ElinaAaltonen, Holland. "The LansdowneTapes" cD is brilliant, I'm very pleased with it. The insert is very informativeand the picturesare great. TonyMason, .

KevinJulie, Canada. "What's the guitar. Within My Hearl" -unbelievablethat this song showshis talent on "Here never made it onto an album, David is at his best. I also like Am l" which is very "Celebrate". Hensley,"Magic Lantern" and The quality of this releaseis excellentand soundsgood in mYcar everyday. LouisRentroP, Holland. I got the CD today and eventhough I haven'tlistened to it so manytimes it soundsgreat. It's something l've been waiting for since I already have all Heep's records. What happenedto Mick'sfingers when Spice becameUriah Heep? The guitar solos soundso much better. I'm surprisedhow good the songs are from this period even if I don't like "Magic some of the jazz parts, for examplein Lantern'.Now that I haveThe Lansdowne Tapes and Rarities From The Bronze Age, I'm looking forward to more releaseslike these. Jari Nousiainen,Finland. I've been waiting for The LansdowneTapes a long time but it was worth the wait. lt's magicto hear David'swonderful voice again on songsthat l've neverheard before. BarbaraUllrich, Germany. To receiveThe LansdowneTapes after so much anticipationonly servedto add urgency to my critical considerationof it. The sleeve notes and photos are outstanding,a real tribuie to Rob Corich and everyoneinvolved. This CD (no matterwhat the self-absorbed pressmay say) is an invaluableaddition to the now rich archiveof early Heepmaterial. lt also chroniclesthe musicaleinergence of a seminalheavy rock band admirably.I hope that the momentumfor producingunreleased material of this kind will continue.

"Here sound and in the clear expressivevocals. lt also boastsa better outro. Am l" - a beautiful, typically Hensleyesqueballad come Heep rocker! There is a high lyrical "here standardbut The Gods like chorus, am I give love" may have countedagainst "Magic the trackfor use by Heep. Lantern"- with its Very EavyVery Umblestyle intro and of Wake Up at the start of the jazz sequence,I want to like this song. Howeverthe hints "Why" franticdrumming renders it a bit to loose. - a more atmosphericrendering that the powerfuland expressiveByron vocal, though with a harderedge. B side version.Another "Astranaza" Excellentinstrumentation, especially guitar wah wahs and solo break' - begins in a Zeppelinesqueway. Though the drumming is again too busy. lt's quite "What's eJfectivereally but whatthe heckis Astranaza? WithinMy Heart" - a lovelyballad shows Ken's vocalsto best effect. Makesme yearn for a Heep unplugedset. My which "What only problemwith this is its protractedending. ShouldBe Done" - a morereflective version than the album. Great vocals and piano intro but other almost melancholy "Lucy especiallythe drummingcould be tighter. Blues" - so closeto the instrumentation, "l albumversion to be as excellenthere as there. want You Babe" - rathertoo jumpy. The excellent vocals seerR to leave the instrumentationlar behind especiallythe busy "Celebrate" drummingagain. - an untidypiece with nice interludes. For exampleByron's an initialreaction and I could end up lovingthe songsI find quirkyat the momentgiven a monthor two. DavidBartle, England. What an insightinto Heep'spast. lt goes a longway to makingmy collectioncomplete' lt's a little rougfrround the edges, but the seeds of greatnessare sproutingout all over the Dlace. LannisEthridge, USA. "Hear "Born My favoritetrack is Am l" followedby ln A Trunk" but over all the whole CD isiantastic. The powerof David'svoice, Ken'sharmonies and Mick'sguitar is great. Mick was reallywell aheadof his time, don't you agree? MarkOwens, England to be a fine and nostalgicmomento of what Spice/Heepwere | {indThe LansdowneTapes 'tinny' in their early years. I also feel that the recordingsalthough a bit capture all about "Simon the early 70's feel and do the band justice. My favouritelracks are The Bullet "what's Freak", ,,Magic Lantern" and within My Heart". Although the tracks were archivedfor so long, they are part of Heep'shistory and I believeit is only right that they be releasedto let everyonehear the originalsound. The CD is well packagedand is a very goodcollectors item indeed. lan Maclaren, Scotland. The LansdowneTapes is great! I especiallylike the Spicetracks. I really like their style I see the influencethat Ken Hensleyhad on the band. The compilerstates in the and can "Schoolgirl" notesthat exc€ptfor the lead break, the track didn't translatewell to tape, I disagree!lt's a brilliantsong and I can see how it would have been a scorcherlive but it alsoworks well in the studio.lt's one of my favouritetracks from the CD' Joe Doran,USA. 'man, When I first heardabout The LansdowneTapes I thought they'rereally scraping the bottomof the barrelwith this one'. But the releasedoes haveseveral redeeming features, most notably the excellent singing of David Byron, he definitely validatesthe Spice materialwhich is otherwisehindered by mediocremusicianship and songwriting.Overall the CD is pretty good but I think I'd ratherseen a re issue of Byron'sRough Diamond or BabyFace Killer. GaryBrines, USA. 'Every "music David Byrononce sang in a latier project, Inch Of The Way', don'tfit with "Born the change of the times", In A trunk" was good for 1969 but is lost in 1993. "Here Howeverit's my privilegeto hear it. Am l" is a wonderfulsong, musicthat dreams "Magic are made of, what'sthis? it's heavyto...nice7solos. Lantern"is neithervery eavy "Astranaza" nor very umble but very raw and very jazzy. wouldn'tfit into 93 any better "What's than "Born ln A Trunk". Within My Heartis a beauti{ullove songthal would have "l 'Wake of the . Want You Babe" is similarto Up' but I preferthe titted on any "Celebrate" latter. shouldhave left alonethe Three Dog Night song but I bet "Schoolgirl" is ten times better than the original. at this point I decided I much this "Born preferred versionol In A Trunk" is the best Spicetrack on Heep. The instrumental "What the album, I really like this one, good eadbangingstuff. I would have likedto see AboutThe MusicOn this CD but overallI love the songsalter the changeto Uriah Heep. I'm not sure aboutthe Spicestuff, I guessI've alwaysbeen an eadbanger!! Bill Smith,Scotland. get Tapes becauseup to now I have nothingof Spice. I'm very happyto The Lansdowne "Magic Spicewere a very good group and Byronhad a wonderfulvoice. I very much like "Astranaza" "Born Lantern", and In A trunk" from the Spicetracks. From the otherpart of "Here "why" the cD I like Am 1", for me it's a wonderfulsong and the long versionoi giveseach memberof the groupspace to play' CarloMantelli, ltalY. 'Rarities' The CD is an excellentcompanion piece to the disc. The first thing I noticedwas the enthusiasmand DavidByron's strong vocals. The Materialis reallystrong to me and I "Astranaza". particularlyenjoyed "Magic Lantern"and John McCraneY,USA. What an excellentalbum. Spice were obviouslymore into iazz al that time as it also came 'wake very Eavy Very Umble with Up (set Your Sights)'.I really love the song out on "Born "What's Within My Heart" with its lovely acoustics. In A trunk" is a good one to, very ditferentbut still jazz comesthrough. I don't think this track soundslike early ,it's betterl! ColleenBolstad, New Zealand. To me this is the hardestthing to write since the UHAS survey last year, ('10tavorite songs, 5 favorile albums), now really, it can't be put into words other than incredibly awsome. No, that aint it, soundstoo corny.Just listento the albumand hear how good it soundsjust like everythingelse uriah Heephave ever done,I'm lostfor words. :9! 9 PAULNEWTON An exclusiveinterview - Part 1. Paulwas the originalbass guitarist in UriahHeep and in this exclusiveinterview, his first majorinterview since his Heepdays, he recallsthe excitingtimes of the early 70's and his careerbefore and afler UriahHeep. Alan: Who was the first bandthat you recordedwith? Paul: Thefirst band I recordedwith was "The Gods",we did aboutfou!'tracks I believein 1967when we were workingfor the HarveyBlock agency and they bookedus somestudio time. The line up was me, ,Lee Kerslakeand Joe Konas.I remembertwo of "Towards the tracks in particular, the first was The Skies" which later came out on "The Gods" "Genesis"album and the otherwas "StickingWings On Flies"because this was back in the flower powerdays when thingswere a bit weird. I can't rememberthe titles of the othertwo, I did havethem on acetatebut I think Ken endedup with them. Previousto that I'd doneodd demoswhich were on a localband basis when I was youngerso the stuff with "The Gods" was my first professionalrecording. Alan: Did you get involvedwith "The Gods" throughyour father when he was managing the band? Paul: Yes, what happenedwas I was workingwith a band called"Shinn" with Brian Davidson,Tom Shinnand EddieLamb, it was a funnyline up, it was Hammondorgan, bass, drums and vocals. lt was a jazzy type of band which was basicallya forerunner "The "ELP" Nice", type of stuff but it was a bit too far ahead of it's time. lt was a musiciansband, other musicians used to comeand dig it becauseit wasn'tdancing type music.Logistically it was a majoraffair for us whenwe wantedto rehearsebecause two of the guyslived in ,I livedin Andoverand the otherguy livedin Southamptonbut we did a lot of work for about 6 months and my father managedthe band becausehe'd managedall the bandsl'd been in. We did a gig up in Londonand a guy calledKen Harveywho ran the ballroomwhere we playedwas alsothe bookingagent or the manager of "The Gods" and they had just split up. had left to go with I think, the other two guys weren't doing anythingand Ken Hensleywas left lookingfor somethingto do. Abouta monthlater "Shinn"spilt up and my fathermade contact with Ken Hensleyand he and I re-formed"The Gods". I knew Lee Kerslakethrough other bandsl'd playedin, whenwe werein the Bournmoutharea and Leewas in the audience, he would come up and jam for a coupleof numbersso I knew he was a good drummer. Lee alsoknew a guitaristcalled Mick something or other,he was our first guitaristbut he was a bit of a strangeguy so we got rid of him. Thenwe got that guy Georgie,he fittedthe image better, he had the long hair becauseagain, it was the flower powerdays, so he fitted the image but his playingwasn't up to scratch. We did a gig which was down in Bournmouthand the band supportingus was from Slough and Joe Konaswas playing guitar. We were impressedby him so we had a word after the show then went up to see "The "The him duringthe weekand he splitfrom them andjoined Gods".I left Gods"at the end of 1967but lused to bumpinto Ken from time to time, lrememberseeing him "Cilff once at a universitygig when he was playingwith Bennet".By then I'd ioined 10 "spice" and when we staried recordingwith Gerry Bron we were using a session keyboardplayer and eventuallyI said that Ken was probablythe best guy to join the band andthat's how it all came about. "Spice" Alan: Youjoined whilstthey were in the studiorecording their singlefor United Artists? "what Paul: Yes, they'd done About The Music" and I playedon the B side, I think they had a temporarybass playerwho playedon the A side. After that was releasedwe did quite a bit of recordingfor UnitedArtist over the ne)ftfew monthswhich was virtuallvall the stutf we did on stage.None ol it was actuallyreleased for what ever reason. "Spice" Afan: Didn't recordsome tracks under the nameof ,,Theplay',? Paul: That name rings a bell in my memory, maybe the intentionwas to releaseit under that name. Possiblythe recordcompany said that spice wasn't "what a very good nameor after the failure of About The Music" they thoughtthat a changeoiname would be a goodidea but whateverthe reasonthe stuff neveractually got put onto record. "The Alan: What did you do between Gods" and ,,Spice"? Paul: That was a period of about 6 months.I workedfor.a band locallyin the Andover area. lt seemedlike a good idea at the time but it turned\ut not to be becauseall the guys were local musicians, they didn't want to be professionalor play too far away so I answereda few ad's in MelodyMaker, I went lor a few "spice". auditionsand ihat's how I got the job in Mick will probablyremember this, I also had a van load of equipmlnt "shinn" "The as my dad had bought all the amps etc for and Gods", so I had all this equipmentwhich for any bandthat was strugglingwas quite a catch.I supposethat went in my favour but we had a bit of a blow at the auditionand "spice" it worked.Eventually my lather got involvedbecause at that time were struggling, they had local worli in the Walthamstowarea but not much more. My dad ran a dancehall in Andoverhe wouldbook

We spent a lot of time in the studio as player-Gerry 1969/70and it becameevident through this time that we neededa keyboard had actuallybrought somebody in just on a sessionbasis and we had virtuallyrecorded "Spice" "Very Eavy,Very Umble" as when I had got hold of Ken Hensleyto come in on "Spice" keyboards.Gerry had thoughtthat wasn't such a good name to launchthe band with and had come up with Uriah Heep,we didn't object at all, at that stage the name wasn'timportant to us, one seemedjust as good as another. Alan: What was the impactof Ken cominginto the band? Paul: I rememberthe first rehearsalwe did with Ken,we playedGypsy and Gerrycame in the door and was absolutelygobsmacked because the sound was such a big modern sound for those days. He was over the moon, the sound was so much better with the Hammondorgan, we had re arrangedthings to accommodatethe Hammondbecause previously Mick and I were so much busier as musicians because you've got to compensatewhen there is only guitar, bass and drums. lt gave me more ol a chanceto lay back a bit as a bass player becausewhen I've workedwith keyboardsbefore I was well awarethat the stylewas so dilferentotherwise the wholething wouldjust becometoo "Spice" busy.Ken was the missinglink, he was what we had needed, the early stu{fstood up on it's own but as our writing startedto change,we neededthe keyboardsand Ken providedwhat we needed. Also his vocalshad a big impact,Ken couldreach a very high harmonypart whichbecame a trademarkof the bandand was quiteunusual tor then. "Spice" Alan: Alex Napierwas the drummerwhen Gerry Bron took you into the studios "Very and he playedon most of the Eavy" tracks. He was a bit of a characterto say the least, what are your memoriesof him? "Spice" Paul: Nigel Pegrumwho was the originaldrummer in was a very good drummer but as the band progressedand becamemore blueseyand heavy,he provedto be a bit too light for us. We auditioneda lot of drummersand Alex came for an auditionand we decidedthat he was what we wanted,he said he was a singleguy so we thoughtgreat, he'll be able to devoteall his time to the band. Alex lived in a dilferentpart of London1o the rest of us so we usedto go roundand pick him up in the van for rehearsalsand gigs, we soon realisedthat where he was livingthere was a woman and 3 or 4 kids there too, when we asked him about it he said it was his sister and as he had come down from Scotlandto be in the band he was stayingwith her until he found a place of his own. Of course, over the periodof the nextlew monthsit becameblatantly obvious thal it was his wife and largefamily that seemedto increasein stepsfrom the age of 3 monlhsto about4 years. For weeks he kept up the story that it was his sister and her family but eventually he admittedthat he didn't like to say becauseif he'd told us in the lirst place\ite may not havetaken him on, whichpossibly would have been the case,at that stageof the bandwe were doing all we couldto get gigs and financiallyhe must havefound it hard to keep his large lamily on what we were earning. No doubt he was getting a bit otf the DHSSto supplementhis incomeand therewere variousallegations that he was into other areasof makingmoney as thingswould go missing{rom placeswe had played. Alan: Wasn'the also a bit of a hardman? Paul: He was a very hard man. He was a good man to have on your side, you wouldn't want to fall foul of him, he had scars all over his bodylrom his days in Glasgow. His best mate "Higgie" was the roadie at the time, he was a pretty hard case and he was absolutelyterrified of Alex. So we were alwaysa little bit wary about him, if at rehearsals 14

L you wereto say that the drummingwasn't quite right, you had to be carefulhow far you took it becauseyou couldonly go so far then he'd wantto take you outsideto settleit. Basicallyhe was a very soundguy but it was a littlebit dangeroushaving someone like that in the band, you've got to be honestin a band, you've got to be able to commenton eachothers playing without it endingin a fight. So, for all thesereasons and the factthat Alex had been with the band for over a year and we had out grown him, we neededa betterdrummer. I thinkit was Davidwho knewNigel Olsson from some session work he'd "The done, Nigel had been workingwith SpencerDavies Band" I think and rhey had stoppedtouring so he was lookingfor somethingto do. Soon a{ter he got the offer from EltonJohn and it was an offer that from a financialpoint of view, iie couldn'tafford to turn down.Nobody questioned it becausealthough we were all committedto the bandby then, if someone like EltonJohn had madeany of us an olfer'likethat we'd havetaken it, we weren'tthat stupid not to realisethat EltonJohn was goingto be verybig. Alan: Havingsaid all that aboutAlex, who hadthe misfortuneof tellinghim he wasfired? Paul: lt's that manyyears ago that I can't quite remember,if it was me I'm sure I'd have rememberedit. Whenwe madethe decisionto lire him I thinkwe thenhad to decidewho wouldtell him becausewe were worriedthat when we told him somebodymight get hurt, you don'tknow how anybodywill reactwhen they get fired, especiallysomeone like Alex. I think that in the end we just sent him up to the ofJiceand let him find out from the management,it seemedsafer for us. We'd wantedto get rid of him for a while but we'd put it oJfbut as it turnedout I think he took it well and I think he actuallywanted to spend more time with his familyas we were spendingmore and moretime awayon the road. lnterviewand photoby Alan Hartley. I even askedthe fan club run by Bronzerecords to publishsome in 1976 but they never did. I thought I knev{everything about Heep's older days but in the UHAS magazineI find so much interestinginformation about the past as well as the latestnews. Nowsomething that I'm goingto write to Red Steel about,it's the material "". Heep recorded justbefore I was luckyenough to be au-pairingin Londonin the summerof 1981and to havethe chanceto followthe rehearsalswhen Mickand Leewere lorming the Abominogline up. I can assureyou that the stuft they were playingfiust like said in his interview in issue 5) was even better than the material released on "Abominog". "Abominog", When I first heard brilliantas it was, I was disappointed becauseI missed my favourite tunes from the rehearsals. Especiallyone that has remainedin my memories,it was a song that started quietly with the bass drum, then followedan alternatingsoft riff and littie guitarsolos belore the lyrics:-"l've beenthinking aboutyou, I've beenthinking it over". ! was sure it would be their next hit and I was to shy to askfor a copy of the rehearsaltapes which I now regret.Anyway, I'm very thankfulthat theband let me followtheir rehearsalsso closely,it gave me a real insighto{ the way they workand made me respectthem even more than I did before. They were so innovative andprofessional, almost every day they had new songswritten and they developedthem soquickly with everyonebringing ideas into the songs,it was quite amazing. Nowthat I've startedthis longletter I'd liketo addBomething to the discussionabout .I don'l understandwhat so manyfans haveagainst him, no one complains "Conquest" about otherex Heep members. is not my favouriteHeep albumbut I don't see any problemwith John'svoice. lt may havebeen weaker than 'sbut it is beautiful andexpressive. Besides, I found he had a betterstage presenceeven though he was no DavidByron. Further more, I got the impressionthat he was a nice characterand he litted in well with the rest ol the band, which as lsabellaSeefriedt "it's mentionsin the last issue. somethingthat's importantin this businessif you are to survive".So I don't see whv he'sso hatedamongst Heep fans.

Dear UHAS, Just to carry on the Slomandebate, l'm a supporterol his, "Conquestwas excellentand althougharguably not one ol Heep'sbest, it has some greai tracks.John has a goodvoice which perhapsis just not to the band'sbest liking but tell me of any real "Conquest" Heepfan that wouldnot value in their collection.Steven Lewis, England. Dear UHAS, John Slomanwas the best singerUriah Heep has ever had and "Conquest" is one of their best albums.Sloman had incrediblecontrol, he soundsalmost like a black soul singer. His style greatly expandedHeep's musical parametersand it contrasted nicelywith the more operaticstyles ol John Lawtonand the Byronicman. Gary Brines, USA. UHAS rep/y:- From "Conquest" bethg the best Heep album to 'Htgh And l4ight]/'i read on...... "High Dear UHAS, When Heep recorded And Mighty" little did they know thal it would not only be their last with John Wettonbut also DavidByron. With all the songswritten by Ken Hensley (two co written with Wetton) it seems he was determinedto show how versitileHeep could be mixingballads and rockers.lt showedthe beginningof the bands discontentwith their musicaldirection which would becomernore obviouswith the John Lawtonalbums. Nevertheless it featuredseveral strong songs and provedthat Byronwas one of the finest rock vocalistsof all time. The albumwas a fitting close to an important chapterof the Heepstory, the end of an era in a storythat is still beingwritten. lt holdsup well after manylistens and is one of my favouriteHeep albums.
