With all the other title pretenders dropping out of contention after Saturday's Race 1, Sunday in Macau was a glorious day for Hyundai as the i30 N cars claimed the first two spots in the standings for both drivers and teams. Other drivers were able to taste their slice of Macanese cake during the weekend. Jean-Karl Vernay took an authoritative victory in the first race at the wheel of the Leopard Lukoil Team Audi RS3 LMS; it was the fourth win for the 2017 TCR International Series champion in the season and only Tarquini won more races (five). Another Audi driver, Frédéric Vervisch on his first appearance at Macau, was victorious in Race 2; after finishing on the podium six times, the Belgian claimed his and Comtoyou Racing's well deserved maiden win in the FIA World Cup. Esteban Guerrieri won the final race in the Münnich Motorsport Honda Civic, a success that helped the Argentine driver and the German outfit to climb to third in the final standings for Drivers and Teams respectively. Possibly the most disappointed driver during the weekend was Rob Huff, who aimed to add a tenth victory to his already impressive tally of being the most victorious driver on the Guia . After a faultless performance in Qualifying that gave him pole positions for both Race 1 and Race 3, Huff was not as good a starter as he usually is and had to be contented with a third and a second. Timo Scheider and Norbert Michelisz also deserve to be mentioned. The former DTM champion started from pole position on the reverse grid for Race 2 and achieved his first WTCR podium as he was able to keep a determined Muller at bay to maintain second place. As for the Hungarian, he perfectly played the role of support driver to Tarquini in Race 1; while his Italian teammate was struggling with a technical issue, Michelisz installed himself behind him and protected his back from the rest of the field.

At the end of the first lap, Tarquini was in 9th position after starting 14th. Two trios headed the field: Guerrieri, Huff and Vernay were fighting for the lead; Michelisz, Muller and Ehrlacher were involved in the battle for fourth. The safety car was deployed on lap 4 after Aurélien Panis crashed at the Solitude Esses and when the race resumed, Björk overtook Tarquini for ninth. The 31-year-old from Lyon defended the colours of the Leopard in an Audi RS3 LMS prepared by Team WRT, with considerable success as he was fighting for the titles in both series. He was also competing in the TCR Benelux Trophy, which had an obvious importance for a team with Luxemburgish and Belgian roots. It was a busy race programme for ‘JK’ who eventually finished fifth in WTCR, was vice champion in TCR Europe and took the TCR Benelux title, harvesting seven race wins.

How do you regard your season that was capped by a beautiful victory at Macau? “I am satisfied; one cannot complain when you take wins and poles in every series you contest, but it could have been a little bit better. Even at Macau, it was nice to win Race 1; I used well the power of the Audi in the straight and could pass Yvan Muller, but I could have won Race 3 as well if I hadn’t been a victim of the pile-up at the Lisboa bend in Race 2. Because of the damage, the sump shield went loose during Race 3 and that compromised aerodynamic behaviour on the straight and stability when braking. It’s a pity because the third place in the WTCR standings was within reach. Third would have been better than fifth, but it’s not the end of the world…”

Kristoffersson won the championship with a 13-point margin from Dahlgren, thanks to an impressive second half of the season that saw three wins from the last four races. Dahlgren finished runner up, with teammate Daniel Haglöf in third position. Andreas Wernersson, driving for Lestrup Racing Team, was one of the big surprises of the season; he was in serious contention for the title and eventually finished fourth overall. Even though PWR Racing Team missed out on a second drivers’ title in a row, they still secured the Teams’ championship. “I told the team before the final race that, even if we failed to win the drivers’ title, this was still the best season we have ever had. Everything can happen during the final race weekend and that was certainly true this year, with hurricanes during qualifying and everything else that happened. Johan Kristoffersson is a very good driver and Kristoffersson Motorsport has been involved in Touring Cars for many years, so we had tough competitors. We will return even stronger for next year,” team owner Haglöf summarized. 29 WORLD AND LIFE TCR 2018 NEWS HOME DRIVERS TEAM

comeback. Was it because you Three questions to… could not stay without driving? “Not at all, I did not feel either the need or the desire to drive, and I Yvan Muller enjoyed the coaching role that I had in 2017, but the sponsor wanted me to After being the WTCC champion be part of this year’s project as a four times you were only 3 points driver too. So, I came back, I had fun away from adding a WTCR title to and was quite competitive...” your collection, but M Racing-YMR took the Teams’ title. What is your In 2019 you will be facing another assessment at the end of 2018? challenge: bringing to a debut in “It was very positive and the Teams’ WTCR the brand new Link&Co 03, title made me very happy; it means the first Chinese TCR car, in more than anything else to me. It was cooperation with Cyan Racing. How such a competitive season and such a do you see this new adventure? challenge for us. We entered the team “It’s a completely new project, with in the FIA WTCR only at the deadline the difficulties and the excitement of and it was a complete bet: we didn’t starting everything from a blank sheet have the budget, we were still recruiting personnel and hadn’t received the cars. At the collective test in Barcelona, we realized we were not ready and almost decided to skip the first round at Marrakech. It has been a total rush and this continued throughout the season, so to clinch the title was really a great satisfaction for everybody in the team. The Drivers’ title is always a little bit of a gamble and was only decided by a few points. It didn’t go in my direction, but it’s not a tragedy. C’est la vie.”

At the end of 2016 you announced your retirement from racing, but the 2018 season marked your of paper. It won’t be easy, but together with all the partners involved, we have been working intensively for a few months and hopefully in the right direction. We have now started track testing, having performed two sessions so far. The aim at the moment is to check that everything works and to gain reliability. In terms of performance, it is difficult to say anything until we directly compare ourselves with the other competitors. We haven’t yet decided the drivers for sure, I would like to see my nephew, Yann Ehrlacher, joining us, but we will see. What is likely is that I will be driving again. If my friend Gabriele [Tarquini] is still around and winning, why wouldn’t I?”
