The Institute is of well known for its European collections on the 19th and 20th century labour movement. Since 1964, however, when Fritjof Tichelman became head of the Australia / Africa / Asia department, the Institute has also covered topics on non-European areas as well. There was already an extensive collection of documents on Latin America which had been collected by Max Nettlau.1 But Asia has become increasingly important in the Institute's efforts to collect primary source material for socio-historical research,2 although Indonesia has always been an important area for collections and research. As for Africa, from 1964 on, developments in that continent were followed, but were never given priority. Some recent acquisitions, notably the archives of "de Werkgroep Kairos", SANAM, and ICCO, led us to consider the desirability of putting together a survey of the African material in the Institute's collections. The result is the current guide. Most of the material in our Archival Department and in the Department of Image and Sound Documents is listed here. Not listed in this guide is the material that is only in our library catalogue (with the exception of a few bibliographic works, which are to be found at the end of this guide). Books, booklets, and periodicals must be searched in the online catalogue. 1 See for a survey of the Latin American collections: - A survey of Brazilian and Argentine materials at the Internationaal Instituut voor Sociale Geschiedenis in Amsterdam. Africa Guide, 1 November 2005 4 The most important holdings for sources on African history in our archival department are the archives of international trade union secretariats and international human rights organizations. The second area of relevant information comes from large national, predominantly Dutch, political and trade union organizations involved in development and support of aid to Africa. From archives and collections of individuals and organizations a historical or biographical description is always given, even if it is not highly relevant for information on African topics. What follows are relevant extracts from the contents description or extracts from the relevant parts of the inventory or list. The latter are highlighted in grey. The information from lists and inventories is taken directly from the original documents, and thus includes that language. Therefore, the reader is cautioned against interpreting special emphasis because text is in bold typeface, italics or other special type. From Archives that deal exclusively with subjects on Africa the biography / history and content description are given, but the inventories or lists are not added. The main focus has been on African topics. The aim of this guide is to provide information on primary sources available at the International Institute of Social History for research on African social history. Because much of this material is to be found in European organizations sympathetic to the African cause, data on the activities of those organizations in Europe were also listed. Specialists may ignore what is irrelevant to their research, but some may benefit from its presence because it provides a context for sources on Africa. No systematic information was included on Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Lybia, or Egypt (hence the term "Sub-Maghreb" in the title). In some collections, however, it was not practicable to exclude information on these countries, so it is included in some of the entries. For international collections the information is given in English, for Dutch collections this is in Dutch. An English-Dutch vocabulary of some archival terms has been provided to make the guide more accessible for an English reading audience. In the Image & Sound section not all material is listed; for example, buttons are not included. Sound material entered in our library catalogue is also not included. But most significant is the fact that about half the items from the vast collection Posters and Photographs are to be found in our online catalogue and therefore are not listed here. Therefore, an extract from the thesaurus and some instructions about how to search the online catalogue is added to this guide. On the Internet the catalogue can be found at: http://www.iisg.nl/opcuk.html.
