Third year coach Paul Smaldone returns a very talented and experienced team. The Mavericks return seven starters and four players that were chosen to the 2010 All- Allegany Mountain Collegiate Conference Baseball Team: Jeff Cox (Buffalo, NY/City Honors), Nick Kanutsu (Williamsville, NY/ Williamsville East), Brandon Lumadue (Cheektowaga, NY/West Seneca East) and Matt Urbanski (Depew, NY/Lancaster). The team also returns five of their six top pitch- ers from last year. The outfield: Senior Brandon Lumadue will once again anchor the outfield, either play- ing left field or center. Lumadue is a career (.428) hitter and is also a two-time All-AMCC outfield selection and already holds the career records for: doubles (27), home runs (14), runs batted in (100) and total bases (222). Also playing in the outfield is senior John Boyack (Buffalo, NY/Canisius), junior Nick Weigel (East Amherst, NY/ Williamsville East) and freshman Anthony Nicolazzo (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw). John Boyack has shown good im- provement and has been penciled in as the starter in right field. Nick Weigel is recovering from an injury short- ened 2010 season, and is looking to bounce back to man center field. Anthony Nicolazzo should compete for some playing time and projects to make a strong contribution to Medaille Baseball over the next four years. Nick Kanutsu, Jeff Cox, Mike Volpe (Niagara Falls, Niagara Catholic), Jon Lombardo (Jamestown, NY/ Frewsburg) and Korey Hagen (Grand Island, NY/ Grand Island) may also see some time in the outfield. The infield: The team’s biggest strength coming into the new season is definitely their infield. The team is return- ing core players: Nick Kanutsu at third base, Eric Skibinski at shortstop and Matt Urbanski at second base. Jeff Cox will be making the transition from outfield to first base. Last year, Kanutsu hit (.500) in AMCC contests and also mashed (7) home runs. Despite being hurt most of the season, Matt Urbanski still managed to hit (.400) with a (.508) on-base percentage. Urbanski also lit up opposing batteries for (11) stolen bases. The sure-handed Skib- inski will be looking to build upon his offensive ascent as last year he reached career highs across the board offen- sively. Cox should make an easy transition to first base, as he has very good hands, quick feet and good baseball instincts. Cox, who at one point of the season was leading the country in batting, led the team with a (.480) aver- age last year. Also manning the infield this year is Jon Lombardo, Pat Leipold (Painted Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post West), Mike Volpe (Niagara Falls, NY/ Niagara Catholic), Joe Petronella (Buffalo, NY/Canisius), and newcomer Korey Hagen. Lombardo has proven to be a very valuable asset to the team during his career. He is a very smart player and works hard to do things the right way. Lombardo is a very solid middle infielder that can be counted on for leadership and infield depth. Leipold is returning after a very successful freshman year in which he batted (.333) in limited chances. Leipold will be a strong contributor at first base and as the designated hitter. Volpe, returns for his sophomore season after showing off his strong offensive and defensive capabilities as a freshman. MEDAILLEBASEBALL2011 2011PREVIEW Petronella is a very hard worker and brings more depth to the middle of the infield. Hagen has displayed versatil- ity and will provide invaluable depth in the infield in the addition to the outfield. Catchers: The catching position has been improved greatly with the addition of senior Brad Gibson (Cheektowaga, NY/St. Mary's) and freshman Ryan Jordan (Ronkonkoma, NY/Connetquot). Gibson joins the Mavs after two very successful seasons at nearby Erie Community College and a year at Mississippi Valley State. He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to he team and will be instrumental in helping the development of the team’s younger pitchers and also helping groom fellow catcher Ryan Jordan. Gibson is a very strong hitter and should add some more punch to the lineup. Ryan Jordan has very advanced defensive skills and will split the duties with Gibson this year, and projects to have a very successful career at Medaille. Pitchers: Medaille is returning five of their top six pitchers: senior Matt Dunford (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon), jun- ior Pat Mancuso (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame), senior Nick Miano (Williamsville, NY/Clarence), sophomore Brad Smith (Buffalo, NY/McKinley) and sophomore Derrek Hoffman (Clarence, NY/ Clarence). Dunford, who also is a member of Medaille’s Basketball team, is expected to be the team’s ace. He is a big game pitcher and possesses the stuff to be very dominant. Mancuso is also expected to be one of the conference starters. He is a bulldog on the mound and is a fearless competitor. Rounding out the rest of the staff is senior co-captain Erik Prentice (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis), junior William Lorenzo (Fairport, NY/Fairport), junior Utica transfer Andy Dexter (Portland, ME/Lancaster), freshman Mansfield transfer and Zach Machmer (Pine City, NY/Elmira Southside). The 2011 Mavericks have been working and training hard and have high expectations for the upcoming season. They understand their mission and possess a proper mindset to succeed. A new and improved culture, character and attitude have been established by Coach Smaldone and his staff emphasizing team work, discipline, good work ethics, preparation and a respect for the game. The team and coaches are looking forward to an exciting and successful season of Medaille Maverick baseball. COACHINGSTAFF MEDAILLEBASEBALL2011 Head Coach: Paul J. Smaldone [email protected] The Medaille College baseball team will hit the diamond under the tutelage of third year head coach, Paul J. Smaldone. Coach Smaldone brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the diamond as he is a member of the Western New York Baseball Hall of Fame and the Canisius High School Sports Hall of Fame. Coach Smaldone has coached locally for over 25 years, including 18 years as a varsity assistant coach at Canisius High School where the Crusaders won 9 Georgetown Cup titles during that time. • Publisher's Comments by Mark Linnemann
Publisher’s Comments by Mark Linnemann If someone had told me a year ago there would be forty three teams in the USSSA Major NIT held last month at Eggleston Park, and that less than two weeks later twenty teams would compete in the “Open” division of this year’s Cincinnati ASA Metro tournament, I would have suggested they have their head examined. After all, only sixteen teams played in the “Major” NIT at Eggleston last year, and even at that size it was one of the largest in the country. And the top division of the ASA city tournament attracted a paltry six teams in 2005. Additionally, there are only five USSSA “Major” and twenty “A” level teams actively participating in the USSSA tournament program in the entire country, and only a picayune three teams played in the ASA “Major” Division National Tournament last September in Sanford, Florida. So what could possibly attract forty three teams to a USSSA “Major” NIT or twenty to the “Open” division of the ASA Metro? According to area teams, it was a plethora of things, ranging from double points, world berths and travel money to atmosphere, exposure, the opportunity try to improve one’s team by playing superior competition, and the opportunity to lock horns with the very best teams in the country. And those were just some of the carrots that made these events so wildly successful. Playing against the best teams and earning travel money have drawn Freeze Concrete/James Arnold/BW3/Easton to the U-Trip “Major” NIT at Eggleston the last two years, says manager Homer Matheny.
