    2016, Vol. 4, No. 4 DOI : 10.15678/EBER.2016.040412 Special Economic Zones as Growth and Anti-growth Poles as Exemplified by Polish Regions Hanna Godlewska-Majkowska, Agnieszka Komor, Magdalena Typa A B S T R A C T Objective : The objective of this paper is to present the effects of special economic zones (SEZ) on the polarisation of public economic space in Polish regions. Research Design & Methods : The paper looks at both positive and negative effects of economic zones on the polarization of economic space in Polish regions. In an empiri- cal analysis of internal and external effects of SEZs growth centres are identified. Cen- tre of the polarised region, as a source of development incentives, characterised with a higher growth dynamics in comparison to the other part of the region is identified as a growth pole; while the centre of a polarised region being a source of crisis factors higher than in the region is identified as an anti-growth pole. Findings: In the result of conducted studies 8 growth poles, 19 centres of unstable economic situation have been identified, anti-growth poles has not been identified. Factors that result in the polarisation as well as its positive and negative characteris- tics were identified. Implications & Recommendations: The new model, which captures growing changes and can activate an appropriate action aimed at avoiding crisis can be used as a po- tential early warning system by the authorities of territorial units. Contribution & Value Added: The originality of this work lies in proposing a new methodological approach to identify poles and anti-poles.

The article also analyzes Polish historical memory through the prism of three theories of collective memory discussed by Nachman Ben-Yehuda. To the eye of a foreign observer, Polish memorialization of pre-1918 battle sites appears strange. Significant battlefields from the Seven Years War (1756-1763) and World War I are largely ignored in favor of emphasis on medieval battlefields. The author argues that this pattern reflects both Polish ethnocentric nationalism and a desire to forget the many years during which German-speaking peoples controlled portions of present-day Poland. The author maintains that Poland’s early Cold War-era policy of de-Germanization of cultural sites is no longer appropriate for contemporary Poland - a member of the European Union. My dissertation examines how and why millions of expellees from the province of Silesia came to terms with the loss of their homeland. Revising the traditional expectation that this population was largely interested in restoring prewar borders as a means to return to the East, I offer a new answer to the question of why peace and stability took root in West Germany after decades of violent upheaval. Before Bonn recognized Poland’s postwar border in 1970, self-appointed political and scholarly spokespeople for the expellees lost no occasion to preach the “right to the homeland” (Heimat) and advocate for a revolutionary migration, in which all expellees would return to the lands that had once been inside Germany’s 1937 borders. Confronting the generally accepted theory that expellees either thought like their leaders or lost interest in the East because of material prosperity in the West, I examine a wide range of neglected archival holdings, periodicals, circular letters, memory books, travel reports, and unpublished manuscripts to show how, through fantasizing about the old Heimat, expellees steadily came to terms with the permanence of their exile.
