First Year Out Survey Report

Dear Members of the TCNJ Campus Community:

The following is a report detailing the post-graduation activity of the Class of 2018. Individuals who completed a degree in August 2017, December 2017 and May 2018 were contacted to complete the survey through email, LinkedIn, and Facebook. Data was available for 1,073/1,564 (68.6%) of Class of 2018 graduates. In an effort to respond to declining response rates, the Department of Career & Leadership Development incorporated data obtained through immediate response surveys from the School of Business, the School of Engineering, the School of Arts & Communication, data from the Admissions Clearinghouse, and from professional online sites such as LinkedIn and G Plus.

Some interesting outcomes involve: • As a result of the information obtained, graduate and employment information was available for 1,073 graduates. 98.5% (1,057/1,073) were employed full-time or part-time and/or attending graduate/professional school. 1.5% (16/1,073) were not working or attending graduate/professional school.

• Beyond TCNJ, the top graduate schools students are attending are Rutgers University, University, Rowan University, and Columbia University • The top employers included Penn Medicine Health, PwC, Capital Health, Johnson & Johnson, JP Morgan Chase & Co., Bank of America, Hamilton Township School District, West Windsor/Plainsboro School District, Bloomberg, AT&T, and Lockheed Martin. • The average starting salary for college graduates remains flat for 2018 graduates, with the Hay Group reporting an average starting salary of $50,390, up 2.8 percent from $49,000 in 2017. The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) reported similar findings, citing an overall average salary of $50,944 for the Class of 2018, a 0.8% increase from 2017. The average salary for TCNJ’s Class of 2018 graduates was $57,500, which is 14.1% above the starting salary reported by the Hay Group, 12.9% above the starting salary reported by NACE, and 2.3% above the starting salary for TCNJ’s Class of 2017. There was a statistically significant difference in overall salary between males ($60,700) and females ($55,150). • While attending TCNJ, 73.3% (562/767) reported having at least one internship with 49.3% (378/767) participating in an internship for 2 or more semesters.

To provide you with a full picture of what has happened to our graduates, information has been further analyzed overall and by school. Data includes employment, graduate/professional school, and salary.

Take a Look at Our 2018 TCNJ Alumni

Post-Graduation Activity Summary

Data were available for 1,073 out of 1,564 (68.6%) graduates. In an effort to respond to declining response rates, the Department of Career & Leadership Development incorporated data obtained through immediate response surveys from the School of Business, the School of Engineering, the School of Arts & Communication, data from the Admissions Clearinghouse, and from professional online sites such as LinkedIn and G Plus. Information on employment and graduate school was obtained for all 1,073 contributors. 98.5% (1,057/1,073) were employed full-time or part-time and/or attending graduate/professional school while 1.5% (16/1,073) were not working or attending graduate/professional school. In August 2018, the U.S. Department of Labor reported an unemployment rate of 2.1% for college graduates. We have elected to use the word contributors to describe the responses.

Experiential Learning/Internships

73.3% (562/767) participated in an internship for one or more semesters. This is up 1.7% from the Class of 2017. Of this group, 67.3% (378/562) had an internship for 2 or more semesters. This is up 4.2% from 2017. - 68.9% (339/492) secured at least one semester of a paid internship, an increase of 6.1% from 2017. - 63.8% (270/423) secured an internship for at least one semester for academic credit, an increase of 2.2% from 2017. - 40.6% (205/505) secured employment after graduation through their internship, an increase of 4.4% from 2017.

Other Experiential Opportunities Included:

27.6% (218/789) participated in one or more semesters of student teaching, a 2.4% increase from 2017. 14.4% (90/625) participated in one or more clinical experiences, a 6% increase from 2017. 8.0% (50/625) participated in MUSE, a 1.2% decrease from 2017. 29.8% (213/715) participated in TCNJ sponsored research, a 3% decrease from 2017. 8.1% (48/596) participated in non-TCNJ sponsored research, a 2.2% decrease from 2017. 186/754 (24.7%) contributors indicated participating in a study abroad experience. 25 contributors studied abroad in Italy, 24 in Germany, 21 in England, 19 in Spain, 9 in Australia, 5 in Ghana, 4 in Chile, 4 in Haiti, 4 in Ireland, 3 in Czech Republic, 3 in Ecuador, 3 in South Africa, 3 in Thailand, 2 in Greece, 2 in Japan, 1 in Panama, 1 in Romania, and 1 in South Korea.

TCNJ Career Preparation & Graduate Expectations

500 contributors rated how well they felt TCNJ prepared them for their careers. 95.0% (475/500) rated their preparedness between Average and Excellent and, of this group, 78.9% (375/475) rated their preparedness between Above Average and Excellent.

Top Employers – We obtained information on 779 graduates (49.8% of the Class of 2018) as to the name of their employer. The Top Employers were:

4 Salary Information

• The average salary for graduates of the Class of 2018 was $57,500. This was a 2.3% increase from 2017. There was a statistically significance difference in overall salary between males ($60,700) and females ($55,150). Average salaries by school:

273/1,073 (25.4%) attended graduate school within the first year. 66.4% (712/1,073) were not attending graduate/professional school and 8.2% (88/1,073) were undecided regarding attending. Based on the data available for 263 graduates, the Top Graduate/Professional Schools were:

Incorporating these sources, data was obtained from a total of 1,073/1,564 (68.6%) graduates.

POST GRADUATION ACTIVITY As a result of the information obtained, employment and graduate school information was available for 1,073 graduates. 98.5% (1,057/1,073) were employed full-time or part-time and/or attending graduate/professional school while 1.5% (16/1,073) were not working or attending graduate/professional school.

Employment

69.3% (744/1,073) were employed full-time in the first year after graduation and not attending graduate school. 3.7% (40/1,073) were employed part-time and not attending graduate school.

25.4% (273/1,073) were attending graduate school. Of those attending graduate school, 22.3% (61/273) were employed full-time, 22.3% (61/273) were employed part-time, and 55.4% (151/273) were attending graduate school only. 8.2% (88/1,073) were undecided as to whether they would attend.

Of the employed graduates not attending graduate school, 82.1% (644/784) were not seeking further employment.

Of the 16 (1.5%) graduates who were truly unemployed (not actively working or attending graduate school), 13 were actively searching for jobs.

Employment Type

Students pursue occupations in a variety of functions. 659 contributors indicated that they worked in the following areas:

Average Salaries

Of the 805 graduates who were currently employed full time, salary information was obtained for 78.3% (630/805). All salary information is calculated based on ranges of salary values from $24,999 and under to $110,000 and over. The range utilizes intervals of $4,999. The average salary for the Class of 2018 contributors was $57,500. There was a statistically significance difference in overall salary between males ($60,700) and females ($55,150).

Work Locations Of the 805 graduates that work full time, 95.3% (767/805) provided the location of their employment. The top states for work location were New Jersey with 567 (73.9%) graduates, New York with 108 (14.1%) graduates, and Pennsylvania with 40 (5.2%) graduates. 4 contributors reported working outside of the country in the following locations: Denmark, Ecuador, Japan, and Thailand.

Number of Job Offers

Of the 805 graduates that are currently employed full time, 80.9% (651/805) provided information regarding the number of job offers they received. 95.5% (622/651) received at least one offer. 56.1% (365/651) received two or more job offers, a 3.0% increase from 2017.

Academic Major and Position Obtained

Of the 805 graduates that are currently employed full time, 82.7% (666/805) provided information regarding the relationship between their undergraduate major and their current position. Of those 666:

66.7% (444/666) of contributors indicated a direct relationship between their academic major and the position they obtained. 26.9% (179/666) of contributors indicated an indirect relationship between their academic major and the position they obtained. 6.4% (43/666) of contributors indicated there was no relationship between their academic major and the position they obtained.

67.5% (499/739) of contributors reported as a leader within their area of interest or organization. The following contributors agreed or strongly agreed they gained the following leadership skillsets from their campus involvement:

7 TCNJ’s Preparation of Students for Their Careers

Of the 805 contributors that are employed full time, 62.1% (500/805) rated how they felt TCNJ prepared them for their careers based on a 5-point Likert scale (Poor = 1, Excellent = 5). 75.0% reported career preparedness to be above average or excellent.

Graduate/Professional School

Current Graduate/Professional School Attendance

25.4% (273/1,073) are currently attending graduate school or are accepted and will attend. 80.2% (219/273) provided the number of programs to which they were accepted. 48.4% (106/219) of contributors indicated they received 2 or more offers.

• 51.6% (113/219) received one acceptance to graduate/professional school; • 17.4% (38/219) received two acceptances to graduate/professional school; • 10.5% (23/219) received three acceptances to graduate/professional school; • 7.3% (16/219) received four acceptances to graduate/professional school; • 13.2% (29/219) received five or more acceptances to graduate/professional school.

Future Plans for Graduate Study

44.2% (474/1,073) indicated whether or not they had plans for future graduate study. Their plans to attend graduate school and when are listed in the table below:

54.4% (584/1,073) indicated that they were considering pursuing additional degrees in the future, even if they didn’t have current plans on attending graduate school. Those degrees are listed in the table below:

8 TCNJ’s Preparation of Students for Graduate/Professional School

Of the 273 contributors attending graduate/professional school, 76.6% (209/273) rated how well they felt TCNJ had prepared them for it. Their ratings, based on a 5-point Likert scale (Poor = 1, Excellent = 5), can be seen in the table below:

Major and Program Relationship

85.0% (232/273) of contributors answered the question if their graduate/professional school was directly related, indirectly related, or not related to their undergraduate field of study.

Graduate/Professional School & Assistance

Of the 217 contributors who answered the question of whether they are receiving financial assistance, 85 (39.2%) reported they received financial assistance.

73.3% (55/75) received partial tuition reimbursement;

− 47.3% (26/55) of those receiving partial tuition reimbursement are working either part-time or full-time.

31.9% (23/72) received full tuition reimbursement;

− 8.7% (2/23) of those receiving full tuition reimbursement are working either part-time or full-time.

27.3% (18/66) received medical benefits;

7.8% (5/64) received an hourly rate position;

− 60.0% (3/5) of those receiving an hourly pay rate are working either part-time or full-time.

31.4% (22/70) received a stipend;

− 9.1% (2/22) of those receiving an hourly pay rate are working either part-time or full-time.

10.8% (7/65) received travel advantages.

48.6% (122/251) are working either full-time or part-time.

The average stipend amount reported by 19 contributors was $26,254.
