Some significant facts IV.a) 1982-83. Officialization and subsequent loss of the official validation of the Valencian titles of Lo Rat Penat, which follow the autochthonist linguistic norms (Normes d’El Puig) In 1949, Lo Rat Penat officially opens the Section of Valencian Language and Culture Courses (Secció de Cursos de Llengua i Cultura Valencianes). During all these years the purpose of the courses has remained valid: to teach and to spread the Valencian language. The language titles of Lo Rat Penat were official in the early 80’s. The teachers who had this title had the official qualification to teach Valencian in the schools. However this titles stopped being official a short time later, as in the autonomic elections of 1982 the governing political party changed and they removed the officiality of them because of ideological reasons. IV.a.1 Officialization of the titles of Lo Rat Penat (DOGV 30/08/1982) In this Official Gazette of the Valencian Government (DOGV) are enumerated the conditions that teachers must meet to be able to teach classes of Valencian for the course 1982-1983. One of the necessary requirements is to be in possession of the qualification for teaching of Valencian, that could be obtained in Lo Rat Penat or the Grup d’Acció Valencianista (according to the autochthonist linguistic codification, the Norms of El Puig, or Normes d’El Puig) and in other entities such as the Institut de Ciències de l’Educació (annexationist linguistic model).

National identity and symbols in Catalonia and 1 Spain In this paper, after an initial discussion about what identity means and how to measure it, I intend to review some studies and events in Spain in which identity issues arise. The conclusion will be reached that identities in Spain, in regard to people’s relationship with Spain itself and with Catalonia, are by no means shared, and the level of both stereotyping and prejudice, on the one hand, and of collective insecurity (even “self-hatred”) on the other, are, I claim, higher than in consolidated nation-states of western Europe, with the partial exceptions of the United Kingdom and Belgium. Let me from the outset say how honoured I am, in having been invited to deliver this paper, to follow in the footsteps of such outstanding Catalan academics as Mercè Ibarz, Antoni Segura, Joan F. Mira, Marta Pessarrodona, Miquel Berga … and those before them. The idea of dedicating what up till then had been the Fundació Congrés de Cultura lectures to the memory of Joan Gili (Barcelona 1907 - Oxford 1998) was an inspiration. Unlike some earlier Memorial lecturers, however, I was fortunate enough to have a special personal relationship with him and, of course, with his wife Elizabeth.

ARAGÓN AND VALÈNCIA Aragón and València “The jota is at its best with the scent of rosemary and fresh-plowed earth,” says the opening song on this CD. An infectious collection of danced and sung jotas, archaic threshing songs, May courting songs, struck zither tunes, raucous shawms and lyrical strings, travelling down from the mountains of Aragón to the fertile coast of València. The Spanish Recordings Alan Lomax made these historic recordings in 1952 while traveling for months through Spanish villages, under formidable physical and political circumstances, during the Franco regime. Covering the breadth of Spain, these songs and dance melodies constitute a portrait of rural Spain’s richly varied musical life, dispelling the common stereotypes of Spanish folk music. Revista de Recerca i Formació en Antropologia, 20(2): 271-289 (2015) (http://revistes.uab.cat/periferia ) Translated from Catalan by Mary Black Abstract When making use of the biographical method, it is quite common to collect stories directly from those who lived the narrated events. Those stories can be focused on either their entire life or specific aspects that the researcher considers relevant or important. There is an unwavering fact related to the research carried out on the recovery of the memory of Valencian immigrants to the United States of America during the first two decades of the 20th century: those who emigrated have already passed away. One may think that their stories have also disappeared with them. However, thanks to exhaustive work with their descendants (sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters, nephews and nieces) making use of techniques that are closely related to this methodology (biographical interviews, analysis of correspondence and other documents such as photographs), it is still possible to recover assets that otherwise would have ended up disappearing. The work presented here is organised around several specific issues. If someone narrates another’s a life, what do they really remember? How do they remember it? How do they transmit it? Key words: biographical method, Valencian immigrants in USA, recovered memory, emigrants’ descendants.

  • 3 Sociolinguistic Framework of the Valencian Language
The Charter and the Valencian language: the point of view of the discriminated Valencian speakers 3 Sociolinguistic framework of the Valencian language Valencian is a Romanic language variety which is spoken in most of the historic Kingdom of Valéncia, today officially the Valencian Community, of which it is currently co-official language together with Spanish. Since the 14th century, this variety has been considered spontaneously, both by Valencians and by foreigners, as the Valencian language, with a personality of its own into its surrounding geographical area. Notwithstanding, at the same time, an old brotherhood was recognized with other linguistic varieties that now are usually included in the Occitano-Romance or Eastern Ibero-Romance diasystem (along with Catalan, Balearic, the various Occitan modalities…), which traditionally received the common name of “Limousin.” Anyway, “valencià”, “llengua valenciana” or “idioma valencià” are the denominations that the speakers of the whole Valencian territory have applied historically, and currently apply, spontaneously, to their own language. This dichotomy has conditioned the historical development of the Valencian language regarding its characterization as a language, the definition of its literary model and, in most recent dates, its standard model. This characterization has not been exempted, especially in the last century, from external pressures, both from the Spanish government and the Catalan nationalist movement, in order to opt for a favorable view of both Spanish and Catalan sustained thesis, mostly coincident in denying the personality of the Valencian language and supporting its consideration as a mere dialect. These external pressures have not so far eroded the still majority sociolinguistic consciousness of the Valencian people who believe that Valencian and Catalan are two different languages, as indicated by various sociological surveys –see Annex I–, in a transversal perception of the whole society, regardless of ideologies or geographic origin.

  • Dialect of Catalan Or Autonomous Language?
Annals of Language and Literature Volume 3, Issue 2, 2019, PP 9-18 ISSN 2637-5869 The Origins of Catalan, the Valencian: Dialect of Catalan or Autonomous Language? Ana Montaner Bueno, Andrés Montaner Bueno* Department of Language and Literature Didactics, University of Murcia, Spain *Corresponding Author: Andrés Montaner Bueno, Department of Language and Literature Didactics, University of Murcia, Spain, Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT When we talk about the spread of western Catalan beyond the Principality, we consider Valencian as a dialect of Catalan. This question has been one of the most discussed and controversial has aroused. That is why, we will treat the issue individually. To solve this dilemma, the first thing that we will consider is to define the concepts of language and dialect, to later consider the origins of the Valencian and from them to see if they really coincide with the characteristics that we have defined for the terms language and dialect. Keywords: Catalan; Valencian; language; dialect; autonomy; (in) dependence. THE CATALAN AND ITS DIALECTS Tarragona is divided between the eastern and western dialects. We understand by Catalan the language that for centuries has been spoken as vernacular in the Following its expansion to the south, beyond the Principality of Catalonia (Lérida, Barcelona, Principality, the western Catalan extends to the Tarragona and Gerona), in the valleys of non-Castilian part of the provinces of Castellón, Andorra, in the French department of the Valencia and Alicante, while the eastern branch Eastern Pyrenees, in the eastern part of Aragon, in the Balearic Islands. Following this criterion, in most of Valencia, in the Balearic Islands and we can reach a first dialectal division, which in the city of Alguer located on the northwest includes the following regions coast of the island of Sardinia.

  • Great and Small Trade in the Crown of Aragon. the Example of Valencia in the Late Middle Ages
GREAT AND SMALL TRADE IN THE CROWN OF ARAGON. THE EXAMPLE OF VALENCIA IN THE LATE MIDDLE AGES Date of reception: 21" of February, 2007 Final date of acceptance: 7"' of March, 2008 ABSTRACT The arlicle analyses the historiographic debate about the relations between great and small trade during the later Middle Ages. It does so emphasising the social and economic roie of the small trade, and the eiements of integration and coordina- tion between botb categories of rnarket. With this aim, the text takes the Crown of Aragon as its reference framework, especially the city and kingdom of Valencia, between the 13th and 15th centuries. Two types of maritime exchanges around the territory of Valencia are studied: one being short distance cabotage, between the ports in the kingdotn arid the capital; and the long-distance internatiorial trade that liuked Valencia with such countries as Italy or Portugal. Local trade, Internationai trade, Crown of Aragctn, Valencia, Later Middle Ages. Res iocalis, Res nationibus cornmunis, Corona Aragoniae, Valentia, Mediurn Aeuum inferius. 1. A historiographical debate and the case of Valencian maritime comrnerce For a long time now, the debate about the relations between great and small trade has marked part of the historiography of the mercantile world in Europe and the Mediterranean in the Late Middle ~ges'.It is evident that, in principle, the differentiation between tbe two types of commerce can start from the pliysical dis- tance -1ong or short- over which the trade was carried out. However, it is also known that, more or less consciously, research has used other elements to attribute a full nieaning to both economic sectors.

  • XVIII a Sea Change and Spain: 1857
XVIII A Sea Change and Spain 1857 (LETTERS 974 TO 1006) LEAVING NEw YoRK in the spring of 1857 Bryant was redeeming a promise made to his wife toward the end of his journey to the East in 1853: "I do not blame you for saying that you will never consent to my going to Europe again without you. I shall never for my part wish to do so." On each long excursion since he and Frances had taken their young daughters abroad in 1834 he had seen places they had hoped to visit together but had failed to do so because of his sudden recall to his newspaper. Now they would fill those gaps in shared experience. After revisiting Paris and Heidelberg, which by now Julia had nearly forgot ten, and exploring the Low Countries, familiar only to him, he would guide his family and his niece Estelle Ives across Switzerland and France to the Pyre nees and into Spain. Although their four-week sea voyage was occasionally rough, Bryant es caped seasickness for the first time, and they all enjoyed shipboard diversions shuffleboard and whist, guidebooks and novels, conundrums, and desultory conversations. Their fellow-passengers were congenial; Bryant particularly en joyed long conversations in French with a Catholic priest, Father Cenas, who had seen much of South America and was especially enthusiastic in his appraisal of Chileans, red and white. Reaching Le Havre at the end of May, the Bryants followed this itinerary: June I: Rouen; 2-19: Paris (excursion to Versailles); 20-22: Brussels; 23- 25: en route Amsterdam via Antwerp, Rotterdam, The Hague; 26-28: Amster dam (excursion to Zaandam); June 29-July 10: en route Heidelberg via Zwolle, Steenwijk, Leeuwarden, Groningen, Leer, Hamm, Deutz, Cologne, Bonn, Konigs winter, Koblenz, Wiesbaden, Frankfurt.

Three associations of language activists created in 2013 are responsible for this development. Given the hegemony of the belief that Catalan is the autochthonous language in the Balearic Islands, linguistic dissidents departed from a marginal social position and saw social media as the means for the materialisation, organisation and gradual crystallisation of their linguistic—and political—activism. Thus, this thesis analyses two years of social media activity of the three language activist associations, together with three interviews with activists and the participation in a highly symbolic activist event.
