century as it combines both – one being reliant on the other.

ANDREA McCAULEY - Elected to the SACA Board

We know Andrea will work tirelessly in the best interests of all sections of cricket and particularly be a voice for Grassroots and Women’s cricket. Thanks to all of our Members who supported Andrea’s candidacy. Best wishes Andrea from all at the Eagles and Sheagles.
