He married Jane Taylor circa 1620. 4.1.2 Jane Tayor (5923) was born circa 1595. She married John Korkish circa 1620. She died in 1659-60. Her Will records her name as “Jane Taylor alias Korkish”. 4.2 The Children of John Korkish & Jane Taylor Number &Name Type & Birthdate Place/Notes 5635 Henry C 1620 Rushen 5924 Jane C 1622 Rushen 5925 Margaret C 1624 Rushen 5926Ann C 1626Rushen 5927John C 1628 Rushen 5628 Mary C 1630 Rushen 5929 Catherine C 1632 Rushen NOTE: The birth order has not been established but is seem likel that Henry was the eldest son if not the eldest child. He appears to be tho only married child at the death of his mother in 1659-60. 4.2.1 Henry Corkish (5635) was born circa 1620. He married Joney Maddrell circa 1650. He was buried at Rushen on the 11th of January, 1715. His Will mentions his sons John, living in Kent, Henry (Harry) and Richard and his daughter Margaret, who was married to Thomas Gell, and her three children Margery, John and Joney 4.2.1.1 Joney Maddrell (5922) was born circa 1620. She married Henry Corkish circa 1650. She died in the last quarter of 1699. The name of her father has not been identified but her mother appears to have been Jane Corkish. She was mentioned in the Will of her mother–in–law, Jane Taylor, above. Her Will mentions her children Richard, Margaret, Joney and John, her grandson Thomas Watterson, her brother John, a Kathrin Qualtrough and a Chris: Karran. 4.3 The Children of Henry Corkish & Joney Maddrell Number &Name Type & Birthdate Place/Notes 5874 John C 1646Rushen 5641 Joney C 1648 Rushen 5938 Richard C 1650 Rushen 5639 Jane C 1652 Rushen 5640 Margaret C 1654 Rushen 5630 Henry C 1660 Rushen Note: The birth order has not been establshed, It is known that John was alive in 1660. 4.3.1 Henry Corkish (5930) was born circa 1660. He was not mentioned in the Will of his grandmother, Jane Taylor, in February 1659-60, which could imply that he was probably not yet born. Alternatively if he was the eldest son and presumed heir of the family farm no separate provision would be made in the Will. A marriage has not yet been identified but he is thought to have had at least one son. THE BARROVIAN KING WILLIAM'S COLLEGE MAGAZINE Published three times yearly NUMBER 232 . JULY I 9 $ J A Career for young men that carries responsibility Britain's need for coal increases every year. Oil and nuclear energy can only bridge the gap between the coal we have and the power we need. The bulk of this energy must, for many generations, come from coal. To meet the increasing demands for coal, vast schemes of recon- struction and expansion are being undertaken by the coal-mining industry, for which there must be an adequate supply of suitably qualified and well-trained men. University Scholarships.—The National Coal Board offer a hundred University Scholarships a year ; most are in Mining Engineering, and some are available in -Mechanical, Electrical and Chemical Engineering and in Fuel Technology. They are worth about the same as State Scholarships but there is no parental means test. School Leavers.—There are also good opportunities for advance- ment for boys with initiative who come straight into the industry from school. You can attend part-time courses (for example. National Certificate courses) at technical colleges for which you are given day release from work with pay. Management Training.—When you are qualified—either through the University or through technical college while working—you are eligible for a two or three-year course under the Board's Management Training Scheme. Each trainee has a course mapped out for him personally, with a senior engineer to give him individual supervision. Scientific Careers.—If you are interested in a Scientific Career, there is absorbing and rewarding work at the Board's Research establishments, in the coalfields on operational work.

  • The Lost Coin of ^Thelred Ii from Rushen Abbey, Isle Of
SHORT ARTICLES AND NOTES THE LOST COIN OF ^THELRED II FROM RUSHEN ABBEY, ISLE OF MAN JAMES GRAHAM-CAMPBELL STUDENTS of the Viking Age in the Isle of Man owe a particular debt to Kristin Bornholdt Collins for the great quantity of archival and antiquarian information that she assembled during the research for her two-volume PhD thesis, entitled Viking-Age Coin Finds from the Isle of Man: a Study of Coin Circulation, Production and Concepts of Wealth (University of Cambridge, 2003). Its accompanying 'Corpus of Viking-Age Coin Hoards from the Isle of Man', in Vol. 2, contains a list of the eight 'Single Coin Finds: Viking Age', which were known to her at the time.1 Five of these are relatively recent finds, all of which were excavated on St Patrick's Isle, Peel, between 1984 and 1986,2 but the other three were discovered during the nineteenth century. One is the well-known ninth-century Frisian imitation of a gold solidus of Louis the Pious, found in Maughold parish churchyard in 1884, and now in the Manx Museum,3 but the other two are lost coins, both identified on discovery as being of /Ethelred II (978-1016). One (said to have been of gold) was found, c.l830, in levelling a mound at the farm of Gordon, Patrick,4 and the other (first mentioned in 1869) was found 'in the garden of Rushen Abbey' ,5 There exists, however, one further nineteenth-century reference to another lost coin of /Ethelred II having been found on Man, 'in the north of the Island': this is noted by Dr Oswald, in 1860 (together with that from Gordon), as also being of
