Fraserburgh FC Official Matchday Programme

Today we welcome the players, management, officials and supporters of Forres Mechanics FC to Bellslea Park for our Press & Journal Highland League tie.

Last week we had a hard fought win over Clach and its fair to say that the two late goals put a different completion on the result but by the same token the young goalkeeper for the visitors had some cracking saves in the first half.

The down side was Willie West getting sent off but the None of this stupid minute’s applause because let’s be conditions didn’t help and he was very unlucky. The winning margin against Clachnacuddin was decisive in the end but they made things very difficult until the last few minutes. How pleased were you with the performance on the day? I think over the 90 minutes we did more than enough to merit the win. We had the perfect start and went ahead in the first minute and then looked to kick on from there. We created more chances but unfortunately we couldn't take them. Then one long ball up the park caught us out and they managed to get an equaliser. Second half we came out with a desire to win the game and credit to the guys as we managed to get the important next goal and go 2-1 up with Dean getting a couple of late goals to put the game to bed. On the whole I was happy with what I got. The park did cut up will do our best to get him on board. I am still looking at quite bad so it was not the place to try and play slick possibly taking one if not two players in for next season. passing on but we managed to get the ball forward and Marc Lawrence is doing well at Peterhead so it is then took the chances which came our way. Clach are a unlikely that he will return on loan. Johnny Chalmers is good young side so to take 6 points off them this season now in Australia and could be there until after is very pleasing. Christmas. That plus at least two more players going to be missing large chunks of the season due to work You said in your last programme notes that some of commitments means that I must look to bringing other the fringe players in the first team squad would get a players in. I will look around other clubs to see what is chance to stake a claim for a more regular spot. Stuart available but I also have a great crop of young players Taylor and Aidan Combe both started the game, will coming through so do not be surprised if you see some of others like Cameron Buchan and Steven Davidson see them in my squad for next term more game time as the season draws to a close?

Football is a squad game and everyone will play a part This is the first match of a double header against at some stage in the season so you have to take your Forres Mechanics. How difficult is it playing the same chance when it is given to you. Aidan Combe has not team back to back and what type of a game are you been a regular starter this season but he has scored 3 expecting against Charlie Rowley's side? goals in 4 appearances so he has earned his right to I do not particularly like playing the same team two play. The other guys will get their chance too as there weeks in a row because it is very rare that one team are always injuries and suspensions which are part of the wins both games and takes 6 points. There is nearly game. We have our fixtures now until the end of the always a different outcome in each game. Forres are a season, which include a couple of Wednesday night strong physical team which has been one of their games, so we will need everyone to pull together to get strengths for years, however do not be fooled by this the results. At this stage of the season, players will start because they have plenty of players who on their day to get tired so it is my job to gauge each player and can play as good football as anyone. I am a fan of Liam then pick a team based on who is at their best. Baxter and feel that he has been a very good striker for a few years now. He will certainly be one whom I tell With the addition of Jamie Beagrie to the squad for the lads to try and keep quiet. It was not that long ago next season and the signings of Michael Rae and Paul that Forres won the Highland League so there are still Campbell recently how close are you to having the some players in their squad today who have a league

It will simply be down to us to make sure we perform at Our aim is to challenge the top 4 in the league. I am not our best and hopefully keep the 3 points at Bellslea. going to come out here and say our aim next season is to Today we will both go hammer and tongs at each other, win the league because we know that this is difficult trying to get a win, then next week it may be more with the finances etc of other clubs, however we do tactical as both Charlie and I will have seen each teams want to give it a go so our goal for next season will strengths and weaknesses and try to exploit those. simply be to finish higher than we do this term. I do not Forres had a poor result on Wednesday so I fully expect want to put any more pressure on the lads. We will just them to come here and look to get back to winning

There is no doubt the addition of forward to as we have to keep getting results if our aim Jamie will be a huge step forward for us but I am not of finishing in the top 6 is going to be achievable. going to rest on my laurels. If someone else becomes available who I think will take us on as a club then we All the Best, Mark.

Forres Mechanics fc player profiles STUART KNIGHT – First choice goalkeeper for the last few seasons. Formerly with Elgin City’s youths, he joined Mechanics from Deveronvale, his commanding performances undoubtedly inspire confidence in defenders around him. His determination to win is plain for all to see. GRAEME GRANT – In his second spell at Mechanics following a brief one at Huntly, central defender “Grapies” reads the game well & can change defence into attack in an instant. Usually acts as team captain, he celebrates a well deserved Testimonial season in 2015/16. SIMON ALLAN – Simon developed into a key player in defence and attack for Forres over the past few years since signing from Forres

Thistle. Tenacious in the tackle, he regularly takes powerful free kicks and penalties and his long throw-ins can trouble any defence. ROSS MACPHERSON – “Chucky” is a tough competitor in the middle of the park. Signed from Forres Thistle at the start of season 2008/09, he showed improvement with each match he plays. On the rare occasion when injury or suspension has ruled him out of the side his influence in the middle of the park is clearly missed. Became only the second Mechanics captain to lift the Highland League trophy in season 2011/12. SCOTT MOORE – Another local signed from Forres Thistle, now in his second spell at the club since returning from playing in Australia, attacking midfielder Scott initially found it hard to break into the side. Now a regular starter, his enthusiasm and tenacious style of play cause opponents no end of trouble. GRAHAM FRASER – 23 year old twin of striker Lee, Burghead based Graham is a tall, commanding defender, as good with the ball at his feet as he is in the air, pacy up either wing and packing a powerful shot. Having come through Ross County’s Youth programme, he joined Forres Mechanics at the start of season 2010/11, immediately slotting into the side and attracting interest from senior clubs. Recently returned to the squad following a long spell out after knee surgery.

LEE FRASER – Tall, imposing striker who started to find the net on a regular basis as soon as he arrived at the club at the start of 2010/11. Like his twin Graham, he looks destined for a higher level of football, but all at Mosset Park are delighted that both Frasers have signed long term deals at the club. Up at the top of the League’s goal-scoring charts he had just returned from a hamstring injury at the turn of the 2011/12, only to suffer a broken kneecap in a freak training accident which ruled him out for the remainder of that season and most of 2012/13. Now back to full match fitness, Mosset Park fans welcomed the return of one of the HFL’s most feared strikers and he won the Programme’s Man of the Match award last season. STEVEN FRASER – Aberdeen based Forres “loon” Stephen joined Mechanics towards the end of season 2011/12 from Rothes, where he had been club captain. The tall, pacy defender who came through Elgin City’s Youth programme is more than capable of filling any position in the back four should he be called upon. Returned from a short term transfer to Rothes, he demonstrated a lot of improvement last season with an impressive scoring run towards the end. CRAIG McGOVERN – 24 year-old Fochabers based Craig is a pacy left-sided midfielder who has featured extensively for Keith FC for a couple of seasons after moving up from their Youth side. Impressive performances against Mechanics convinced Charlie Rowley that he could do a job at Mosset Park and increase his options on the left flank, so he was recruited at the start of season 2012/13. A constant threat to opposing defences, turning defence into attack in an instant, strong in the tackle and deceptively powerful in the air. DREW HOWARD – Promising young central midfielder who joined the First Team squad last season having progressed through the club’s Youth programme. Debuted in the 2-0 victory at Inverurie back in February last year and listed as substitute on a number of occasions – definitely one to watch for the future. DUNCAN JONES – Another player who Rowley admired for quite a while, Duncan played trials for Mechanics on a number of occasions over the past few years but his work with Highland Constabulary restricted his availability. Now able to commit to the club, this experienced former Clachnacuddin and Nairn County midfielder has recently signed a further one year extension to his contract with Mechanics. An experienced midfielder who reads the game well and has the ability to turn defence into attack with great distribution and powerful free kicks. ROSS PATERSON – Teenage product of Mechanics Youth Programme, put pen to paper for Mechanics once again this season, though his

University studies limit his availability. Diminutive in height, he surprised many spectators with impressive performances last pre-season and he is another definitely one to watch out for in the future. PAUL SMITH – Pacy left sided defender signed from Inverness City in close season 2014. Initially flagged up by Duncan Jones, Paul agreed to make the step up to the Highland League and he immediately fitted well into the new look Mechanics defence. Enjoys pressing forward to great effect, never misses the chance for a snap shot at goal. Currently on loan back at Inverness City till the end of the season. STUART SOANE – Joined the club in time to debut in the NoS Cup semi final at Nairn two seasons ago, Inverness based Soane signed a three year deal following a month loan deal from Formartine Utd. Experienced midfielder who spent a number of seasons at Peterhead, Inverness CT and Huntly. Last season’s top scorer for Mechanics and winner of the Supporters Player of the Year. Made a welcome comeback to the squad following a long spell out with a niggling injury. FRASER FORBES - Close season signing from Elgin City, where he was a product of their Youth Development programme. A pacy striker with a bright future in the game, Fraser already has a season of Highland League experience under his belt following a loan spell at Buckie Thistle.

DACHI KHUTSISHVILI – Dachi grew up in Milan and represented Georgia at U17 level before moving to the UK. He was a member of ICT’s U20 squad before a four month spell at Elgin City at the end of 2013. Signed following a triallist appearance at Lossiemouth in August last year, he made an instant impact with a sublime goal from a free kick at Keith the following Saturday. Comfortable in any midfield position, he is an exciting prospect for the Mosset Park club. Recently signed a further year extension to his Mechanics contract. BRANDON HUTCHESON - Recruited from Mechanics Youth Programme. Made a few appearances off the bench last season and definitely one to watch for the future. Currently on loan at local Junior side Forres Thistle FC. STEVEN SIMPSON - Goalkeeping cover, recruited from the Mechanics Youth Programme. Currently understudy to Stuart Knight, but ready to step in should the need arise. Also works as Groundsman at Mosset Park. CONNOR McIVER - Recruited from Mechanics Youth Programme. Has featured on the bench, keenly awaiting his chance to break into the First team. He is another of the squad’s youngsters currently on loan at Forres Thistle. JAMIE PICK - Recruited from Mechanics Youth Programme. Another awaiting his chance from the bench, made a brief appearance at Turriff towards the end of last season and will surely feature again. LIAM BAXTER – First of this close season’s signings, coming to the club from Buckie Thistle. A prolific goal-scorer who previously spent five successful seasons at Brora Rangers, where he first came to the attention of the Forres Management Team. Already leading the club’s goal- scoring stats, Mosset Park fans will relish seeing him link up with the imposing Lee Fraser up front. GORDON FINLAYSON – Right sided defender Gordon joins Mechanics from Elgin City, having impressed when the two sides met in the Scottish Cup last season. A product of the Ross County Youth Programme, he is a welcome addition to the club’s defensive roster, and his pace and skill up the right flank can worry any opposition. AARON McLELLAN – Further defensive options from Aaron, who joins Mechanics from local Junior side Forres Thistle, where he was their Player of the Year last season. His attitude at the “Jags” impressed Charlie Rowley, so he has been offered the opportunity to step up a grade to the Highland League. CHRIS ROSS – Latest addition to the Mechanics squad, Chris just signed a one year contract at the end of August, having featured well in pre- season and as a triallist. Spent a few seasons at Clachnacuddin before undergoing knee surgery a couple of years ago. Now fully recovered, he adds to the options in Mechanics midfield area.

Match Report Vs clachnacuddin

Press & Journal Scottish Highland Football League, Saturday 12th March 2016, Fraserburgh v Clachnacuddin, Bellslea Park, Fraserburgh

The Broch took the lead after a free kick by Graham Johnston into the six yard box was headed home by Willie West in the first minute. It was nearly two five minutes later when another Johnston free kick from 20 yards was touched onto the post by keeper McDonald and when the ball eventually rebounded into the path of West the keeper was there to pull of a save at point blank range.

On 9 minutes Aidan Combe flicked the ball into West’s path and he drove into the box before clipping the ball to the far post which the keeper tipped over. Clach threatened after 22 minutes when Ian Penwright found Gordon Morrison but the striker shot tamely at Joe Barbour.

Two minutes later a ball over the Broch defence found Morrison in space and he tried to lob Barbour but his effort went wide. On 27 minutes Johnston played the ball down the left wing to Ryan Cowie who crossed for Paul Campbell and his effort was saved by the Clach keeper from 8 yards out.

Clach levelled after 30 minutes when a ball forward on the right to Penwright was crossed into the middle for Morrison to sweep the ball past Barbour. Clach almost grabbed a second when good work between Blair Lawrie and Morrison saw the former shoot into the side netting from a good position. Just before the break Johnston and Dean Cowie combined well to set up Combe but McDonald was out bravely to block the effort.

Half Time: Fraserburgh 1-1 Clachnacuddin

The Broch came out and forced tow early corners and from the second one Dean Cowie clipped the ball back into the danger zone where Russell McBride saw his half volley go just over. Five minutes later the Broch legend powered home a header from 6 yards from a Ryan Cowie free kick on the left wing to put the Broch back into the lead.

Clach had a chance to level on 53 minutes when a free kick outside the box by Lawrie was tipped round the post by Barbour. From the resultant corner Stuart Leslie fired wide. Two minutes later Johnston had a great chance at the other end after beating the Clach defence but shot straight at McDonald. On 57 minutes Stuart Taylor’s long ball into the Clach box was met by Ryan Christie but his header smacked of the post and was cleared to safety.

The Broch were buzzing now and a quick throw by Johnston to west was returned to the striker he cut into the box and fired a rasping drive which the keeper turned away. Clach almost levelled on 69 minutes when a corner to the back post was met by David McGurk but he saw his close range effort blocked on the line by Combe.

Two minutes later Johnston fired in a free kick from the right which went right through the Clach six yard box but no one was on hand to get a touch. Clach were next to have a chance on 75 minutes when the broke down the left and the cross found Morrison who teed up Lawrie but Barbour was equal to the effort tipping it over. At the other end Campbell found space down the left channel and crossed to Dean Cowie but he blazed the ball well over.

The Broch were reduced to ten men on 81 minutes when West was ordered off for his second booking. Dean Cowie then went close from a Ryan Cowie free kick before Clach were reduced to ten men with a minute left McGurk getting his second caution for hauling down Campbell outside the box. Dean Cowie added insult to injury curling home from 20 yards. The same player made it 4-1 after Campbell set him free in injury time and he ran on and chipped the Clach keeper with the ball clipping the underside of the bar before crossing the line.
