The direct air support during the Battle of the Java Sea, as seen from the allied side (2015, revised May-June 2016, revised July-August 2016) © Dr. P.C. Boer Introduction [1] After a failed air campaign fought in the period of 18 February up to and including 27 February 1942 the allied forces in Java, former Netherlands East Indies, had only one instrument left to try to prevent a Japanese invasion of Java, the Combined Striking Force (CSF) of the combined allied navies. The battle of the Java Sea between the CSF, a naval squadron consisting of cruisers and destroyers from The Netherlands, United States, United Kingdom and Australia commanded by Rear-Admiral K.W.F.M. Doorman and a Japanese war fleet led by Rear-Admiral Takagi Takeo on 27 February 1942 is well known, as is its outcome. Less well known is the fact that during the larger part of the so- called day fight of the battle the allied air forces of the joint combined Java Air Command (JAC) succeeded in keeping up a local air superiority with 15 fighters from Ngoro in eastern Java. The number of 15 consisted of 10 Curtiss P-40Es of 17 Pursuit Squadron Provisional, 17 PS (P), of the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) and five Brewster 339 fighters of the Militaire Luchtvaart KNIL (ML/KNIL, Army Aviation Corps of the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army) detached to this squadron from Andir in western Java. Also little known is the activities of the allied and Japanese cruiser reconnaissance and artillery spotting planes. -

The release of the Haunebu kit will be an exciting event that will reveal a darker saga in the history of spacecraft with all the elements of WW2... occultism, inter- planetary technology, secrecy and mystique combined in one. We have decided to try and stay at the new meeting venue for AMG's 1:48 SCALE HAWKER HART our monthly get togethers unless a better opportunity presents Mk.1 itself. Essentially we are at home. looking for models with a direct association to an event that re- sulted in ‘a mention in despatches’ or higher award for bravery such as a medal or bar to a medal. NEXT MEETING We have also planned out a programme activities for the next Tuesday 18th February 2020 from few months. 8pm This month’s meeting theme will be the model with the most in- Freemans Bay Community Hall, teresting back story. Emerson Fittipaldi President of the FIA Drivers’ Commissions Emerson Fittipaldi is President of the FIA Drivers’ Commissions and a member of the FIA World Motor Sport Council since 2012. He was a former automobile racing driver who won both the Formula One World Championship (1972 and 1974) and the Indianapolis 500 (1989 and 1993) twice each and the CART Championship once (1989). Emerson started his career at the age of 14, racing motorcycles. He moved onto racing karts at 16 and won the Brazilian Kart Championship in 1965. After two seasons in Brazilian Formula V, he became the Champion at the age of 21. He moved in Europe (1969) and has been engaged by the Jim Russell Driving School Formula Three team. At the same year, he won nine F3 races and became the Champion. Between 1970 and 1982, Emerson ran several Championships and won the South American Formula Ford (1970), the Brazilian Cup Sports Cars (1971), the South America Formula 2 (1972) and the Brazilian Super Kart (1982). Emerson joined the Formula One Team Lotus in 1970. He started to be the 3rd driver and scored a 4th place in the German Grand Prix. During the next season, he became a regular seat holder. In 1972, he won five of 11 races and won the Formula One Championship and became, at the age of 25, the youngest champion in Formula One history. With McLaren team, he renewed his Champion’s title in 1974. Emerson decided to race in Indy Car in 1984. He won for the first time in Indy 500 in 1985. -
