Nevertheless, this warning is not designed to keep the humble and contrite from the table of the Lord, as if the supper were for those who might be free from sin. On the contrary, we who are invited to the supper, coming as guilty and polluted sinners and without hope of eternal life apart from the grace of God in Christ, confess our dependence for pardon and cleansing upon the perfect sacrifice of Christ, base our hope of eternal life upon His perfect obedience and righteousness, and humbly resolve to deny ourselves, crucify our old natures, and follow Christ as becomes those who bear His name. Let us therefore, in accordance with the admonition of the apostle Paul, examine our minds and hearts to determine whether such discernment is ours, to the end that we may partake to the glory of God and to our growth in the grace of Christ. Deacons’ Offering February 7, 2010 The Deacons and Deaconesses administer the Deacons’ Fund to meet needs of our church family. The Diaconate ministers in faithfulness and compassion, never revealing names, always alert and sensitive to emergencies and poverty. The care of the poor, the aged, and other suffering saints of God is a primary duty of all worthy stewardship. Providing for needy brethren is to love Christ Himself (Matthew 25:34–40). Give generously that we might share with those in our church family in times of need.

Wherever we look, wherever we go, sex is all around us. And even if we could somehow get away from the billboards, the media, the culture, we would still struggle— because, just like other sins, sex is ultimately a struggle of the heart. Christians can be scared to talk about sex—maybe it makes us uncomfortable; maybe we don’t want to be honest about the temptations we face; or maybe we are afraid of what others will say if they knew what sexual sins we have committed. Each of us probably knows someone who has committed or been directly affected by sexual sin, and we’re probably not sure how to talk to them about it. Sexual sin impacts each of our lives in some way or another. Praise God that this isn’t the end of the story! Because of Christ we have the gift of forgiveness; through the Holy Spirit, we have the hope of living a renewed and transformed life. We can often feel overwhelmed when we think about the sinfulness of our own hearts, but God’s grace is sufficient for the temptations we face. This year’s Urban Ministry Conference will address this issue of “Sex in the City,” as Joshua Harris and John Freeman explore God’s calling to live a life of sexual purity and offer hope in and through the gospel of Jesus Christ. The workshops (led by the staff of HarvestUSA) will offer practical advice on how to confront specific areas of sexual temptation and struggle. Workshop topics include sexual abuse, same-sex attraction, singleness, and the role of the church in dealing with sexual sin. More detailed descriptions of each workshop are available at umc.tenth.org. Adults aren’t the only ones who face these temptations. In fact, teenagers have increasingly become a prime target for sexual pressure. With this in mind, we have invited local Christian high schools to participate during the day on Friday in a pre-conference geared specifically to teenagers. Dave White and Ellen Dykas from HarvestUSA will speak to the high schoolers, and then with several other staff will facilitate gender-specific breakout groups to allow for more open and honest conversation. Doug Logan will also be leading a teen track during the main conference itself. Our goal is to equip young people with truth in their fight for purity and devotion to Christ. If you haven’t done so already, please set aside the weekend of March 5–7 so you can attend the Urban Ministry Conference. Please be praying for the preparations for the pre-conference and conference; pray that many people would come and that they would be encouraged by the hope offered in the gospel for each area of life, but particularly in the area of sexual sin. Sexual sin often makes us feel embarrassed and sometimes hopeless, yet power over this struggle can be found in Christ.
