While most earlier efforts were aimed at secondary levels, research has consistently shown that attitudes are formed at an early age. Accordingly, in the fall of 1974 cur- riculum resource staff began developing a multicultural program for the primary ` grades. This program had a social studies babe, but incorporated correlated activities from language arts, music, and art. The initial levels of the program were implemented in schools in 1975-76. Since that time work has continued on the program, correlating it with the implementation of new 1978-73 social studies text materials.These develop- mental efforts were undertaken by durriculum writers chosen from the ranks of the district's resource staff and-teachers, assisted by committees of district teachers, administrators, and corebunity representatives. The result of these efforts is a program entitled US: A Cultural Mosaic, composed of six levels for elementary grades. Level 1 begins with a study of the family, and successive levels study group, community, state, nation, and a region of the world. Each level is designed to help students develop an ap- preciation of the similarities and differences of individuals and groups which compose American society. c/1 Elisa L. This may be viewed as a mosaic in whichg'ach. piece is distinct and adds to t'he beauty of the whole. Earlier approaches to multicultural education tended to stressheroes and holi- days. In the US: A Cultural Mosaic program heroes and holidays aretaught, but as part of a larger examination of the similarities anddifferences shared by people from many backgrounds. The similarities and differences ofcultural values are studied in the settings of family, group, community, state,nation, and region of the world. At each level of the expanding circle,history and geography are used as vehicles to explore these culturalsimilarities and differences. SOME THOUGHTS BEFORE BEGINNING Teachers have long had intimate familiarity with the conceptof balance. We have had learning conveniently divided into domainsfor us, and we know that the cognitive,- affective, and psychomotor domains areall-important and that we.should no emphasize one at the expense of the others.We'know that the development of children's minds is important, but we must notneglect the development of their bodies or their appreciation for the aestheticside of life. For many years individual and cultural differences were brushed aside with theoversimplification that "we are all really alike." This was often referred to as a whitewash attempt to mold all Americans into the image of Euro-Americans. In recent years the pen- dulum has swung, and multicultural education oftentakes the form of festivals in which members of a 'cultural group. are portrayed either asall dressing in a given way or all eating the samefood or all performing the same ceremony. Portraying all members of a group as acting in a given way cangenerally tle considered stereotyping. For example, all Mexican Americans.do not eat tacos at every meal. All Asian Americans do not use chopsticks to eatchow mein at each meal. All American Indians do rot dance around a firewhile wearing feathered headgear every time they get together. All Black Americans do

The term traditional costume is often used to designate a very precise idea of a type of clothing. But a specific use of the term is problematic, because the clothing referred to as costume was not only worn in the Bavarian Oberland on certain occasions, but in some cases a traditional dress code was also used in everyday life. Until the middle of the 18th century, the term "Tracht" was understood to mean the totality of what a person wore outwardly, not only clothing, but also hairstyles and even the general appearance of a person.

    Broadway Costumes Costume Rentals How-To’s, Contract Terms & Conditions Rental Rates & Deposits: The basic rental period is 2 nights. We do not charge for any days that Broadway Costumes is closed. Additional days rent at the rate of 20% per day plus tax. Special weekly rates and “play” rates may apply. Just inquire as to your special needs. Deposits are required and are usually twice the amount required as the stated rental rate up to and including the current retail value. Minimum deposit is $20. Deposits are not refundable for any cancellations unless 1 (one) week or more in advance, then 50% refunded. The deposit is NOT part of the rental balance. The entire rental balance is due when the costume is picked up. Deposits may be made by credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express) or by cash. Deposits are refunded after costume return and any applicable fees are paid. Rental Return: You must return all rented items by the date stated on the contract. Items not returned on the specified date are subject to a late fee of 20% of the basic rental rate per day late plus tax. Alterations by Broadway Costumes: Alterations and cleaning are normally included in the rental price. However, alterations may take up to two weeks at peak seasons; faster service may require an additional service charge. Alterations by Customer: NO ALTERATIONS are allowed by the customer.     Chapter 5 – Date Luckily, most of the problems involving time have mostly been solved and packed away in software and hardware where we, and our customers overseas, do not have to deal with it. Thanks to standardization, if a vender in Peking wants to call a customer in Rome, he checks the Internet for the local time. As far as international business goes, it’s generally 24/7 anyway. Calendars on the other hand, are another matter. You may know what time it is in Khövsgöl, Mongolia, but are you sure what day it is, if it is a holiday, or even what year it is? The purpose of this chapter is to make you aware of just how many active calendars there are out there in current use and of the short comings of our Gregorian system as we try to apply it to the rest of the world. There just isn’t room to review them all so think of this as a kind of around the world in 80 days. There are so many different living calendars, and since the Internet is becoming our greatest library yet, a great many ancient ones that must be accounted for as well. We must consider them all in our collations. As I write this in 2010 by the Gregorian calendar, it is 2960 in Northwest Africa, 1727 in Ethopia, and 4710 by the Chinese calendar. A calendar is a symbol of identity. They fix important festivals and dates and help us share a common pacing in our lives. They are the most common framework a civilization or group of people can have.

    DRAGON TALES Chapter 1 Dragon Tales of Old China BOOM! boom! boom! The sound of the huge drums beaten with a loud and lively rhythm stirs the dragon to action. Shrill blasts from the trumpets add to his frenzy. His long body writhes; his mammoth jaws open and close. He snaps furiously at a huge ball held by one of the men. Angry that he has missed the red ball, the dragon lunges here and there. The crowd scatters, fearful of being struck by the monsters tail, as it lashes from side to side. The drums roll and crash like thunder. The shrieking trumpets make the great dragon seem like a formidable monster. Children and grownups regret to see him come to the end of his wild chase for the ball. Little does it matter to them that the dragon’s head and tail are made only of bamboo covered with colored paper. They forget that his long cloth body, stretching more than fifty feet down the narrow street, is supported by men carrying poles topped by circular frames. Once a year the dragon awakens in old China and roams the streets, going to homes and shops. He eats up the evil spirits, so the people say, and his presence brings good luck during the new year. Is it any wonder, then, that shopkeepers light long strings of firecrackers and offer gifts of food and money to the men who lead the dragon to their stores? This dragon play is one of the many forms of entertainment given in the streets of Chinese cities at the New Year.
