LABOUREUR, Francesco by Federico Trastulli - Biographical Dictionary of Italians - Volume 62 (2004) The son of Massimiliano, a sculptor originally from Brussels, and of Paola Salomoni, the Laboureur was born in Rome on 11 November. 1767. He was baptized in the parish of S. Lorenzo in Lucina with the names of Francesco, Filippo and Simone (Rome, Arch., Historian of the Vicariate, S. Lorenzo in Lucina, Liber baptizatorum, 32, c 127v); the fact that the Laboureur was better known as Francesco Massimiliano, or "Cavalier Massimiliano" after the conferral of the knighthood of the papal order of the Golden Spur, has generated confusion regarding the news concerning the biography and the works referable to him, to his father and son Alessandro Massimiliano. The Laboureur devoted himself early to sculpture, learning the rudiments in the family; he attended the courses of the Accademia di S. Luca, obtaining the second place at the Clementino Prize of 1783. His fortune in the Roman environment was linked to the figure of the French F. Cacault, minister plenipotentiary in Rome as well as great patron, who already in a letter of 1801 signaled to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ch.-M. de Talleyrand, the excellent workmanship of a marble bust of Napoleon who commissioned the sculptor, part of a larger group of works he collected, now at the Musée des beaux-arts in Nantes. There is news about the working of a second bust of Bonaparte in another letter from Cacault, announcing how he had in mind to make the Laboureur also a colossal statue of Napoleon, at the time the first consul.

Lorenzo Botrugno Gasparri ed i rapporti con il Regno Unito nel pontificato di Pio XI Spunti per la ricerca a partire dalle sessioni della Congregazione degli Affari Ecclesiastici Straordinari Abstract Through unpublished documentary sources – the minutes of the meetings of the Sacred Congregation of Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs – the essay aims to illustrate Pietro Gasparri’s privileged perspective over anglo-vatican relations. While mainly focused on his period as Cardinal Secretary of State of Pius XI (1922–1930), some hints will also be given to his tenure of office during the pontificate of Benedict XV, as well as to Consalvi’s and Rampolla’s influence on his way of perceiving British matters. For more information, please contact [email protected]. 81 Chapter 3 Restoration, Dissolution, Restoration, and Schism Napoleon and the Daughters of Charity On 13 February 1806, Napoleon wrote Pius VII, "In the temporal sphere your Holiness will have for me the regard that I have for him in the spiritual. Your Holiness is the sovereign of Rome, but I am the Emperor and all my enemies must be his."1 The pope, however, re fused to support the emperor's anti-English foreign policy. He also wanted to safeguard the sovereignty of the Papal States. These posi tions caused relations between the Holy See and the emperor to worsen. On 17 May 1809, these relations collapsed as the empire annexed the Papal States. Several months later, the French took the pope into custody, beginning a five-year incarceration. Simultaneously, because of the British sea blockade, the foreign missions played less of a factor in the emperor's plans. Because of these developments, the Lazarists' utility became more tenuous. Fa tally, Napoleon also came to doubt their loyalty. The most important factor, however, in the Congregation's and Hanon's fall from favor, concerned a struggle over the control of the Daughters of Charity.

PIETRO STELLA APPUNTI PER UNA BIOGRAFIA DI GIACINTO SIGISMONDO GERDIL È passato un buon ventennio da quando un gruppo di storici tenne a Roma il 9 ottobre 1981 un incontro sul tema «biografia e storiografia»1. Erano tutti studiosi che consideravano la biografia non certo come storia minore, ma come un’opera che richiedeva tanto impegno e tanta maestria quanto qualsiasi altro tipo di lavoro storico. Tra questi c’era anche Furio Diaz, autore di uno stimolante profilo di Francesco Maria Gianni, esper- to funzionario nella Toscana di Pietro Leopoldo proprio negli anni di Gerdil cardinale a Roma2. Alla luce di quanto fu detto allora non è difficile rilevare oggi mu- tamenti, sviluppi e proposte che sono innovative rispetto a quelle del 1981 quanto agli intenti da perseguire e ai metodi da porre in atto. Allo- ra si parlò di straordinaria espansione del genere biografico. Il campo en- tro cui agguerriti ed eminenti studiosi collocavano i loro lavori biografici era in genere quello delle operazioni editoriali promosse da imprenditori attenti ai gusti collettivi e perciò agli alti e bassi del mercato librario; a se- conda che la curiosità del gran pubblico andava a personaggi come John Kennedy, Che Guevara o, in ambito religioso, a papa Giovanni XXIII, gli editori spingevano o trattenevano gli autori. Il prodotto per ciò stesso mutava. Certe biografie potevano vantare alte tirature e ristampe persino nel giro di pochi mesi; e inoltre, traduzioni in varie lingue e diverse edi- zioni accompagnate da apposita pubblicità su giornali e tramite altri mez- zi di comunicazione di massa. È facile intuire che sulla base di tali crite- ri personaggi come il Gerdil non potevano allora (e non possono oggi) in- teressare il gran pubblico e il mercato librario.

Pacca, cardinal Bartolomeo Cardinal Bartolomeo Pacca (Bernad). Bartolomeo Pacca est né à Benevento le 25 décembre 1756. Il étudia chez les Jésuites à Naples, au collège Clémentin de Rome, puis à l'Académie des nobles ecclésiastiques. Il reçut les ordres en 1785. Pie VI le nomma en 1786 évêque titulaire de Damiette et nonce à Cologne. Créé cardinal en 1801, il fut pro-secrétaire d'État en 1808, suite à la démission forcée du cardinal Gabrielli lorsque les Français occupèrent Rome. Arrêté avec le Pape en 1809 et exilé en Italie puis en France, il rentra à Rome après la chute de Napoléon. Il occupa ensuite plusieurs charges importantes dans la curie et demeura un étroit collaborateur des papes Léon XII, Pie VIII et Grégoire XVI. En 1825-1826, il était préfet de la Congrégation des Évêques et Réguliers. C'est à ce titre que le père de Mazenod est allé vingt fois chez lui et a été invité trois fois à dîner. Il s'est présenté chez lui la première fois le 11 décembre avec une lettre de recommandation d'un abbé Taillé. Il écrit dans son journal, ce jour-là, qu'il est «reçu poliment». Le cardinal ne changera pas d'attitude et sera patient car, depuis le 7 janvier jusqu'au 15 février, il reçut le Fondateur tous les deux ou trois jours. Le 7 janvier, c'était pour demander d'obtenir du Pape une simplification de la procédure: examen de la Règle par trois cardinaux au lieu de sept ou huit. Malade, le cardinal remet sans cesse sa visite à Léon XII.

The Role of Giuseppe Garampi in the Hontheim Case1 Dries VANYSACKER KULeuven The tract De statu Ecclesiae by Johann Nikolaus von Hontheim, the suffragan bishop of Trier, published in 1763, was put on the Index in 1764, 1766, 1771 and 1773, because it contained, in the eyes of the Roman Con- gregation of the Index, “heretical” tenets of canon law which put forth an ecclesial system in which the pope had only a honorary primacy2. In 1777, Hontheim circulated an abbreviated version of his tract; in 1778, he was forced by the Elector of Trier to make a retraction; and in 1781, he wrote a not so welcome comment on his retraction. Only two years after Hon- theim’s death in 1790, Rome reacted upon the latter’s comment via Car- dinal Gerdil. A complex and strange story indeed! In the introduction of his recent editions of the abbreviated tract of 1777 and Hontheim’s later commentary of 1781, Ulrich L. Lehner, studied in detail the condemnation based on the official documents3. In these pages, I want to state that an exclusive use of official documents risks to deny the complexity of the context and the possible effects of such condemna- tions. By ignoring the role of some persons and their networking behind the scenes in the Hontheim case, Lehner misses, according to me, the real background of the story. In mid-August 1764, the prefect of the Vatican Archives, Canon Giuseppe Garampi (1725-1792)4, wrote in his travel journal that he spent some days 1.
