NEWS FROM THE CHURCH OF THE EPIPHANY TOCKWITH
We are about to enter into an interregnum. This is a phase we go through between the retirement of Rev Roy and the appointment of a new vicar. A parish profile has been written in the hope that we can attract interest in our group of churches. It is not a full time position so it may not be a position that we can fill quickly. In the interim you may well see more lay led services and fewer services that have a communion although at least one communion service will be held in a church within the parish each Sunday.
Come and say good bye to Roy and Mary at the special farewell Parish service at 10.00am Sunday 30th July in Tockwith Church.
Roy came into our midst during difficult times as we made the transition to become part of the Parish of Marston Moor. With five churches to oversee it is difficult to comprehend how he did it on 3½ days a week. We all know he did more and we should be very grateful for that. After nine years serving the five churches in our Parish, taking numerous services, weddings, baptisms and funerals, as well as drinking countless cups of tea whilst visiting, talking and meeting the variety of needs of all in our community he well deserves his retirement. We should also not forget the support that Mary has given Roy. With the demands of the Parish at times it must have been very difficult to sustain marital harmony. Both Roy and Mary have a strong faith and their time with us has proved that we have a sustainable Parish. We wish them both well in retirement.
This month we also bid farewell to the school caretaker John Wardle who has done so many things µbehind the scenes¶ from delivering this magazine to cleaning the church. Come along to the Forge behind the Spotted Ox at 8pm Saturday 22nd July to give him a good send off.
The inaugural Epiphany Café on the 22nd June attracted quite a lot of interest. This was an afternoon for people to come along and have a chat over a cup of coffee or tea. Future cafés will be held on the third Thursday of the month. We promise there will be QR µSUHDFKLQJ¶ and anyone can come along even if you have no religious belief. It might be that if this gets established that we can get musicians or singers to provide entertainment during some of the afternoons.

DONATE A BIBLE We have a scheme that allows families to donate a Bible to the Church dedicated to their children to recognize the date of their Baptisms. We would like to extend the scheme to anyone who might wish to donate a Bible and dedicate it in memory of a loved one. Two local %HQHILFHV¶7KH3DULVKRI/RZHU Nidderdale and Marston Moor together with the local Methodist Church will be combining together for a special service at Tockwith Show.
There will be a special Songs of Praise Service with music provided by the Yorkshire Brass Quintet.
Come along for a good sing. Afterwards the band will be playing a selection of easy listening music to suit all tastes

For many parents, the birth of a child is a deeply spiritual event. The Church recognises this, and provides a Service of Thanksgiving for the Birth of a Child for those who would prefer this to a ‘christening’ (now more commonly called ‘Baptism’). It includes prayers for the child and family, and a recognition of all the hopes invested in the child, and is a great way to start a little life.

This took us into a beautiful landscape of small dales and steep low wooded ridges. Our walk was to be entirely on bridletracks and footpaths and constitutes most of the course of the Burton Leonard 10K running race, in reverse. There were plenty of paths to choose from when we came to a “crossroads” soon after passing over the strangely named Occaney Beck which eventually becomes the, again mysteriously named, River Tutt. The mighty Tutt eventually joins the Ure at Boroughbridge. Our route was essentially a big rectangle and having turned west we passed above Lime Kiln farm to ascend Rigg Moor at about 70m above sea level where the dreaming spires of Harrogate could be glimpsed peeping over other low hills. Now we progressed towards Brearton and turned east along “Knaresborough Road”, which is a track, to make a Marston Moor Walkers’ obligatory encounter with a horned beast at a gate. This was a gentle looking heifer and well and truly enclosed. We passed Warren Farm and had a joke with two blokes driving in a hefty fence post then turned back south to return to the pretty village of Farnham, now alas publess. This whole drag is outside the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Beauty, but one wonders why, as none of the ten ramblers disagreed about how pretty it was. A good 6 miles on another fine day. Many will have fond memories of John but who could possible forget his impersonation of the great comedian Tommy Cooper. Tockwith has Got Talent evenings will never be the same.

Our Year 6 Children had a fantastic time at Humphrey Head last month, it is such a fantastic opportunity for them to get together to work as a team. They were totally blessed to have such fantastic weather whilst they were there too.
During early June we held a science day which was a really fantastic fun day for children and parents alike. Mrs George also invited a real professor who came in and gave talks and performed live experiments.
Year 5 had a visit to Drax Power Station to launch their studies on electricity. It was a fascinating day out in a working power station. Year 5 came back buzzing and we don’t think it was being too close to all that electricity either.
Moving into July we are looking forward to Sports Day and our annual BBQ on the 7th.
This is followed by the Summer Gala on Friday 14th July straight after school. Recipe for friendship
1. Firstly, mix in a glass full of advice for when you are stuck and need a hand. 2. Secondly, sprinkle in a handful of smiles and a cup full of laughter for when we are feeling low. 3. After that, stir in a large spoonful of teamwork for when the challenges become too hard. 4. Now, add a pinch of compliments to make us feel good. 5. Soon after, pour in plenty of respect to allow the mixture to come together. 6. Next, slowly add in heaped spoonfuls of forgiveness to help us move on. 7. Afterwards, slice up the impatience and anger whilst adding a dash of politeness and caring. 8. Finally, whisk the entire mixture thoroughly and add one last dollop of helpfulness.

The main purpose of Community Speed Watch is to deter speeding, educate drivers, and encourage more care on our local roads.

TOCKWITH SINGERS
In June we performed at two care homes in Wetherby, The Manor and Ashfield House. Each concert lasted half an hour and consisted of 8 songs, taking our audiences from warm beaches to cool mountains, battlefields to jungles and beyond. We enjoyed presenting the songs and our audiences happily joined in. We have one more concert at Oaklands Care Home, Cattal, on 4th July when our programme will include a selection of well-known songs from and about America.
Singing in a choir is really good for your health, physically and for mental wellbeing. Why GRQ¶W\RXJLYHLWDWU\"You might even enjoy the it! No previous experience necessary. We generally meet in the village hall on Tuesday evenings during school term time from 7.30pm until 9.30pm. (Unless we have a concert). Smarties, fruit kebabs and Father's Day key-rings all helped to re-enact the parable of the Lost Son, in the end it all got a bit Messy! I was reminded recently just how hard it is at times to sit as a Parish Councillor. A target for criticism, someone to blame for problems within the village, someone else to take responsibility while we choose not to, someone to point the finger at when things go pear-shaped, someone to take up an issue on our behalf. The list could go on. And all that hassle for no pay, the only reward being the knowledge that they are doing the very best possible for the Parish and all who live here. And my word, how difficult it is trying to be all things to all people!

The Schedules for the 2017 show to be held on Sunday 6th August are available on line. Hard copies are also available from local retail outlets. We are now entering the agricultural show season. There are around 40 shows in the County which vary in size. Tockwith Show is a medium sized show with its origins going back to 1945 when it was originally an Horticultural Show and intended to raise funds for the Red Cross. It has increased in size in the last 20 years so that it has become one of the showpiece shows in the County.
Many shows came into being as a means of keeping the rural community informed about agricultural tools, techniques and crops. Things have changed a little these days with lots of information obtained from the internet. Shows do still serve a useful purpose but they also tend to be a combination of social gathering for country folk and the opportunity to display (and perhaps sell) all kinds of animals and produce, with many and varied keenly contested competitions.
If you have never been to any of these shows you are missing a great day out. Why not try your local show you will not regret it.

The congregation of St Georges alongside people known and unknown made this outstanding creation. They knitted, provided scenery, props, donated materials, took photographs, made videos and typed scripts to produce the settings for these well known Bible accounts. They have created scenes from some of the best-known Bible stories in a way, which can be understood and enjoyed by all. The exhibition is on tour across the country and we are fortunate to have it with us for 9 days. Roy came as a very welcome Assistant Curate just over nine years ago. He never expected to be landed in the deep end! ± Revd Canon -RKQ5HQGDOO¶VLOOQHVVDQG retirement, an interregnum, a new incumbent in the Revd Paula Robinson, an interregnum and then, what joy, he became our Vicar.
We shall miss him leading our worship and our singing. We shall miss him being WKHUHZKHQZHQHHGHGWRIHHO*RG¶VSUHVHQFHZLWKXVDWWLPHVRISHUVRQDOVDGQHVV and difficulty as well as celebration. We shall no longer require raincoats when we come to Baptism services!

The United Parish services are every first Sunday and, when there is one, every fifth Sunday at 10.00am. These services are an ideal opportunity for the parishes to get to know one another and to worship together in a larger congregation. Tickets for York Minster The parish has an allocated number of free passes to York Minster for the use of parishioners. They may be borrowed for a day, and then returned to your local church.
