1971-1975: Early years in CanAm • The company was founded and self-funded by Don Nichols in 1969 as Nichols Advanced Vehicle Systems. • In 1971, Universal Oil Products (UOP) funded the team which promoted Lead Free Gas worldwide. The original cars were designed by Trevor Harris and raced under the “Team Shadow” banner. • The first Shadow (Mk-I) was entered in the Can-Am series and driven by and . The Mk-I featured an innovative design, using ultra low profile and very small wheels for low drag. • The team won the Can-Am championship in 1974 with driving. The Championship winning car (requiring restoration) is included as part of this collection.

1973-1979 • In 1972 Nichols led the Shadow team into Formula One with UOP sponsored cars designed by . Tony designed the BRM that gave Jean-Pierre Beltoise victory at the the previous year.

• The team debuted in Formula One at the 1973 with the DN1 . Two cars were available for drivers Jackie Oliver and George Follmer, as well as a private entry for who ran his car under the Hill banner.

• During 1974-1979, the cars were driven by world class drivers including , , Jean-Pierre Jarier, , Hans Stuck, , and Alan Jones (1980 F1 World Champion).

• The Shadow team competed in 104 F1 GP races (more than all the other American teams combined). Starting from 14th grid position, Alan Jones won the 1977 Austrian Grand Prix at the Osterreichring, August 14, 1977. The winning car (restoration required) is included in this collection.

• The recommended restoration process for the 20 cars is anticipated to take 3 years. The process steps are as follows: – Original drawings (with oversight from Tony Southgate) will govern the restoration process. – Each tub will be completely restored to original (as raced) specifications. – All suspension, braking, electrical and bodywork components will be re-manufactured to original specifications. – Engines and gearboxes will be re-manufactured to (as raced) specifications. – Bodywork color and detailing will be at new owners discretion, but preferably in “as raced” logo livery.

First Shadow Can Am Series car was the literally “knee-high” 1969 model Shadow MkI designed by Trevor Harris.

More than one year was spent in the completion and development of the initial chassis.

Primary effort was the development of the chassis and primary subsystems of powertrain and suspension utilizing ultra-low profile for minimal frontal area.

First test drivers were Hiroshi Kazato, George Follmer and Parnelli Jones

DN5-3B was assigned to JP Jarier as his “T car” for development testing and race event practice for Monaco, and Holland, then to Tom Pryce for the remainder of the season at and Austria.

The intensive work involved with this chassis was instrumental in confirming the design for the future successful DN8 design. The number plate on this car remains DN5-3B.

Clay started the race but later parked OFF the circuit and walked back to the pit area Later, Mario Andretti arrived (also walking) with profuse apologies for “T-boning: DN9-2A with his spun off Lotus – destroying both cars!

Danny arrived on Monday to see Clay’s new white car being sprayed black for his future use!
