  • 2019–2020 Annual Report Page 03 Director’S Letter
KOREA INSTITUTE HARVARD UNIVERSITY 2019–2020 ANNUAL REPORT PAGE 03 DIRECTOR’S LETTER Looking back at Academic Year 2019–2020, I feel nostalgic about the days when we had regular in-person events and academic engagements. What a strange and unknown world we are suddenly living in. When the pandemic forced Harvard to empty its campus in March, we were shocked and confused. Within a few days, students left campus. Then, faculty pivoted to teaching remotely, and staff had to find ways to fulfill their duties from home. Our seniors and newly minted PhDs graduated without treasured and customary traditions, celebrations, and send-offs. Before the pandemic affected our operations, however, Korea Institute had another busy and productive year. One of the year’s highlights was the 2019 Harvard-Dartmouth Korean Art History Workshop, which took place in December 2019. One of the initiatives that I started as Director of the Korea Institute was to CONTENTS promote Korean art, and scholarship on Korean art, by collaborating with experts in the field and offering an intellectual space to build the field through scholarly conversations. This 2019 workshop was the fourth in the series, which Professor Sunglim Kim at Dartmouth University and I organized together. It focused on modern and contemporary Korean art featuring in-depth analysis of such artistic genres as ceramics, ink and oil paintings, and architectural art in both South and North Korea. Coincidentally in Fall 2019, the Korea Institute hosted a modest yet fascinating photo exhibit on campus featuring eighteen photos taken by the late photographer, Han Youngsoo, in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Climatic Disasters and Defense Countermeasures of the Oasis City on Tropic of Cancer Duan Peng LingZhao JiaFengWeng (Zhaoqing Meteorological Observatory, Guangdong, China 526060) Abstract:This paper analyzes the climatic characteristics and climatic disasters of the oasis city of zhaoqing on the tropic of Cancer .The result indicates that the frequent meteorological droughts, and the frequent Geological disasters caused by heavy rain, and the high temperature, which cause energy consumption and electricity consumption, and the smog, the severe thunderstorms and short-term strong winds which effect on urban transport. And the impact of dominant winds on industrial layout, and some defense countermeasures have been put forward:Ecological city planning should consider meteorological risk areas according to meteorological conditions; Climate demonstration must be conducted for major urban projects;Strengthen the relevant research of meteorological planning for eco-city construction and other countermeasures. These efforts will provide scientific data for the government departments to plan for the sustainable development of ecological cities. Key words: Oasis City; Climate characteristics; Climate disasters;Countermeasure 1.Introduction Zhaoqing City, Guangdong Province is located in the central and western part of Guangdong Province. It is located in the south of Nanling, with high mountains in the Northwest and low in the Southeast. The mountains, hilly basins, river valleys, and plains criss-cross each other. • Liolophura Species Discrimination with Geographical Distribution Patterns and Their Divergence and Expansion History on the Nort
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Liolophura species discrimination with geographical distribution patterns and their divergence and expansion history on the northwestern Pacifc coast Eun Hwa Choi1,2,5, Mi Yeong Yeo1,5, Gyeongmin Kim1,3,5, Bia Park1,2,5, Cho Rong Shin1, Su Youn Baek1,2 & Ui Wook Hwang1,2,3,4* The chiton Liolophura japonica (Lischke 1873) is distributed in intertidal areas of the northwestern Pacifc. Using COI and 16S rRNA, we found three genetic lineages, suggesting separation into three diferent species. Population genetic analyses, the two distinct COI barcoding gaps albeit one barcoding gap in the 16S rRNA, and phylogenetic relationships with a congeneric species supported this fnding. We described L. koreana, sp. nov. over ca. 33°24′ N (JJ), and L. sinensis, sp. nov. around ca. 27°02′–28°00′ N (ZJ). We confrmed that these can be morphologically distinguished by lateral and dorsal black spots on the tegmentum and the shape of spicules on the perinotum. We also discuss species divergence during the Plio-Pleistocene, demographic expansions following the last interglacial age in the Pleistocene, and augmentation of COI haplotype diversity during the Pleistocene. Our study sheds light on the potential for COI in examining marine invertebrate species discrimination and distribution in the northwestern Pacifc. Chitons (Polyplacophora, Neoloricata, and Chitonida) are marine mollusks of the class Polyplacophora that possess a dorsal shell, which is composed of eight separate calcium carbonate plates1. Nearly a thousand extant chiton species are distributed worldwide, and over 430 fossil species have been reported, stretching back ca. 300 million years, from the late Ordovician to the Early Periman age 1,2; some have been dated as early as 500 million years old3,4.
