Kobiety w poezji Kazimiery Zawistowskiej i Renée Vivien..........................230 HALF A CENTURY LATER: RE-reading Frantz FANON 5 Paulina Grzęda Half a Century Later: Re-reading Frantz Fanon in the 21st Century The year 2011 marked the 50th anniversary of Frantz Fanon’s death as well as the 50th anniversary of the publication of his seminal text, The Wretched of the Earth. Half a century later, Frantz Fanon and his work continue to serve as a central node of focus and theoretical discussion in the academic field of postcolonial studies and beyond. This paper will discuss the enduring relevance of Fanon’s theoretical legacy for the conceptualization of the cultural and political dilemmas that we are facing in the early stages of the twenty-first century. It seems tempting to adduce Fanon and his thought – laid out in his two now canonical texts, Black Skin, White Masks (1952) and The Wretched of the Earth (1961) – in the wake of the outburst of the revolutionary wave of demonstrations and protests that have swept across the Arab world over the last year and a half. After all, the civil uprisings that erupted in Tunisia and spread to Egypt, Libya, Bahrain, and Syria among other places, bear striking resemblance to the heroic struggles of the Algerian War for Independence that Fanon’s writings stem from. Surely, in the face of the murderous acts of Hosni Mubarak and Muammar Gaddafi one cannot fail to notice that Fanon’s ad- monition against excesses of power and “the detrimental role of the leader” testifies to the visionary power of his thought (Fanon 2004: 127). The prophetic quality of his assumptions equally exhibits itself in the crucial role he assigned to Western powers in sustaining corrupt regimes as well as to the significance of the common people’s solidarity and to the agency of grass-roots movements in successfully combating oppression and exploitation (Abbas 2011). His depiction of the masses of Algerian revolutionaries who had to resist “the corruption and the brainwashing, the traitors and the ‘national’ armies” is rather unsettling in its resemblance to the descriptions of the Arab spring rebels that the international media feed us with today (Fanon 2004: 130). Fanon was, without a doubt, a great visionary who continues to be a spokesperson for revo- lutionaries worldwide, but his insightful work is more than a mere blueprint for a political action and his writings more than “the handbook for the Black revolution that is changing the shape of the world,” as an inscription on the cover of the 1968 Black Cat edition, one of the most popular American editions of The Wretched of the Earth, used to read. Indeed, Fanon’s insight and method provide the conceptual tools not only for deconstructing contemporary processes of globalization but also for foregrounding the emergent need to confront pan-European dominance, while simul- taneously laying foundations for a new form of postcolonial humanism. It is precisely this enduring capability of Fanon’s thought to surpass these historically and politically situated immediacies that this paper will attempt to testify to. Over the last decade a great number of theories of globalization have emerged across the disciplines and globalization is now reshaping our approach towards social sciences. Among the phenomena most often emphasized by researchers are the development of a globalized economy 6 PAULINA GrzędA involving new systems of finance, production and consumption and transnational economic in- tegration, as well as the strengthened relationship between national and global economies and culture and the processes of unification of transnational cultural patterns (Robinson 2008: 125). Underlying all these theoretical considerations there is an agreement that economic forces are the fundamental, organizing principle of globalization processes. Ideologies that prevail tend to be col- orblind and to adopt post-race assumptions, while trumpeting multiethnic hybridity. As Nazneen Kane points out in her insightful study of Fanon’s theory of racialization, Frantz Fanon’s Theory of Racialization: Implications for Globalization, in failing to recognize how race and racism can equally determine the social inequalities engendered by globalization, the canonical works of globaliza- tion studies risk undermining their ability to remain critical (2007: 354). It is in this respect that Fanon and his critical insight may prove most useful. Kane argues that in order to allow space for human emancipation, as well as to retain their transformative quality, globalization theories should critically incorporate “the racial optic” expounded in Fanon’s work (Fanon 2004: xiii). Already in his 2004 foreword to the new edition of The Wretched of the Earth, Homi Bhabha hinted at a “glob- al duality” that permeates contemporary processes of globalization and that could be effectively re-interpreted in terms of Fanon’s description of the Manichean construction of colonial society (Bhabha 2004: xii). Indeed, throughout his two key texts, Black Skin, White Masks and The Wretched of the Earth, as well as to a smaller extent in
