THE SECRETARY-GENERAL

12 March 1999

Dear Lady Menuhin,

I just learnt with profound sorrow the sudden passing away of Sir Yehudi Menuhin.

It was in March 1997 that we met briefly in the lobby of the Cape Sun Hotel in Cape Town, South Africa for the first time. He expressed great support for the United Nations and kind words to me personally and wished me well as I embarked on my new role as Secretary-General of the United Nations. During our most recent meeting in Davos, Switzerland, Sir Yehudi continued to express his support for the work that we are doing in the United Nations to achieve peace and progress in the world. Although our encounters in South Africa and Switzerland were brief, they were nevertheless warm and unforgettable.

Sir Yehudi was a great human being who accomplished a great deal as an individual artist and gave infinitely to all of humanity during his life-long devotion to music. His contributions transcended the artificial barriers of politics, language and culture. The kinds of Sir Yehudi are a rare gift to humanity. The whole world is the poorer by his death.

On behalf of the United Nations and on my own behalf, I express our most sincere condolences to you and the rest of Sir Yehudi's family.

Yours sincerely,

Kofi A. Annan
