Dothraki Dictionary ( Ver 3.1Test) The English-Dothraki Dictionary ( ver 3.1test) Written by Lajaki (Richard Littauer) www.dothraki.org May 24th, 2015 This is the English to Dothraki Dictionary. Dothraki is the language for the Dothraki peop- le, a nomadic war-mongering race that ride the aptly-named Dothraki Sea steppes in George R.R. Martin’s series, A Song of Ice and Fire. It was created by David Peterson, of the Language Creation Society, for the HBO adaptation of the series: all copyright belongs to HBO and the LCS. This is a dictionary only of publicly made information, from posts on the LCS blog, the original books, David Peterson’s blog and personal emails. Words which have been created by David Peterson are listed as DP - words created from the original book are listed as M. For more information, go to dothraki.org. Bold indicates an English definition. Italics indicate the Dothraki translation. There are now separate, numbered entries for each word that has different definitions for different parts of speech (root words are generally excluded from this practice). Plain text indicates grammatical categorization: parentheses indicate extra information. The IPA indicates the correct pronunciation, and should now be fully up-to-date. Some transcrip- h tions may have allomorphs, as in [qoj] or [q oj]. Transitivity for verbs is marked if known: vtr., for transitive verbs, and vin. for intransitive verbs; words marked v. are either unattested or ambitransitive, or their transitivity is unable to be deduced. Noun animacy is marked na. for animate nouns, and ni. for inanimate nouns. Nouns marked simply n. are at this time unattested for animacy. A capital letter ’B’, or lack thereof, following a part of speech indicates whether a word stem is ’type A’ or ’Type B’. Type B nouns generally take an epenthetic /e/ when they are shortened to stems, type A do not. All nouns whose stems end in /g/, /w/ or /q/ are type B, and there are some other type B endings as well. Note that the type A/B distinction applies to verbs as well. At this point in time, not all type B words are marked as such. Since the lexical form of Dothraki nouns and verbs are inflected forms, you will not see stems in this dictionary, except in a few rare cases. An attempt is being made to indicate the stems now, and it is hoped that eventually, all words with a questionable stem form will show the correct stem. If unsure of a stem form, consult the Dothraki vocabulary wiki. A few nouns are given with case endings when they have especially important meanings, or differ significantly in meaning from what the case ending normally implies. Stress markings have been removed, as the stress is fairly predictable, and will be more completely addressed in a future version of this dictionary. Numbers are also listed here where David Peterson specifically attested one-word terms for them. There is also now a numbers section in the appendices. The words herein should include all publicly known words. But if you find more words elsewhere, spot any errors or inconsistencies, or have any comments, please let me know on the forum. Thanks. 1 This dictionary is updated to match the Wiki edit of 24 May 2015, 07:21z. TEST MODE: Changes were recently made to the underlying code that drives the dictio- nary to remove a means of checking updates for accuracy, etc. offline. So, updates need to be checked online. If you see the word ’test’ following the version number, that means that the version is being actively updated, and is not considered ’released for general use’. Use test up- dates at your own risk. In general, the dictionary is in test mode for only an hour or so, every 7-10 days. Come back in an hour or so, and the dictionary should be back in ’general release’ state. NOTE ON ACCURACY: The English-Dothraki dictionary is generated automatically as a by-product of generating the Dothraki-English dictionary. All efforts are made to ensure the Dothraki-English dictionary is accurate and readable. This results in some entries in the English-Dothraki dictionary not being as useful as they could be. This is an artifact of the auto- generation process, and I cannot correct these discrepencies. Wherever I can, I try to edit things so they will be proper in both dictionaries, but I am not always successful in doing this. If you need to ensure something you see here is correct and authoritative, check either the Dothraki- English dictionary, or the Dothraki vocabulary wiki. If you see something here that is woefully wrong, please bring it to my attention on the dictionary thread of the Dothraki forums.     Gala Rebane ‘There is no word for thank you in Dothraki’: Language ideologies in Game of Thrones Abstract: This chapter discusses language ideologies in the acclaimed HBO series Game of Thrones (2011–2019) and the role which English vernaculars, foreign languages, and accented speech play in narrative characterisation of the protagonists. It focuses on language attitudes, including language stereotyping and linguistic discrimination, and shows the relationship the series establishes between varying degrees of language proficiency on one hand, and sophistication, culture, and humanness, on the other. Language issues in high fantasy With the release of the firstGame of Thrones (GoT) season in 2011, the fictional world of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy saga A Song of Ice and Fire (1996-)1 inscribed itself into the primary world of international view- ership, becoming nothing short of a collective myth. While, unsurprisingly, The Lord of the Rings is often cited among the chief sources of inspiration for Martin, his work was also a significant departure from established conventions of the high fantasy genre, as espoused by its founding father, Tolkien, and many other subsequent authors. Indeed, GoT (and before it A Song of Ice and Fire) veers from a monolithic moral soundness of eucatastrophic fairy epics2 to a degree of psychological and ideological twistedness rarely found in traditional heroic fantasy and entertainment media. Peterson will visit Georgia Southern University on February 9, 2017. His campus visit will provide both Writing and Linguistic majors as well as the public with an insightful overview of his career creating language for Hollywood films and hit television shows. Peterson will run a workshop on language creation for Writing and Linguistics majors (5 pm-6:15 pm in 1114 Newton), and deliver a lecture to audience campus wide (7 pm-8 pm in 1115 College of Education). Peterson offers a captivating overview of language creation, covering its history from Tolkien’s creations and Klingon to today’s thriving global community of conlangers. He presents the essential tools necessary for inventing and evolving new languages, using examples from a variety of languages including his creations, punctuated with references to everything from Star Wars to Michael Jackson.
