12 March 1999 Dear Lady Menuhin, I Just Learnt with Profound i-JLadftfiHsjIMiiSS) THE SECRETARY-GENERAL 12 March 1999 Dear Lady Menuhin, I just learnt with profound sorrow the sudden passing away of Sir Yehudi Menuhin. It was in March 1997 that we met briefly in the lobby of the Cape Sun Hotel in Cape Town, South Africa for the first time. He expressed great support for the United Nations and kind words to me personally and wished me well as I embarked on my new role as Secretary-General of the United Nations. During our most recent meeting in Davos, Switzerland, Sir Yehudi continued to express his support for the work that we are doing in the United Nations to achieve peace and progress in the world. Although our encounters in South Africa and Switzerland were brief, they were nevertheless warm and unforgettable. Sir Yehudi was a great human being who accomplished a great deal as an individual artist and gave infinitely to all of humanity during his life-long devotion to music. His contributions transcended the artificial barriers of politics, language and culture. The kinds of Sir Yehudi are a rare gift to humanity. The whole world is the poorer by his death. On behalf of the United Nations and on my own behalf, I express our most sincere condolences to you and the rest of Sir Yehudi's family. Yours sincerely, Kofi A. Master of Science (Speech Communi- cation and Drama), August, 1974, 134 pp., bibliography, 31 titles. This study investigates the motives behind the rhetorical strategies of rejection and acceptance used by John Bright in his four Parliamentary speeches opposing the Crimean War. Kenneth Burke's dramatistic pentad was used to evaluate the four speeches. An examination of the pentad's five elements reveals that Bright had six motives for opposing the war. To achieve his purpose in giving the speeches--to restore peace to England and the world--Bright' used the major rhetorical agencies of rejection and acceptance.     ‘No Troops but the British’: British National Identity and the Battle for Waterloo Kyle van Beurden BA/BBus (Accy) (QUT), BA Honours (UQ) A thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2015 School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry British National Identity and the Battle for Waterloo Kyle van Beurden Abstract In the ‘long eighteenth-century’ British national identity was superimposed over pre-existing identities in Britain in order to bring together the somewhat disparate, often warring, states. This identity centred on war with France; the French were conceptualised as the ‘other’, being seen by the British as both different and inferior. For many historians this identity, built in reaction and opposition to France, dissipated following the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815, as Britain gradually introduced changes that allowed broader sections of the population to engage in the political process. A new militaristic identity did not reappear in Britain until the 1850s, following the Crimean War and the Indian Mutiny. This identity did not fixate on France, but rather saw all foreign nations as different and, consequently, inferior. An additional change was the increasing public interest in the army and war, more generally. War became viewed as a ‘pleasurable endeavour’ in which Britons had an innate skill and the army became seen as representative of that fact, rather than an outlet to dispose of undesirable elements of the population, as it had been in the past. British identity became increasingly militaristic in the lead up to the First World War. However, these two identities have been seen as separate phenomena, rather than the later identity being a progression of the earlier construct.

Coss 2005 ABSTRACT The British soldier of the Peninsular War, 1808-1814, has in the last two centuries acquired a reputation as being a thief, scoundrel, criminal, and undesirable social outcast. Labeled “the scum of the earth” by their commander, the Duke of Wellington, these men were supposedly swept from the streets and jails into the army. Their unmatched success on the battlefield has been attributed to their savage and criminal natures and Wellington’s tactical ability. A detailed investigation, combining heretofore unmined demographic data, primary source accounts, and nutritional analysis, reveals a picture of the British soldier that presents his campaign and combat behaviors in a different light. Most likely an unemployed laborer or textile worker, the soldier enlisted because of economic need. A growing population, the impact of the war, and the transition from hand-made goods to machined products displaced large numbers of workers. Men joined the army in hopes of receiving regular wages and meals. In this they would be sorely disappointed. Enlisted for life, the soldier’s new primary social group became his surrogate family.

    The Journal of Military History and Defence Studies Volume 1 Issue 1 (January 2020) The contribution of the Irish soldier to the British Army during the Peninsula campaign 1808 – 1814 James Deery The majority of the historiography concerning the Irish contribution to the British army during their campaign on the Iberian Peninsula (1808 -1814) has focused on the Irish regiments and their service with Wellington in Portugal, Spain and France. While the significance of research into these regiments is undeniable it has unintentionally resulted in an under appreciation of the true extent of the Irish soldier’s contribution. The purpose of this paper is to add to the existing historiography by examining the wider Irish contribution in order to arrive at an empirical based assessment as to the criticality of the Irish soldier to Wellington’s victory during the Peninsula war. The majority of Irish soldiers who served in the Peninsula did so in English and Scottish infantry regiments. Their abilities and crucially their integration into the British army were key success factors for Wellington during the Peninsula campaign. An examination of how this was achieved forms a key part of this paper which finds that the capabilities of the Irish soldier and the British army organisational structure and system mutually supported each other. Furthermore, the Irish officer’s contribution has only been assessed based on individual accounts and narratives in the absence of any in-depth evaluation of their actual numbers. With over 30 per cent of Wellington’s officers being Irish an analysis of their levels of command was undertaken to demonstrate their significance to the overall conduct and operation of the Peninsula army.

    Fall 08 Building a Warrior: Industry, Empire and the Royal Navy’s Iron Ships 1847-1860 Michael McTavish School of Graduate Studies Nipissing University North Bay, Ontario Abstract Between 1845 and 1860, the Royal Navy engaged in transitioning from wooden hull construction to those built of iron. Though HMS Warrior has consistently been identified as the first successful British iron ship of war, the role of the economy, diplomacy, politics and industry in the developmental process of Warrior has not been fully developed in the historiography. Previous work on the Royal Navy’s nineteenth century trajectory has inordinately focused on outdated methodologies of military history. These historians neglected to reconcile the role played by the Admiralty in politics, diplomacy, industry and economy, and the part each of these elements played in the creation of a cohesive maritime defense of the British Empire. Warrior represents the collective manifestation of the aforementioned four themes out of the British Empire of the long nineteenth century. How these forces helped shape and reshape the military’s response to various challenges against the British Empire’s will be explored through sources like The Times and The United Service Magazine, the yearly Naval Estimates as a part of the broader Parliamentary Budget, and the various records of the private shipbuilding companies involved in the early iron construction for the Royal Navy and private commercial use. The role played by the Admiralty in the maintenance and defense of the British imperial domain is critically important to fully understand the relationship between the Royal Navy and the British Empire during the middle of the nineteenth century.
