George Capen Says.· During the past few days, I have analyzed this year's Alumni Fund, now at 33,500. Frankly, while I am not disheartened, the results so far are not encouraging. When the National Alumni Association accepted on behal f of all the alumni a goal of $50,000, it was done because we knew that all alumni realize the importance to Trinity of an outstanding faculty. We knew, too, that a successful campaign would depend on these two factors: ( 1) Increased contributions from those alumni who have given in the past, and ( 2) contributions from the large number of alumni who had not contributed previously. The increases are just not coming through, and the rate of new contributors is very disappointing. However, a cheering trend is the fine showing of our younger alumni, those of the Classes of '49, '50, and '51. I know that Trinity alumni are interested in the faculty both because of the importance of good teaching at the college and also in recognition of their own personal appreciation of the men still at Trinity who taught them. But we are going to have to do a lot better in this Alumni Fund if the increases in faculty salaries given last Sep tember are to be covered.

  • Pietro Aaron on Musica Plana: a Translation and Commentary on Book I of the Libri Tres De Institutione Harmonica (1516)
Pietro Aaron on musica plana: A Translation and Commentary on Book I of the Libri tres de institutione harmonica (1516) Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Matthew Joseph Bester, B.A., M.A. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Graeme M. Boone, Advisor Charles Atkinson Burdette Green Copyright by Matthew Joseph Bester 2013 Abstract Historians of music theory long have recognized the importance of the sixteenth- century Florentine theorist Pietro Aaron for his influential vernacular treatises on practical matters concerning polyphony, most notably his Toscanello in musica (Venice, 1523) and his Trattato della natura et cognitione de tutti gli tuoni di canto figurato (Venice, 1525). Less often discussed is Aaron’s treatment of plainsong, the most complete statement of which occurs in the opening book of his first published treatise, the Libri tres de institutione harmonica (Bologna, 1516). The present dissertation aims to assess and contextualize Aaron’s perspective on the subject with a translation and commentary on the first book of the De institutione harmonica. The extensive commentary endeavors to situate Aaron’s treatment of plainsong more concretely within the history of music theory, with particular focus on some of the most prominent treatises that were circulating in the decades prior to the publication of the De institutione harmonica. This includes works by such well-known theorists as Marchetto da Padova, Johannes Tinctoris, and Franchinus Gaffurius, but equally significant are certain lesser-known practical works on the topic of plainsong from around the turn of the century, some of which are in the vernacular Italian, including Bonaventura da Brescia’s Breviloquium musicale (1497), the anonymous Compendium musices (1499), and the anonymous Quaestiones et solutiones (c.1500).

TRAVELTHE HARTFORD COURANT WWW.CTNOW.COM SUNDAY, JUNE 16, 2002 SECTION F THE LILY POND, below, and the stonework, right, grace the grounds of Gillette Castle in East Haddam. The state, which bought the castle for $30,000 in 1943, began an $11.5 million restoration in October 1999. The landmark reopened Memorial Day. Under the new roof are refurbished or new hand-carved banisters, wood floors, ceilings, heating system and carpeting. CONNECTICUT'S CASTLE REDUX PHOTOS BY BOB MACDONNELL / THE HARTFORD COUF MOUNTAIN LAURELS in full bloom, above, point the way to the Gillette Castle entrance. Below, a new bridge stretches along the trails of the 18 4-acre state park in East Haddam. Actor William Gillette signed the castle, built as his dream home between 1914 and 1919. By JIM SHEA COURANT STAFF WRITER n his will, William Gillette instructed that upon his death his beloved home not be sold "to some blithering saphead." While one might argue that the state of I Connecticut does, or does not, ordinarily meet the criteria, in this instance it is probably safe to say Gillette would be pleased with the owner and the job it has done in protecting and preserving his medieval digs. Since buying Gillette Castle for $30,000 in 1943, the state has undertaken several restorations of the 14,000-square-foot dwelling, the largest and most comprehensive of which is just winding down. The popular East Haddam tourist attraction — drawing 340,000 visitors in 1997 — was closed to the public in September 1998 because of extensive leaking.
