Abstract According to recent sociological critiques, language planning activities are not neutral, but ideologically burdened, so that it seems that there is an urgent need to revise traditional views on language planning studies. The present work, in this sense, is an attempt to demonstrate the significant relationship between language planning and political ideology. I first give some preliminary definitions of the concepts of political ideology and language planning, and next discuss the potential link which some eminent scholars have already established between them, especially in relation to the doctrine of nationalism. The practical application of this initial hypothesis is achieved by means of a case study: language planning activities in relation to Catalan in Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands since the restoration of democracy in Spain in the mid- seventies. After a characterization of the linguistic, social, historical and political contexts, there follows a detailed and comprehensive analysis of language planning in each one of these territories. The study reveals how the influence of different political ideologies in the Catalan-speaking territories has been a major factor in the implementation of different language planning processes. The consequences of this fragmentation for the general health of Catalan at both status and corpus levels are next looked at. I conclude by arguing that the general situation in the Catalan-speaking regions requires a more political approach to language planning activities. It is important to note that this is a pioneering study in the field of Catalan language planning. It actually constitutes the first serious attempt to offer a systematic comparison of the different linguistic policies characterizing Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearics. Officialization and subsequent loss of the official validation of the Valencian titles of Lo Rat Penat, which follow the autochthonist linguistic norms (Normes d’El Puig) In 1949, Lo Rat Penat officially opens the Section of Valencian Language and Culture Courses (Secció de Cursos de Llengua i Cultura Valencianes). During all these years the purpose of the courses has remained valid: to teach and to spread the Valencian language. The language titles of Lo Rat Penat were official in the early 80’s. The teachers who had this title had the official qualification to teach Valencian in the schools. However this titles stopped being official a short time later, as in the autonomic elections of 1982 the governing political party changed and they removed the officiality of them because of ideological reasons. IV.a.1 Officialization of the titles of Lo Rat Penat (DOGV 30/08/1982) In this Official Gazette of the Valencian Government (DOGV) are enumerated the conditions that teachers must meet to be able to teach classes of Valencian for the course 1982-1983. One of the necessary requirements is to be in possession of the qualification for teaching of Valencian, that could be obtained in Lo Rat Penat or the Grup d’Acció Valencianista (according to the autochthonist linguistic codification, the Norms of El Puig, or Normes d’El Puig) and in other entities such as the Institut de Ciències de l’Educació (annexationist linguistic model).

National identity and symbols in Catalonia and 1 Spain In this paper, after an initial discussion about what identity means and how to measure it, I intend to review some studies and events in Spain in which identity issues arise. The conclusion will be reached that identities in Spain, in regard to people’s relationship with Spain itself and with Catalonia, are by no means shared, and the level of both stereotyping and prejudice, on the one hand, and of collective insecurity (even “self-hatred”) on the other, are, I claim, higher than in consolidated nation-states of western Europe, with the partial exceptions of the United Kingdom and Belgium. Such a realistic narrative form implies the likelihood of a minority reception right from the outset. The elimination of any fictional perspective is cur- rently a sort of literary suicide. Anyone who writes a book free of fantasies could be said to walk a fine line with their readers. The majority want to read simulations. The book also has a feminist air to it, which together with the ostentation of scepticism may initially cause readers to shy away from these pages. Obviously, I write this hypothesis from a masculine point of view and in it I’m attempting to express my first impression when the book I had in my hands was fresh out of the oven. Nonetheless, as I knew the writer person- ally I was inclined to take the theoretical risk. I have to admit here, that I opened the pages of this account out of curiosity about my friend, though this didn’t prevent a certain degree of scepticism on my part and a slight willingness to be distracted when faced with the first undigested page.

We will start from a historical neo-institutionalist approach and a methodology focused on historical analysis (path dependence and critical junctures). It will be centered on the changes produced in political parties, in terms of the Valencian cartelization and identity and its present position. This way, three working sub-hypotheses are to be explained: H1a: parties have had a continuity dynamic that has changed due to abrupt changes in the environment; H1b: political forces have taken advantage of these events to obtain electoral revenue and; H1c: current political parties are the result of changes experienced in the period studied. This complex hypothesis opens new fields of study for future research in terms of strategy, discourse and perceptions about these organizations.     Des de la perifèria: la construcció d’un símbol a través de la biografia de Raimon, de Joan Fuster Anna Esteve (Alacant) Summary: In 1964 Editorial Alcides published a biography of songwriter and singer Raimon written by Joan Fuster. This publication started the singer’s career within Catalonia and other Catalan-speaking regions. Therefore, in this article, I analyze the role and impact that this biography had on the construction of Valencian identity, since, from the periphery (Xàtiva, País Valencià), it became the center of a cultural movement called La Nova Cançó – which, in turn, helped to relaunch Catalan national identity. More concretely, and following initial, well-regarded scholarship (mainly the classical studies by Dosse and Madelénat), I examine the mechanisms and main features of the biographical genre used to construct Raimon’s identity. Those stories can be focused on either their entire life or specific aspects that the researcher considers relevant or important. There is an unwavering fact related to the research carried out on the recovery of the memory of Valencian immigrants to the United States of America during the first two decades of the 20th century: those who emigrated have already passed away. One may think that their stories have also disappeared with them. However, thanks to exhaustive work with their descendants (sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters, nephews and nieces) making use of techniques that are closely related to this methodology (biographical interviews, analysis of correspondence and other documents such as photographs), it is still possible to recover assets that otherwise would have ended up disappearing. The work presented here is organised around several specific issues. If someone narrates another’s a life, what do they really remember? How do they remember it? How do they transmit it? Joan Fuster’s essays constitute the observatory from which he examined the world, human beings and the life of society. In this observatory-cum-laboratory, Fuster used linguistics, culture, aesthetics, the sociopolitical context and history to construct his theory of social reality. He often focussed on literary phenomena – authors, genres, movements, styles and publishing processes – in the context of the vast process of social praxis, an ambit in which no element can be innocently isolated from any other, from the whole in which all things are interrelated. Fuster’s conception of literature thus adopts a perspective of complexity in which the idea of writers being socially engaged, of great influence at the time, is filtered by means of critical examination. This examination includes highly diverse and often contradictory factors that the author tries to balance against each other with an intellectual honesty that turns paradoxes into the driving force behind his writing. Based on a corpus of the author’s poetic texts selected from the 1950s, we can see the evolution of València’s presence, with its different nuances and intensities, in Estellés’ poetry. Books such as Llibre de meravelles treat spaces in diverse ways: the streets and the city itself are associated with fulfilled or repressed desire, while interior spaces are linked to death and anxiety. Likewise, the sources of this relationship between poetry and the city, as well as the network upon which it is built, are also analysed. Thus, journalism and cinema—especially the latter—become the main cultural systems that comprise the poetry of urban spaces.   • 3 Sociolinguistic Framework of the Valencian Language
    The Charter and the Valencian language: the point of view of the discriminated Valencian speakers 3 Sociolinguistic framework of the Valencian language Valencian is a Romanic language variety which is spoken in most of the historic Kingdom of Valéncia, today officially the Valencian Community, of which it is currently co-official language together with Spanish. Since the 14th century, this variety has been considered spontaneously, both by Valencians and by foreigners, as the Valencian language, with a personality of its own into its surrounding geographical area. Notwithstanding, at the same time, an old brotherhood was recognized with other linguistic varieties that now are usually included in the Occitano-Romance or Eastern Ibero-Romance diasystem (along with Catalan, Balearic, the various Occitan modalities…), which traditionally received the common name of “Limousin.” Anyway, “valencià”, “llengua valenciana” or “idioma valencià” are the denominations that the speakers of the whole Valencian territory have applied historically, and currently apply, spontaneously, to their own language. This dichotomy has conditioned the historical development of the Valencian language regarding its characterization as a language, the definition of its literary model and, in most recent dates, its standard model. This characterization has not been exempted, especially in the last century, from external pressures, both from the Spanish government and the Catalan nationalist movement, in order to opt for a favorable view of both Spanish and Catalan sustained thesis, mostly coincident in denying the personality of the Valencian language and supporting its consideration as a mere dialect. These external pressures have not so far eroded the still majority sociolinguistic consciousness of the Valencian people who believe that Valencian and Catalan are two different languages, as indicated by various sociological surveys –see Annex I–, in a transversal perception of the whole society, regardless of ideologies or geographic origin.
