Stockton SLSC 108th Annual Report 17 STOCKTON SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB INC ABN 81 952 288 466 Notes to the Financial Statements For the year ended 31 May 2016

Note 1: Summary of Significant Accounting Policies

This financial report is a special purpose financial report prepared in order to satisfy the financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporations Act of New South Wales. The committee has determined that the association is not a reporting entity. The financial report has been prepared on an accruals basis and is based on historical costs and does not take into account changing money values or, except where specifically stated, current valuations of non-current assets. The following significant accounting policies, which are consistent with the previous period unless otherwise stated, have been adopted in the preparation of this financial report.

(a) Cash and Cash Equivalents Cash and cash equivalents include cash on hand, deposits held at call with banks, and other short-term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less.

(b) Revenue and Other Income Revenue is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable after taking into account any trade discounts and volume rebates allowed. For this purpose, deferred consideration is not discounted to present values when recognising revenue. Interest revenue is recognised using the effective interest rate method, which for floating rate financial assets is the rate inherent in the instrument. Dividend revenue is recognised when the right to receive a dividend has been established. Grant and donation income is recognised when the entity obtains control over the funds, which is generally at the time of receipt. All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST).

(c) Goods and Services Tax (GST) Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is not recoverable from the Tax Office. In these circumstances, the GST is recognised as part of the cost of acquisition of the asset or as part of an item of the expense. Receivables and payables in the assets and liabilities statement are shown inclusive of GST.

(d) Change of Accounting Policy Previously equipment and assets purchased were written off in the period the asset was acquired. The committee has determined that in order to present financial information in a manner comparable to other surf lifesaving clubs that equipment and assets, acquired during this financial year and in future periods, will be capitalised and written off over the expected useful life of the asset. The following depreciation rates have been determined: - Building (clubhouse) Improvements and Fixtures 10% Prime Cost (straight line) - Plant & Equipment - Gym, Office and Lifesaving 20% - 25% Prime Cost - Plant & Equipment - Surf Sports 25% Prime Cost

What a great season 2015/2016 was. and beach skills. This all leads to confidence and fun We welcomed many new faces and on the beach and in the ocean. many new families. It is the volunteers that make the Nippers Program run so smoothly. It was a big learning curve going from Club Captain to the Director of JAC. 30 Stockton SLSC 108th Annual Report Apart from the above nippers we had a lot of other nippers that made the top 10 in most carnivals, but overall they all competed with their friends, had fun, improved their placings and made Stockton proud at the above carnivals and some nippers also competed at the Sydney Water carnivals as well. I haven’t listed their names as I do not want to offend anybody if I forgot somebody.

Thank you to Daniel Danuser for looking after our equipment this season. He ran a tight ship which was great to see. In terms of gear and equipment, we will be purchasing another 10 Demon boards thanks to a generous grant from NCIG. With regards to training, Warren and I will be looking not just at board training, but an emphasis on all-round fitness and beach work along with swim and board skills.

A highlight of the season was on the 14th February this year we initiated the “Heads of the Harbour” carnival (which will now be a yearly event) whereby Newcastle, Nobbies and Stockton competed in the regular Nippers event earning points in all of the events including the ironman event (sponsored by Newcastle Chiropractic). After the tallying of the points a perpetual trophy was awarded and this year’s winner was the home club - Stockton. It was a great day/event and we are looking forward to another day of competition and camaraderie next season.

This season we had 5 boys and 1 girl (Blair Johnston, Jayden Robinson, Jackson Saunders, Lachlan Summers, Jed Spruce and Jade Hughes) graduate to participate in weekend patrols by gaining their Surf Rescue Certificate. This is integral to what we stand for in surf lifesaving, and for the U14’s, recognition for the many skills learnt over their years as Nippers. Many thanks to the Under 14 Age Manager Penny Holt and Brendan who gave them the support to attain the skills required to attain this level of competency.

And last but not least, a big thank you to the Life Members and M.O.L.E.S for their help and support throughout the season. This is what makes a great club.

Once again I believe this season was again a success, and as a committee we will continue to evaluate what we do so as to provide different strategies and learning tools to keep the children engaged whilst learning valuable skills. A lot of exciting things are planned for next season.

See you all in 2016/2017. Joey Dryden Junior Activities Coordinator

Stockton SLSC 108th Annual Report 39 Australia Day Newcastle Harbour Swim 2016

Weather and water conditions were more favourable again this year and we could leave the ‘Bruce Era’ behind us as Oceanswims Australia put it on their website.

With the support of Newcastle City Council, the Port of Newcastle, Road and Maritime Services, Hunter Water, The Newcastle Herald, Eyeline Swimwear, Endura Sports Nutrition, the Hunter Branch of Surf Life Saving Australia, Nobby’s and Newcastle Surf Clubs and the professional contributions of Paul Humphries of H-Events, Paul Ellercamp of Oceanswims Australia and Ben Lecce for the Sound and PA system, we successfully held the 21st edition of this unique Novocastrian event.

As it turned out our swim and the Hunter Branch’s Ducks 4 Dollars were the only official events on Australia Day on the Harbour which no doubt added to our spectator numbers and is something we should try and maximize even more next year.

Over 300 swimmers took part in either the Single or Double Crossings of the Harbour. $500 prize money for the fastest male and female $250 for second, $100 for third) guaranteed us a quality field with competitors from as far as Brisbane, Canberra and even Victoria.

We made approximately $5,000 from the event which is a great ‘return on investment’ in terms of hours spent by members of the Club and the money raised. Our profit was somewhat reduced however because of the cancellation of the event last year and generous offer to ‘roll over’ entries and honour early commitments with a T-shirt.

40 Stockton SLSC 108th Annual Report The minimum age for the Double Crossing was raised to 14 years of age. 12-13 year old kids could participate in the Single Crossing however and win prizes in the boys and girls categories. There were no other categories or prizes however as this part of the Australia Day Harbour Swim was a social swim as opposed to a ‘race’. (The individual swim times nevertheless were recorded and posted on the web site of H-events).

In contrast the Double Crossing had age and gender categories and prizes for the best three of each group which were very well received and appreciated.

I would like to thank all members and volunteers that contributed on the day, the past event organizers (Sue Crawford, Noel Burns, Ken Grainger, Trevor Upton, Roz McMahon, Callan Nickerson and others), as well as the Board and Executive for their support during the preparation of the Australia Day Harbour Swim 2016.

Hopefully we can repeat it all again in 2017 for the 22nd edition and again showcase Stockton Surf Club to the local community … and offer ‘a great way to start to the day, on Australia Day’!
