Formula 1 Race Car Performance Improvement by Optimization of the Aerodynamic Relationship Between the Front and Rear Wings
The Pennsylvania State University The Graduate School College of Engineering FORMULA 1 RACE CAR PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT BY OPTIMIZATION OF THE AERODYNAMIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE FRONT AND REAR WINGS A Thesis in Aerospace Engineering by Unmukt Rajeev Bhatnagar © 2014 Unmukt Rajeev Bhatnagar Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science December 2014 The thesis of Unmukt R. Bhatnagar was reviewed and approved* by the following: Mark D. Maughmer Professor of Aerospace Engineering Thesis Adviser Sven Schmitz Assistant Professor of Aerospace Engineering George A. Lesieutre Professor of Aerospace Engineering Head of the Department of Aerospace Engineering *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School ii Abstract The sport of Formula 1 (F1) has been a proving ground for race fanatics and engineers for more than half a century. With every driver wanting to go faster and beat the previous best time, research and innovation in engineering of the car is really essential. Although higher speeds are the main criterion for determining the Formula 1 car’s aerodynamic setup, post the San Marino Grand Prix of 1994, the engineering research and development has also targeted for driver’s safety. The governing body of Formula 1, i.e. Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) has made significant rule changes since this time, primarily targeting car safety and speed. Aerodynamic performance of a F1 car is currently one of the vital aspects of performance gain, as marginal gains are obtained due to engine and mechanical changes to the car. Thus, it has become the key to success in this sport, resulting in teams spending millions of dollars on research and development in this sector each year. -

This is especially evident in recent years. The 1996 “split” between the Indy Racing League (IRL; later, the IndyCar Series) and Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART; later the Champ Car World Series) severely hurt the sport. Following the split there was a well-documented decline in fan interest from which the sport has not recovered. Less understood, however, is that under the Indy Racing League the Indianapolis 500, the premier event in open-wheeled racing in the United States, became more competitive. Ironically, while fan interest decreased in the Indy Racing League era, the quality of racing increased. The increased competition associated with the Indy Racing League is a historically significant development that bodes well for the future of the sport. -

This paper begins with how Formula 1 racing began and how race cars were designed and looked. Then each decade of racing will be discussed and remarks on major advancements and changes in aerodynamics. -
An All Carbon Fiber Supercar Like No Other Fittipaldi EF7 Vision Gran Turismo by Pininfarina Unveiled
COMUNICATO STAMPA An all carbon fiber supercar like no other Fittipaldi EF7 Vision Gran Turismo by Pininfarina unveiled F1 racing legend and Indy 500 champion, Emerson Fittipaldi, unveiled his dream track car, the much-anticipated Fittipaldi EF7 Vision Gran Turismo by Pininfarina, at the Geneva Motor Show today. The ultra-light, all carbon fiber supercar fuses the vision of F1 and Indy Car racing champion Fittipaldi, iconic Italian design company Pininfarina and race-bred German engineering firm HWA AG, and fulfills Fittipaldi’s dream to produce a car with fierce track- racing capabilities, for drivers of all skill levels. “I have tried for years to explain to others what it truly feels like to be behind the steering wheel of a championship racecar. There is adrenaline and elation all rolled into an awe- inspiring inner fulfillment that leaves you craving for more. This is what our dream team created in the EF7 Vision Gran Turismo by Pininfarina,” said Fittipaldi of the first car to be released under the Fittipaldi Motors marque. Revealing a commandingly sleek design underscored by an extraordinary power-to- weight ratio, the supercar’s design theme – that of a shark, inspired by Emerson – finds astounding aerodynamic expression in the vehicle’s flowing, aggressive lines; assertive yet incredibly beautiful and pure; and a balance between emotion and efficiency typical of Pininfarina’s design work. “The EF7 is an exciting car that embodies Pininfarina’s DNA in terms of style and innovation, Emerson’s championship race experience and HWA AG’s flawless engineering skills. Our collective team was able to turn a dream into a driving machine,” enthused Pininfarina Chairman Paolo Pininfarina. -

REGISTRO ITALIANO ALFA ROMEO (R.I.A.R.) International Club Il Presidente
Fondato nel 1962 REGISTRO ITALIANO ALFA ROMEO (R.I.A.R.) International Club Il Presidente REGISTERED LETTER Arese, 26 October 2016 Newsletter no. 268 Dear Members, 2016 for RIAR under the flag of the Targa Florio – a year started with the event in Arese and ended with the trade fair in Padova. 20020 Arese (MI) Arese 20020 www.riar.it Our usual presence at the fair was in fact one more way of paying tribute to the - - history of the Targa Florio, which this year celebrated its 110th year of life. Alfa Romeo - second only to Porsche with its 11 victories - conquered as many as 10 absolute victories in this legendary Sicilian race, one of the most ancient and prestigious motor race in the world. But certainly, it was Alfa and the audacity of its drivers, which, particularly from the ‘20s to the ‘40s, created the extraordinary legend and @alfaromeo.com @alfaromeo.com enthusiasm around the Milanese brand. And the RIAR, as you may remind, set off Viale Luraghi, snc snc Luraghi, Viale – remembering its men and cars in March of this year at the Museum in Arese. The ACI (Automobile Club Italia) then invited four of our prestigious and exceptional vehicles to Palermo and Floriopoli in May for the Targa Speed event, together with the most registroalfa famous drivers of the past, “captained” by Jean Todt, President of FIA, to give life to the suggestive celebration of the one hundred years of Targa races. E.mail: - FCA Group Italy Italy FCAGroup – In late June, we were once again in Sicily with the rally “The Sicily of the Gattopardi on the Hundredth Anniversary of the Targa Florio”, and at last in Padova, once again invited by the ACI to the institutional prestige of its stand, where we exhibited two 44428183 important and very significant vehicles in the history of Alfa at the Targa: the RL TF from 1924, and the 33 TT 12 Fernet Branca, precisely the cars of the first and last victory of Alfa Romeo on the Madonie Mountains. -
