Dale Lafollette's Vintage Motorphoto Dale LaFollette’s Vintage MOTORPHOTO Summer 2002 Most of the photos in this catalog are single images only, meaning that I have only one of them and I do not own the negatives. I do not sell copy photos unless they are of a really rare subject and then this fact is mentioned in the description. Most photos by known photographers have the photographer's stamp on the reverse and many have writing on them in the form of a description and\or cropping notes. No claims are made for photo authorship unless I have conclusive proof, therefore many of the photos listed under ANONYMOUS could very well have been taken by well known photographers. It is probable that most photos were the only one, or one of few printed from the negative. All photos are black and white unless "color" in mentioned. All photos are printed on fiber based paper unless RC to denote "resin coated" is in the description (see legend). None of the photos listed are mounted permanently (unless specifically noted) so you will be free to use or display them as you wish. These photos are being sold as collector's items, many may be copyrighted so you would reproduce them at your own risk. AUTOGRAPHED means that the person pictured has signed the photo or described article, SIGNED means signed by the photographer. To understand the dimensioning system PLEASE NOTE THE LEGEND BELOW!! LEGEND: ZZ= 12 x 16; XX=11 x 14; AA = 9.5 X 12; A = 8 X 10; B = 6.5 X 8.5; C = 5 X 7 RC =RESIN COATED PAPER PL = PRINTED LATER, ALL PHOTOS NOT MARKED PL ARE CONSIDERED VINTAGE. E-Mail me and I will send scans of most anything in this catalog! By September I will have been in Europe four times in the preceding year and let me be the first to announce that the rest of the world has discovered vintage racing photography! Supply and demand are driving prices higher and higher but I have kept the prices stable in this catalog so let’s enjoy them while we can! The day before yesterday 166 Notes 175 Images 191 Introduction and acknowledgements POLITICS AND SPORT are by definition incompatible, and they're combustible when mixed. The 1930s proved that: the Winter Olympics in Germany in 1936, when the President of the International Olympic Committee threatened to cancel the Games unless the anti-semitic posters were all taken down now, whatever Adolf Hitler decrees; the 1936 Summer Games in Berlin and Hitler's look of utter disgust when Jesse Owens, a negro, won the 100 metres; the World Heavyweight title fight in 1938 between Joe Louis, a negro, and Germany's Max Schmeling which carried racial undertones and overtones. The fight lasted 2 minutes 4 seconds, and in that time Louis knocked Schmeling down four times. They say that some of Schmeling's teeth were found embedded in Louis's glove... Motor racing, a dangerous but genteel activity in the 1920s and early 1930s, was touched by this, too, and touched hard. The combustible mixture produced two Grand Prix races at Donington Park, in 1937 and 1938, which were just as dramatic, just as sinister and just as full of foreboding. This is the full story of those races.

Panhard Gilco Colli 1952 Gallerij +32 (0)53 63 12 33 www.marreyt.com [email protected] What a pleasure to be able to present you with another delicious ex- Merk Panhard Mille Miglia sportscar. How else than delicious should I qualify this 1952 Panhard Gilco with Colli "disco volante" aluminium body ? This Model Gilco Colli chassis n° 008145 started life as a barchetta coachbuilt by Allemano. As part of the Ital-France team from Panhard importer Gastone Bouwjaar 1952 Crepaldi, pilot and co-pilot Marchese-Palvarini participated with this barchetta at the 1952 Mille Miglia (startnumber: 2343) and not only won the 750 cc category but also classifying a very honourable 67-th OA. After this succesful Mille Miglia, Crepaldi decided to have chassis 008145 rebodied into a berlinetta aerodynamica by Colli exactly in the same style as the famous "disco volante" Alfa Romeos which were entrusted to Fangio, Kling and Sanesi for the 1953 Mille Miglia. Only 2 Panhards were coachbuilt by Colli in "disco volante" style. In this new configuration, still part of the Ital-France team, chassis number 008145, now registered 207363 MI, was participating at the 1953 Mille Miglia with starting number 2214 now with pilot/co-pilot Girardi-Marcani. After passing Rome, leading once again the 750 category and having covered 3/4 of the race, unfortunately the cranckshaft broke. This berlinetta "disco volante" had nevertheless made a great impression on other participants and onlookers at the side of the road, by demonstrating with panache excellent punch and incredible speed (reaching a top of 175 Km/h) partly thanks to the excellent aerodynamics.

The fact that 258 remains at all as the sole surviving example of a P25 is something to be celebrated indeed. Like the ten other factory team cars that were to be dismantled to free up components for the new rear-engined Project 48s in the winter of 1959, 258 was only saved thanks to a directive from BRM head oce in Staordshire on the express wishes of long term patron and Chairman, Sir Alfred Owen who ordered, ‘ensure that you save the Dutch Grand Prix winner’. Founded in 1945, as an all-British industrial cooperative aimed at achieving global recognition through success in grand prix racing, BRM (British Racing Motors) unleashed its rst Project 15 cars in 1949. Although the company struggled with production and development issues, the BRMs showed huge potential and power, embarrassing the competition on occasion. The project was sold in 1952, when the technical regulations for the World Championship changed. Requiring a new 2.5 litre unsupercharged power unit, BRM - now owned by the Owen Organisation -developed a very simple, light, ingenious and potent 4-cylinder engine known as Project 25.

ACES WILD ACES WILD The Story of the British Grand Prix THE STORY OF THE Peter Miller Motor racing is one of the most 10. 3. BRITISH GRAND PRIX exacting and dangerous sports in the world today. And Grand Prix racing for Formula 1 single-seater cars is the RIX GREATS toughest of them all. The ultimate ambition of every racing driver since 1950, when the com petition was first introduced, has been to be crowned as 'World Cham pion'. In this, his fourth book, author Peter Miller looks into the back ground of just one of the annual qualifying rounds-the British Grand Prix-which go to make up the elusive title. Although by no means the oldest motor race on the English sporting calendar, the British Grand Prix has become recognised as an epic and invariably dramatic event, since its inception at Silverstone, Northants, on October 2nd, 1948. Since gaining World Championship status in May, 1950 — it was in fact the very first event in the Drivers' Championships of the W orld-this race has captured the interest not only of racing enthusiasts, LOONS but also of the man in the street. It has been said that the supreme test of the courage, skill and virtuosity of a Grand Prix driver is to w in the Monaco Grand Prix through the narrow streets of Monte Carlo and the German Grand Prix at the notorious Nürburgring. Both of these gruelling circuits cer tainly stretch a driver's reflexes to the limit and the winner of these classic events is assured of his rightful place in racing history.
