2 ForEword

Our State Government and Surf Life Saving SA share the vision of building safer, healthier communities. South Australians are blessed to live in a vibrant society and a clean environment. Our natural landscape offers countless opportunities to enjoy a pristine environment, particularly our beaches.

Thanks to the tireless efforts and vigilance of our surf lifesavers, the leisure time we spend at the beach is as safe as is possible. While we compete, relax and enjoy South Australia’s many beaches, surf lifesavers quietly protect our personal safety.

The members of Surf Life Saving SA deliver emergency services, first aid, , training, officiating and coaching, education programs and surf sports.

Surf Life Saving SA helps build healthy communities. Since 2002, we have invested more than $10.2 million in Surf Life Saving facilities for South Australia. From 2014/15 this will increase to annual funding of $2 million for upgrades to Surf Life Saving facilities. Through the Community Emergency Services Fund, we also contribute toward shark and beach patrols.

Surf Life Saving SA also benefits from our Government’s Sport and Recreation Sustainability Program grants. The sport of also provides local, national and international competition opportunities for more than 9,000 members through Nippers, Juniors, Seniors and Masters events and carnivals. I understand that junior Surf Lifesaving participation has tripled during the past decade. Surf Lifesaving is a wonderful way to grow a child’s confidence, understanding, independence and skills in aquatic environments.

The summer of 2015 will mark a new era for the iconic State Government supported vacation water awareness program, VACSWIM SA. For the first time, Surf Life Saving SA will work directly with the Government to facilitate the delivery of the program at 41 beach locations throughout South Australia. This is an exciting change for the program and creates a far stronger connection between VACSWIM SA participants and local Surf Life Saving Clubs.

On behalf of the South Australian Government and the hundreds rescued each year by Surf Lifesavers across the State, I offer my sincere thanks for the valuable contribution Surf Life Saving SA makes to community wellbeing, and safety.

Jay Weatherill Premier of South Australia

8 Presidents Report

It is with immense pride that we present the Annual Report for another highly successful lifesaving season.

Our movement continues to go from strength to strength and our growing popularity has seen participation increase by over 18%. We have now passed 9,000 members, which includes a record number of Nippers.

As an emergency service we put thousands of patrolling members on the beach. From Whyalla to Robe our volunteers performed 73,150 patrol hours, 12,545 preventative actions and they treated 1,220 first aid cases. Critically, we performed 181 rescues. Without our skilled and dedicated volunteers it could have been a tragic summer for many South Australian families.

Our patrol statistics tell a powerful story, however they don’t take into account the huge effort that takes place ‘back of beach’. Thousands of our members give up countless hours in their roles as administrators, trainers, assessors, coaches, age managers or simply cooking the BBQ on Saturday afternoons.

It has also been a big season for Surf Sports with 44 events being conducted throughout the year. No longer confined to the summer months, our competition season goes virtually all year and includes pool events, IRB racing, open ocean events and of course the iconic surf lifesaving Carnivals.

The 2013/14 season saw the introduction of seven separate State Championships Awards and our congratulations must go to Grange SLSC as the overall point score winners.

I would like to thank all of the coaches and officials who support our athletes throughout the year.

Behind our great movement is a network of vibrant community hubs. At the start of the season the State Government announced a significant increase in funding for Surf Life Saving in South Australia. Over the next eight years the Government will invest an additional $10 million in the Club Rebuild Program. This will see us halve the time it will take to finish the remaining 10 clubs. It will also ensure we are well prepared to meet the needs of the communities we serve well into the future.

I would like to pay tribute to our outgoing CEO Elaine Farmer. Elaine has led our organisation for a remarkable 27 years and through her dedication and professionalism she has left an outstanding legacy for Surf Life Saving in this State.

In turn I would like to warmly welcome Clare Harris to the role. Clare comes to us with strong corporate and commercial acumen and she is already having a significant impact on the growth of the organisation.

To my fellow Board Members I thank you for your passion and professionalism in driving our strategic plan forward.

Finally, to the fantastic red and yellow army, you are the heart and soul of one of the greatest humanitarian organisations in Australia. Everyday your selfless service wins you the respect, admiration and gratitude of the public. Thank you.

John Baker President

9 2014 SURF LIFE SAVING ANNUAL REPORT To the fantastic red and yellow army, You are the heart and soul of one of the greatest humanitarian organisations in Australia. Everyday your selfless service wins you the respect, admiration and gratitude of the public. Thank you.

10 The increased funding over the next eight years will see our Surf Clubs provide strong emergency services support, but also strong club rooms and services for our growth in membership and junior programs such as nippers.

11 2014 SURF LIFE SAVING ANNUAL REPORT CEO Report

Having joined Surf Life Saving SA in April 2014 I am delighted to be writing my first annual report as CEO.

The last 6 months has seen the implementation of a new strategic plan and organisational structure to best meet the needs of the business over the coming years. Key strategic priorities of a Sustainable Business, Stakeholder Relationships, a Healthy and Safe Community and Saving Lives will formulate our focus.

There is no question that Surf Life Saving SA has entered a period of change and it is exciting to be able to deliver this as the ‘new’ CEO. Many challenges lay ahead of us around the commercial environment both at a State and National level; however we have a strong team in place and through hard work and dedication we will progress through this.

I would like to acknowledge and thank the South Australian Government for their continued support and increased funding to upgrade our Surf Life Saving Clubs in South Australia. The increased funding over the next eight (8) years will see our Surf Clubs provide strong emergency services support, but also strong club rooms and services for our growth in membership and junior programs such as Nippers.

Thanks must also go to our two major stakeholders, South Australian Fire and Emergency Services Commission (SAFECOM), led by David Place and Office for Recreation and Sport, led by Paul Anderson. I personally thank both David and Paul for their support and guidance in my role as CEO.

With the assistance of Surf Life Saving Australia and the Surf Life Saving Foundation I thank Greg Nance and his team who provide valuable funds and support towards our services in South Australia.

Thanks to all of our volunteers and Club Presidents for their efforts and time committed to the Surf Life Saving movement.

Finally thanks must go to the SLSSA Board, led by John Baker who as a volunteer board put in a tremendous amount of time towards the betterment of Surf Life Saving in SA.

Clare Harris CEO
