THE CRESCENT /WINTER 1985-86 29 Introduce your legacy

A legacy is entitled to special attention during rush. She is not entitled to an automatic bid because she is a legacy nor is she required to pledge a particular sorority. Her wish is to be accepted as a member because of her qualities and not just because she hap pens to be a legacy.

Pledging qualified women is a shared responsibility of collegians and alumnae. They share the responsibil ity of promoting Gamma Phi Beta to the legacy with out making promises that may not be kept.

Alumnae can help legacies by: sending the legacy introduction form to the appropriate Gamma Phi Beta chapter; promoting the Greek system and emphasizing the lifetime commitment; helping the legacy obtain recommendations for all sororities at her chosen school; and making no promises. Our collegiate chapters have the right to choose their own members.

Collegians can help legacies by: giving legacies special consideration and the courtesy of at least one invitation to a rush party, and being fair in setting membership selection stan Christine Cone and Traci Scarborough wonder if they will measure up as in a rush week. THE CRESCENT /WINTER 1985-86 43 I he newest lights on Broadway in 1985 were lighted for Mary Beth Peil (Northwestern), who has just completed a run as Anna Leonowens, the "1" of "The King and 1." The story of how Mary Beth changed career goals from opera to musical theater and how she was cho sen by "The King," the late Yul Brynner, is fascinating and dramatic.

A fast starter in the opera world, Mary Beth won first prize in the Metropolitan Opera auditions after college graduation and toured with the Met's national com pany, as well as singing a full calendar of oratorios and concerts. During the tour she met her husband, Jerry Kirkbride, a clarinetist in the orchestra, and took time out to stay home and be a mother to Michael, 17, and Gwyneth, 12. She says 10 years of babies, diapers and housework went by before she accepted an oppor tunity to play Alma Winemiller in the world premiere of the opera "Summer and Smoke." She created the role in 1971 with the St. Paul Opera, then played it again in 1980 with the Chicago Opera Theater where it was adapted and restaged for television. The telecast over PBS-TV two years after the taping won her national acclaim for both singing and acting.

Admitting that her opera background had made her a snob about musical theater until she realized that the roles she enjoyed most involved acting, Mary Beth began to put out feelers which led to a role in "Kiss Me Kate" in Minneapolis. "It was becoming more and more obvious that acting was taking over. At the end of a month's run as Kate, 1 was truly changed. It was like being born again. The years working on my voice were paying off in the role which required singing, a Gamma Phi Beta Mary Beth Piel appeared in "The King and I" with Yul lot of screaming histrionics and a lot of talking. "It was a wonderful feeling, and 1 had never felt that Musical theater is not easier than opera despite as an opera singer, always being very careful and what one might think, Mary Beth says. "1 discovered afraid of overextending. 1 felt a whole shift in my phys that musical theater is, first of all, more athletic, ical and mental energies. I could use everything." because I have to be in much better shape to do eight Her chance to play Anna came less than three weeks shows each week and be on my feet all the time with a after she completed her run in Minneapolis. "It all hap lot of movement involved. For musical theater your pened in a 24-hour period," she says. Hearing of the power of concentration has to be much stronger to audition from a friend, she sang in New York early on keep it fresh and just to keep it going. After her 19-month, nationwide tour with "The King Of Mary Beth, Brynner told friends she was the best and I," Mary Beth discovered her children had become Anna he ever performed with, including Gertrude Law more independent, learning to function on their own, rence, who commissioned Rodgers and Hammerstein and her husband learned how to cook, sew and pay to create the role for her and originated it on Broad bills.
