  • Uncovering REDD+ Readiness in Mexico: Actors, Discourses and Benefit-Sharing
Uncovering REDD+ readiness in Mexico: Actors, discourses and benefit-sharing PhD Thesis Jovanka Špirić Under the supervision of: Dr. Esteve Corbera (UAB) Dr. Victoria Reyes-García (ICREA-UAB) Dr. Luciana Porter-Bolland (INECOL) PhD Programme in Environmental Science and Technology Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals, ICTA Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, UAB December 2015 Mojoj porodici Abstract Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation, plus conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks (REDD+) is an international policy mechanism that seeks to mitigate climate change, while potentially alleviating poverty and contributing towards biodiversity conservation in developing countries. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) laid the foundations for REDD+ design and implementation in 2005 and the mechanism’s architecture was finalised in 2015. During that period, parties to the UNFCCC debated and developed procedures and guidelines on REDD+ technical and governance issues, including for example how to guarantee the meaningful participation of all relevant stakeholders and how to respect the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities. In parallel, several developing countries, supported by multilateral and bilateral aid, entered the so-called REDD+ readiness phase and started developing national strategies for implementing REDD+ activities through specific policies and actions. This thesis addresses three main issues of concern for REDD+ scholars and practitioners using Mexico’s readiness process as an example. First, it analyses the design and legitimacy of the institutional arrangements established by the Mexican government to draft the REDD+ national strategy. Second, it identifies the REDD+ discourses mobilised by the actors involved in the country’s REDD+ readiness process and it highlights how such discourses are reflected in national policy documents, thus shedding light on dominant ideas and narratives permeating into the national strategy.

  • Pietro Aaron on Musica Plana: a Translation and Commentary on Book I of the Libri Tres De Institutione Harmonica (1516)
Pietro Aaron on musica plana: A Translation and Commentary on Book I of the Libri tres de institutione harmonica (1516) Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Matthew Joseph Bester, B.A., M.A. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Graeme M. Boone, Advisor Charles Atkinson Burdette Green Copyright by Matthew Joseph Bester 2013 Abstract Historians of music theory long have recognized the importance of the sixteenth- century Florentine theorist Pietro Aaron for his influential vernacular treatises on practical matters concerning polyphony, most notably his Toscanello in musica (Venice, 1523) and his Trattato della natura et cognitione de tutti gli tuoni di canto figurato (Venice, 1525). Less often discussed is Aaron’s treatment of plainsong, the most complete statement of which occurs in the opening book of his first published treatise, the Libri tres de institutione harmonica (Bologna, 1516). The present dissertation aims to assess and contextualize Aaron’s perspective on the subject with a translation and commentary on the first book of the De institutione harmonica. The extensive commentary endeavors to situate Aaron’s treatment of plainsong more concretely within the history of music theory, with particular focus on some of the most prominent treatises that were circulating in the decades prior to the publication of the De institutione harmonica. This includes works by such well-known theorists as Marchetto da Padova, Johannes Tinctoris, and Franchinus Gaffurius, but equally significant are certain lesser-known practical works on the topic of plainsong from around the turn of the century, some of which are in the vernacular Italian, including Bonaventura da Brescia’s Breviloquium musicale (1497), the anonymous Compendium musices (1499), and the anonymous Quaestiones et solutiones (c.1500).

  • Understanding and Improving the Identification of Somatic Variants
Understanding and Improving the Identification of Somatic Variants Vinaya Vijayan Dissertation submitted to the faculty of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy In Genetics, Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Chair: Liqing Zhang Christopher Franck Lenwood S. Heath Xiaowei Wu August 12th, 2016 Blacksburg, VA, USA Keywords: Somatic variants, Somatic variant callers, Somatic point mutations, Short tandem repeat variation, Lung squamous cell carcinoma Understanding and Improving the Identification of Somatic Variants Vinaya Vijayan ABSTRACT It is important to understand the entire spectrum of somatic variants to gain more insight into mutations that occur in different cancers for development of better diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic tools. This thesis outlines our work in understanding somatic variant calling, improving the identification of somatic variants from whole genome and whole exome platforms and identification of biomarkers for lung cancer. Integrating somatic variants from whole genome and whole exome platforms poses a challenge as variants identified in the exonic regions of the whole genome platform may not be identified on the whole exome platform and vice-versa. Taking a simple union or intersection of the somatic variants from both platforms would lead to inclusion of many false positives (through union) and exclusion of many true variants (through intersection). We develop the first framework to improve the identification of somatic variants on whole genome and exome platforms using a machine learning approach by combining the results from two popular somatic variant callers. Testing on simulated and real data sets shows that our framework identifies variants more accurately than using only one somatic variant caller or using variants from only one platform.

CARING FOR YOUR FAVORITE PLACES: Protecting Forest & Human Health at Cady Hill By Kristen Sharpless, Executive Director On a walk around Cady Hill Forest in early October, I was Cady Hill Forest was purchased and conserved by Stowe Land delighted to encounter flocks of songbirds busily pecking Trust (SLT) in 2012, allowing for the expansion of the existing for insects, stunning fall colors on full display, and several 60-acre Macutchan Town Forest by 258 acres. Now owned by mountain bikers enjoying the leaf-carpeted trails. the Town of Stowe and best known for its world-class, multi-use and mountain biking trail network maintained by the Stowe But what was most striking was what was missing. Trails Partnership, Cady Hill Forest is still at its heart just that: The thousands of invasive, Japanese barberry plants that had a forest. During early monitoring visits and assessments, SLT carpeted portions of the forest several years ago were gone. staff noticed that an extensive infestation of Japanese barberry In their place were riots of white pine seedlings, thickets of covering about 36 acres was spreading from the powerline blackberry, and scattered native tree seedlings and other corridor that runs through the property into Cady Hill’s forest.
