The main Spanish archives for the history of Louisiana in this guide are the archives maintained by Spain’s Ministry of Culture (Archivo General de Indias, Archivo General de Simancas, Archivo Histórico Nacional, Sección Nobleza del Archivo Histórico Nacional), the archive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other archives maintained by the Ministry of Defense or military archives (Archivo General de la Marina Álvaro de Bazán, Archivo Museo Naval, Archivo General Militar de Madrid, Archivo Cartográfico y de estudios Geográficos del Centro Geográfico del Ejército and Archivo Militar General de Segovia). An entry has been created for each of these archives with practical information, the history of the institution, and a description of its holdings and documents relating to Louisiana. It also indicates the available reference or description tools, electronic resources and online access to their content and documents. There is also a special explanation of how to access PARES (www.pares.mcu.es), the online portal created for the state archives of the Ministry of Culture, which incidentally have the largest holdings of documentation for the study of Louisiana. Finally, there is a list of the documents and holdings in each archive, found by online search, databases and the other digital resources now available. We also indicate whether the documents and holdings found for Louisiana are currently digitized, and if so, whether they can be consulted online. The guide also includes a list and description of the main Spanish libraries with holdings on Louisiana, such as the Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid, the Real Academia de la Historia, the Real Biblioteca del Palacio Real, and the Biblioteca Antonio de Ulloa. A description is provided of each one, including practical information, as well as a list of works relating to Louisiana in these repositories. It should be pointed out that only works pre-dating 1900 have been included, except for catalogues and reference tools. Information is included on online access to the descriptive catalogue files now available in all these libraries. Also, we indicate where libraries have digital platforms for consulting their digitized works directly, as in the Biblioteca Digital Hispánica, the Biblioteca Virtual de Defensa and the Biblioteca Virtual Miguel de Cervantes. Finally we include other online resources, such as the digital networks of educational or cultural institutions where a single search can cover all the centers or institutions in that network. Thus, this guide lists the manuscripts, books and maps on Louisiana found in the Red de Bibliotecas Universitarias Españolas (REBIUN) and the Red de Bibliotecas del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), which have enabled us to find holdings relating to Louisiana in: Bibliotecas de la AECID (Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo), Bibliotecas de la Universidad Pontificia Comillas de Madrid, de la Universitat de Valencia, Universidad de Oviedo, Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, Universitat de Barcelona, Universitat Ramon Llull, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Universidad de Sevilla, Universidad de Navarra, Biblioteca de Catalunya, Biblioteca Tomás Navarro Tomás, Archivo y Biblioteca del Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid and Escuela de Estudios Hispanoamericanos del CSIC. Please note that the descriptions and information on each of the Archives and Libraries in this guide are taken from their own websites and description tools. It is also important to note that this guide is an overview of the main archives, libraries and holdings found to date relating to Louisiana, through the online tools and other digital resources offered by each of these institutions. This is an up-to-date but partial approximation of the holdings relating to Louisiana which exist in Spain. Up-to-date, because we have gathered the information and results currently offered by the archives and libraries we include, but these will change as the description and digitization process continues in each one. Partial, because the results we present in this guide for each of the centers consulted reflect searches for the term “Luisiana” and some of its variants, and so searches for other terms, for example, geographical terms, other names, materials, or general works on the USA, etc., would undoubtedly produce new results. In short, we hope this guide will be a useful and up-to-date tool for finding historic documentary holdings relating to Louisiana in the main Spanish Archives and Libraries, for use in future research. OTHER SECTIONS LIST OF DOCUMENTS RELATING TO LOUISIANA IN THE ARCHIVO GENERAL DE INDIAS (Appendices 1 to 7) ARCHIVO GENERAL DE INDIAS (AGI) HISTORY The Archivo General de Indias was created in 1785 at the express wish of King Charles III, in order to collect in a single place the documents on the Indies which were then scattered in other locations in Spain, such as Simancas, Cadiz and Seville. Until then, the documents relating to the management of the overseas territories (Ultramar) had been divided between the Archivo General de Simancas, founded in the 16th century, and the separate archives of the Consejo de Indias and the Casa de la Contratación. While initially the members of the Consejo Real studied and issued rulings on the affairs of the Indies, over time, the volume of these matters increased so much that it became necessary to create specific institutions to take charge of the government and administration of these new territories of the Crown. This was the origin of the Supremo y Real Consejo de las Indias and the Casa de la Contratación, which became the main governing bodies of the American colonies. The project to create this Archive was driven by the Secretary of the Indies, José de Gálvez, and carried out by the academic and historian Juan Bautista Muñoz, cosmographer-major of the Indies. The splendid building, Seville’s Casa Lonja, built in the reign of Philip II according to plans by Juan de Herrera, was chosen for its characteristics and size to hold this enormous collection of documents, as it continues to do today. In October 1785 the first documents from Simancas arrived at the Casa Lonja. From then on, the holdings of the main institutions of the Indies would be added in batches, eventually making the archive the main depository of documents for the study of Spanish government in the Americas. Most of the documents now held in the archive, on over seven linear kilometers of bookshelves and in 43,175 bundles (legajos), are from the bodies in Spain itself responsible for colonial administration. Only a few documents
