MEN’S FIRST XI SEASON REPORT

The preseason began with an air of optimism but it would be fair to say not a lot of confidence after the departure of a few high quality players from 2017/18

season. Paul Gloury’s retirement was probably the fixture. But, I can remember sitting in the stands as we most significant considering he had accumulated tried to chase down 200 odd that game….we were all around 2500 runs in his 5 seasons with the club. excited about watching Somil play his first game with us in the ones. Obviously he had piled on runs lower in But there was a determination within the young group the grades, but despite his brief innings, we knew we of players to move on and create their own destiny, had unearthed some gold! career paths and own shadows! This is when the tide changed. The season began with an excellent team performance of 242, batting well into the dark against St A midweek T20 victory against a cocky Bayswater Bernards…..highest score was Riz’s 33 proving most and the following Saturday had us perched against had got off to a start. But from there our next four 2nd placed Mt Waverley with us at the bottom with a 1 weeks were below par, beginning with our inability to and 4 win/loss record. For some reason though, I was defend the 242, being rolled for just 98 against Balwyn extremely confident. Not only had we unearthed some and then being comprehensively beaten in a one dayer gold in Milly, but we also promoted Pritesh Goyal and against Bayswater. In fairness the only couple leg spinner Geet Shahani…..let’s not forget Manraj highlights for me, was the emergence of Brodie Eccles Virdi, who displayed some good form also…..and as a fine opening bat/keeper and Brendan King leading there was some good vibes amongst the group. We lost from the front with the ball. the toss and Mt Waverley batted. Our bowling was sensational whether it was the guile of Kingy, or the But something changed by round 4…..we decided to pace of Teshy, or the spin of Saeed and Geeter, Mt change our game plan slightly for the one dayers. Waverley could only accumulate 135 in their 45 overs. There was to be no bash and crash at the start, but a A total we easily accomplished with 10 overs to spare concerted effort to preserve wickets in the hope we thanks to Brodes, Milly and Junior. could get to 20 overs with only the loss of a couple wickets. Jarrod Smith was the important link Another midweek T20 victory against Mt Waverley, here…..he had proven late the previous season to be completed with 10 overs to spare again (Trucks able to bat time and batting at 4, he was set the task to hattrick the highlight) and a comprehensive victory steady the ship and accumulate runs through smart against Endeavour Hills in both the 2 day and T20 running between the wickets and ball placement. fixtures had us flying with 6 wins from our past 7 games. Our batting line up was to be flexible….if an opposition spinner (which most clubs have in Our final game pre-Xmas was against 6th placed Kew particular Ivanhoe in rd 4) was to be brought into the who were captained by ex-BHCC junior Chris Weekes attack then Hayden Rayner was promoted up the and had a couple ex-premier cricketers. We were order…….he didn’t let us down, on most occasions placed around 8th but a win would have us either inside smashing up run a ball innings’ and placing the the top 6 or just outside. Our bowling effort was opposition under great pressure (311 runs at 31 by reasonable on a very good home wicket, with Kew seasons end proved his worth). The past had proven making 175 off their 45 overs, thanks to a 3/28 from that we (particularly 1st XI) were quite ordinary against Milly and 2/33 from Saeed. At 2/32, we were spin bowling, but this entire season, we dominated struggling, but Junior and Brodes stuck to our plan and opposition spin mainly off the back of Truck and slowly accumulated runs getting us 2/93 before losing Somil Bandi’s ability to use their feet and hit well Junior in the 30th over for an excellent 33. Brodes soon straight. followed for a first class 50 and with Truck also out, we were 5/123 with 9 overs to go. But Manny’s little Round 4’s win against Ivanhoe can also be attributed knock of 14 was a little gem as he and your’s truly to our perfectly planned defence of 175 runs. Fair to compiled a better than a run a ball 48 partnership to say our bowling attack was just 12 months prior, see us home with an over to spare…..a satisfying win plying their trade in the twos (other than Kingy and particularly against a couple “verbal” opposition Mohammed Saeed), but rose to the challenge, bowling players! short of length and to our packed off side field. James Pearson and Justin Lampard was purely euphoric!! Whilst Round 5 saw us lose to Coburg, really this game came down to the toss of the coin on a rough old We targeted this game as an opportunity to prove wicket away from home in the Saturday/Sunday ourselves. Winning the toss ensured us the opportunity

Again Brodes and Milly worth to our 1st XI this season. I’m sure we progress provided us with the foundation, followed up by from here as finals aspirants and a truly revered team whirlwind innings’ from Truck and Junior saw us within the comp having beating many “better reach 175. Pressure was well and truly on credentialed teams than us” this season. Probably the Brunswick…..and to be honest they faultered! Kingy only lowlight was having just 3 players playing the again led the way with a superb 2/15 off his 9 overs, entire season…..most players missing a game or two along with Truck 2/20 off 8 but it was Saeed’s 4/41 off for different reasons. Finishing in 7th place with a 7 and 6 win/loss record was encouraging considering preseason Michael Vozzo 1st XI Captain predictions….we undoubtedly surprised many but should have made finals considering our mid to late season form. We can’t be satisfied. MEN’S SECOND XI SEASON REPORT

Many of our players were “forced to grow” this season The Box Hill 2nd Eleven year was full of ups, slight and as stated earlier, create their own shadow. They downs, key learnings and some high level cricket. In did. Kingy, Brodes, Junior, Truck and Saeed were amongst the 13 rounds we played, there was some sensational team efforts, sprinkled with high calibre spoken about for years – this actually leads into our individual efforts. To best look back at the Second 11 next topic; season, I’ll be breaking this report into three areas; Batting Performances, Bowling Performances, and Batting Performances: Tremendous Meltdowns. Immediately, the Box Hill men dropped to the ground, the Endeavour Hill’s players smiled, then skipped to their cars to head home whilst the umpires started asking for their money. Cricket is full of ‘should I’s’ and ‘could I’s’, unfortunately the unknown of whether we would have created an outright victory which would have helped our finals chances is ones which hurts the most from the season.

It’s not so much a Tremendous Meltdown, as much of being subjected to being in the field for 78.2 overs in Croydon whilst they piled on 350 runs. There were little to no highlights with the ball, however our innings was almost a story which would have been

The bowling unit was deep. Fast bowlers – lefties and righties, leggies, offies, meds and Craig Broadley – we’re still not sure what Craig bowls.. Craig was a great pick up for the club this year, with his bustling left handed bowling action constantly keeping batsmen honest. I’m sure when he returned back home to , his mates would have asked ‘How many aussies did you

With 10 wickets to his name for the year, he could have easily had more with a little more luck.

Malvern was controlled superbly by DB with the ball taking 5/24 from his 8 overs. Comte was again in the runs with an excellent 65, well supported by Flinny’s 45*. After a washout in Round 7 – where Comte scored another excellent hundred, Round 8 was when player availability was an issue. With the games being so close to Christmas, many players were away and we again struggled to fill the side. Sam Morris and James Dowland both stepped to lead the side and I thank them for their efforts.

VETERANS XI SEASON REPORT

The Box Hill Vet’s Program entered its third year in season 2018/19. A huge thank you from my point of view to all players for the season. Everyone’s contribution in not As many know, the premise of Vets is inclusion, only playing but helping with set up / pack up for participation and most importantly, a great excuse to home games and quick responses to my emails made reconnect socially and to try and keep somewhat fit. organising the season a breeze. The competitive nature however still kicks in for all of us and once on the park, we are there to win! Thanks also to Dean Whitelaw for captaining and to Peter Lazer who took the reins in Dean’s absence for For season 2018/19, we had 22 players represent the two games. I would also like to extend a thank you to Vet’s team of which 14 played 4 games or more. In a Andrew Blake for his support from a club/committee short season, this ensured we had a relatively stable perspective and to Luke Kukuruzovic for his squad and team every week. As a result, we went administrative support with MyCricket. through the home and away season undefeated with 5 wins and a draw finishing 2 points clear on top. Next season awaits!

There were many highlights over the home and away Steve Flinn season. A few standouts include: Vets Coordinator

- Daniel Upton smashing 43 against Booroondara in Round 1 (four 6s, two 4s). Pete Lazer also scoring a quick 33 with five 4s - and one 6. - Round 2 versus North Balwyn saw Justin Farrow and Daniel Snell retiring on 43 and 40 respectively with sixteen 4s hit between them.

- The Daniel Snell show rolled on in Round 3

with a 43 retired (six 4s, One 6) and a 4 / 6 off 3 overs. - - Another 40 retired from Daniel Snell in Round 4 versus Kew and handy contributions of 33 from Dean Whitelaw and 39 from Andrew Blake ensuring our biggest score for the season finishing at 8 / 192.

Making the finals for the first time in our Vet’s history was a great achievement though unfortunately, we lost quite convincingly in the semi- final against Notting-Hill Brandon Park.

JG CRAIG U/15 REPRESENTATIVE TEAM We then went on to contain Balwyn for 99 with a loss of 8 wickets, our strength was very much in the I would first off like to thank Box Hill for offering depth and accuracy of our bowlers. Many did not get the opportunity of coaching the Craig Shield team as wickets but had some extremely economical figures, it was very much a highlight off my period in among the wickets were Joel Michaelson (2) Jamie Australia and with Box Hill. We first of all played 2 friendly’s one against However lessons were learnt against Mount Brunswick and one against divisional rivals Waverley, on a scorching day and a beautiful deck Croydon. We scraped past the 150,7 down, realistically our devastating 5 wicket hauls but every individual last recognised batting pair at the crease for this contributed to wining us a game, somewhere along game. Ben Kenealy Ben Grlj Unfortunately this was one step too far as we came Luke Cassy out second best, early dot ball pressure looked Max Warburton promising for us as Bayswater were struggling to Brinny Mahadeva score freely, however they absorbed the pressure and Byron Fernandes (wicket Keeper) did not throw wickets away and reached 206 for 4 Sam Heenan with some fantastic batting. All in all, I was extremely pleased to make a grand final for what I’ve been told only the second time in Box Hills history, we did this with a underdog team, the reason for our success was the everyone pitched in, nobody scored magnificent tons or bowled

Michelle Winterton

Michelle came to Box Hill after East Burwood, the club she had played junior cricket at, folded. Michelle debuted here in the 1999/2000 season, playing in both the Under 17 and senior sides. As at the end of this season Michelle has played 282 games for the Club, which is the most games of any female to represent Box Hill. Michelle has represented Box Hill in each of the 1sts, 2nds and 3rds senior teams, with the vast majority of her games played in the premier seconds. Michelle also captained the 2nds in 2014/15 and 2015/16.

Michelle is a great club person, she is loyal, generous and never afraid of a challenge. She is a wonderful person to play cricket with. Michelle also loves a good pun – although I’m not sure whether she enjoys the pun or the groans after delivering them more! Michelle also comes up with some real pearlers sometimes – as her nickname Carpy attests!

In just her third season, Michelle was part of the 3rd XI squad who won a premiership in 2001/02. Michelle has told me that, as 12th player that day, she didn’t feel that she was truly part of the team that won that flag and so she has chased premiership success ever since. Unfortunately, she has not yet attained it and I know that this is a real disappointment and frustration for her. However, Michelle has enjoyed plenty of success at this club in other measures.

Over her almost 20 years at the club, Michelle has amassed 2783 runs and taken 116 wickets at an average of 22.9. These stats are based on MyCricket which do not yet have stats from her first 5 years at the club. However, even based on those incomplete statistics, that is the 7th most wickets by a female at this Club and the 5th most runs by a female at this Club.

Some of the other highlights of Michelle’s playing career include:

• winning the Marja Van der Toorren award, the women’s best and fairest, twice – in 2007/08 and then jointly with her sister Karyn in 2008/09. Just this year she came equal second in the vote count – an indication of her longevity; • taking 7/26 with the ball vs Frankston in the 2nds in 2004/05; • winning the award for the 2nd XI in 2005/06; • winning batting average award for the 3rd XI in 2015/16; and • scoring her maiden in the 3rd XI in 2017/18.

Those achievements, and the timeframe over which her highlights are achieved, perfectly sums up Carpy – she has determination and a drive to get better and achieve new things. And if at first she doesn’t succeed, she will keep trying until she achieves it.

This year, she has had a brilliant season in the 3s. In the T20 comp, she made 310 runs at an average of 62. She was also part of a 190-run opening partnership with Isa White in the game against Wycliff – a new record for the 3s. Her excellent T20 season was recognised when she was selected in the first ever Cricket Victoria Regional Big Bash, which was designed to showcase talent in the community competition. She did our Club proud in representing us in that forum.

Off the field, Michelle has contributed to the club in many ways. Many of you will have seen her working behind the bar after games and club social functions. She has helped the club in this role for over a decade now. As anyone who has chatted to her over the bar knows, Michelle is a great listener. She also enjoys other people’s success, and can commiserate when things don’t go well, which makes her a great friend to many people at this Club.
