Article Gold mineralisation in the Surselva region, Canton Grisons, Switzerland JAFFE, Felice Abstract The Tavetsch Zwischenmassif and neighbouring Gotthard Massif in the Surselva region host 18 gold-bearing sulphide occurrences which have been investigated for the present study. In the Surselva region, the main rock constituting the Tavetsch Zwischenmassif (TZM) is a polymetamorphic sericite schist, which is accompanied by subordinate muscovite-sericite gneiss. The entire tectonic unit is affected by a strong vertical schistosity, which parallels its NE-SW elongation. The main ore minerals in these gold occurrences are pyrite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite. The mineralisation occurs in millimetric stringers and veinlets, everywhere concordant with the schistosity. Native gold is present as small particles measuring 2–50 μm, and generally associated with pyrite. Average grades are variable, but approximate 4–7 g/t Au, with several occurrences attaining 14 g/t Au. Silver contents of the gold are on the order of 20 wt%. A “bonanza” occurrence consists of a quartz vein coated by 1.4 kg of native gold. The origin of the gold is unknown. On the assumption that the sericite schists are derived from original felsic [...] Reference JAFFE, Felice. Gold mineralisation in the Surselva region, Canton Grisons, Switzerland. • All Roads Lead to Ticino.Pdf
All roads lead to Ticino! ticino.ch/wege-ins-tessin The itinerary becomes part of the holiday: discover the best one for an exciting trip! “It’s marvelously rich and beautiful and there is everything, from the alpine landscapes to the Mediterranean ones” with these words the Nobel prize winner Hermann Hesse described Ticino, his adoptive homeland. Glaciers and palm trees, lakes and mountains, ancient churches and modern architecture, silent valleys and vibrating cities generate an harmonic ambiance. As various as Ticino’s attitudes are, as various are the ways to reach the region: it doesn’t matter whether you come by plane, car, train, bus, bicycle or on foot. Myriad of roads lead you to the sunny South of Switzerland: Ticino. Your journey begins only a stone’s throw away from you home. By train. Travelling by train in Switzerland is comfortable and very reliable; thanks to the world’s best rail system. Numerous international trains arrive in Ticino every hour from the gateways Basel und Zurich, stopping in Bellinzona, Lugano, Mendrisio and Locarno. The TILO-train offers connections within the main cities in Ticino every 20 minutes. By car. Ticino is easily accessible by car. The shortest way from the North to the South of the Alps is through the Gotthard road tunnel or the alpine pass. A modern and efficient motorway runs through all Ticino (A2). The Gotthard tunnel (17 kilometers) allows travellers to avoid climbing the majestic alpine passes. It is for 125 years that this tunnel has been linking the North with the South. By plane.

We are grateful to the Society and the author for enabling it to be republished in our Newsletter; and to Swiss Post for allowing the use of the illustrations of its products. The modern Gotthard Road Tunnel under the legendery Gotthard Pass was opened in 1980. The new Gotthard Base Tunnel (rail) running deep below it will officially open to trains in the first weekend in June this year (full timetable starts December 2016). It is 57 kilometres in length; 28 million tonnes of rock were excavated during its construction and 325 trains are due to pass through it. The opening of the Base Tunnel was celebrated by Swiss Post on the 12th May 2016 with the issue of a set of two stamps, each complete with a minute amount of finely powdered stone from the tunnel workings affixed to it! They were complemented by two commemorative postal stationery cards with imprinted stamps of matching designs (Figs. 1 and 2 above). The illustrations show a 'Cargo' locomotive exiting the northern end of the tunnel at Erstfeld and a 'Re 460' exiting at Bodio to the south.

  • Media Release Lukmanier Gallery: Agreement Between KVR And
Media Release 27 October 2020 Lukmanier Gallery: Agreement between KVR and Canton Graubünden The existing gallery on the Lukmanier Pass road along the Santa Maria reservoir of Kraftwerke Vorderrhein AG (KVR) is to be extended by 320 meters. This will permanently protect the section of road from avalanches. KVR has agreed with the canton of Graubünden on a split of costs. During the construction of the Santa Maria dam at the end of the 1950s, the Lukmanier Pass road in the area of the reservoir was relocated from the bottom of the valley to the side of the valley. The concession obligated the KVR to build full replacement structures. A winter-proof pass road is important for both the KVR and the canton. KVR wants to reach its dams in this area also in winter. The canton is interested in an open connection between the Surselva and the canton of Ticino, if possible all year round. The agreement reached at that time was specified in various ways in the following years. Nevertheless, it was not clear until now what proportion of the costs of winter-proof extensions and new constructions the KVR has to bear according to the concession. The partners have now clarified this question by mutual consent and settled it conclusively in a new agreement. The extension and new construction of the "Scopi 3" avalanche gallery will cost around CHF 8 million. The canton of Graubünden will bear 35 percent of the cost and KVR 65 percent. The KVR thus fulfils all the conditions and is released from its concession obligations with regard to the Lukmanier Pass road until the regular end of the concession in 2048.

  • Strain Rates at High Temporal Resolution from Curved Inclusion Trails in Garnet, Passo Del Sole, Central Swiss Alps
    J. metamorphic Geol., 2012 doi:10.1111/jmg.12017 Strain rates at high temporal resolution from curved inclusion trails in garnet, Passo del Sole, Central Swiss Alps C. A. BERG,* W. D. CARLSON AND J. N. CONNELLY† 1Department of Geological Sciences, The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX 78712, USA ([email protected]) ABSTRACT Quantitative strain rates at outcrop scale are very difficult to obtain, but they may be estimated from crystals with curved inclusion trails by calculating rotation rates from growth rates and corresponding deflections of the internal foliation. Garnet in a quartzose pelite at Passo del Sole in the central Swiss Alps is extraordinarily valuable for calculation of strain rates during Alpine orogenesis, because the unusual zoning patterns clearly define the kinetics of its nucleation and growth. Complex concentric zoning patterns can be correlated from one crystal to another in a hand sample, based on compositional and microstructural similarities; the ubiquity of these features demonstrates that all garnet crystals nucleated at nearly the same time. Compositional bands whose radial widths are proportional to crystal size provide evidence for growth governed by the kinetics of intergranular diffusion of locally sourced nutrients. Together, these constraints increase the reliability of estimates of rates of garnet growth, and the strain-rate calculations that depend on them. To obtain growth rates, P–T conditions during garnet crystallization were modelled in a series of pseudosections, and compositional evolution was connected to rates of garnet growth by means of an independently determined heating rate. These growth rates, combined with measured amounts of curvature of inclusion trails, indicate that the time-averaged strain rate at Passo del Sole during Alpine metamorphism was on the order of 10)14 s)1.

  • Evolution of Compositional Polarity and Zoning in Tourmaline During Prograde Metamorphism of Sedimentary Rocks in the Swiss Central Alps
---- American Mineralogist, Volume 81, pages 1222-1236, 1996 Evolution of compositional polarity and zoning in tourmaline during prograde metamorphism of sedimentary rocks in the Swiss Central Alps RUED! SPERLICH,! RETO GIERt,!,2,. ANDMARTIN FREY! 'Mineralogisch-Petrographisches Institut der Universitiit, Bernoullistrasse 30, CH-4056 Basel, Switzerland 2Geophysical Laboratory, Carnegie Institution of Washington, 5251 Broad Branch Road NW, Washington, DC 20015, U.S.A. ABSTRACT The compositional evolution of tourmaline from diagenetic to lower amphibolite-facies conditions was investigated in two metasedimentary units (redbed and black shale for- mations) along a traverse across the Central Alps. With increasing metamorphism, three distinct rim zones grew around detrital tourmaline cores, simultaneously with the devel- opment of prismatic neoblasts. Detrital cores and all successive rim zones are preserved in the amphibolite-facies rocks. As indicated by whole-rock data, the B required for tour- maline growth was released from illite and muscovite and was not introduced from ex- ternal sources. The studied samples of tourmaline exhibit compositional polarity, i.e., their composi- tions are different at the opposite ends of the c axis. The compositional difference between the two poles can be expressed by the substitutions Na + Mg ;= 0 + Al and 2Al ;= Ti + Mg, with the positive pole always richer in Al and having more X-site vacancies. Both chemical and optical polar effects are most pronounced in the internal rim zones and become less prominent toward the external zones. The systematic prograde compositional trends are depicted in a vector space for Li-poor tourmaline. At low-grade conditions, the tourmaline composition is clearly controlled by the host-rock composition, but with in- creasing metamorphic grade the compositions of tourmaline from a variety of rocks con- verge.
