July 2017 Volume 4 Issue 7 Editorial Comments: It’s the middle of summer here but the fun goes on. Check out our Calendar! Alfa Romeo Selection of the Month for July 2017. Car Name: Alfa at the 2017 Mille Migia Article: Alfa Romeo Museum at 2017 Mille Miglia Curtesy: Sports Car Digest The 90th edition of the Mille Miglia, “the most beautiful traveling museum in the world” as it was aptly called by Enzo Ferrari, recently ended on the finish line of Viale Venezia in Brescia. Alfa Romeo again finished strong at the 2017 Mille Miglia, with two models on the podium: the 6C 1750 GS (1931) and the 6C 1500 Gran Sport Zagato (1933). The Milan-based automaker still holds the competition record for the most race victories, with 11, including seven in a row from 1932 to 1938. The Alfa Romeo Historic Museum in Arese, Italy sent several of its crown jewels to participate in the 2017 Mille Miglia: the 6C 1750 Gran Sport (1930), the 6C 2300 Mille Miglia (1938) and the 1900 Super Sprint (1955). They were joined on the start line by a Lancia Aprilia (1937) and a Lancia Aurelia B24 (1955). Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Sport (1930) – All eyes were on the 6C 1750 Gran Sport, the legendary model in which Tazio Nuvolari and Giovanni Battista Guidotti won the Brescia-based race in 1930. That was the race of the legendary “overtaking in the dark” episode when Nuvolari achieved the unprecedented feat of averaging 100 km/h over the entire course. The bodywork was created by Milan atelier Zagato.

The FD0”X” Fittipaldi Years - Innovation despite the results by Darren Galpin When one thinks of the Copersucar Fittipaldi FD cars, the usual reaction is to dismiss them, and to marvel at the fact the Emerson Fittipaldi could waste his last years in F1 in such cars. But as usual, there is more to this tale than meets the eyes, and more than is usually reported. The build-up In 1969, Emerson Fittipaldi was in Britain pursuing a career in Formula Ford. Needing a bit of a help with his car, he raised some cash and asked a friend, Richard Divila, to come over and give him a hand. Richard Divila, a Brazilian national who had an English mother, was a technical graduate who was planning to do a PhD in automotive design and had a background in aerospace. He went to England planning to spend two weeks helping out Emerson, and embarked on a lifelong career instead. Emerson’s brother Wilson also moved to England, and together they set up their own team to enter into F3 and F2, Richard becoming “team manager, engineer, secretary, truckie, mechanic, chief cook and bottle washer”, progressing through various F3 and F2 Lotus’s, and acting as Emerson’s private engineer in F1. It was a busy time, as they were running almost every weekend. If they weren’t running in F1 or F2, they ran in sportscars and GT’s instead. By the time Wilson moved on to Bernie Ecclestone’s Brabham, Divila was busy modifying the Fittipaldi team cars to what they called “Fittipaldi spec”.

  • Who Is the Best Formula 1 Driver? an Economic Approach to Evaluating Talent
ECONOMIC ANALYSIS & POLICY, VOL. 39 NO. 3, DECEMBER 2009 Who Is The Best Formula 1 Driver? An Economic Approach to Evaluating Talent Reiner Eichenberger* and David Stadelmann Department of Economics, University Freiburg, CH-1700 Fribourg, Switzerland (Email: [email protected]) Abstract: Who is the best formula 1 driver? Until today it was impossible to answer this question because the observable performance of a driver depends both on his talent and the quality of his cars. In this paper, we for the first time separate driver talent from car quality by econometrically analyzing data covering 57 years of Formula 1 racing. Our estimates also control for the number of drivers finishing, technical breakdowns and many other variables that influence race results. While Michael Schumacher is often believed to be the best driver, he is overtaken by Juan Manuel Fangio and Jim Clark. I. INTRODUCTION Who is currently the best Formula 1 driver? Who was the best Formula 1 driver in history? And what about the Australian drivers? Many people are more interested in such questions than in the very important research puzzles commonly dealt with in economic journals. Fortunately, these questions can be answered thanks to the tools used by economists. A Formula 1 driver is fast, if he is talented and has a good car. Moreover, his racing success depends on a large number of additional factors. Individual success is determined to a large extent by factors such as the competitors’ talents and the quality of their cars, the number of competitors in a race, weather conditions during the race, and pure racing luck.

1967 / 1976 Three Ferraris, two 330 P4s and a 412 P secure the first three places in the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona Ferrari’s refusal to agree to sell the company to Ford in 1963 gave rise to an intense sporting rivalry, with endurance races serving as the backdrop for the many duels between these two giants. In the 1963, ‘64 and ‘65 editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Ferrari dominated the podium. However, in 1966, it was the turn of the more powerful Fords. The two headed to Daytona in early 1967 for the first round of the International Constructors’ Championship (as the World Sport Championship was renamed for two years), with two separate classifications for GTs and prototypes. In order to close the gap on Ford, Ferrari spent the winter of 1966 working hard in Maranello. The new 330 P4 was designed by Mauro Forghieri, with a number of P3 models being updated too, becoming 330 P3/ P4s. The abbreviation 412 P identified the customer version of the latter vehicle. Intended for use by private teams, it lacked a number of strategic components such as the injection system, which was replaced by normal carburettors. The 330 P4 boasted sophisticated aerodynamics, developed in the wind tunnels at Pininfarina and at the Polytechnic in Stuttgart, Germany, the city where both Mercedes and Porsche are based. The P4 had a lower Cd than its predecessors, with greater downforce and a very low nose section. The 4-litre, 450 hp V12 engine featured double overhead camshafts and 3 valves per cylinder.
