In addition to his coaching duties, Ron has served as the college’s athletic director since 1997. In this role, he takes a keen interest in the success of each athletic program at the college, working diligently to attract and retain gifted, hard working student athletes to LLCC. While coaching at Lincoln Land Community College, Ron has been a driving force in the continued success of the program, including the National Championship teams in 1994 and 2000 and the 1993, 1995, 2014 and 2015 NJCAA National Tournament teams. During Ron’s LLCC coaching career, the Loggers have won more than 800 games. After Lincoln Land, Ron went on to pitch for Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Ron pitched on the team that won back to back Big South Conference Championships in 1989 and 1990. Ron and his wife Angie currently reside in Springfield and are the proud parents of Seth (22), Noah (20), Connor (19) and Becca (10). Repeal of Baseball's Longstanding Antitrust Exemption: Did Congress Strike out Again? INTRODUCrION "Baseball is everybody's business."' We have just witnessed the conclusion of perhaps the greatest baseball season in the history of the game. Not one, but two men broke the "unbreakable" record of sixty-one home-runs set by New York Yankee great Roger Maris in 1961;2 four men hit over fifty home-runs, a number that had only been surpassed fifteen times in the past fifty-six years,3 while thirty-three players hit over thirty home runs;4 Barry Bonds became the only player to record 400 home-runs and 400 stolen bases in a career;5 and Alex Rodriguez, a twenty-three-year-old shortstop, joined Bonds and Jose Canseco as one of only three men to have recorded forty home-runs and forty stolen bases in a 6 single season. This was not only an offensive explosion either. A twenty- year-old struck out twenty batters in a game, the record for a nine inning 7 game; a perfect game was pitched;' and Roger Clemens of the Toronto Blue Jays won his unprecedented fifth Cy Young award.9 Also, the Yankees won 1. Flood v. Kuhn, 309 F. Supp. 793, 797 (S.D.N.Y. 1970). 2. Mark McGwire hit 70 home runs and Sammy Sosa hit 66. Frederick C. Klein, There Was More to the Baseball Season Than McGwire, WALL ST. Records and History Old Dominion University Baseball 2009 Old Dominion University Baseball 2009 27 BUD METHENY n Jan 2, 2003 Old Dominion University and the athletic program lost a legend with the passing of Bud MethenyO and his wife Fran on the same day. Bud spent 32 years at the University from 1948 to 1980 as an instructor, basketball coach, athletic director and coach of the baseball program. Baseball was his passion, and where he made his mark. As a member of the New York Yankees from 1937 to 1946, Bud played on the 1943 World Series championship squad that stopped St. Louis. Bud started for the Yankees in the second and last game of the series. As a coach of the Monarchs, he rolled up a 423‑363‑6 record and was honored by the NCAA as the Eastern Regional coach of the year in 1963 and ‘64 and National Coach Of the Year in 1964. His Monarchs won the NCAA College Division Eastern Regional championship in 1963 and 1964 and took second in 1965. Bud not only coached baseball, but he was the men’s basketball head coach from 1948‑1965, compiling a 198‑163 record and posting 16 winning seasons. He served as the University’s athletic director from 1963‑1970. Following his retirement it was only fitting to honor Bud with the naming of the new baseball stadium in 1983 and with the adoption of the blue and white pin stripes of the Yankees on uniforms the following year, which coincides with the University’s new school colors, adopted in 1986.

Paradoxical pop-ups: Why are they difficult to catch? Michael K. McBeath Department of Psychology, Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona 85287 ͒ Alan M. Nathana Department of Physics, University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois 61801 A. Terry Bahill Department of Systems and Industrial Engineering, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona 85721 David G. Baldwin P. O. Box 190, Yachats, Oregon 97498 ͑Received 20 September 2007; accepted 9 May 2008͒ Professional baseball players occasionally find it difficult to gracefully approach seemingly routine pop-ups. We describe a set of towering pop-ups with trajectories that exhibit cusps and loops near the apex. For a normal fly ball the horizontal velocity continuously decreases due to drag caused by air resistance. For pop-ups the Magnus force is larger than the drag force. In these cases the horizontal velocity initially decreases like a normal fly ball, but after the apex, the Magnus force accelerates the horizontal motion. We refer to this class of pop-ups as paradoxical because they appear to misinform the typically robust optical control strategies used by fielders and lead to systematic vacillation in running paths, especially when a trajectory terminates near the fielder. Former major league infielders confirm that our model agrees with their experiences. © 2008 American Association of Physics Teachers. ͓DOI: 10.1119/1.2937899͔ I. INTRODUCTION The frequency of pop-ups in the major leagues—an aver- age of nearly five pop-ups per game2—is sufficiently large Baseball has a rich tradition of misjudged pop-ups. For that teams provide considerable pop-up practice for infielders example, on April, 1961, Roy Sievers of the Chicago White and catchers.

I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.
