REGISTRO ITALIANO ALFA ROMEO (R.I.A.R.) International Club Il Presidente Fondato nel 1962 REGISTRO ITALIANO ALFA ROMEO (R.I.A.R.) International Club Il Presidente REGISTERED LETTER Arese, 26 October 2016 Newsletter no. 268 Dear Members, 2016 for RIAR under the flag of the Targa Florio – a year started with the event in Arese and ended with the trade fair in Padova. 20020 Arese (MI) Arese 20020 www.riar.it Our usual presence at the fair was in fact one more way of paying tribute to the - - history of the Targa Florio, which this year celebrated its 110th year of life. Alfa Romeo - second only to Porsche with its 11 victories - conquered as many as 10 absolute victories in this legendary Sicilian race, one of the most ancient and prestigious motor race in the world. But certainly, it was Alfa and the audacity of its drivers, which, particularly from the ‘20s to the ‘40s, created the extraordinary legend and @alfaromeo.com @alfaromeo.com enthusiasm around the Milanese brand. And the RIAR, as you may remind, set off Viale Luraghi, snc snc Luraghi, Viale – remembering its men and cars in March of this year at the Museum in Arese. The ACI (Automobile Club Italia) then invited four of our prestigious and exceptional vehicles to Palermo and Floriopoli in May for the Targa Speed event, together with the most registroalfa famous drivers of the past, “captained” by Jean Todt, President of FIA, to give life to the suggestive celebration of the one hundred years of Targa races. E.mail: - FCA Group Italy Italy FCAGroup – In late June, we were once again in Sicily with the rally “The Sicily of the Gattopardi on the Hundredth Anniversary of the Targa Florio”, and at last in Padova, once again invited by the ACI to the institutional prestige of its stand, where we exhibited two 44428183 important and very significant vehicles in the history of Alfa at the Targa: the RL TF from 1924, and the 33 TT 12 Fernet Branca, precisely the cars of the first and last victory of Alfa Romeo on the Madonie Mountains. Our Chairman d’Amico took part in Fax +39/02 Fax - two events organized by the ACI, as a speaker on Futurism and the Automobile and on the history of the Targa Florio race. A due homage on behalf of the RIAR, which presso ALFA ROMEO presso confirms its commitment in promoting the knowledge about the history of Alfa Romeo in every field. The RIAR stand was visited by many great drivers, among which were RIAR Nanni Galli, Sandro Nannini, Arturo Merzario, Sandro Munari, …. and many key people in the automotive industry, from the President of ACI, Angelo Sticchi Damiani, to Giancarlo Minardi. Ludvigsen papers, 1905-2011. Archival Collection 26 Title: Karl E. Ludvigsen papers, 1905-2011. Creator: Ludvigsen, Karl E. Call Number: Archival Collection 26 Quantity: 931 cubic feet (514 flat archival boxes, 98 clamshell boxes, 29 filing cabinets, 18 record center cartons, 15 glass plate boxes, 8 oversize boxes). Abstract: The Karl E. Ludvigsen papers 1905-2011 contain his extensive research files, photographs, and prints on a wide variety of automotive topics. The papers reflect the complexity and breadth of Ludvigsen’s work as an author, researcher, and consultant. Approximately 70,000 of his photographic negatives have been digitized and are available on the Revs Digital Library. Thousands of undigitized prints in several series are also available but the copyright of the prints is unclear for many of the images. Ludvigsen’s research files are divided into two series: Subjects and Marques, each focusing on technical aspects, and were clipped or copied from newspapers, trade publications, and manufacturer’s literature, but there are occasional blueprints and photographs. Some of the files include Ludvigsen’s consulting research and the records of his Ludvigsen Library. Scope and Content Note: The Karl E. Ludvigsen papers are organized into eight series. The series largely reflects Ludvigsen’s original filing structure for paper and photographic materials. Series 1. Subject Files [11 filing cabinets and 18 record center cartons] The Subject Files contain documents compiled by Ludvigsen on a wide variety of automotive topics, and are in general alphabetical order.

The FD0”X” Fittipaldi Years - Innovation despite the results by Darren Galpin When one thinks of the Copersucar Fittipaldi FD cars, the usual reaction is to dismiss them, and to marvel at the fact the Emerson Fittipaldi could waste his last years in F1 in such cars. But as usual, there is more to this tale than meets the eyes, and more than is usually reported. The build-up In 1969, Emerson Fittipaldi was in Britain pursuing a career in Formula Ford. Needing a bit of a help with his car, he raised some cash and asked a friend, Richard Divila, to come over and give him a hand. Richard Divila, a Brazilian national who had an English mother, was a technical graduate who was planning to do a PhD in automotive design and had a background in aerospace. He went to England planning to spend two weeks helping out Emerson, and embarked on a lifelong career instead. Emerson’s brother Wilson also moved to England, and together they set up their own team to enter into F3 and F2, Richard becoming “team manager, engineer, secretary, truckie, mechanic, chief cook and bottle washer”, progressing through various F3 and F2 Lotus’s, and acting as Emerson’s private engineer in F1. It was a busy time, as they were running almost every weekend. If they weren’t running in F1 or F2, they ran in sportscars and GT’s instead. By the time Wilson moved on to Bernie Ecclestone’s Brabham, Divila was busy modifying the Fittipaldi team cars to what they called “Fittipaldi spec”.

I think it originated from two key experi- SEPT 25 SPA SIX HOURS ences: firstly, while on family holiday in South Tyrol in Italy, the owner of a hotel we stayed at had a metallic 2017 blue 1750 Berlina – in which he’d occasionally take me shopping. I was maybe 10 years old, and fascinated by the instruments and the gear shift. I could see from the back seat how he’d work his way through the five-speed gearbox, which impressed me deeply. The other formative experience came thanks to my older sister’s then-boyfriend. They were living in Paris, and would come and visit in their dark blue two-litre Alfetta GTV. It was a brand-new car at the time, and as far as I was concerned it was the prettiest car in the world. However, I had to put my passion aside. While I al- ways liked the 2000 Bertone, at that point five or six years on the market, it was still an unattainable car for 20-year-old me. Even cars that were in really bad condition. Therefore my first Alfa was a 1300 Bertone, which I bought for 50 German Marks. At the time I was an apprentice mechanic, having already dropped out of school as my sole interest was cars. I later completed my high school diploma after my apprenticeship. At the time we were six or seven friends in Munich who shared the Alfa passion, so we pooled our money and rented a workshop.

Dale LaFollette’s Vintage MOTORPHOTO Summer 2002 Most of the photos in this catalog are single images only, meaning that I have only one of them and I do not own the negatives. I do not sell copy photos unless they are of a really rare subject and then this fact is mentioned in the description. Most photos by known photographers have the photographer's stamp on the reverse and many have writing on them in the form of a description and\or cropping notes. No claims are made for photo authorship unless I have conclusive proof, therefore many of the photos listed under ANONYMOUS could very well have been taken by well known photographers. It is probable that most photos were the only one, or one of few printed from the negative. All photos are black and white unless "color" in mentioned. All photos are printed on fiber based paper unless RC to denote "resin coated" is in the description (see legend).
